My entire family loves Los Agaves. It's Mexican good done right. The staff here is super friendly…read moreand knowledgeable. The location is also nice as there is plenty of parking. On a few occasions we also got some outdoor concerts. It's a lovely small restaurant with very flavorful food options. I highly recommend trying them out.

Coming from the Bay Area, I definitely had pretty high expectations for Mexican food and Los Agaves…read morewas rather impressive! My friends and I came on a busy Taco Tuesday. You order and pay at the register, grab a number, seat yourself, and your food (along with complimentary chips) is brought to your table. There were plenty of indoor and outdoor seating options. Everything else is self-serve, including drinks and salsa/toppings. Their salsa bar had a great variety and I honestly loved every salsa I tried! You can't go wrong with whatever you choose, but I recommend the avocado salsa. My friend and I swapped a taco from each of our plates, so I was able to try their tacos al pastor and tacos del mar with halibut. The al pastor was particularly flavorful and well marinated, and to my surprise, I enjoyed the pineapple bits in the taco. The halibut tasted fresh and the chipotle sauce on top paired nicely. I also love a good side of rice and beans and I can't even put my finger on it, but it was just so tasty. It got pretty busy during the dinner rush and I was seated right along the order line, but nothing too disruptive to our dining experience. Overall, the food was solid, the staff was friendly, the service was quick, and the vibes were upscale-casual and lively.

This is the second time since moving to the Goleta area that I've experienced what appeared to be…read morediscriminatory treatment at a restaurant, and frankly, I'm tired of it. Today, I ordered my food at the counter. When my order was ready, an employee called me to come pick up my plate. Approximately three minutes later, White customers who had ordered after me had their food personally delivered to their table. What makes this particularly disappointing is that the employees were Latino themselves. Truth be told, I haven't experienced this kind of treatment from White restaurant employees in Goleta. Ironically, some of the most noticeable differences in service I've experienced have come from Latino employees serving other Latinos. It sometimes seems that certain Latino servers are so eager to please White customers that they extend courtesies to them that they don't extend to their own people. Let me be clear: I'm not suggesting that Latino customers should receive preferential treatment. I'm saying that every customer deserves the same courtesy, consideration, and respect. I suspect some employees don't even recognize what they're doing. Perhaps it's an internalized mentality of servitude or deference toward White customers that has become so ingrained that they don't consciously notice the difference in how they treat people. Whatever the explanation, it's disappointing. Don't be a "pick me." Have some self-respect, and show that same respect to the people around you. No customer should have to wonder whether the color of their skin determines the level of service they receive.
