I had the pleasure of being in Ohio last night, well for this week, we're in town for my son's graduation. My son and his wife took us to a an amazing place they stumbled into what may very well be the culinary pride of Columbus: La Tavola, a family-owned, family-run Italian restaurant that feels like someone teleported you straight into Nonna's kitchen... but with better lighting and no guilt about not calling enough. If you love yourself a great, unapologetically stinky pizza and I'm talking Parmigiano-Reggiano and ricotta levels of heavenly funk then this is your place. This pizza didn't just have cheese; it was knee-deep in cheese. Handmade, hand-rolled, and clearly crafted by people who know their way around a dairy situation. The appetizers? Fantastic. The waitstaff? Friendly, attentive, and exactly the kind of people you'd hope are handing you carbs by the plateful. But then, the main dishes arrived. I ordered seared scallops over a bed of handmade buttery fettuccine with capers, and I swear I heard an angel sing. The scallops were perfectly cooked, the pasta was the kind that ruins you for boxed pasta forever, and the whole thing tasted like someone's Italian grandmother blessed the plate personally. If I could say "WAY TO GO!" in Italian, I absolutely would but instead I'll say this: If you're ever in Columbus, go to La Tavola. Go hungry. Go ready to eat like you're visiting family. This is a restaurant that I literally dream about since I left. It's a small place with just one main guy in the kitchen. The gnocchi is homemade and the chicken parm with it was to die for. I also got the garlic cheese bread appetizer and it was also phenomenal! I was seated at the community table but I'd sit by the trash can out back if it meant I could eat here. Great dinner to celebrate my husband's birthday. Prices on the $$$$ side, service was fantastic from a server named Alyssa. Seating and ambiance was not as nice as the food. Absolutely delicious! Came in on a Wednesday early evening. Started with a bruschetta special they called Burata. Very good. Had the chicken parm for dinner which was OUTSTANDING. Richest red sauce I've ever had. Daughter had gnocchi with artichokes, also very good. Our waiter was great. Asked for a big red like a nice cab. He suggested the Brecciarola, which was very good. Daughter had an espresso martini, which she also liked. I had an old fashioned that did not impress. Tasted like it had club soda in it. We also got a pair of cannolis to go. Not that good either. Was so excited to try La Tavola after hearing really great things! The interior had a homey vibe to it, with lots of wooden tables and wine bottles to decorate. There are several bigger tables at the center to allow for bigger groups. We had made a reservation, which is recommended since they are popular and open open for dinner. We went straight into our entrees and ordered a mix of dishes, including classics like the chicken parm, along with special items such as the salmon ravioli, pesto pasta, and chicken ragu. They handmade their pasta and ingredients are local, which makes a difference. The texture of the noodles was great and the flavors were not too salty. I substituted the regular noodles on my chicken parm for gnocci and I was so glad I did since the gnocci was chewy and soft. The chicken was cooked well and was tender while having a healthy layer of cheese and sauce on it. The chicken ragu was very creamy with some veggies and braised chicken pieces. It felt like a good comfort food option. We all enjoyed the meal itself and when we told the server it was my birthday, she congratulated me and asked me to choose a dessert. I had heard a lot about the tiramisu so I went with that option. They even put a little candle on the tiramisu which was nice. It was creamy and not too heavy, which I liked. The coffee flavor was definitely more subtle than I was used to. We were ready to pay our bill and leave, and a friend graciously offered to pay for my meal, but we were surprised to find that my tiramisu hadn't been deducted from our bill. This came as a surprise because when my friend had called the restaurant earlier, they had told her she couldn't bring a cake from outside but that they would give a birthday dessert on the house. When we asked our server about this, she matter of facts said that they don't provide birthday desserts and walked away. She then disappeared and we didn't want to cause a scene so we paid and left. However, it was disappointing because we felt like the dessert charge was different from what they said on the phone and it was a reason why we chose this restaurant for my celebration. We would have happily paid if we were told that it wouldn't be complimentary earlier on the phone. Because of this discrepancy and the briskness of our server, our experience was a bit soured unfortunately. read more

My first choice for Italian in Columbus. I crave this place weekly. It feels like a farm to table concept as they update the menu nightly in every effort to provide seasonal, high quality ingredients. My favorite menu item is the chicken parmesan! The pasta that accompanies the chicken cutlet is a butter and parmesan situation that is the simplest example of deliciousness. Fresh baked bread and olive oil are complementary. The seasonal salads are divine! There's no more than 15 tables and I highly recommend you have a reservation. You can see the kitchen hustle and bustle from any table, almost feels like you're at Nonna's house for Sunday dinner. read more

This is a great place to go for fresh food and great service--but it is not a great choice for those needing a GF - gluten free - meal. It was popping up as one of the best in the area because another review used gf as a sub for girlfriend, so I wanted to be clear about this in my review. I know this isn't a concern for everyone. That said , everyone else in our group had wonderful pasta dishes that were beautifully presented and all were enjoyed. Our server took great care of us and was apologetic about the lack of gf options. She was clear in saying that "chef will not alter menu items." There were a few gf options -one appetizer , whipped ricotta and beets (highly recommend) and a House Salad ( really nice) with chicken added (dry and overcooked but gf .) There is a flourless chocolate torte and a few flavors of gelato on the dessert menu too, so that was a bonus! While I'd have loved to enjoy a hot meal, I didn't leave hungry and we had a great time. Now regarding the food: The focaccia bread they served was excellent. For starters we ordered the beets with ricotta -- was outstanding. For our main dishes, we ordered the fettuccine special and the pasta bolognese. Both pastas were handmade and cooked well. However, while the fettuccine was quite good, the pasta bolognese was extremely salty. That was very disappointing. For dessert, the cannoli was very tasty --- the homemade filling was outstanding. We wanted to try a new restaurant and came here for our anniversary dinner. We were not disappointed. My wife had the spaghetti bolognese and I had the walleye off the specials menu. Both were extremely well prepared. My walleye was on a bed of polenta with a topping of mixed vegetables. Great presentation and tasty. Glad I ordered it. Absolutely love this small, cute restaurant! I've been coming here for years and finally got around to leaving a review. The food is always perfect and the atmosphere is intimate and welcoming. The service is great. I would highly recommend getting a reservation if you plan on going over the weekend. They typically have daily specials that are highlights of the meal! My only improvement would be allow people to make reservations online. Right now, you can only make them by calling and since they're only open for dinner, it's limited hours you can reach out. I can't believe I haven't written a review of La Tavola yet! I'm going to make a bold statement. After living in Columbus for almost ten years, I think this is my favorite restaurant in the city. We've been here for many birthdays and special events and will continue to come back for many more. La Tavola is very small and intimate, so be sure to make a reservation! I simply cannot say enough good things about the food - it truly is as good as the Italian food I ate while I was in Italy. My fiancé and I order the beef bolognese to share without question every single time, and we usually also try to find a pasta on their daily rotating menu to share as well just to try something new. But the beef bolognese is an absolute non-negotiable, it's one of the best things I have ever eaten. If I had to choose my last meal before I die I think that might be it. Please go to La Tavola and try it so you can understand my obsession! :) Outside of the bolognese, I have had some absolutely sensational gnocchi at La Tavola as well as some seafood inspired pastas. They also have fantastic cocktails (one of the best dirty martinis I've had in Columbus) and a great selection of Italian wines. The burrata appetizer is an absolute must--so delicious! The gnocchi was a standout favorite at our table, and the short rib ragu was equally incredible. I can't quite remember the name of my dish, but it was a special of the night, and it was fantastic. You truly can't go wrong here! There are several Italian restaurants in the Upper Arlington / Grandview / Short North area that we really like, but La Tavola stands above them all. I have yet to have a meal that wasn't delicious. I appreciate their menu being on the smaller side. They focus on a handful of dishes and that attention to detail is truly appreciated. We enjoyed La Tavola last night and while the service was a-mazing, the actual delivery of the food was just okay. It's cozy and cute inside with a mixed bag of customers, which I appreciated, but it was a bit disappointing about the pasta. The lemon tart wasn't remarkable. I also had the beet and ricotta, which was delicious in a creamy-almost-yogurt way. The serving was smaller but I didn't mind. To start off we ordered a bottle of a white that the server recommend. It was delicious. He was so friendly and gave great recommendations. We started off with the garlic crostini and prosciutto crostini. Both were delicious! They were tasty and the bread was crispy. We ordered the mushroom Alfredo, which was so delicious and flavorful. By far my favorite Italian spot in Columbus! We started off with seasonal salad which had fresh olives, heirloom tomatoes and pine nuts. For entrees we got chicken parm and halibut. Chicken parm was 10/10. Chicken was tender, with so much cheese on top. And their pasta, as always, was perfectly al dante with amazing flavors. Halibut was on the saltier side for my taste but still really good with unique flavors (right now has peaches in the sauce!). Definitely get a reservation, they are always booked. The service is spectacular. Attentive and very knowledgable servers. When we asked about the chicken parm, our server knew every step and ingredient in the dish. He also made spectacular recommendations for wine and entrees that were all hits. The food is incomparable. My mother-in-law said it was the best chicken parmesan she's had in her life. The bolognese and the gnocchi al forno were also hits. I had the Orrechiette Pasta from the extensive specials list and it was perfect. It really is the best authentic Italian food I've had. To top it off, the Tiramisu is unparalleled. I've had a lot of tiramisu that I don't really care for, but the tiramisu here is spectacular. It is light and airy, like eating a lightly espresso-flavored cloud. It is a more expensive restaurant, so it is best for special occasions. But for the incredibly high-quality food and portions, the pricing is very reasonable. Upon entrance, we were greeted promptly, and even though we didn't have reservations they were able to seat my hubby and me. The waitress came over to greet us in a decent amount of time but you could tell that we went at a time when it was starting to get busy. We did not order an appetizer, but they did bring bread. I did not partake in eating the bread; however, my hubby did. He stated that the bread was good but not the best. We proceeded to order our entrees. Heads up, they do not have any gluten-free items. If you are gluten intolerant, skip this restaurant. I could not believe that they didn't have anything that was gluten free in 2023. I was told the halibut was gluten free but the server wasn't 100% sure. She said they could probably make some chicken that was gluten free but I did not want chicken. I ended up ordering the Halibut and my hubby ordered a pepperoni pizza and added mushrooms. The verdict - Hubby's rating: 1. Bread - 4/5 2. Pepperoni Pizza with mushrooms - 3.5/5 (he stated that the pizza had way too many mushrooms on it and they overwhelmed the pizza taste). My rating: 1. Halibut - 3/5 The Halibut was cooked well but the mash underneath it was cold and had a weird taste. The service was good too. Overall, I rate this restaurant average. Oh my gosh what isn't there to say about this place. One of the best restaurants in Columbus, if any cuisine. Cozy feel, excellent food, amazing service, great wine list, incredible specials, I can go on. Their homemade pastas are incredible and always well seasoned or sauced. Great appetizer and bread options. Simple but very well done classics like chicken parmesan and pizzas. We've been coming here for years and always leave smiling with full bellies and happy hearts feeling like we just filled our souls at the same time.
