Spoiler Alert! NOT Vegan, NOT Kosher! If you were ever wondering if your favorite Mexican restaurant is indeed serving authentic Mexican food- just stop in for lunch and look around. Any Mexicans? Probably not. On the corner of Aurora Rd. and Croton Rd., a taco truck sits in front of an old Melbourne convenience store that was best known in my youth as THE place for minors to purchase alcohol. The convenience store was converted to a Mexican grocery store some time ago, and has all the standard Mexican stuff: beans, tortillas, condiments, chilis, and funky-ass cowboy boots. The star of the show, however, is the taco truck. Lunchtime at La Preferida looks like a construction worker's convention. The fercockt parking lot is filled with work trucks. Getting in and out is a pain in the ass. But you must find a spot. Even if you have to park across the street. The process works like this: Go inside the store and order at the counter. Warning- they only accept pesos or unused calling cards as payment. They also have all kinds of Mexican soda, so get your drinks too. Kenny Goldstein recommends the Mexican Coca-Cola made with real goddamn sugar. Disregard the big menu on display, because there's a hand-written menu taped to the case of chicharrons identifying what they really have available. There's a big cooler full of fresh-made corn tortillas next to the counter. $1.50/package. Get some for dinner later. Order your food, pay for your stuff, and take your ticket to the truck. The girls in the truck speak limited English, so make sure you get your order right while you're inside. When your food is ready, they'll just yell out what you ordered- in Spanish. You can take your food to-go, or enjoy al Fresco dining in front of the store, which is always a treat. I usually order the tacos, which are dependably great. Asada, carnitas, pollo, lengua, tripa- your choice served on a fresh tortilla with onions and cilantro for $1.75 each. Get one each of the salsas- verde and roja. Today I had to get back to the office, so I ordered Chicharron ($9) to go, which is pork belly with skin (mostly skin) simmered in a spicy tomato sauce and served with rice, beans, and tortillas. The menu said it was supposed to come with nopal (cactus), but they didn't give me any. I also grabbed a pack of tortillas from the cooler and asked politely for extra salsa while I made sure she saw me drop some pesos in her tip jar. The chicharron was delicious, although the soft skin was a little off-putting. The meat was tender, tasty, and cut small enough to comfortably fit a couple pieces in a tortilla. Add some salsa and enjoy! A swig of Coke and a belch or two, on to the next one. The pinto beans were perfect, as was the rice. The warm, fresh tortillas didn't overpower the pork, which is sometimes the case with corn tortillas. The salsa verde was bright, citrusy, and just a tad spicy. The salsa roja was a bit smoky with a nice kick. I left a few pieces of pork skin, only because I was stuffed. I'd say this is the best Mexican food in Melbourne. It doesn't get much better than Street tacos from a food truck and horchata. For a while, I used to get all my steak and tortillas from here and make my own tacos just like they make them. The tortillas they sell here are super fresh if you're looking to make your own tacos. This place has the best street tacos. After discovering it, I ate their food 3 times a week for a while. They have street tacos, made with delicious soft corn tortillas and a variety of meats: chicken, barbecue, carnitas, el pastor (so good!!), beef tongue (if you are adventurous, give it a try. texture is funny, but taste is good). Normally, tacos come with raw onions and cilantro on top and a lime wedge on the side. If you want to, you can request to have all the toppings, which include crumbly cheese and tomatoes. Personally, I prefer without tomatoes, but that cheese (might be Cotija cheese) is very good. One taco is around $2. They have tamales only on weekends - pork and chicken. I normally prefer pork, but last time I got them they had a lot of skin and fat inside and I couldn't eat them. Chicken is always good though. $6 for a pack of 3 tamales. Their beans are also fantastic. So much flavor. I've been wanting to try their 'elotes' (corn with mayo, lime, cheese), but they haven't had it in a while. The place is always very busy around lunch. Lots of Hispanic workers go there on their lunch break, so you know this place has good food. They also have fresh drinks inside the grocery store. I tried the pina colada and it was very refreshing. $3 for a large cup. I need to go back and try the Horchata, which is supposed to be really good too. read more

I've lived in Melbourne for a whole year now and after this last visit I remembered why this is only the second time I've gone to this place. I was hoping they had cleaned the store up a bit, but they still haven't. The coolers and shelves are still needing a severe cleaning. It's very dim lit as well. And I was confused as to where the line is. I stood behind approximately 15 people only to find out that they were all in line to transfer money. It would've been nice to have known that one line was for wiring money and the other for purchases. A customer had to direct me to the next register instead of the employees. When I'm finally next at the register, some of the items didn't ring up at the listed priced. I wasn't going to argue cause I know they wouldn't care. I then proceeded to order Tamales (it was Sunday) but the girl at the register said they were out. So much for being advertised as only being served on Saturday and Sunday. We opted for 2 tacos, a burrito and a deep fried whole tilapia known as a mojarra. I asked the girl if I'd get salsa outside and if I needed to pay for extra and she said no that I would get it at the food truck. So we paid and went outside to the food truck to get our food. Food was done in a reasonable time. But when we got our food, the lady gave me only 2 salsas. I asked for two more and she shook her head and said that's all she was going to give me because I only bought 2 entrees and 2 tacos. Okay.. this is why I asked the girl inside if I had to pay for extra salsa... So I ask the stingy food truck lady if I could buy more and she said I could get extra for 25 cents each and I had to pay inside. So I go over to my car to get change since I had no cash. I got a dollar in change and I went inside to get myself 4 salsas. Well people are still in line trying to wire money and both registers are being used for that. So now I'm waiting... waiting... meanwhile my food is getting cold. I'm overhearing how people are wiring money without providing identification.. shady- but not my business, not why I'm there.. when I finally reach the register the girl tells me it's 50 cents each extra salsa yet the food truck lady said 25 cents. I'm annoyed cause these ladies are giving me different prices, I can't use my card cause the minimum is $5 and I don't want $5 worth of salsa. I asked ahead of time to avoid this situation. So I ended up just getting two extra salsas. How stingy do you get? The people who choose to eat there on their dirty tables outside get to take the whole bottle and get as much as they please but I wanna take my food to go and they get petty over 2 extra ounces of salsa... I took my food to go and when I finally start to dig in, it's not bad. The asada tacos tasted better then they did almost a year ago. The burrito was smaller than the ones from other yelpers' pictures. Still decent, though. The mojarra was pretty dry. Not impressed. The rice and beans were the star of that dish. And the tortillas they gave me for it felt and tasted like they'd been hanging around the food truck for a while. I'm very confused by the ratings. It's very authentic but authentic doesn't mean quality. Perhaps the reviews are due to the fact that they don't have much competition. I have been in Florida only 3 years. I used to live in California and Mexico before moving here and no way would this place survive in Cali and Mexico. The ratings are due to the lack of competition, in my opinion. I've been going here for years. The food is great! I've recommended this to many of my friends. Unfortunately, Monday (02/10/2020) I had the worst food I've ever had here. I ordered the Mojarra to go. It was so overcooked that it was not edible. I broke the plastic fork trying to eat it. I used a steal fork but found that the taste was so bad I threw it away.I've never had this style of fish so poorly done; anywhere, ever. If I had ordered it to eat there I would have returned it and had it done again. This is not the quality I've enjoyed for many years. But, I'll never make the mistake of ordering this again. I have YET to read ONE of these opinions remarking about the HOT SAUCE!!! Is it home made? In a Tabasco Bottle , Has it all been watered down for the gringo's. As was the case of the Indian Restaurant on Wickham, called Taste of India? So disappointing! Indians in India eat HOT and VERY VERY SPICY food!!!!! Not here! Cubans do not eat their food HOT, Puerto Ricans do NOT eat their food hot. Nor to Brazilians. To Mexicans it can Not be TOO HOT! But everyone puts a bottle of Tabasco on the table and says that's hot sauce. NO IT's NOT!!! It is SOooooooooooooooooooooo disappointing that we must water down our pallets for the Americans. No wonder I eat at home as I have not found a authentic Indigenous restaurant here yet that is ETHNIC! Serranos, Jalapenos, Thai Chilis, Ghost Peppers, Habaneros. Anchos. Bird Peppers etc. etc. etc. Even Popeyes sauces are not hot! They're hot french fries are not HOT enough. We tried Pollo Tropical. It was supposed to be like Caribbean food, well I lived in several islands Jamaica, St. Croix, Grand Cayman and no one here cooks their JERK meats like they are cooked the REAL authentic way. Haven't had anything that wasn't great. Order inside, get your post-it and drop it off at the truck. Try the green sauce, it's not too hot, but has a great flavor. Go inside the market to order the best authentic tacos/mexican food in the Melbourne greater area and the only place I have found Menudo. The menudo and tamales are only made on the weekends so I still haven't been able to try it, but the tacos are fantastic. There are two tables inside the market and four outside. There's a food truck permanently parked outside called Tacos El Vaquero with great authentic Mexican food. You order for the truck inside the store and hand your receipt to someone in the truck. The store has dry goods, drinks, and several fresh handmade takeout options, like delicious tamales! (fresh on weekends) They are sold in packs of 3 and come in chicken, pork, and cheese usually. Finally after moving out to Florida from Tucson, Arizona, I have found real, authentic Mexican food! The tacos were cooked to perfection - I would recommend the carne asada (steak) tacos as the meat has a really nice grilled taste.
