There's a reason this place has been open for 70 years! I had trouble finding this place initially, but I'm glad I didn't give up! I ordered one of everything and it was fantastic! The waiter was so nice and friendly, explaining everything in English! I loved all of it but had to order another sausage even though I was full because I didn't know when I was going to be able to come again! The portions are good for their price!!! Please come! If Ernest Hemingway was still alive and roaming the streets of Barcelona and found La Plata, it would be one of his favorites and I'm sure great writing material. I just happened to stumble upon La Plata while touring around with a friend/local of Barcelona, when I noticed La Plata from a short distance away. Before I even step foot inside, I could tell this place had simple and wonderful authentic Catalan experience written all over it. A small place, seemingly a perfect "local/fishermans" hangout, inside is warm and calm, and the options for eat and drink are simple, direct. €1 Wine in Tinto, Rosa, and Blanco (I recommend the Tinto), Pescaditos Fritos, and a very few other small dishes. Embrace the balmy Barcelonian evening and go here. Of all the places I noticed and visited, this was my sure favorite, largely because of it's warm and tucked away authentic atmosphere. Oh yea, and the great 1 euro wine. This place is the real deal. read more

It doesn't get more classic than this. La Plata has been there for years and years and years, and it'll probably stay there many more. The concept is simple yet, in its essence, it is what Mediterranean food is about: simple, few ingredients, no sauces, no fancy cooking, just high quality food. Do not bother in asking for the menu, or trying to guess what could you get. La Plata has only 3 different plates: chorizo (cooked, not fried) on a piece of bread; tomato salad (tomato, onion, olives and anchovies), and of course (the star) fresh fried sardines. Man, these sardines are good! Fresh (it doesn't get fresher than that... otherwise they would be swimming by themselves) and fried. Simple. And good. Oh and of course wine... at 0.80 euro de glass!!! (small, but good who cares? at that price you can ask for more). I used to go there every couple of weeks. Now, every time I go to Barcelona I must go and pay my respects. And in the process, have some sardines. read more

Pushy and rude service... the fried fish was good, sausage was decent but I wouldn't come here because they make you feel unwelcomed, particularly the waiter. Very impatient, I tried to ask what the tapas were, since I don't know the language, he was very rude kept saying they only had sardines, salad and sausage without explaining further when I asked how they were cooked. This tiny spot is nothing short of amazing. No fanciness, (although I do covet the tiles on the wall). This tiny spot in the heart of Barcelona's Gothic Quarter is a must go to travel destination for all true foodies. MAD RESPECT for a place that only offers 4 plates, and they do the 4 simply, and with perfection! The fried whole small fish are gutted and cleaned, then fried whole and seasoned. You shove the entire thing in your pie hole and down your gullet. No whining allowed regarding the head and the bones. The fish is so small it is unnoticeable! Also did not know that a simple salad of tomato, onion, olives, and olive oil could be THIS damn good. (Wifey and I are debating whether it is the quality of the EVOO or the produce). The other 2 tapas offered is a pan con tomate, (nice bread slice with tomato rubbed on it), topped with a very nice anchovy, nothing like the nasty ones from a can in the US. The other is the same aforementioned bread with a "Butifarra," the local available everywhere Catalonian sausage. Deliciousness! You further will be hard pressed to find house wines this good anywhere. We had the house red and were delighted that it was mildly chilled. The pour it right out of a barrel and into a 750ml bottle that is set at your table. Trust me, everywhere in Barcelona that this is done, they know exactly how many "copas" you've had, so don't worry if you don't want the entire bottle as we consumed. Wow this place was so simple but so great and cheap. This place was in front of where I was staying and I always saw a line and saw its great reviews, so I decided to try it out. For context, I'm not a huge seafood lover (aside from sushi) but I found the fried anchovies to be so delicious. At first, I was a tad nervous but it was great. I'm also not a huge beer drinker but the beer they served, San Miguel, was also really good. It's probably found at any restaurant around here but this is just where I tried it. I had the bread with olive oil and tomato (pan con tomate), fried anchovies (pescaditos) and the tomato and onion salad (ensalada). Even the simple salad was awesome. The onions weren't too "onion-y" nor did they leave a lingering taste in your mouth for he rest of the night. My total was 8.5 euros which is super cheap. It was super busy at 8 pm but I was able to squeeze in at the standing bar. I wouldn't come with a huge group unless youre okay with eating outside while standing and ordering from a window. They made me feel like home although I did not speak Spanish. This place stands out with a pure simplicity, it has a history, and it definitely has a "soul". Ordering was made extremely easy with the instructions first ("we have four tapas") and suggestions ("you should have red wine"). CHECK YOUR BILL!!! We did not have a good experience here and were surprised at all the fantastic reviews. The menu is the chalkboard with 3-4 tapas they are serving. The drinks were not listed, and when we asked about prices (we saw some glasses, refillable bottles, and carafes) the waiter seemed annoyed and impatient. We decided to order 1 of each of the tapas. We had an estimate of $13-14 total, but when the bill came it was $23.00!! We asked for an itemized receipt and the waiter came back with one, with $5.00 listed twice under "various". We asked what that was, and he said he gave us more food than we asked which was not true as we compared our dishes to other tables with one person eating. We explained to him that if any "extra" food was given without our request or consent, we should not be responsible for the charges. The owner quickly calls the waiter and they come back with a different recipe and says that they will take off $5.00. (The receipt still had $5.00 various on it and they could explain what that was except for the extra food explanation). We just paid it even though it didn't feel right. It was shady and confusing, I would not recommend coming here unless you are familiar with the language. They are obviously preying on tourists. read more

This is a place that does only a few things, and does each of them very very well. A treat and worth any wait you may encounter. The fried anchovies, which you eat whole (don't look if that bothers you) are simply perfect, and pan con tomato defines this simple combination and makes all others a disappointment. Best bravas with eggs I have ever had in Spain. The crowd is great and more importantly the menu - which changes daily is incredible.

I think the hours posted are off - we went at 4 and 5 pm on a Thursday and it was closed, but it was open when we checked again at 6:30. In short, it was worth wandering around for hours on La Rambla and Barri Gotic to try this place. There are no menus, but there are only 4 different tapas offered and 3 different wines. The wines are served in small drink glasses, and cost slightly more than 1 euro each. There is a red wine, a white wine, and a rose - we tried the red and rose and were happy with both. There are 4 choices in terms of food - a plate of salad (tomato, onion, olives with olive oil, 2 anchovies), a small plate of fried fish (looks exactly like Taiwanese style fried smelt, lightly battered and deep fried whole), a plate of bruschetta which looked like it had the tomato juice rubbed directly onto the bread, and a sausage on a small piece of toast. The sausage didn't seem overly fatty and was well flavored. The bruschetta was my least favorite, because I'm not such a big fan of bread, but I really enjoyed everything else - very simply fresh and delicious. We had a great dinner here at a great price - 4 plates of fresh food and 2 cups of wine for a total of less than 12 euros for 2 people! I fully recommend skipping the overpriced tourist trap places on La Rambla and walking over to this tiny hole in the wall place in the Barri Gotic. read more

This place is soooo good and typically frequented by the locals, not tourists. It is a hidden gem. It prepares only 4 tapas: anchovies on tomato bread, sausage on tomato bread, tomato/ onion salad and fried sardines. These may sound weird or interesting... ALL were sooo tasty. Our friends grabbed beers and Coca-Cola and left there full without huge dents to our pockets at all. I highly recommend this place... the trip to the Gothic Quarter to visit it is well worth it. We ordered the sardines and sausage (served with two slices tomato bread). We've tried tapas throughout the city, and these we're the best by far. It's already been noted numerous times that this place is very small, very simple, and with a very small menu. This place is a perfect example, though, of doing less and making it perfect. We sampled all four dishes and were thrilled with them all. Accompanied by small glasses of wine, our bill came to 15 euro for two people (!). I would go back not just because it was great, with lots of local flavor, but because I want to eat more of this wonderful food. Yes, the same four dishes. If you like tapas, or if you want a very local Barcelona experience, you must come here. Side story: after eating here, we went to the place just across the street called Tasca El Corral, also recommended but a different experience (see my review). While we were at Tasca El Corral, the chef of La Plata came over with not one but two huge plates of the deep fried anchovies for the kitchen staff. Says much about local relations, and just as much if not more about the food at La Plata. Highly recommended. read more
