Thai Boat Noodle Soup
Sallie W.

Came here for a birthday dinner for the first time and it gave average vibes. Let's start with the food. We got: Crispy calamari - mediocre at best, the batter was flaky but a lot of it fell off the calamari. Num Tok - its kind of like a strips of beef in a sour fish sauce and some herbs. Crispy Pork Belly - this was the most disappointing dish, there were maybe 8 slices of pork belly for a $21 dish the remaining was all chinese broccoli. It was extremely salty. Boat Noodle - never had boat noodle so want to try, it had pho noodles in a thick almost brackish, bloody soup. Quite interesting. Pad See Ew - This noodles in this dish was very fresh and soft and is tasty. No wok hei aroma unfortunately. Drunken Noodle - Just salty and spicy, prefer the Pad See Ew. Crispy Soft Shell Crab - this was on their special menu and we got two of these as the family usually loves this dish. The crab was in a crunchy batter and deep fried and sitting in a curry sauce. It was a lot better than the crispy calamari, the batter is different. Of all the dishes this was the best tasting but the sauce was still far too salty. Overall, the portion sizes here are tiny and every dish was very salty. Some dishes came with a little side dish of rice so you will definitely have to order more rice for how salty everything is. Each tiny side dish of rice is $2. There looks to be only two staff hosting, serving and waiting on the entire restaurant. Our main server had a stern look on her our entire meal. For the vast options of thai restaurants in the area, we won't be returning here.

This is my go to spot! I have had so many of their apps, dishes, drinks, and desserts! It's definitely a comfort mom and pop shop I would go back to because it's chill and everyone is so nice. The location is convenient, good parking, and a family friendly vibe. Stay there or take to go! I'm coming back always for their Bua Loy!

We went here for lunch the day after Valentine's Day. We had Crispy Vegetable Spring Rolls, Basil Fried Rice, and Kapow Chicken. The food was all really good, and the portion sizes of the fried rice and Kapow Chicken were very generous. I really enjoyed everything. At the end of our meal, they gave us free Valentine's Day cupcakes made by the chef. They were very good too. I like their booth seats because they offer more privacy. The staff are very kind and always keep a nice smile. This is my go-to Thai place.

Green Curry

Doordashed this place tonight and I am obsessed!!! This is the best thai green curry I've ever had, SOOOO flavorful, and I've ordered green curry many times in my life. I love spice but it was a lot for me, I wish you could slightly adjust the spiciness level but it was still amazing and not too overpowering. The portions sizes are perfect! I also wish they used tofu sheets/yuba instead of tofu cubes because they are soft and absorb the curry better, but the cubes were still moist and really good. I also had the chicken satay, which was also amazing, and I was super happy to see the peanut sauce was chunky This is 100% the best thai food place I've been to in the area and I can't wait to try out more items from the menu later

I had lunch on a weekend here. I'll probably be back in the future, but I'd sooner rather try a new Thai place than come right back to La Ong. Overall, the food is good, but there are better places out there. We had the papaya salad, tom kha gai soup, basil eggplant with chicken, green curry with tofu, and red curry with chicken. The tom kha gai soup was rich and creamy, but seemed unbalanced by any spice or sourness. There were good pieces of chicken and sliced white button mushrooms. Lots of Thai restaurants in the US use regular button mushrooms, but some use straw mushrooms which seem more authentic to me in Thai dishes, so I would have preferred those. The papaya salad had some good tanginess but it had almost no spice. It had a darker hue than other papaya salads I've seen. It might have had some tamarind sauce in it but it wasn't particularly distinctive. I would pass on this and I probably will try the larb next time. Both curries were flavorful and had an appropriate level of spice. If you like your green curry on the really spicy side, you should try to ask for it specifically (it had 2 spice stars listed on the menu, but didn't match the spice level of other green curries I've had in the area). Both curries seemed a little heavy on the coconut milk. The basil eggplant with chicken was very good. It was mild, but still had slices of green chili in it to keep the spice level up. The chicken, like in the soup, consisted of large thin slices of white meat. If you're into krapow, I would suggest ordering the krapow dish specifically, rather than this one. That's what I plan on doing next time. Overall, this is good food, but not on the level of other Thai restaurants that I'd give 4 stars to. All the dishes that had coconut milk in them seemed to be a bit heavy on that ingredient and it muted some of the spice and curry that I normally look for in spicy dishes.

Beef Pad Thai

Wanted to give La Ong Thai a try, since I've been looking for more Thai restaurants, and I'm glad I found this place! The Food: I got the Beef Pad Thai and a Beef Thai Fried Rice. The Service: Ordered take-out, but the service was very good! Ordered my food, and it didn't take long at all. I got there early and was in and out quick. The Atmosphere: Nice, clean and spacious on the inside. The decor was very nice and homey as well. Overall, a 5/5. Food was absolutely delicious. I'll be back for sure!

Shrimp fried rice.

Thai food has to be excellent to get a vote of approval in our house. My daughter in law and her mom are from Thailand. So, they are very picky when they go out to eat. La Ong Thai Bistro does the trick. Yesterday, we ordered my granddaughter's favorite shrimp pineapple fried rice. There were plenty of large shrimp and a delicious mix of vegetables and rice. She really loved it. Another menu item was the chicken satay. The chicken skewers were perfectly cooked and I loved the peanut dipping sauce. Yum! We also ordered pork pad see ew. There was a generous amount of tender pork and noodles. The sauce was luscious. This was my son's favorite. My favorite was the Hawaiian shrimp. Large shrimp, green beans, onion, bell pepper and pineapple. All covered in a mouth watering sauce. I couldn't stop eating it. Service was excellent. We ordered on the phone and it was ready for us when we arrived. It was still warm when it arrived. It was packed well for travel and it made it home with no spills. I can't speak to the ambiance, since I wasn't the person picking it up. But, I can say that it is my son's families favorite Thai restaurant and when you have two members who are from Thailand, that is pretty high praise. I thoroughly enjoyed my meal.

Sauteed String Bean with Garlic

I was in the mood for Thai so I ordered takeout from this restaurant as it was right in the shopping plaza where I happened to be. I ordered green Thai curry w/ chicken, sticky rice and garlic spring beans. I found it interesting that the restaurant noted that they could not alter the spice level of their curries as most Thai restaurants can, however; I respected it. My order was ready in the designated time slot they said it would be and the woman at the hostess stand who gave me my order was friendly. Both the curry and the string beans were delicious and the curry had the perfect amount of spice. The sticky rice was perfectly cooked however the jasmine rice that came along with the curry was overcooked so I'm glad I had the sticky rice to sub. The portion sizes were smaller than what I would say most other Thai restaurants provide, however, it was still very filling, I will definitely be back.

Update with more details on food options: The fried rice here is one of the best in class. Fried rice doesn't sound very adventurous for a foodie but trust me, this fried rice here is to die for! Get it with shrimp or crab meat or chicken or beef, it doesn't matter. I've tried them all and all of them were good. All the other Thai staples were also great. I usually rotate between fried rice, pad see ew, drunken noodles (it's like spicy pad see ew), and pad thai. I get Pad Thai the least because it's too sweet for me. Chicken larb and beef salad are bombs! I also get penang curry from time to time but I must say that one isn't the best I've ever had (it's a solid 7/10). All the other ones I mentioned are either 9/10 or 10/10. Another recent one I've tried and really like is Nua Swan - the dried beef with sticky rice. That combo works well. It's an appetizer portion. The veggie spring rolls I also highly recommend. I also occasionally order tom yum noodle soup. However, their noodles are quite too sweet for me so I don't crave them that often. I tried the whole fried fish one time and I didn't recall it to be good so I've never ordered again. They may have improved it since. The lighting is dim and the place has dark paints but the friendly waitresses brighten up your visit every time - even if you're just picking up your food. I've had their food ever since they opened many years ago. The food quality has been consistent every single time!

Still a fan! Tonight hubby and I shared a papaya salad and spicy eggplant basil pork. The papaya was a nice cooling sour contrast to the spicy. Main was chock full of pork and eggplant with a nice spicy heat level... just on my edge of spiciness! Always surprised how quickly things come out... so fresh and yummy! Thrilled they are so close to us.

My to go lunch spot! I work in the plaza and I love coming here for a hearty and delicious meal. The prices are reasonable and the portions are large. My go to order are the Drunken Noodles. The noodles are always cooked perfectly and have a nice chewy texture. I usually get it with beef and shrimp. The proteins are never over cooked and tender. My second go to is the Panang Curry. It's rich and creamy, another good size portion. It's sweet but also has a great kick to it as well. The Thai Tea is also authentic and refreshing. It does not taste artificial or powdery. The service is always quick and kind. Will be continuing to dining here!

Stir-Fry Basil Eggplant with Tofu
Amala S.

I ordered for take out and the food was great. Today I tried the basil eggplant stir fry with tofu. I really enjoyed that it was the firm tofu and not the hollow tofu skin some places give you. Flavor was delicious but my rice was a little hard. A little disappointed but nothing to cry about. I ordered medium spice and I thought it was definitely at a hotter level. I would say my spice tolerance is above average so something to just keep in mind if you don't handle too much spice well. Thai iced tea was also delicious. Looking forward to trying more from here in the future

My mom and I were seated right next to the front door by the manager. Since it was freezing outside and the door kept opening, we politely asked if we could move to a table away from the draft. He told us no because a large group was expected to arrive soon. We then asked another employee, who said it wouldn't be a problem and moved us to a different table. A few moments later, the manager noticed we had been reseated. He came over, abruptly took the menus from our table, and angrily told us to leave the restaurant. The way he spoke to us was aggressive and totally uncalled for, especially considering his own staff had seated us. We decided to leave at that point. As we were heading out, he raised his voice again and told us to "go home," which was embarrassing and uncomfortable with other diners around. There was no confrontation on our end -- we didn't argue, complain, or cause a scene. We simply asked not to sit in the cold draft by the door. The entire situation escalated solely because of how the manager handled it. It's disappointing because the restaurant advertises friendly, welcoming service, which was the complete opposite of what we experienced. After reading other reviews, it also seems this isn't an isolated issue. If the owners see this, I'd strongly suggest addressing how customers are spoken to. No one should be yelled at or treated aggressively for making a simple, reasonable request.

I actually want to rate this meal 2.5 stars but since I can only give whole stars here, I'm giving the restaurant the benefit of the doubt. I think it can still be pretty good, but not with the dishes we ordered. We came for lunch and ordered off the lunch special menu. That meal comes with the entree, and either a vegetable spring roll and chicken lemon grass soup, or a vegetable spring roll and vegetable lemon grass soup. They offer a third alternative of two spring rolls as well which I think is a pretty nifty option. The two entrees we had were the vegetable tofu drunken noodles and the chicken sweet basil (pad krapow). The spring rolls were fine. Crispy on the outside, cabbage on the inside. The soup was unfulfilling. It tasted a bit like lemongrass soup but it was not tasty. For the entrees, we were able to adjust the spice level: I went for "hot" (3 out of 4 of their scale), while my dining partner went for "medium" (2 out of 4) on the drunken noodles. At most Thai restaurants, these two dishes generally have a similar flavor profile. Here, they do, indeed, have a similar profile between themselves. However, the sauce was quite red. It had a vinegary overtone and possibly some tomato base to it. It did not match the pad krapow flavor profile that I've found at basically every other Thai restaurant I've been to (in the United States and Thailand). It could be this is an authentic version I'm just not familiar with, but I really did not like it. Overall, Thai Luang is a decent place. Perhaps some of the other dishes and curries are good, but there are too many other Thai restaurants in NOVA these days for me to use up a meal coming back here.

They were slammed. And I think they did a great job with the demands of the patrons. Let me explain the 1 star rating. My friend raised her glass to take a sip of her cocktail. The entire bottom broke from the top and spilled the contents over 4 people. Half my pants leg was covered. Another had her purse drenched. Another her shoes were soaked. The one with the drink - her entire pants was soaked. My friends husband talked to the bar manager and he said he would comp us (4) a drink. So we told the bartender what our friends husband said. The bar manager came over and said he is only going to comp my friends drink that exploded. We all looked at him like "WTF just happened?" His bar back cleaned up the mess around us and saw all the liquid on the ground and stools. I don't even think they check to see if we were ok. The 3 of us paid our tabs and left. I haven't been to Tiki Thai much this year but when I had, I never had an issue. The service from the bar manager was appalling to say the least. There are so many restaurants in Reston Town Center that we can spend our money at and we will from now on.
