Would have preferred more beans, meat etc. kind of pricey for a mostly rice filled burrito. The food was honestly pretty good especially for Mexican food in NorCal. I had a steak burrito with refried beans, mild salsa, and sour cream... chefs kiss. The service was really good, the sweet staff even wished my friend a happy birthday and overall they were so nice. Also the design of the place was so ADORABLE. Pick up order on a weekday evening. Carnitas burrito: meat had good texture, moist, flavorful. Rice was fresh and had flavor but nothing out of this world. No beans per request. The only con was the price to portion ratio. I typically get satisfied craving and mostly full on a "regular" burrito from all the trucks/restaurants in Oakland but this one had so much tortilla and small amount of meat & rice inside. Have you ever really wanted to love something, but it just doesn't love you back? That's kind of my relationship with La Mission. I really like their food. The first time I went here, I thought I finally found a new burrito spot to love. I felt like I had been hopping around trying to find a good consistent spot, without finding a home run. La Mission felt like it could be it for me. Their burrito was good, their hot sauce definitely had heat, and I thought next time I'll get it on the side. Unfortunately after that first time, I felt pretty bad afterwards, my stomach was not happy with me. But I tried a couple more times, I was pretty determined, and after each time, same result. I'm not sure if it's an oil or a spice or something, but every time I eat here, I don't feel good. I will echo what others have said that sometimes the wait is very long, the first time eating in person we waited for at least 30 mins for burritos. So yes, while taste-wise I endorse I sadly don't think I can keep eating here. read more

Love these chicken enchiladas verdes. Delicious food with good quality ingredients. The weight can be a bit long because they have a lot of takeout orders. I hope they might expand their restaurant because I love the place but it's really too small to feel at ease unless you just want a very very casual experience. Since I went to ninth grade across the street when Berkeley High was using that campus for the ninth grade class in 1982, I seem to recall that it was a Taco Bell prior and what would be a very small one now. For the food, this is my favorite Mexican place in either Berkeley or Oakland. Now if they would only grow their restaurant in perhaps a new location. read more

The service and the ambience is what makes this place a 4-star for me. There is outdoor seating with overhead heaters for those that get cold quick. The menu was quite extensive, but my group ordered mixtures of tacos, quesadillas, and burritos. It's worth a try, and I don't have any complaints outside of feeling it's overpriced. Best Mexican Food in Berkeley. Everything I have ordered at La Mission is superb. I just returned from 4 years living in Mexico and it is difficult to find the goods, but I'm telling you, this is it. Try the Carnitas taco in the large crispy shell. Delicious. You really need only one to fill you up, but you can't help but order two. I liked the carne asada as well. The desserts are great, too. I lived in Berkeley for over a year now, and this place is close to home, but I never tried it. I was craving Mexican food last night, and there was nothing open late. This place was open until 11, so I put in an order through GrubHub and picked it up in 25 minutes. I got one of the tastiest burritos I had in a long time, and the taco I got was hella good, too. I'll definitely be coming here again. My partner got the potato taco, but she said that was kind of bland. Their regular taco, though, was so good. The salsa verde was so good, too. The only thing that would have made it better if they could have grilled the tortilla a bit. It was a huge burrito, and the tortilla was a little bit too soft, so it was hard to keep everything together (but I did). Glad this place I still open because I'm definitely coming back for tacos and burritos. I even went to town on the beans and rice I had on the side, and I usually don't. read more

La Mission is a small taqueria located on University Avenue in Berkeley. They have authentic, delicious Mexican food that comes in big portions. Behind the restaurant is a private lot, otherwise, there is street parking which can be a bit difficult. The ambience is really casual and they don't have waiter service. You order your food and pick it up; There are seats inside, but the patio has more seats. Good place to sit down on a sunny, beautiful day. The prices here are moderately inexpensive considering the portions given. Also good for take out, or you can order delivery from DoorDash! Yes! For lunch, I like to order their Chile Colorado burrito. You can get pork or chicken; I usually get the pork. The meat is smothered in spicy, red Chile sauce that makes it so tasty and delicious. The burrito is huge and very filling as I like to add cheese, sour cream, and guacamole I also love the salsa that comes with this as it enhances the flavor profile. I also like ordering this since they make this quick which is a plus if you're on your lunch. I have also tried their Ceviche which comes with chips. It was ok, but not that great. I felt it has been out as it didn't taste too fresh. Their horchata is also pretty good. If you're in the mood for one, I recommend getting it. I remember passing this place so many times and not giving it a second thought. An old Taco Bell that's another Mexican restaurant. Then my husband started to mention it because co-workers raved about the food. Next I see a fellow Yelper check in and the food photogs posted were mouth watering. I bookmarked and said to my husband, "Let's try out La Mission for our next date night". He was all for it. I'm glad we arrived when we did. It got super busy while we sat and waited for our order. So much so, we let the counter lady know we were going to go outside. She acknowledged us and away we went. Nice spacious patio with heaters hanging from the rafters. It was a windy evening but didn't make any impact on us and the heaters kept us from getting a chill. I also appreciate the ethnically correct music playing. Really helps with the ambiance. Our food was brought to us fairly quickly. See attached pictures for our order. Food: Excellent. Not greasy. Temp was just right. I asked for Jalapeños to be added to my Chimichanga. But even without, the chicken was very flavorful. I wasn't a fan of the rice or beans. But neither were poorly made. Just nothing to write home about. I did get a taste of the mole' on my husbands Flautas. Oh man! Chocolate, Chipotle goodness...or at least that was my tastebuds interpretation! Service: Excellent. I was having some major Mexican food withdrawals after coming to the bay area, because SoCal is seriously the home of amazing Mexican food. My sister brought me to La Mission after two years, and I have to say that as much as I bash on the food here, but when I ate my burrito, I was in heaven. We ordered: -Barbacoa (lamb) burrito with black beans ($0 charge), mild sauce ($0 charge) and guac ($1.80 extra) // I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS MY WHOLE LIFE. Super yummy meat that's soft enough to chew on or swallow whole. I literally devoured my burrito in 5 minutes. -Al Pastor (pork in adobe) with pinto beans ($0 charge), medium sauce ($0 charge) and guac ($1.80 extra) // Didn't try it yet...but it's sitting in the fridge for my breakfast tomorrow! -Santa Fe Salad // I really did not like the chicken on this. It tasted like dried tilapia and wasn't very flavorful. But if you must get your greens here...doesn't hurt. -Ceviche // Not too lime-y, so I can taste the freshness of the seafood! I wish everything wasn't so chopped up though! I like texture! But yay for lots of chips! -Chicken quesadilla with sourcream // a little too dry for my liking, but I liked that the tortilla was soft. Maybe drench it with the hot sauces? Pros: -Quick service! Super nice people and they bring out your food super quickly! -Great portion sizes! I love how my tortilla: ingredients ratio is perfect. Most places are stingy on the meat, but this place gives you enough of everything in one bite! -AMAZING flavors! I might as well go buy myself a haas avocado with $1.80...but I guess that's what happens when we have a drought. Looks like a former Taco Bell building (not that there's anything wrong with that). Has the usual taqueria items, but they are known for their moles. They have the more common Mole Poblano and a spicier Mole Guajillo made with pumpkin seeds and guajillo peppers. I got the Pork Mole Poblano Burrito ($7.40 or $8.07 w/ tax) Simple ingredients compared to the typical "Mission Burrito" with just rice and choice of beans. The mole had rich, complex flavors with sweet notes from pineapple and was lightly spicy. Which is fine because the food was awesome but still could've went somewhere else for what I spent. The place is really cute, nicely decorated and very clean. They have a lot of outdoor seating which is great for a nice lunch on a summer day. They even have desserts to choose from. I loved the horchata, it just had a lot of grains that I wasn't down with unfortunately. A hidden gem on the pathway to UCBerkeley, La Mission serves authentic Mexican dishes for a bargain (okay, it's not that inexpensive but good quality food without restaurant prices was good enough for me). Although its building architecture may catch your eye, it can easily be overlooked by the plethora of excellent restaurants Berkeley has to offer. Through the help of yelp, however, I was able to scour the results of cheap, yet tasty eats and decided upon this place. I brought my entourage and found a nice parking spot behind the building. I think it's great when places have their designated parking, especially in Berkeley. No quarters necessary! It was a short walk, skip or, if you prefer, hop to the register. We were there in no time. No line, no fuss. How it's set up: line up to order, pick a seat (any seat) and food will just magically appear in front of you. Voila! I may just have exaggerated on the last part because the nice servers behind the counter actually bring the food to your table according to the table number. I ordered the steak burrito with all the works and split it with my partner. Best $11 I've spent on a burrito in awhile. It certainly hit the spot! No complaints. Service was excelente y rapido (translation: excellent and quick). I saw the corners of my partner's mouth turn upward. Being that he was born and bred in the land of the carne asada fries (SoCal), I think it was a good sign. In my short four-year stint in Southern California, I didn't think I could find a comparable Mexican place to eat when I moved back to NorCal. I was on a quest to find the next best burrito. Had the pour-over coffee, was large and strong. Convenient parking out back, nice outdoor seating area with heaters, service was great and the place was clean. Would recommend the menu items we had. La Mission is an old school family run taqueria joint that provides traditional authentic dishes like soft tacos, burritos and enchiladas. They also prove you don't have to destroy the old school classicism of the architecture of Taco Bell in order to achieve your dreams of culinary success. In fact, all you have to do is enlarge it, create an inviting patio, and make a few updates and bim bam boom you have yourself a colorful joint on University Avenue doing big-plate Mexican food incredibly well. La Mission is clearly catering to the college crowd with a huge menu and a small interior, your meal was meant to be eaten in either the patio or your dorm room. We came on a Saturday afternoon for a late lunch/ early dinner as driving up University Avenue was its usual trafficy mess but once you arrive, thankfully the parking lot wasn't full. My dining mate was really craving enchiladas and other places that I considered in the area were either too expensive or closed for siesta. So La Mission we went. Obviously upon entry you'll notice this was a former fast food franchise turned down-home Mexican eatery with an overwhelming number of dishes on their menu. Although their prices certainly match inflation meaning their not super cheap considering your surroundings, they provide plenty of food for what you're getting. Since their known for all of the delicious sauces, we ordered the Dos Enchiladas Mole served with rice and a choice of pinto, black or refried beans. The only option we got from our cashier was Chicken even the menu says you can order Pork. I was personally overwhelmed by the menu, but was intrigued with one of the Specialty Mole Burritos namely the Pipian Mole (again with the sole option of Chicken) with mole guajillo sauce. I can positively say that the burrito was one of the more unique burritos I have tasted, a more on the sweet side that savory. I did get it with refried beans and hot tomatillo red chile but our cashier chose not to upsell with guacamole or offer any complimentary cheese or sour cream as the menu stated. I did love my horchata drink as it was one of the most cinnamon filled beverages I have had in my life! I like the fact that La Mission is open until midnight six days a week and until 11pm on Sunday. Few places in the area can say that. Next time I'm going to open my palate to other dishes on the menu including the highly suggested Barbacoa (lamb) burrito. La Mission is where you go to stress-eat a burrito after a bad day they may be a small, but portions are big enough and mostly everything is covered in their delicious sauces, so literally you can't go wrong with at least trying something on the menu to satiate your appetite. read more

I've passed this place so many times on the 51B but I never stopped in. Finally, I took the time to try this place, and I'm so glad I did! The interior is quite small with only few tables. But, the outdoor patio area has heated lamps over each table. I personally loved sitting outside because it was more roomy and it just so happened to be really nice evening weather. I ordered an al pastor burrito as well as chips and salsa. The burrito was HUGE and so flavorful! I got black beans, rice, sour cream, and cheese in it. The salsas all tasted fresh and my favorite was the verde. It was spicy and citric while the spiciest salsa was more chipotle flavored. The chips were definitely fresh and were shaped kind of like a moon! They had a perfect crunch, too. Overall, a really excellent experience. The workers were very gracious, and it was a great casual place for dinner. Everything tasted authentic and fresh. I will definitely be coming back very soon.
