I have been coming here for years and each time is better than the next. The food is great and always plenty for left overs. The staff is always so happy and very helpful in deciding for me when I don't know what I want. You got to try it. Very friendly and good people.

La Mex has the best burritos in the world, and that is not an exaggeration. The La Mex burrito is the thing I miss the most about living in Richmond. To this day I cannot eat a burrito from any other restaurant because I know it will be a disappointment compared to a La Mex burrito. The ingredients are always fresh, the salsa is the best you will have ever tasted, and the portion size is huge. For $9 you can get a large burrito enough for two meals for me; hence its popularity with local college kids. The inside isn't anything fancy, it's kind of a hole in the wall place with a small Mexican grocery section. Pay by cash if you can, there is a 25 cent charge if you pay by card, and there are no signs that tell you this. If you are driving through Richmond and are looking for a place for a quick and cheap meal, this is the place to go for sure.

Steak tacos deluxe. $7.00. Can't beat it. Amazing taste.

Best authentic Mexican in Richmond. Has El Rodeo and El Bronco beat by miles! Large portions, tasty food, friendly staff, and can't beat the prices. I can't wait to be back to try more! Don't be intimidated by the exterior- the interior is simple and clean. They put all their energy into the food. And that's alright with me! Worth it!

Found this gem while passing through Richmond, Indiana. The best authentic mexican food we've had. The staff was so welcoming and friendly, very personable. You will not regret stopping in. Super affordable!

I was craving tacos and a trip to Cincinnati or Dayton or Indianapolis seemed out of the question with the $0.30 price hike on gasoline since the weekend. La Mexicana has awesome tacos. I can put them up against those from El Rodeo and Hacienda El Camino Real (Cinco de Mayo?) any day and La Mexicana wins. She is a tough competitor. I thought that the options were a bit thin. I guess I should have looked over the menu again, but I didn't see fewer (1 or 2) tacos combos on the menu. $7.00 for three tacos isn't horrible, considering I got the grilled steak (asada) selection, although the meat was a bit chewy. I usually use ground sirloin at home and avoid meat problems. Once again, I'm missing the lettuce and tomatoes that I had growing up and I've gotten other places, but the onion and cilantro were appreciated. The taste reminds you of what you're missing other places, and the verde (green) salsa added to the mixture in a most positive way. I later tried the Cuban sandwich/Torta Cubana and it wasn't much like any Cuban sandwich I'd had in Florida, so I'm not sure where they got their recipe but Cubans To Go on Lee Road in Orlando still has the best Cuban sandwich north of Miami. Too bad, La Mexicana. Of course, the decor does not add anything positive, but there weren't extra creatures running around the place that I could see, and they had the county health certificate right out front for all to see. Ask places like Golden Corral to do the same. If people are looking for a grocery store, they're out of luck except for canned and bottled goods. If they're looking for friendly service and good food, this place is better than the other choices. I'm not sure whether their English is slim or it was just me, but we both ended up speaking Spanglish (Espanglés!) and it worked out just fine. Update 2013.08.21: I was in San Jose, California a little over a week ago and tonight, I was wondering how La Mexicana stacked up to the tacos I had there, since the other places in town are really bad. So, I got more Carne Asada tacos--I still wish they came as 1 or 2--and they were just as good but there was too much food. The tacos in San Jose use miniature tortillas but they're $1.75 or $1.85 each, where I went. Three were plenty, and two of the larger size tacos would have been fine here. Be sure to order Supreme instead of Regular, since the salsa doesn't have all the stuff in it. I didn't want the cheese but lots of people like cheese with their tacos--I just prefer the lettuce, tomatoes, and onions--the way we got them at home, in San Jose.

Wow, talk about real authentic Mexican food. I love Mexican food and it seems that it's hard to find. And when you do find it it's TEXMEX and not real Mexican. The prices were out of this world cheap and the portion size was HUGE! I ordered a chicken burrito and it was like the size of two chipotle burritos. I couldn't even finish it all in one setting. They make your food fresh to order and you can see and smell them cooking your food. The food come out piping hot which is fantastic. And the quality is just over all good. If you are looking for a great Mexican restaurant, this is the place to go! By far the best food and will definitely be returning for more. A major plus: all their meals come with avocado

Looks questionable from the outside but go in anyway, you won't be sorry!

I make frequent trips between Indianapolis and Dayton but usually don't stop for lunch until I get to Dayton. I hadn't found anyplace along the way that was worth exiting the interstate for, and Dayton has several restaurants that I really like, so I usually wait until I arrive to dine. However, this time I missed breakfast and was wondering if there was anyplace halfway decent to grab lunch. I was craving Mexican so I searched Yelp and discovered La Mexicana. I hit the link for directions and made my way to this dicey, divey, hole-in-the-wall grocery and restaurant. Not being familiar with Richmond I never would have found it without GPS. I am so glad I did, though, because La Mexicana turned out to be a real find. After removing all valuables from my car I entered the restaurant and was greeted by a very friendly employee. He pointed out the menus and explained all the burrito options. I ordered a burrito that was stuffed with cheese, avocado, rice, onions, lettuce, tomatoes and cilantro. My burrito was prepared to order, very quickly, and it was huge. Seriously, enough to feed two! All the ingredients were fresh and tasty. I chose the spicy red sauce and it was indeed spicy and flavorful. The rice was excellent! Often it seems that rice stuffed in a burrito is bland and used a just a filler for people who don't want meat in their burrito. This rice was so good that I could have lapped it out of a bowl. Happily. I will be returning soon to try try the tacos. Everything I saw being served looked absolutely authentic and delicious.

The picture doesn't do justice. I ordered a steak salad. They let me choose my toppings I ordered guacamole and salsa. This is one of the best steak salads I have ever had. The flavor was interesting the salsa and guacamole were good. This place is amazing! Don't let the outside of the building fool you. Great find.

    Adobada tacos

We are always excited to see authentic Mexican food in Indiana. When passing through Richmond we couldn't pass up the chance to get some tacos from an authentic spot in a smaller Indiana town. Overall the food was pretty good, but the atmosphere of the restaurant unfortunately detracted pretty heavily from the experience. The adobada tacos were very good. They had excellent flavor and these tacos are not a common variety as far as I have seen in Indiana. I would definitely recommend them over the al pastor, which weren't bad but definitely weren't among the better end of the tacos al pastor I have had. (They did get points for having pineapple in them though.) My mom's Chino's quesadilla was pretty good too. Overall not the greatest Mexican we have had but still a solid 4/5. The place itself was what brought this from 4 to 3. If I lived in Richmond I would definitely order takeout rather than eat inside the restaurant. If it had looked inside like the pictures that have been posted on Yelp, it would have been fine. We're completely fine with a no-frills environment. I wasn't even bothered by the ceiling light flickering on and off. But here, there was dirt and grime built up where the floors meet the walls. The tables were decently clean, but sitting in there looking at the dirty floors and walls of the dining area was enough to detract from the experience. Normally I don't comment on the ambience of restaurants but here it needed to be noted because it affected our experience. That being said, the food and service were decent and I would be willing to return, probably not as a dine-in meal.

Don't let the run down exterior scare you away. Very clean inside. Very friendly staff. Great food. Lots of character.

If your drivin' through, this little gem is only a mile or two off I-70. Don't let the run down exterior scare you away. I know it looks like a meth lab but It is very clean inside. Friendly staff makes you feel welcome. Great food. Full of character! All the county sheriffs eat here so it's safe. t's also a Mexican market so you can pick up some great spices and a bag of Mexican Chiclets to go! Dine in or carry out. Go here. You'll dig it.

I buy a tank of gasoline and go next door to Rally's for food. In fact, I've probably never bought anything inside the old store because it was so busy and crowded. Their strength is their Speedy Rewards program. You get points on purchases and discounts and coupons on the other side. The company is quick to raise prices on gasoline, but this location out of the three in town is the slowest to raise prices. Maybe, this one has more business because of I-70. The good thing is that they have so many pumps and the pay at the pump works just fine, even asking for your Speedy Rewards card before you buy anything. Also, I've never had to go inside for a receipt, as the paper always seems to be sufficient. Competence is a virtue, right? Last Saturday, I thought it a bit strange to leave the two basketball games and find that the place was closed at 9:00 p.m. Wouldn't people want to order pizza after a game? Tonight, there was only one game and I arrived at 7:30. Everyone working there was friendly. As they were mopping, I thought that they were closing early, even though it said 9:00 p.m. for closing. I ordered a mini pizza with "The Works" and the clerk told me that it would be 6 minutes and asked if that was still okay. I usually wait at least 10 minutes for pizza elsewhere. They didn't ask me to pay until the pizza was done. The price wasn't bad but I had hoped for some pizza + drink special which they didn't have--something other Noble Roman kiosks have. The pizza was good and the ingredients were sufficient. I'll return more than a few times. The Mountain Dew didn't have any funny flavor and the mix was good. I didn't really notice a lot of their prices but they were consistent with a convenience store. Update: They've changed the pizza and it is worse. I took the pizza to the counter to talk to the person working there because it doesn't look anything like The Works pizzas I've had--other than being circular with a crust--and I was told that some of the ingredients were under the cheese now. I was told that they're not buying green peppers any longer. It didn't taste right, so unless I'm having a strong desire for that pizza, I won't return. They're still friendly and helpful but it's just another convenience store now.

I bought 3 lottery tickets numbered 18,17,16 all attatched and from the same roll that I had purchased 3 losers (20,21,22) from earlier before this shift. So I was down $30 and on a mission. I scratch three more losers. I look at the numbers and only one ticket, 19, had been snagged and I'm $60 in so I decide to go for another 3. I get the same lady that sold me the last 3 I had just got. I tell her I'll take three more. She goes to the other side and gets lottery tickets off of that roll and I told her no I would like them from the same roll that I just got from. This is when she informs me that she got the last ticket from that side and the two others were from the side where she just got these 3. I'm thinking to myself as I'm walking back to the car with these three tickets from a different side. When did lottery tickets end at 16? I had the three tickets still attached and the 3 losers from the previous shift. I watched her only go to one side and bring me three tickets from one side. So while I'm scratching these three tickets from another roll, I'm thinking you know what win or lose I'm going back in there and I'm gonna show the manager, that was standing right by us while she said that whole lie, my older tickets and see if she can shine some light on it. The manager had a register open also because it's early morning pretty busy so I get her and I asked for three more tickets and apparently she overheard me say something about the other roll so she got me three tickets off of the roll that I originally wanted imagine that, it was still the same roll and the numbers all lined up with the ones I had gotten earlier. So now I'm in my car scratching these tickets realizing that apparently she knows that there's some winners left and she's called somebody to come in to purchase them. So I keep buying them in 3s, from the lying employee who is eatingcrow as she hands me the tickets. I hit like 3 5x a couple bags and a bonus so It gets to where there are 4 left and I was just gonna get the rest and head to the house. Well her buddy finally showed up and got the remaining ones. I know this because a man, I don't know, exited with some lottery tickets in hand and just looking at me. So I went back in and asked for the remaining four, she let me know that the manager just put a new role in. So I cashed out and she told me to have a nice day. First thing she said since being put on deadmouth for that fraudulent lie she put out there right by the manager. As I walk to my car that guy is still looking at me. I smiled and said you got those last tickets. He grinned and acted as if he didn't know what I was talking about. So while it's obvious that some shady things are taking place, and I will no longer buy lottery tickets from there or actually probably any speedway because it seems like management may be in on it I still made out better than When I first returned. I was down $30 but after all was scratched and done (get it? like said and done) I walked away just $15 down.

My husband had the breaded tenderloin, which was phenomenal. The breading was seasoned well and the pork, while thick, was tender and juicy. The $7 sandwich included two large tenderloins with all the fixings. The large bun didn't hold up, but they rarely do on a good tenderloin. It was a 5 star tenderloin.
