The tortilla chips were delicious but the salsa was watery & had little flavor. I ordered 2 tacos with rice & refried beans while hubby got Shrimp Delight. He really liked his meal. I didn't care for mine as the taco meat was very salty. The refried beans were also too salty. Our server was polite & attentive. The ambiance was cozy with a typical Mexican restaurant vibe. Nice Mexican ambience and outside sitting. Had a dinner. We were there around 8 pm on Saturday. Not too crowded. We were given a table right away inside but we opted for outside dinning. Service was slow but we were served tortilla and salsa right away. We were not in rush either. Ordered a veggie special burrito for 8.99 and plate f for veggie having quesadillas with rice and beans. Order a guacamole as a side. Kids meal was veggie burrito. Guacamole tasted good, tinge of garlic and cilantro was awesome. Salsa was mild but I understand it's meant for all. burritos and quesadillas were testing good. Overall it was fun food. They do have Modelo and Buf light on tap, no Corona. Your run-of-the-mill Mexican restaurant. I'm sure if I lived in Richmond I'd appreciate it more, but from an outsider perspective it's just an average Mexican place. I ordered the chile verde. It was pretty good, no better than any others I have had at similar restaurants around Indiana. The rice and beans were just "blah." Felt the same about their salsa, just okay. It was pretty busy while we were there, and we had a huge party, so I can't blame them at all for being a bit off on the service, but still figured I'd mention it. Our table of 5 started had to share 2 menus, we only had enough napkins and silverware for 1 or 2 people at the beginning, we never got a second basket of chips for the rest of our salsa, and I never got the tortillas that come with the chile verde. None of it was a big deal and I'd chalk it up to them being busy, but always worth mentioning. read more

Mexican restaurants seem a dime a dozen, but it's difficult for people to separate the Tex-Mex, California Mexican, and real Mexican restaurants. I was a bit confused by the new location's layout, but the place is decorated with a good choice of colors, making it cheerful. The hostess seemed a bit preoccupied, as if she had so many jobs there, she couldn't keep them under control. The waiter was very friendly, and friendlier after I started speaking Spanish. During my meal, no one checked on me until late, as if they were overwhelmed and could not afford staff to handle all the customers. I would imagine this being an outcome of building a new place in the middle of a problematic economy. I had good service but if I had been expecting lots of attention, I didn't get it. Had I asked, I'm sure I would have had whatever I wanted, quickly. The food was good. I had a single beef enchilada with rice and beans. I go to El Rodeo specifically because of their enchilada sauce. While it's not terribly difficult to make, many places mess it up. I didn't have tacos this time, but I'm surprised that the beef tacos don't have lettuce, onions, and tomatoes. My mum learned to make these when we lived in San Jose, California from her friend Lupe, and they are consistent with what I've had elsewhere in California and Florida, as well as other states. I'm just surprised that neither Mexican restaurant in Richmond does it. In any case, good food, reasonable service, and a clean dining room add up to a good experience. read more

I love this place. I am originally from Indiana and grew up with El Ro being a staple restaurant. There is the newer east side one and the older west side one. The food is always really good and well priced. They do student discount as well as the school card discounts. They are always very kind and I believe the manager always comes out and says hello to my mother when she comes with me. As an adult, I've lived in Mississippi, Missouri, Texas, California, and Georgia, and every time I go home to visit my parents in Richmond, I stop here because I've never had Mexican food that tasted as good. Maybe I am bias because it's in my hometown but the food is awesome. The east side location looks great and is very clean. You can tell that it is very authentic in there. Bright and cheery decor and food is pretty standard Mexican/American fare. I was really put off by our server who seemed disinterested and inconvenienced to be helping us. We had to wait for him to walk by to ask for drink refills and chips for the dip we ordered/received. The line to pay was long, as no one was at the register for a while. There are plenty of other great dining choices in Richmond, so there's no need to come here again. read more

I LOVE Mexican food and EL Rodeo hit the spot. The price also wasn't bad. I ordered fijitas con chorizo and it was DELICIOUS. I got way more food then anticipated. And it was piping hot. You could literally see it sizzling and steaming. As soon as we came we were seated. The brought us chips, salsa and queso. About 5 minutes later our waiter took our order. No more than 10 minutes later the food came out. Everything was great. I paid $21 for my meal which was the fajitas and a split price of the margarita pitcher. if you ant good authentic Mexican food thats fresh and hot, this is the place. I will be returning for a life time. Only bad part I had out of the whole visit why its getting 4 starts instead of 5 is that our waiter was extremely rude. When we asked him questions about the food, he would look at us as if we were dumb. Whoops, I put this review on the wrong location. Now I'm fixing it! Oh El Rodeo. How come your service went kaput when you changed locations? I used to visit El Rodeo at least once a week for my lunch break. I never had a problem of getting in and out in an hour which everyone knows can be hard to do if you want to eat someplace you can sit down and have someone wait on you. The food always comes quickly, but the past 3 times I've gone we've had to wait a considerable amount of time for someone to take our order and deliver the check. I love to have lunch here, but I'm afraid I'm not going to be able to visit this location anymore if they can't find a way to speed up their service. read more

This is my favorite restaurant on Earth. I haven't lived in Richmond for 5 years but anyone who really knows me knows that I am obsessed with this place. I have been frequenting it since it was just that tiny little store in the Wal-Mart plaza. I come into town only once or twice a year but I make sure if I do nothing else, I eat at El Rodeo. What do I love? Everything. The flavorful cheese sauce, the delicious sour cream, the perfect salsa, the huge affordable meals. Ah, I could go on but I will spare you. Just suffice it to say the food is delicious! Why oh why can't I take this place with me when I head home? I live in DC now and I have literally tried every highly rated Mexican restaurant in town. Every single last one of them. Usually I find bland food, super overpriced, tiny portions. El Rodeo blows all of them out of the water. I wasn't a fan of the food or the creepy waiter. I think there are places with better Mexican food nearby. Decided to give this place a second chance when we were absolutely starving around Christmas. It wasn't much better the second time around- incredibly slow service. There is a second El Rodeo on the west side of town that the Earlham students often frequent. That one is slightly better (meaning quicker service) at lunch. read more

I was in the neighborhood and I need to find a Mexican place in my new town, it's basically a requirement for me. Ended up just getting take out and placing it in the restaurant. The Good: The staff was pretty helpful and they all checked in on me as I was waiting. Food came out very fast, although I wasn't there at a busy time. I thought the food was good and I got a lot of it for the price. The cheese dip was especially flavorful. The Bad: The guacamole lacked flavor and I love guac, so that's a disappointment. I think I'll check out the west side location next because it seems to get better reviews. I'd definitely go back, if only to check out the drink selection. read more

Have eaten at this El Rodeo several times with the last being in mid-February 2016. This time we had the Quesadilla Grande which was one of the specials that day. The food was seasoned well without being too spicy and there was enough for one of us to take some home. The service was good without being hovering. I was surprised that they now serve Noble Order beer which is brewed in Richmond. The food is good, the service is decent and the cost is not much more that you would spend at a fast food place for average/below average fare. We will gone back, usually three or four times a year. read more

I am from Texas and have lots of experience with Mexican food. This is, by far, my favorite restaurant. First...NO ONE, in my opinion, makes better margaritas. Second...They have the best Mexican-inspired chicken soup that I have ever tasted with a flavorful chicken stock, lots of crunchy veggies, and nice chunks of fresh chicken. Third...their rice has the authentic flavor that comes when it's made right (browned in oil before adding water and cooking it with onions, tomatoes and bell peppers). Fourth...refried beans remind me of a friend's abuelita. Cooked beans ground and fried...fresh. For years I have been a big fan of the salsa and chips, but in the last year at the location I regularly visit, it has begun to taste like it has oregano in it. Another location in town, one I rarely go to for this reason, began to have the oregano taste. Not good. Maybe they are putting in much more cilantro than before. (Cilantro and oregano have similar flavors, but oregano is stronger). read more

This is a really good Mexican restaurant for the mid-west, but If it were someplace that had a respectably sized Mexican population would never eat here. The food is _definitely_ catering towards the mid-western palette. I really wonder if any of the local Latinos would actually eat here. There is no heat in anything, even the dishes that should have a little heat. They also have a lot of dishes on the menu that read as being variations of Tex-Mex and not Mexican. But all that being said, the food does have a good flavor, the portions are huge, and the service is decent. So while it isn't what I want, it is what I can get. But if I were reviewing this in comparison to a west coast restaurant or a restaurant in Mexico, then I would give it a 2. read more

The food is okay... but oh my God, THE SERVICE. The service in this place is horrendous. Made the mistake of going on a Sunday afternoon one time. There were about 50 people just hovering in the doorway - not a single staff member to be found - and a TON of EMPTY tables. Took forever to get seated - then forever to have someone take our order. 2 other couples came in, ordered, and receieved their food before we saw ours. We were about to get up and just walk out. Our waitress was slightly apologetic and mumbled something about someone threw our order slip out and they had to re-make it. I can guarantee that our food was not "remade" it was reheated. After we finally got our food, no one ever came back to check on us or offer refills. Such a waste of money. So said friend went to your restaurant tonight, Saturday, September 15th of 2018 and ordered a grilled chicken quesadilla. The staff at this establishment gave her the shredded chicken one with all the veggies. My friend did not order this so they took the order back and when they got her the right order she looked at the quesadilla and there were still onions on it!! The staff at this establishment was so lazy that they just picked off the veggies. My friend deserves the best and a chicken quesadilla with onions on it is not the best and that is why me and my family will never be going to this establishment any longer!!! read more

Our favorite mexican restaurant in the area! Okay - so I can't really speak to how authentic it is or not, but it is definately good food. Recently went with some family for lunch. DH and I ususally split the fajitas for two which we can never finish - and we're good eaters. I love the combination of meats and the leftovers are just as good.
