Stopped by this spot after leaving a late night show at Starr Barr, was it a bit of a walk? Sure. Was it worth it?! HELL YES. Open late, possibly 24/7 the food was freshly prepared and affordable. The music was cool and set a chill environment while every one sobered up anticipating the food. I'm not one to write a review off of drunk trips but the chicken, yellow rice and beans here is really special. The chicken was flavorful, moist and seasoned on the skin. A good skin is key to an incredible meal man. Seriously, it's the first part of the food we taste, make use of it. Portions here were insane. La Isla has all the things I like in any quality neighborhood eatery: dodgy feel, grimy interior, old school vibe, zero pretension, greasy but tasty food. It only gets better knowing they're open at all hours, which means late night visits and early morning hangover meals are possibilities. Most of the menu is $10 and below. Depending on one's appetite, it could even be $5 and below. Not exactly diet friendly, a lot of it consists of fried foods and fatty meats (#1). At this point, they might accept credit cards but it would be safer to bring cash. Especially with the latter, I've yet to be charged tax. A great way to start it off is an order of the papa rellena ($3) a stuffed potato ball with ground meat and fried to crispy perfection. They make for a fabulous snack and a filling one at that. I also love the carne guisada ($6), a chunky beef stew that goes fabulously well over a bed of rice. Each time I'm here, I see an order of the chicharones de pollo ($7), which is a hearty, crunchy, and juicy rendition of fried chicken with some Latin flair. I'm not crazy about the morcilla (blood sausage), the pernil (stewed pork), or the overdone chuletas (pork chops). Lastly, stay away from the "tacos mexicanos" which are messy, kind of bland, and ultimately unappetizing at $3 a pop. Some great representation of Puerto Rican cuisine on display here, all in a nice windowed counter style restaurant. Keep in mind there is little seating, but you can get food to go as well. Most of the menu items are under $8, but that does not sacrifice the quality. I saw the chef multiple times come out with an entire half of roasted pig (Pernil) with very crackly skin. Indulged myself in a bit of that with some rice and beans and mofongo. Just be sure that if you go in to respect the ever moving staff behind the counter, and humbly enjoy the delights they put in front of you in this staple of community. read more

This is my go to Cuchifritos, I will not go anywhere else ! They are open 24 hours, 7 days, 365 days a year ! I love that they are open during the holidays. Everytime I come I'm never dissapointed. If you decide to stay and eat there you will have to wait until a barstool frees up. So depending on how hungry I am I'll either wait for a stool or take it home. I just really like eating food that is freshly made rather than take it home and have to reheat it. So I reccomend that you take a seat and enjoy ! It can seem confusing if you do not speak spanish but don't feel discouraged, the waiters will work with you and will try to explain it to their best capability. They have their usual by the window and its pernil, chicharron, maduros, pastelitos, papa rellenos etc. They always have that and sell it by the pound (Super cheap). Everytime I go there I always get a million things and never pay more than $25 for two people. I like going to places where I eat a meal and come out full for a reasonable price. They also have made to order menu and if you're into pork chops, I'd reccomend those ! Also, try their juices ! Its so good, I like the fruit punch. read more

To wash that down I asked for a small coconut juice. While I was eating an Asian woman approached me and others around me asking, "DVD?Movie? DVD?" I noticed the beans were a little burnt and the rice as well, but nothing unbearable. When I finished a waitress came over and cleared the table. The best to go cuchifrito joint EVER! I've been buying food from here since I was about 15 years old and I had a part time job at Kraupner Pharmacy next door. I went back recently and noticed they renovated the place and the food is just as good as it is if you were sitting at one of the mom and pop restaurants in Puerto Rico. So good! Never mind the fact that it's in the hood, there's no parking and it's under a train station where the hookers put themselves up for auction late at night, the food here is something to want to go back for even if you are far away and have no car anymore. This is not your typical Spanish food folks, THIS is Cuchifritos! All the innards that were not put on sale at the supermarket where put here, stewed for long periods of time and served with a side order of white or yellow rice. My favorite item from this place is the Morcilla (Blood Sausage). It's spicy and slightly on the hot side, and stuffed with rice. I remember growing up as a kid watching my grandmother fry a normal looking sausage to a black color, thinking it was burned, but the taste is what I remember the most. This place's sausage is MUCH is better. Their pernil is awesome. Their rice and beans are good too. We've tried their potato balls, rotisserie chicken, beef stew, acapurria, and plantains, and they were all very good. Another favorite would have to be the combination plate of Cuchifritos... So what is Cuchifritos? Stewed pig ears, stomach, and cow tongue. I don't like the cow tongue much but it does have a cross texture to steak and liver, so I can do with out that. Oh and these are served with boiled Yuca which is a root vegetable with a distinct taste, and served with boiled green bananas. If you can get them to give you a side of garlic oil to drizzle over the boiled veggies, even better. I would have rated this place a 5, but sadly I couldn't. Why do you ask? My husband and I went out of our way to go here for my father in law who was just in a very bad motorcycle accident to treat him to a plate of our favorite delicacy Cuchifrito. I ordered 2 plates of this stuff. In my excitement I brought it home back to Queens to dig right in, just to find my dish had been missing :( The 3 foot dude standing on the milk crates to check me out and was too fixated by my presence to fill my order the right way. He did however charge me for the entire order he screwed up. So I had no meal we completely went out of our way for. Another downer to this place, it seems like if you don't fit the profile of a typical ghetto Spanish person, they will continue to pass you and help their own kind. I've been going here since high school. The greasy pastellitos on display in the window let me know I've arrived to the right place. Look, I'm telling you now don't look for anything special. This is a Puerto Rican grease spoon spot. The prices are cheap. And I mean CHEAP! You can get a plate of rice, beans and your choice of meat; pollo/carne guisado, pollo al horno, morcilla etc., and a drink (there is only small or extra big so beware) of some tropical flavor; tamardino, coco, limonada, piña, ajonjoli and call it a day basically all for under $5. You can't beat that. I'm sorry you can't. And the food is tasty and filling. You can go on your day and not need to eat another plate of food. For real, they give you that much food. Other delectables that just warm my heart include mofongo, chicharrones, alcapurrias, and the old school jibaro en canoa. Look if you want to know about some old school Puerto Rican cooking come to this spot. It's great for hangovers, lazy summer days and just if you need your PR fix. I was let down by the beans, they did not tasted right on this Sunday, maybe the cook mixed it with the beans from the previous day and thought that eaters would not know. Also, the bean portion was too small and not enough for the rice. The roasted chicken was good and well cooked. I tried their long ripe platano maduro with the ground beef in the middle, they should left out that meat, it tasted bad, I took off the meat. The pork chicharron was nice and tasty, the smaller portion they sell is 5.00. I got it and shared it with my dogs, of course I can not eat all the fat, I just wanted a small piece to taste :) The Parcha juice is one of my favorites. They have a wide variety of juices. This is a Spanish restaurant with average food, no bad for a once in a while try. The sitting space is small, they have seats at the counter top so you have to wait till someone finishes eating, to get one of the seats. The experience is nice and weird at the same time, it's like eating at your home with a bunch of strangers around you, and you can get to pick conversations with them or just look at them. I don't always do Cuchifritos, and hardly ever in Brooklyn, but based on my two fritters and the size of the crowd, I'd say they are doing something right. Everyone raves about the meat filled potato ball but I didn't think it was all that great. Not to mention, mine had a funky sour smell and I had stomach problems after consuming some of it. So I'd double check those fried balls before leaving the store. Another food to avoid are tacos. It's as if you went to a Chinese food store and got sushi. Don't be stupid. What you should get: YELLOW RICE with chicken, mofongo, empanadas, cochiron and literally all the other fried food. Stay and enjoy your meal or take it to go, but don't forget to ask for their homemade hot sauces.
