La Fama is a little hole in the wall located next to a Spanish supermarket. You'll see a window known as a "ventanita" - and folks ordering Cortados or Cafe con leche. There are two sides to this place, a bar seating area or a small dining room - in either room you'll get full service. The women serving you and taking your orders are also squeezing fresh orange juice, and toasting fresh bread. The cooks in the back are loud and you're able to see it all happening right in front of you. It feels like your in someone's grandmothers home. The food, absolutely delicious. I tried something new, a bread beefsteak sandwich "bistek empanizado". It was delicious and huge. I kept half the sandwich for the next day's lunch. They also, of course, have all your favorite varieties of Cuban coffee. I had un cordadito to finish off the meal and it hit the spot. When you go plan to take your food with you. I like that you can see them making the food for you and they weren't cheap with the amount of chicken they gave me. They need to have tomatoes, chesse & other options to add to sand which like grill onions, etc!!! They take too long to cook the food. However I rather my food cook instead of getting sick but they need quicker service. Overall its okay but not worth me driving here. If you are a fan of homestyle cooking where you will feel like a local, La Fama is it! A few blocks but a world away from the trendy Wynwood Walls area, La Fama is almost literally a hole in the wall. No obvious signage, it's on the first floor of a 2-story strip mall. The best indicator is the to go window. The entrance is next to the market. You can sit at the counter and see the workers dishing up the food a few feet away. There is a slew of daily specials, which come with your choice of yuca or salad or plátanos and rice & beans. The portion sizes are VERY generous. I ordered a "small" bowl of chicken soup. The bowl was filled to the brim, with a big portion of chicken, chunks of carrots and noodles. Enlivened with a squirt of fresh lime, it was total comfort food. At $2.80, it's a bargain. I ordered one of the daily specials. The oxtails were savory and slightly spicy, studded with briny soft olives. It went beautifully with the congri. Unlike a lot of places, the food is not over salted. I also tried the banana milkshake - delicious! A handful of Honey Smacks cereal gave the shake a depth of flavor without making it heavy as ice cream would have. I ordered the yuca as my side but I saw plenty of people ordering the salad, which looked fresh and studded with big slabs of avocado. Service was super hospitable.
