While I wasn't in the mood for the namesake mariscos after having enjoyed a couple of fish tacos for lunch earlier today (prior to my visit to this place), La Costa Mariscos' 3-item plate was ample and delicious. Two crunchy shredded beef tacos, a chile relleno (baked rather than breaded and fried), and a cold Modelo were pure harmonious perfection. Great value, too, with the food plate running just a touch under $20. Two items probably would've filled me up but throwing on the 3rd only added $1, so why not? When I visited on a Tuesday around happy hour time, the dining area was packed and the bar area was far less busy. Looks like the bar area has potential to be a very lively happy hour with a circular bar layout that should facilitate conversations and fun times as well as some more intimate high-top seating around the edges of the bar area in case you're out with friends and want the bar vibe without needing to sit too close to strangers. High marks for the decor, ambiance, and food quality. read more

My rating is mostly based on the drinks and my service. I got tired of waiting for my sushi spot to open so I decided to give this location a shot. I had already tried the original one and I never cared for it. People were already seated when I walked in a little after 11am. My ticket says my server was Gerado and he was so great! I asked him for suggestions on what to order and also asked him about the drinks. I ordered a tostada de ceviche 4/10. Really overpriced fish on a tostada that doesn't go well with the ceviche. Fish needs to be cooked in lime and not lemon, as I tasted it was cooked in lemon which doesn't taste good. The fish is chopped in good pieces, but for me it'll stay at a 4. The salsa and chips were a 7/10 only because the chips outweighed the salsa. Salsa is nothing special, tomatoes are chopped to thick and has no spice to it. The tacos come with a lot of grated cheese which I took off, solid 8/10. Albondigas surprised me, if they were cooked a little longer they would've been softer the way I like them and they would've been 10/10, but they are a solid 9. The fish was really nothing special 3/10, but the rice was really good 10/10. The beans were dry 3/10. I ended up making burritos out of my leftover lettuce from my beef tacos and the basic fish and used the green salsa they offer. The blueberry whiskey sour was a 100!!! One of the best drinks I've ever had! The El Corazón tasted like a strawberry margarita with tad more berry puree 7/10. Next time I go I'll sit at the bar, either way I don't feel like my feet will touch the ground. read more

We like La Costa, no matter where they are located. We have been eating there for years and enjoy their friendly servers and owners. We recently ate at the Stockdale location (old Elephant Bar). We stopped in after a school event and were seated quickly. I didn't want too much, so I ordered off the appetizer menu and still felt as though I had ordered a meal. The shrimp tostada was piled high and it was all I needed. I ordered the house margarita. It tasted a little too much of s&s mix. I prefer better ingredients, so I should have ordered a special margarita and will be sure to check out the menu a little more closely next time to get more premium ingredients. I did appreciate the beauty of the glass with a pretty flower and fruit. Others at my table ordered the shrimp with garlic. The refried beans were very good. A lot of food! The garlic mix was spot on. We also ordered chicken & steak fajitas and they were amazing. I really appreciate the extra thought into what goes on the plate and the way they organize the dishes. Popped into this place for a quick happy hour shrimp cocktail. But, we missed it! My mom and I sat down and enjoyed a shrimp cocktail, shrimp, empanadas, and plenty of chips and salsa. We also ordered iced tea and it was delicious. This is my go to for a quick lunch that is not too heavy when I am running errands. It's perfect over summer, but was craving it on a very cold and foggy day. The service here is always prompt and attentive, even when I sit at the bar. The hostess was super sweet and found a perfect table for my mom who uses a walker. Once my mom sat at the table, she took the walker and stood it safely until we were done with our lunch. The restaurant inside is big. There is plenty of space for large parties as well. It is decorated with palm trees and other Mexican beach decor. I have a friend who has had two strokes and just found out that she has an aggressive form of breast cancer yesterday. We initially went here for happy hour since she was drowning in her tears. When we got there, we noticed the bar area only had bar-height pub tables. We very politely asked for the manager and explained the situation. We asked if they would be willing to honor happy hour. We were sitting at one table outside the bar area, and she could not safely sit up that high because she is in a wheelchair and unstable. To my astonishment, the manager refused to accommodate her disability for happy hour. The lack of compassion and customer care was mind-blowing. We will never eat there again. I have been a 100% La Costa patron, I have to say today was not good. We got seated, got drinks, took a minute for Grand Daughter to figure out what she wanted. Ordered, mind you there was a young lady taking care of all the tables around us, 1 man took care of the only table in that section, US. Ordered, not checked on until food came, no drink refill, no would you like more salsa. When waiter finally checked, HAD to ask for more salsa, food was mediocre today. Then the waiter GHOSTED us, never came back to our table, support staff took our plates and we WAITED. Watching young lady taking care of that section give stellar service to all tables around us. FINALLY after sitting there making eye contact with all support staff for over 15 minutes (trust me I looked at my phone) I FINALLY went to the hostess stand to say can I pay my bill here because our server has not been to our table. While this might not seem like a big deal, I've been to restaurants in big groups where they are stingy with the chips and salsa. La Costa is not that type of place, so that was nice! I ordered two cheese enchiladas, rice, and beans. The rice was better than I expected and the beans were okay. The enchiladas were also okay--it's hard to mess up two cheese enchiladas! Brought family visiting from New York here because we wanted them to try Mexican food from the West coast. Food did not fail us. It was definitely flavorful and filling. My favorite was probably the guacamole which came with chips. We wanted to try their deep-fried ice cream but we were too full. My wife, a Mexican born and raided in Bakersfield, knows her restaurants. La Costa started in two other locations, finally expanded to the Southwest, taking over the old Elephant Bar location. Once you walk in, the decor is extremely festive, and undeniably Mexican. Every section is decorated differently and thoughtfully. The service is very fast, i have come here for lunch and dinner, I was always in and out quickly. Now the food. While my wife turns her nose at most Mexican restaurants in the southwest, believing most authentic food is on the East Side, this is one place she actually enjoy going. I had the seafood fajitas. It has nicely charged fish filet, shrimp, scallop, and octopus pieces, with pepper and onion. Oh wow, I was thoroughly impressed. My wife had the aguachile (I had to google the spelling), it is sour, spicy, such a perfect dish for Bako summer and when you want to eat healthy. Our friend had the enchiladas, I did not get a bite but she said it was great. The kids had chicken fingers and fries. I will be going there often. I hope you drop by also. I met a friend here for lunch and though the server was prompt in taking our drink and food order, there were a few things that made the experience less than satisfying. For starters, my friend ordered a shrimp ceviche tostada and was brought out a tostada de ceviche mixed. When we got the waiters attention, he seemed confused about why she was sending the food back. Next, I went to unravel my fork from the napkin, and it had food debris stuck to it. Fortunately, my friend gave me hers since she wouldn't be using it. The meal itself was enjoyable, the flavors were poppin' in the enchilada sauce, rice and beans. All good. However, when my friend gave the waiter her credit card to pay, he came back with the receipts and no card. We had to wait for the server to come back around to ask for it back. That part was a little scary, especially with identity theft and fraudulent charges on the rise these days. Overall, the food is great, service can improve. Thankful to have this place right across the street from Mercy Southwest. The cafeteria was closed and I needed sustenance. La Costa has been a fave of our family for a long time, and that says a lot, because majority always chooses Asian cuisine - but not today! 7 min walk to La Costa, ordered to go at the front, Enrique (I believe that was his name) was very helpful to help me chose my meal based on my plant based diet. I got an enormous veggie burrito, salsa on the side and no rice (they are both made with chicken stock), a side of pot beans (no lard), and steamed veggies. Wayyyy filling and huge portions. Ordered guac and chips as well to take back to the family - my mom asked why I ordered too much, but alas, she ate almost all the guac and chips! Inside is a bit dim, plenty of seating, and a bar area to the right. I popped in to use the bathroom and that was clean as a whistle. I believe happy hour is M-F 3-6 but bar area only. I frequently eat at Mariscos and their food is good. This time my fajitas were burned to a crisp, the beans and rice were not hot. I ordered the combo fajita and the shrimp was blackened and dried out. The burnt beef was tough, the veggies were cremated but the chicken wasn't bad ok. Mariscos service was good, no complaints there. I think I will find another place with fajitas for now. We all ordered several of the appetizers, I ordered the veggie Mexican pizza and it was amazing ! My sister ordered the Shrimp Mexican pizza and she loved it . Came into La Costa around 4:30 on Friday to order a dinner we're hosting on Sunday I made my order with Vivian who helped me decide on my choices. The menu was way to big to many delicious choices. The restaurant looked ready for a Friday crowd large staff was ready, I was asked if I was being helped by a several employees while I was making my choices. I pick up on Sunday at 4:30 i picked up our order at 4:30 all was ready. I needed to make 2 trips.We had plenty way to much delicious food. This is one of my favorite Mexican restaurants in Bakersfield. Tay was my server today, So friendly, great job! What makes this a stand out restaurant in town is that the staff is well trained and the service and food is consistently good. I love the colorful decor. It's such a happy looking place. I ordered the Chapecanna today. Soooooo Yummy! It is a cold tomato marinade with a collection of fresh seafood. It contains octopus, shrimp & scallop in a cold gazpacho like tomato broth with avocado, cucumbers, tomato, cilantro & onion. It is such a light, cool & refreshing dish. From the salsa to the entree this whole meal was wonderful. We sat at the bar and the ambiance was personal and gave us access to the happy hour specials. There was a kind man going table to table asking if they would like a song to be played. He only asked for a tip. The salsa was yummy and the food was amazingly fast and delicious. The drinks were done well and I even customized mine for no extra charge. Our server was also our bar tender and he did a wonderful job checking on us. At 12:55 pm on 6/6/25 at table E6/5 I ordered the lunch special item #1 and asked for no onions please. The nice server acknowledged my request and took other orders. My food came out and had onions. I said mine had a no onion request. "E" said the item comes with onions. I agreed but had requested there were no onions. She agreed I requested that but said it comes with onions and it's on the menu and encouraged me to look at the menu. Then pointed out other items that come with onions on the menu. She blamed me for not knowing the menu. She acknowledged my request for no onions but said it comes this way. I asked if I could get another meat or the same taco meat without onions. She again pointed out the tacos come with onions and there are no substitutions. A co worker confirmed no substitutions. I asked her to take it back. She did offer to let me order another item which I declined. I sat and watched my table of 5 eat their food while I sat with no food. The manager never came over and a peer of hers said sorry. Our Family Tradition at La Costa Just Didn't Taste the Same La Costa has always been our go-to spot for family gatherings in Bakersfield. It's become a family tradition when we visit from out of state. Every visit, my mom, sister, and I order the same thing -- the Chile Colorado Chicken, because it's consistently been one of our favorite meals. During our visit on October 13, though, something had clearly changed. The dish looked more like a salsa than the smooth, flavorful sauce we've always loved. It was bland, the rice tasted old, and even the beans missed the mark. We mentioned to our server that it didn't look or taste the same, but nothing came of it. And truly, a Mexican restaurant should always get the rice and beans right. For a place that's always been so reliable, this visit fell short. I hope the consistency and quality that once made La Costa a family favorite return soon -- it's always been a special part of our Bakersfield visits. read more

Who the f does that? this isn't McDonald's.. what kind of ghetto behavior is this. Obviously there is a reason I didn't tip and I don't need to explain myself for it, however, we had no plates, no utensils, no napkins, etc I had to keep asking for stuff that the server was supposed to serve us with... I didn't complain about it because I shouldn't but that is just the basic things you can do for ur customers and if you want a tip then go above and beyond for them and make them leave happy, otherwise don't freakin ask or expect a tip for barely doing your damn job. & following the customer to their car demanding for an answer on why they got no tip????! Husband and I went in for a late lunch today, Saturday after Christmas. We were immediately seated. Not busy at all. Maybe 3 tables. The bar area was fairly busy though. Waitress came over took my drink order my husband was still deciding. She just walked away without saying anything else. Came back 15 mins later with my iced tea (had 3 ice cubes) and took my husband's drink order and we placed our food order. We ordered an appetizer also. Our meals came out fallowed by the appetizer 10 mins later. No silverware was given to us. We asked the cook or whoever brought us food. He returned with napkins only. Finally flagged our waitress down asked for silverware. My food was burnt and I was unable to locate anyone to inform them. However when it was time to pay the 85 dollar bill the waitress was quick to appear. Then she kept my actual change. Only returning the paper cash. So I guess she thought she was entitled to that. Well I left a penny tip because she was not present for most of our meal she literally just slid drinks on the table never coming to check on us or anything like that. We didn't even eat our appetizer since it was late in arriving. Got a box to take it home. The gentleman who brought it out was who I assume was a cook/chef. He was in a chefs black jacket. Never have I seen that happen. He shouldn't be running food to tables. He at least apologized for it coming out late. However the waitress couldn't have cared less! Food was mediocre at best and way overpriced. Won't be returning to this location. Leary about trying the second location too. read more
