    Cinderella pizza
    Joi B.

I was in Milan for five days and ate at La Colubrina twice. Once for lunch and once for dinner. I would have come daily if my short term rental wasn't a mile away. It is that charming, that delicious, that healthy and that lovely inside! When you're vegan, normally you spend time perusing menu for the one menu item that is plant-based... or you anxiously scan for dishes that can be veganized. At La Colubrina, everything is vegan (there are even delectable options for raw vegans) with the exception of a brief traditional pizza menu that uses mozzarella cheese. I took so much time trying to decide on that first visit because everything looked so delicious. Plate after plate of healthy, vibrant food passed our table and I knew I was in for so much greatness. I wasn't wrong. On my first visit, I started with a plate of polpettine di ceci (chickpea fritters). These may be the best chickpea fritters I have EVER had! They are absolutely delicious, salty and spicy and a pleasure to devour. They come with an aioli dipping sauce that is perfection. Next, the exquisitely named Cinderella pizza, which instead of a tomato sauce features a fairytalesque pumpkin cream. The crust is super crispy and it's also topped with freshly sauteed spinach, hazelnuts, truffle and olive oil. Try as hard as I could to eat only half, I failed. This meant I had no room for dessert and I knew I had to return (and show some restraint next time!) It happened. Two nights later, I brought some friends after we went to the ballet. As much as I wanted to, I didn't order an app so that I had room for the utterly divine tiramisu. But I'll get to that in a moment. Because the main dish that I ordered deserves a paragraph of its own. The Saltimbocca! I've never had the traditional preparation because in my entire life, I've consumed veal one time and that was when my mother snuck it on my plate, pretending it was something else (I was 9 and took one bite and refused to finish. Instinctively I knew that it was wrong to eat it and I wouldn't become vegan for another 10 years!) La Colubrina takes juicy celery root and deep fries it. Sandwiched between two slices is more of that beautiful spinach, lentil-based cheese and artichokes. I've never had anything like it and loved every bit of it. Not to mention the smashed oven roasted potatoes that are also some of the best I've ever had. Yes, a humble potato brought to greatness! About that tiramisu! It belongs in a vegan dessert hall of fame for sure, but it also holds its own alongside traditional tiramisu made with animal products. Decadent while not too heavy, sweet without being overly so, just the right hint of coffee and creaminess. I believe their desserts change daily but if they have it when you visit, it's an absolute must try. Service here is top notch. The sweetest women work front and back of the house (you'll get to meet the chef owner who is so so nice!). I love the story behind this restaurant. Sounds like they are true pioneers in the vegan Milan dining scene as they made a brave choice years ago to focus on a vegan section of their menu and then became fully focused on providing creative and delicious plant-based Milanese offerings to the local community. You can say that I'm a fan!

Cashew based pasta, can't recall the name

Our first day in Milan and we decided to step into La Colubrina seeing that they serve vegan dishes and also meat based dishes for non-vegans. Our waitress was very kind and spoke English (we're from the US & don't speak very well Italian) so we felt at ease. Everything on the menu sounded delicious but because I have a small stomach I decided just to order a pasta that was cashew based (I should've written it down darn!) and my fiancé ordered a pasta with seafood. Both of our dishes were amazing!, we cleaned our plates dry. At the end of our meal we had a beer and some limoncello and our waitress gifted us with a vegan pastry (I think it was a biscotti) which was so good as well. The entire ambiance was very warm and welcoming. I would recommend this place to all walks of life who want good Italian food. Next time I am in Milan I will definitely return!

I wish I could give this restaurant 10 stars! It is truly a blessing to have people like this in the world. We had an awful day in Milan. Our bags were stolen and had to stay the night to get a temporary passport the next day. So I looked for the closest vegan restaurant and stumbled upon this place. When we arrived they were closing but still took us in, which was so kind. The server was very helpful and recommended her favorite dishes and what she thought we would enjoy. She was on point! Everything we ate was absolutely phenomenal! All the wine is organic and vegan which is rare to find. When the food came the chef brought us her cheese plate that was 100% vegan and described in detail the ingredients and how much many month each cheese was cured. That was just the beginning. Each dish was so delicious, I wanted to eat everything on the menu. Unfortunately, we couldn't fit it all lol. We got our deserts to go so they could finish closing and I witnessed the chef spend time with every guest talking to them and making everyone feel at home. She did the same with us as we left. Her and the server welcomed us to come back and chanted "vegan strong" I literally walked away with tears in my eyes with gratitude and appreciation! It was truly a culinary healing experience. It was exactly what we needed after the horrible day we had. I wish I could go back everyday and support them! We need more people like this in the world!

A M A Z I N G !!!! Being plant based is difficult enough at home but when you travel It's almost impossible. La Colubrina has made my life so much easier. I ate there 2 Days in a row and would have been back today if they were not closed on Monday's. The great thing about this place (same location since 1983 ) they have a "regular carnivores " menu but several years ago brought a heavy vegan influence to the menu. Female vegan chef supported by a full female crew. Great job ladies. The desserts are all vegan. The wine list is impressive as well. Go for the Barolo you won't be disappointed. The soup was delicious. The puff pastry with vegetables fantastic and the gnocchi full of flavor. The husband enjoyed his carnivore dishes so much so he's bringing work colleagues for a meal. He raced about the citrus salad with prawns and the veal. He also said the lasagna was tops. Can't rave enough about this place. So much so I'm planning on heading there tomorrow one more time before I head home.

He's been in business for 44 years so obviously he knows but still charged us in USD which is kinda shady IMO. We decided to dine here due to all the reviews and photos posted. When we approached the restaurant, the owner immediately said "Ni Hao" which I thought was kinda racist. What if I wasn't Chinese? Mink felt offended but we committed to dining there so we did. He asked if we wanted to dine inside or outside. Since it was chilly for Mink, we opted to dine inside where it was 90% full due to a Chinese tour group. They all had the same dish so we figured preset menu for them. I wasn't sure what I was going to get but since they all ate the Ossobuco con risotto alla Milanese in Crosta, I decided to order that as it was one of the dishes I was considering. Mink ordered their Spaghetti ai frutti di mare. I'm not sure why but the owner exclusively took care of us. He also made it a point to bring a photo over of Jay Chow saying he's dined there 4-5 times in the last few years. Maybe that's why the Chinese tour group eats there? He was arrogant enough to brag about how much money he's made because of Jay Chow. There were lots of celebrities that dined there from what gathered looking at his wall of fame. I bet he didn't charge any of them in USD *smh* The Ossobuco con risotto alla Milanese in Crosta was really good and probably the best we had in Milan. They must be able to make this dish with their eyes closed at this point with the daily Chinese tour groups dining there. Their Spaghetti ai frutti di mare was decent but didn't have as much seafood in the dish as other restaurants and the flavor was about average. The bread and EVOO offered was legit though! I loved it and I normally hardly ever eat the complimentary bread. Food is good overall and customer service felt extra. If we didn't get charged USD, wasn't getting bragged to about how much money he made off Jay Chow and wasn't greeted with a "Ni Hao" then the place is 4 stars. Since all that did happened, 2.5 stars.

Reservations are highly recommended. It's within walking distance of the Duomo di Milano. Just as much as the Duomo is a must visit in Milan, so is this quaint restaurant. When you arrive, you will need to knock at the door. It's a tiny place with only seating for 20 in the entire place. Chef Maurizio sat at our table and shared pictures on his phone of all of the dishes. He made a few recommendations and they were much appreciated. The dishes are served family style - to be shared. Everything he served was amazing. I would not have changed a thing. The restaurant was founded by his father in 1952. And, he is carrying on an amazing tradition. His father would be proud.
