I went to La Cocina for lunch because what they make, the presentation and the flavor is unreal. Plus, the owner Andres and his girlfriend and always there and outstanding business owners. They are so friendly and I love the way they are as restaurant owners, which is how it should be. I been to Mexico over eighty times plus in Mexico City over twenty and in Mexico City they serve some of the best food I have ever eating. I am 100 percent German and we love pork! I saw this their Pork Delight - Succulent chunks of slow simmered pork in our red achiote spice w/ green tomatillo sauce. It was something my father Chef Werner would make, a little different with species but it looks the same. I loved it. The flavor, the spice, how tender the pork was. It brought back memories of my father's making this just a little different. Any pork lovers out there get it but ask for more of that gravy over it! read more

Wow!!! I haven't eaten here since I was a kid and it was in a different location. My mother (who has since passed) and I used to go to La Cocina when it was in Rosenberg and I'm so glad I mustered up the courage to return.. 12 years later! The service is outstanding! Sylvia is so kind and attentive! Our food was very flavorful! The green sauce has always been my favorite and I almost cried when I ate it again! Definitely a core memory for me! The consistency of this establishment after all these years is incredible. The margarita was wonderful! And for 7.99 you can't beat it! Definitely hit the spot! I love that they have an outdoor patio (once it's not a billion degrees outside) and also local businesses displayed on the tables. This establishment really understands the word of community! Today I ordered a kids' meal for my daughter, which included a cheese quesadilla with rice and beans. According to the menu, the kids' meal is supposed to come with a soft drink--but when I went to pick up my order, the server acted like I was out of line for asking about it. Apparently, drinks are only included for dine-in orders, but that isn't stated anywhere on the menu. The fact that they're charging almost $10 for the meal without providing the drink for to-go orders is ridiculous. Honestly, I could have ordered a regular dish for the same price, and now I wish I had. The server refused to give me a drink unless I paid extra, which makes no sense when the cost is the same for dine-in or takeout. Aside from the drink issue, the food quality itself was disappointing. They used cheap American cheese for the quesadilla, not even shredded cheese. It was bland and far from the authentic Mexican flavors I expected, especially coming from a Hispanic background myself. I don't know why this place has such good reviews because it's overpriced and definitely not worth the hype. Living right behind this restaurant, it's frustrating that I'll now have to drive farther to find good, authentic food. Unfortunately, this place missed the mark on both food quality and service. To make matters worse, the owner was right at the front when I walked in and didn't even acknowledge me. I may not have looked my best that day, but that shouldn't have influenced how I was treated. I have been enjoying the consistent Mexican flavor of La Cocina for over 2 years now and visit no other Mexican restaurant because of my loyalty to the restaurant. First let me start with the fact that I have tried every dish on the menu and each one has never failed my taste buds. My favorite is definitely the "La Sirena", this succulent dish is always prepared with a generous amount of mushrooms, shrimp and mixed cheeses, topped over a wonderfully cooked tender chicken breast with a sauce that will have you sopping every remaining bit of the sauce in every bite. The Fajitas at La Cocina are nothing to scoff at, whether you have Chicken, Beef, Shrimp or a combination you will find yourself requesting additional tortillas or a plate to go to savor the tender, and well prepared delight later. Service at La Cocina is very consistent by a very knowledgeable, friendly and attentive server to accommodate your every dining need. There is always something interesting going on @ La Cocina whether it is a live band playing music, a Fundraiser which many of fort bend natives love to host at La Cocina or simply just a game/news on the TV to enjoy. Mr. Andres (owner) always stops by to say hello and check on things when he sees my family and I. It is always very well decorated with many experiences Andres has had with guest or the wonderful artwork of Mexican culture surrounding the whole restaurant. Really solid TexMex and the service is good. This is a Katy staple and it never disappoints. The young folks will say it's not cuisine, but anyone that knows anything about Mexican. Food knows it was never meant to be cuisine it's good honest food an affordable price. Plates are normally overflowing with refried beans and rice and huge amounts of cheese and fresh vegetables. The meat is always seasoned perfectly. You will always need to add salt and pepper, perfect means it will never be over salted or over peppered. Drinks are always really good and fresh. I am giving this two stars because the food is decent, the problem has been that Andres and company nickel and dime every single thing on the menu. After going ritualistically every Monday for over a year, we will be going elsewhere after our lunch today. $1.87 tacos are a great sell. My wife and I ordered 5 total, $9.35. Two lunch drinks, $3.98. A regular queso is $9.99. After taxes this is a little over $25.00. Our lunch ticket ended up being over $56 today because we asked for shredded cheese on the tacos, $6.25 total ($1.25 a taco when a side of cheese by itself is $3.99). $6.50 for two sides of beans. $5.00 for two sides of rice. Followed by $3.25 for a thing of sour cream. $23 dollars worth of condiments/sides on what was a $25 lunch. The sides we ordered cannot be the same price as fajita tacos, special or not. Second, I went in a few weeks back and ordered the $6.99 Thursday special, two enchilada plate with rice and beans. My daughter ordered a kids enchilada plate (one enchilada). Her plate was $8.50. Do the math for me on that. How is my two enchilada plate on the special cheaper than her one enchilada plate? And how do you not have a price adjustment for Thursdays for this reason? We can't in good faith and conscience spend our money here any further, and if you want your money to stretch, don't go here. If you do go here, don't get a single thing extra. read more

Awful customer service. Before placing my order a very rude man with a thick accent and no patience hung up on me. I was asking him about his location for I have never visited his restaurant. I called and asked why. A you g lady had me speak with the very very rude and angry man with a thick accent. He belittled my son and me. I was furious I was insulted with the customer service. This has become one of our regular places to eat family dinners. We always start with queso con carne the large is enough for 5 people to share and they have a smaller size available. We always get the fajitas for 2 and they are so full of flavor and the tortillas are authentic and hot and fresh what more do you need?! Oh wait, let me not forget the absolutely fabulous perk on kids menu they offer American dishes, despite my kids being part Mexican-they cannot live without grilled chicken and Spanish rice but they LOVE these nuggets and French fries!!! My family calls this place cheap Mexican. I'm talking about the prices compared to other Mexican restaurants in the area, not the people nor the quality of food. We go here regularly. It is not fancy. There isn't a mariachi band because the place isn't large enough to have one. But we do always enjoy it. It is a known product and we have never had a bad meal. Only drawback, they serve Pepsi, not Coke. Since I drink water in the evening it is not a problem, but I'd go elsewhere at lunch. read more

This was my 2nd visit to La Cocina. The first was a late lunch/early dinner, and I don't remember what I ordered. I do remember it being "meh," but not bad enough for me to never return. This time was lunch, and I went with Shrimp al Ajillo. I am used to this dish bursting with garlic flavor, and having more sauce with it. The shrimp were plump and fresh on a bed of grilled onions. It all had the taste of light seasoning, none of which included garlic though. There may have been a pinch of garlic, but an authentic version of this dish would have some visible minced garlic, a scent of pungently sweet garlic, and definitely a robust taste of garlic. It was overall good enough to eat, but did not do its name justice. Overall, La Cocina has the potential to be a great authentic Mexican restaurant in a sea of cookie cutter Tex-Mex joints. They have menu items that let you know their chef knows how to cook real Mexican food. But either he/she never really learned to cook the dishes "asi como mi mama" or he/she is afraid to let loose with full Mexican flavor because of clientele expectations. read more

I've been going here for close to ten years. In that time I can say that the food has been constant and fabulous every single time I've been. The staff is and has always been very friendly and the owner is personable, he makes regular appearances and talks to patrons. I've brought friends and family here many times and every time I have they have thoroughly enjoyed it. The décor, ambience, and feeling of the environment is not to go unmentioned either, the venue is decorated pleasantly and tastefully. This was my first visit to La Cocina. It was a Sunday morning around 8:45 a.m. I called in an order for 9 breakfast tacos and was told it would be 15 minutes before they would be ready. On the dot! 15 minutes and they were handing me my order! The food: the tacos were good but not great with the exception of the Carne Guisada, it was very good. Cooked with mild spices, bits of carrot and potatoes, smooth gravy. This will be what I get the next time I go. The flour tortillas were hand made but just a little too much lard for my liking. Again it was a superlative dining experience at La Cocina. I saw an award for this restaurant for 30 years of service. A Mexican restaurant in Rosenberg for 30 years you know must be not only reliable but a fair price and good service in order to sustain for that period of time.
