I was sad that this restaurant was rated so low. I don't come out on this side of town often but I do at least once a year and when I do, I always make a stop here because I love their cheese enchiladas, chips and salsa and Asado. The Asado is unique to find in the Houston area. I have an aunt who makes it, homemade, in West Texas. I brought her here and she approved so that is how I know it's good Asado. The restaurant is always busy but they are on top of it. They have enough staff always and lots of room for seating. Their decor is colorful so you definitely feel like you're at a Mexican restaurant, but I highly recommend it regardless! This time we tried something new at the table, which was the fried fish and it was delicious. For some reason, I didn't snag a picture of my dad's tostada with beef fajita, but I did taste the meat and it was very good as I am picky about the beef fajitas that restaurants serve. Also, if you like Texas sweet tea, they got good sweet tea here. If you want a drink, you'll definitely see a lot of margaritas flowing around and the Michelada's are actually pretty good as well. read more

The service wasn't bad, so I won't say anything about the waitstaff. The 1 star review is for the food entirely. The salsa was watery and mediocre, nothing to write home about. The queso was straight up melted yellow cheese served with a white plastic spoon. The most upsetting part was the margaritas. We ordered two margaritas on the rocks, and they tased like utter pre-mixed trash can water with lower-than-bottom-shelf tequila. This would normally have been fine if they were reasonably priced, but these margaritas were almost $15! (And there's only one size margarita to order) My lackluster enchilada dinner cost less than a single alcoholic drink. The rice was bland. They have limited options for sides, such as only two types of beans. (No black beans) There may be a few specialty dishes worth getting here, which we didn't have the chance to try. But if you're looking to come here for one of your regular Tex-mex choices, prepare to be underwhelmed and overcharged. read more

Living in Texas - I have tons of really amazing Mexican restaurants at my disposal. So perhaps I expected more from this restaurant. But, this might be the worst Mexican food I've ever had. Even the presentation was awful. And the rice tasted like it was instant rice. I can make better Mexican food in my kitchen (and I'm a white girl from the Midwest). That's how bad it was! We used to eat at La Casona at least twice a week for many years before they moved locations. I don't think the food is as good as it used to be so not giving it more than 3 stars. BUT their chicken soup which they used to serve complimentary with fajitas years ago, is what my family considers medicinal. We always get several orders to go when anyone is feeling under the weather. I even get orders to go when friends are sick. Something about it makes ya feel better. It's nothing really special. I imagine they're just tossing in the dark meat from the chicken after using the white for fajitas and other things. It has potatoes, carrots, chayote squash, onions, tomato, and a slightly spicy broth. They serve it with rice, chips, and salsa. So good! read more

Food is pretty run-of-the-mill, not bad but nothing to write home about. The homemade salsa is good - better than average. I'd give it 4 stars except - Margarita I had was awful. Quality of food and service has definitely worsened and gone downhill since my last visit. Fajitas were dry and had no flavor. Beef enchiladas were greasy and also had no flavor. Beans and rice again also had no flavor. Even the chips and salsa seemed very lackluster. Better to just cook at home or go somewhere else for Tex-mex. The servers are generally great and not an issue, however they can forget you when you need more tea or salsa. The food is not bad, it's just bland. Some basic Mexican food recipe skills would kick this up another level. Garlic, chicken stock , cilantro , oregano, chili powder don't cost much at all and could really help the rice and beans for instance, same for more taco seasoning. La Casona is one of our favorite go to Mexican food spots. To me this is more authentic tasting and not Tex mex! You HAVE to get their jumbo mangonada margarita. Oh my! The flavor is unmatched and it is super strong. Comes with a tajin sucker and a chamoy straw. Sooo good!! They have the best selection of fish entrees and the entire menu is actually huge. All the employees are super friendly and usually remember you if you come often. You get one FREE small queso every time you come and if you want more you can purchase it. I mean if that doesn't scream perfect place, I don't know what does! Ha! Quesadillas are amazing and the seafood enchiladas comes with the best sauce on top. Large restaurant in strip center. Sometimes you might get lucky and have a mariachi band, but usually not. The drinks are good and it usually is eAsy to get seated and service is descent. Food quality is pretty low considering the price. It seems very overcooked, not fresh. Seems like they must just have an assembly line in the back constructing an assembly of meat, tortillas, cheese and sauce into a shape of the Mexican food. We've eaten there several times but I believe the last time really was our last. I recommend you try heading to another Mexican place like Lopez or Gringos just a little up the road. read more
