Best Mexican spot in this area, hands down.
The food is very good, but I am overjoyed by the mole. It's not too dry or chalky tasting, and it has the right kind of sweetness and rounded spice(not meaning spicy)profile. It goes great with the enchiladas(the enchiladas de cameron is my favourite with it)and highly recommend picking that option instead of the green or red sauce. But of course that is if you're a fan of mole(which more people should be!).
Tamales are another item I highly enjoyed. The masa was tender, light, and flavourful, but also packed with meat making it nice and hearty without weighing you down.
I tried some of the chile verde my partner ordered, and from just a sample, it was very good just like all the other things I have stated. The meat was very tender, and the sauce it was cooked in was light and bright, again making it a meal that doesn't anchor you to the ground, but also satisfies the palate and stomach.
The tortillas are just beautiful and made just the way they should be - fresh. They have body and thickness to them that helps carry anything you're eating with it.
The sides of rice and beans, just like the tortillas, compliment the dishes instead of overbearing whatever it is your eating, and does exactly what it's supposed to do - be a side. They're flavourful enough, but I wouldn't completely count a worth of a dish with just those two. The rice is fluffy from being cooked perfectly, and the beans are seasoned well, but also taste like beans(if that makes sense).
Adding their hot sauces to anything you order gives a good kick/layer to your dish.
Overall, everything was just top notch and has many nuances that made everything that much more enjoyable.
*in defence of Mexican food here in the states*
Mexico has a very wide range of regions, and each area, of course, has its own style of cooking things. I mention this because not all Mexican food tastes the same in that sense, and I highly encourage anyone who comes through sleepy Morro Bay to eat here and try not to label things as "authentic" or not because everyone has their own definition from their own memories and going strictly on that narrows enjoyment(I mean I've seen people review Mexican spots and give it bad reviews all whilst ordering only a cheese and bean burrito?). The world is big, and every view on taste is different, but also it's much more fun to experience someone else's perspective. My personal view on this food is that its excellent and it deserves more credit. read more
