Super crowded but worth the wait. Food was amazing and the ambiance is casual, not good for groups though unless you sit outside
We have loved past visits, but this one was tough. Service was super slow and took a really long time to both take our order and prepare it. We felt like the food wasn't as fresh as usual and our friends visiting for the first time were also disappointed. The lengua taco is still the tastiest and the agua Frescas are still very good. They put more tables in over time and it's less grocery store and more restaurant. Not sure that's for the better. We won't rush back, but I hope they were just having an off night.
We came to La Chaparrita Taqueria and it felt different right away. It's inside a grocery store, which is kinda cool. The moment you walk in, you smell the food and that alone pulls you in. There's stuff hanging everywhere and I swear every time I looked around I noticed something new. The staff was nice and straight to the point, which I appreciated. I ordered four tacos, two asada and two cabeza. The asada had great flavor. Smoky from the grill, juicy, and really well seasoned. Once you added the salsa, it hit just right. Every bite was spicy, a little tangy, and super satisfying. But the cabeza tacos were the clear winners though. Very tender, really juicy, rich but not heavy at all. Easily my favorite. I wish I had ordered all four tacos de cabeza. Also... If I had to say one thing, it's that the tacos are on the smaller side for the price. They taste great, no doubt, but the size doesn't quite match what you're paying. Still, if you're there for flavor and not counting dollars too hard, it's worth trying.
I was scrolling through Instagram when I came across a video ranking the best tacos in Chicago. One name kept coming up: La Chaparrita Taqueria. Not only was it being called one of the best taco spots in Chicago, but one of the best in the country. I had to see for myself. Luckily, I had the next day off, so I told myself, "I'm going." I woke up the next morning and the first thing I did was get ready to make the drive. I live in the suburbs, and with traffic it took me about 90 minutes to get there, so my expectations were definitely high. I walked in and, just like the video showed, it's also a grocery store. The place was clean, there were plenty of tables, and the service was quick. Since tacos are what they're known for, I kept it simple and ordered the meats I usually judge every taco spot by: asada, cecina, and al pastor. For some context, I've had some really good tacos. I've eaten them in different states, and my own family knows how to make great tacos. So I wasn't coming in easy to impress. The first taco I tried was the asada, and it immediately stood out. It was incredibly juicy. A lot of places miss the mark because the steak ends up dry. You can cover it with seasoning, but dry is still dry. That wasn't the case here. I ordered two, but after the first bite I wished I had gotten three. Next was the cecina, which is usually my favorite. It didn't disappoint either. This is exactly what cecina should taste like and then some. Last was the al pastor, and this one completely surprised me. Al pastor is usually somewhere in my top five, but here it was easily my favorite. Every bite was packed with flavor, and honestly, it's hard to put into words just how good it was. Now I understand why this place gets so much hype. It's well deserved. I'll definitely be back, and next time I'm bringing the family, especially some of my picky cousins. If this place can win them over, it'll be tough to argue there's a better taco spot around... at least until I find one that can top it.
I love tacos and have eaten then everywhere I have traveled in the U.S. from California to New York. These may be the best I have eaten in the a United States. Yes they are that good. Also, Do yourself a favor and get an order or two of the tacos de canasta (papa y chorizo) Soo good. Everything was amazing and the service was top notch too. Just go, you won't be disappointed!! 5 stars, easy!!!!!
This is my favorite authentic Mexico City style place to get tacos from. The flavor is all the way there every time I've eaten here. I got the steak hurache, tripe tacos, and a Lengua taco. The tripe tacos you can get it crispy or regular. I like them both ways. They are delicious. The steak Hurache is the perfect portion size. I always order two because I want to eat one when I get home. It's delicious. The service is very prompt. I do recommend you try to speak Spanish with them just to have more clarity within the conversation of what you are ordering. The ambience is beautiful. It feels like you're in a Taqueria in Mexico. The food comes out fresh every single time. I did order a mango juice and a sour soft juice. Both were pretty decent. They do have a parking lot in the back. I always get lucky and find a spot. Other than that there is street parking but it is residential so be careful when you try to park.
my boyfriend and i heard about this place on tik tok and had to try it out. these were some of the best tacos the both of us have ever had. the carne asada was delicious. the lingua was tender. our server was nice and helpful while ordering. well worth the drive down here. such a cute authentic mexican / taco spot!

When we walked in, we were asked whether we are dining in or doing a carry-out; we decided to eat at the restaurant, and were seated promptly. We ordered: +a couple of Asada tacos +a couple of Pastor tacos +an order of Cebollitas Asadas +an Horchata +a Limon Agua Fresca The tacos were just okay, and even adding the hot sauces that were on the table didn't help much; the tortillas were more on the dry and stiff, kind of giving you dry mouth. The drinks were okay, but a little too thin and watered down. They forgot our order of the cebollitas asadas, but after a couple of reminders, it came once we had finished the rest, so there really wasn't much point to this dish. Staff were friendly, and the place does get packed. Street parking can be found in the area. +double-check your orders +dried-out tacos +friendly service +street parking available

Couldn't go inside because I had my dog but the d service was amazing with me but we ate outside and the experience was great regardless!! Can't wait to go back!!! Ambiance: 5/5 The restaurant has a little grocery store inside where you can get anything from Mexican candies to candles. There are a few colorful tables so bring everyone! Service: 5/5 Everyone was so nice and helpful. There is a slight language barrier but just be patient and everything will get sorted out. Food: 5/5 OMG!!! These might have been the best tacos we've had in Chicago!! Highly recommend getting the asada and tripa tacos!! We loved how they cut the asada and it was so smokey and delicious. The tripa tacos had a nice crunch and was so flavorful. There were also three sauces to drench your tacos in and they all tasted so good! Definitely have to come here!

One of the most authentic taco experiences you will have in Chicago. The store is small and tables are limited but you need to try this taqueria! Amazing tacos @lachaparritagrocery They have a huge menu with lots of different options. They tacos are on the smaller size, like 3 good bites. This allows you to try more!! We didn't have a bad taco. My favorites were the sweet breads, head, and the tongue. Each one had a unique flavor and cooked perfectly. Also please get a frozen lime margarita. Blended when ordered and it is the old school classic. read more
Everything you've heard about La Chaparrita? It's true. Really outstanding tacos, especially the suadero and fried tripe. It will be hard to order anything besides the suadero in future but there's too much more to try. The tacos are Mexico City-style and small by Anglo standards but it just means you get to try more. Three was a good amount for me but YMMV. Speaking of trying, I haven't seen a molleja taco (sweetbreads) in ages and this one didn't disappoint. The aguas frescas are also excellent. Fresh, fruity, and not sugar laden. Service is fine and the ambiance is minimalist and there's good street parking nearby. Next time, tepache and nopales. read more

I saw this place on Youtube, and it looked amazing so we dropped by when we were in Chicago. We got street parking nearby and headed into the market. We were seated at a table pretty quickly and the waitress took our drink order. I ordered a small Tepache. The small is actually a good size, and I feel like anything bigger would have been too much. The flavor of the Tepache was bright and delicious. I've definitely not had anything like it before, but I will order it when I see it again. We ordered 6 of the Tacos de Canasta (two of each flavor). The chorizo and potato one had a nice spiciness from the homemade chorizo. The chicharron one was good also, but my favorite was the refried beans taco. I could see how you could order 12 of these and inhale them. They are small enough to eat as an appetizer, but if you order enough they could definitely make a meal. I ordered a suadero, asada, pastor, and campechano taco. All of the tacos were very good, and my favorite was the campechano because of the differing textures of the meat. The grilled onions on the side were also really good. If you're in the area and craving tacos, definitely stop here. The tacos were really good and the Tepache is delicious as well. read more

La Chaparrita Grocery is nestled inside a Mexican grocery store, and the flavors of everything were amazing! What we ordered: Tongue, pastor, and asada tacos: the tacos were smaller than usual, but they were all packed with flavors. My fav was the asada Tacos de canasta: these were surprisingly good! I liked the one with the chorizo filling the most Oatmeal licuados: SO yummy and creamy. this drink complement our meal very well Carne asada huarches: interesting. the huarache was crispy and chewy huarache and the carne asada was flavorful carne asada. Great for sharing! Overall, we loved their authenticity and ambiance. It's a must-visit and I definitely recommend! read more

Probably some of my favourite tacos in Chicago. It's connected to a small grocery store in Little Village, but it's also a sit-down restaurant. Street parking can be difficult. The tacos are small for the price. This is kind of expensive compared to other taco shops, but my love for the tacos is enough to turn a blind eye most of the time! In my most recent visit, I got the tripa, suadero, cabeza, and al pastor tacos. I shared a 16 oz mango agua fresca with 2 other people. I think they do a particularly great job in getting the tripas crispy and the head meat soft. The lengua taco is unusual with the meat being one whole slice, but I don't mind. It's not a problem if the meat is tender enough.The salsas are also tasty. Surprisingly, the habanero one isn't as spicy as you think it would be. Get the side of grilled onions and jalapenos if you're eating with a few people. It makes the tacos even better. It can take a while for the food to come out since there aren't many people working, but it's usually not an unreasonable amount of time. There's plenty of competition in this area, but personally this is my go-to spot. read more
Miniscule tasty bites! I discovered I love radishes for palate cleansers and this grocery store does not skimp on Limes or radishes which I always appreciate. Tacos are a little on the smaller side so order more than you normally would. Asada is cut thinner and leaner. There is some disorganization as to where to pay and who takes your order. I think its whomever is available but I could be mistaken. Service was cordial but never dismissive. Overall a nice little taqueria if you happen to be in the neighborhood. read more

This is an authentic feeling, hole in the wall spot with a small grocery store attached. They make great steak tacos with lots of flavor! The reason that I'm subtracting a star is that they are quite pricey for the small size. I would say you need to order at least 4/5+ of these tacos to feel full. Pro tip the Chile toreados go great with the steak tacos. You can take a bite of the taco and then take a bit of the Chile, and it adds a great spicy kick to the flavor profile. There is free parallel street parking on multiple streets nearby! read more
Come here if you want good street tacos! It's inside of a grocery store, and there's free street parking. They don't have flour tortillas; however, I found the corn tortillas quite tasty and that's usually not my preference. I got the mango Aqua Fresca. It's was yummy and refreshing. My boyfriend got the horchata, which was very fresh. Each taco is $3-4 each and pretty pricy for how small it is. But the flavor makes up for it. The al pastor is my ultimate favorite. The carne one was chewy and overly priced. I wouldn't order that one again. The sauces were amazing. They range from a mild, hot, and super hot. read more

Transport yourself to the vibrant streets of Mexico City, and enjoy truly traditional and authentic cuisine at this local Taqueria. situated in a grocery store, this hole in the wall establishment serves up fresh tacos and huarcaches in the heart of Little Village. Be prepared to be patient for your food, however, it's so worth the wait as the chef behind the counter, will meticulously cook your meat, and create your taco with so much love. As a Latino and someone who truly loves to cook I can be hard to please; you must take the trip over. Avoid the weekends as it will be packed and note that they are closed on Thursdays. Walking around inside this small store, I think it's closer to a taco shop than a grocery store. When you walk inside, you look around and can feel the cultural authenticity. I got Asada / Pastor / Campechano - combo Suadero (boneless chuck) and Longaniza (pork sausage) and Tepache - fermented pineapple water. The meat is all so flavorful and juicy. The Campechano - combo Suadero (boneless chuck) and Longaniza (pork sausage) was delightfully crispy. I was scared to try the tripe, a strong recommendation by the nice lady, but it was all so good that I want to return and try the tripe taco, maybe even the brain taco! I tried the fermented pineapple water which was new and interesting. Customer service was very good. Staff lady was very nice and specific with recommendations. read more
