This chain of restaurants has been around for quite a while and I have probably visited all of their locations lol. This one in particular I've come to more times than I can count because I live in this area. Food is definitely hit or miss, so is the service. I don't like returning things but I've had to return dishes here. The place still has potential, as it's spacious, but it's very outdated. I found the food to be mediocre, including a somewhat hard rice. La Carreta has been a hit or miss for me, usually don't go but went with a friend. He had a greassy issue, I had the rice issue and together we had sort of a service issue as the waitress was nice and brougt the food out quickly but then after that it just sort of went down a spiral. Latin restaurants are infamous for this for some reason or other. Expect average to slightly above depending on time, day, and staff. Plenty of parking. It's the usual Cuban fare. Not for vegetarians even though there are 1-2 possible plates. Make sure you speak or can understand some Spanish as it will be the dominant language. A friend recommended this place so I figured it was worth a try despite mixed reviews. I was hungry, it was lunchtime, perfect time for a simple meal. Ordered delivery of Pechuga Pollo Plancha with vegetables and salad. Looked so much better than it tasted. The chicken was well seasoned but dry. By dry, i mean like leather. Too bad because the flavor was so darn good that just had the potential to be an outstanding meal. The salad on the other hand was extremely fresh and a nice blend. After my Frita, I wanted to get some Cuban coffee and a pastry before I left. I stopped here and saw a bunch of people chilling outside drinking their coffee and enjoying some pastries. I walked up to the outside window and ordered a Cortadito and a Guava pastry. Total was less than 3 bucks. Cortadito- Just what the doctor ordered! Super tasty. Hot, sweet, went down well. They serve this to you in a small cup meant to be sipped and not chugged. It was damn good! Guava Pastry- Think a croissant stuffed with some sweet guava filling. The pastry was so flaky and soft and tender. I could have had about 10 of these things. The guava filling wasn't too sweet and overpowering, which was nice. It was a great pastry! I have never ever been so insulted than this afternoon when we went for a late lunch at the Carter's on Kendall Drive. My server was wonderful and very courteous but the afternoon manager Ms ANAI OBEDA was very very insulting and has no respect for a customer (I am a doctor and I am 74 yrs old). Initially it started when she corrected me for asking her a pen ( in Spanish I asked for a PLUMA) She had the audacity to correct me and said: the proper word is BOLIGRAFO. I said "Well I am Cuban and Cubans say PLUMA. And La Carreta is after all one of the oldest Cuban restaurants in Miami". She laughed and sneared at me. On the way out I said to her ... you not only insulted me in front of your staff but corrected me twice. She just threw her head back and laughed at me. I am 74 years old and as a retired Hematologist MD I told her she was no one to correct a paying customer especially a woman who is 74 and has been in this country since 1961 having come as a Peter Pan child alone at age 9 in my parents search for freedom She laughed and made fun of me in front of the staff. Who makes fun of a well dressed 74 year old doctor and her husband of 53 yrs. But she didn't stop there ... she started saying to me GOODBYE, Merry Christmas, Happy New Year's and would not let me speak. Her face just a big smirk and in and in she went every time I tried to speak she'd shout out ... HAPPY EASTER, Happy New Year, Merry Christmas. All the time making fun of me. I told her I could tell she was not Cuban because Cubans don't treat their customers with sarcasm and making fun of a well dressed elderly couple. I asked her name. She would not give it. I called later and obtained the information La Carter's is part of who us Cubans are ... it is our refuge of food and enjoyment of our culture to have this GOD awful woman not just insult us but make fun of two senior citizens in front of her staff (there were three other girls there). My waitress apologized on her halves she kept screaming ,,, happy new year. Merry Christmas Happy Easter Needles to say I will not return to my favorite restaurant at that location as I an a Professional and I refuse to pay to eat at a restaurant that insults the elderly. I've been going to this Carreta for over 30 years and it has always been on point with their food and service. Not so much lately. The last few times we brushed it off as a bad "cook" day but tonight was just unacceptable. The bread was stale and greasy. I ordered a croqueta sandwich and it was absolutely the worse croqueta sandwich I have ever had. Bread was stale, packed with ham, zero seasonings and COLD. They did not even bother to heat the sandwich, the special rice with pork was salty and just off. I'm very surprised because this place has always been amazing. Staff has been very lackadaisical as well, just not like the friendly place it used to be. Not going back for a while .... Hopefully it improves but in the meantime the one on 40th St is amazing. Amazing service and very yummy Cuban food! We started with the yuca croquettes and they were DELICIOUS, soft yet had a great crunch. And the aioli they serve with it was very good. I got the croquette sandwich as recommended by our wonderful waiter - let me just say the portions here are HUGE and the prices are amazing. I only ate half my sandwich and it kept me full for the rest of the day! High quality ham, perfectly melted Swiss cheese and the flavor from the croquettes - perfect sandwich.
