Every time we go to La Campagna I am in love. It has always been a wonderful experience. I'm crazy about their food! But last night was different...? Same place, same ambiance, same lady taking care of the entire room by herself. Same aunt and uncle chef team in the kitchen... I thought. The chalkboard menu was still there with a marvelous selection. I was really in my element. I ordered the "Zucchini blossoms" for my appetizer... FAB-U-LOUS!!! I had a salad with the most unusual dressing I've ever encountered. It was "Orange Hazelnut"... Fantastic. I bought some to take home. Then I had the "Linguine with Clams" for my entree... Excellent. I followed it with coffee and "Peach Panna Cotta"... Very good. Here is where it got different. My wife thought her shrimp was overcooked... What! Then my brother's steak was so well done he couldn't eat it. For the first time ever he actually sent it back... Shock! The replacement steak was perfect, thank goodness. I couldn't believe my eyes or ears. I never anticipated anything but perfection to come out of that kitchen. Well it turns out, of the aunt and uncle chef team, the uncle was missing last night. A new young man was helping out. He clearly needs a lot more training before they do that again. That's a fast way to ruin a reputation. All is forgiven. We went here for a work event. It looks like you have to have reservations, but I am not 100%. It was a very small restaurant that looked like a family dinning room. The staff was so nice. Appetizers were ordered for us due to it being a work event. The cuban eggrolls and beef wellington were very good. I ordered the eggplant, which was huge. I also got the tiramisu for dessert. As a descendant of the Puglia region from where the chef is from I was excited to taste the foods of my youth from grandma's house in North Hill Akron. Quaint authentic Italian restaurant with excellent pasta and sauces. Impressive menu for such a small family operation. Extensive wines available at retail (bottles only) is wonderful choice. Paid less for a bottle of rose than a glass and a half pour at a chain restaurant. They have 2 ounce pour tasters available too. Burrata appetizer was delicious with fresh tomatoes in July and fresh basil. Partner had the sauce tricolor tortellini which was very good - sauce was a bit runny but tasty. I had the gnocchi with fresh tomatoes and spicy sausage also very tasty. Gnocchi are not pillows - more firm. Service was professional. I think there are three people running g the joint. The chef. The server. The bus boy. Impressive. Will be back. Cozy atmosphere as you dine in the store. No walk ins reservations only as they have to plan their evening service out accordingly. It's a place we go to for special occasions mostly because it's a special place. We couldn't eat here regularly as the prices are a bit steep but after sampling the cuisine, it is well worth it. The best kept secret in Westlake! The owners are the best! Everything on the menu is hand selected each day based on what the fresh market had that day. Once they're out, they're out! This place is quirky. One hostess/server for the whole place; she was dressed in a t-shirt and rather grumpy throughout - slow to greet us. Food was ok - the antipasto had lots of cheese, more than our group of four could finish - and the meats and olives were nice. The appetizer salad was nothing more than I would throw in a hastily assembled lunch: one chopped Roma and lettuce. Spaghetti and clams were meh; I was expecting fresh pasta for the $30 price but it was clearly from a box. The rest of my party enjoyed their beef medallions and pasta with sausage and onions. The decor is weird - like uncomfortable chairs from a church basement and painted slatted wall panels as if the location used to be retail. Water spots on the drop ceiling. Bathroom was disgusting and surely against health code -- it was in the same room where two cooks were preparing the food and filthy! Like dirty floored and decor from the 50s. There was a shower in there filled with crap. Overall, would not recommend. Go to Luca West nearby instead; lovely service and food at similar prices. read more

TLDR: Service: good. Food: ok. Wine: good. Atmosphere: bad. My wife and I dined here a couple of weeks ago. It was our first big dinner out in a year or so. When you walk in, the decor kind of reminds you of the backroom of a World Market store. There are random baskets stacked all over and a big table in the center holding randomly stacked seltzer waters. They currently only allow four tables to be occupied at a time. We felt that they were being COVID safe from a distancing perspective. However, the menu is written on a single chalkboard that is passed from table to table all night. After each table is done looking at it, the server has to wipe the sides down with disinfectant. There is no way that thing is actually getting clean. Especially since the center part remains untouched. The wine selection is definitely a highlight for us. Everything is sold at retail prices (i.e. no restaurant markup). We got a fantastic bottle of wine that normally costs $75 for $52. Their license is a "tasting" license which means they can't pour more than 2oz at a time. This wasn't an issue for us. They do offer cocktails and we enjoyed a couple to start off our meal. For appetizer we had the burrata with pistachio cream. The pistachio cream was like super sweet pistachio icing and kind of gross. You could maybe serve this as a desert but definitely not an appetizer. If served as a desert, the cream should be better proportioned to the cheese Main we had the "famous" eggplant parm. We were excited to try this since we are ardent fans of America's Test Kitchen. The dish was a huge let down. The dish lacked texture. The marinara was ok. Personally, we prefer eggplant parm breaded in panko so that it has a little bit of a crunch to it. This was basically a pile of eggplant sog. A major point of concern is the price point of this dish. I can't remember exactly how much it was but i think it was close to $25!? We also had the branzino. The fish was cooked OK but it wasn't anything too spectacular. The highlight for us was the side of rapini which was tender and garlicky. I have had better branzino at Aetna in Little Italy. Another big miss was that they didn't have any chocolate on the desert menu. Seriously. WTF. No tiramisu either. We decided not to have desert. As we drove away and passed Luca, I wished we had gone there instead. The food at Luca is so so so much better especially when you consider the amount of money we spent. Bottom line: Try it for yourself. A lot of people seem to like this place. I think there is much better Italian in Cleveland for your money. read more

I love supporting small business owners and the food is amazing. The owners cook everything, handmade is best and the niece is the server and she gives amazing costumer service. My wife had mentioned this place more than a few times and told me we needed to make sure to plan in advance because it's a small location and sells out quickly. So we set up a reservation for our anniversary and arrived slightly early for dinner. The place is unique for sure. Not your normal big chain place which is fine. And different from the "true" Italian places I've eaten at in Italy. The service was fine, the food, not what we expected. And no, we weren't expecting Olive Garden or anything like that. I was expecting more traditional Italian like I've had in Italy. That wasn't it. It was their take on traditional Italian. Odd combinations, lack of flavor with some things, and dishes that were definitely unique. They change the menu frequently so maybe it was just the night we went, so we wouldn't mind trying it again. But since the menu is a surprise when you arrive, you never know what you're going to get. It has a huge following so they must being doing something right. We had guests from Pennsylvania who had seen an article about the place in a food magazine. Carmella (the owner & chef) does all the cooking, and it's great!! Portions are well-sized. The menu could change daily, depending upon what Carmella decides to cook, but there are still many dishes to choose from. There's no sign for the restaurant and it doesn't look like much from the outside. The place is small, and there aren't many staff, but the food and service was outstanding!! Thursday our group of 10 experienced an amazing meal from start to finish. It began with a delicious Italian liqueur and was followed by Tender calamari with a marinara dipping sauce. A light balsamic salad paired with tomato bread, lobster risotto that melted in your mouth, thin and expertly prepared eggplant Parmesan served pie shaped and chicken Florentine that was so good I eat all my spinach! Each course came with its own wine pairing. Carmella the chef knocked it out of the park. Her reluctant family staff let us stay past closing. We were so full and satisfied that we rolled out of the restaurant without even wanting or needing dessert! While watching America's Test Kitchen, it was Bryan's turn to prepare a dish and he mentioned having been to La Campagna and being specifically told to have the Eggplant Parmesan. In all my times watching I have never seen anyone of the chefs so enthused with a dish as Bryan was with La Campagna's Eggplant Parmesan. he raved on and on about it. And he demonstrated how to prepare it. Well that segment prompted me to return to La Campagna, chat with Chef Carmella and of course eat the Eggplant Parmesan. In fact our party of five had a tremendous time. The Eggplant Parmesan lived up to its reputation; unlike other eggplant parmesans, Carmella's stands out by being thin and not breaded, and not swimming in sauce You can actually taste the tender eggplant instead of breading. Yes Bryan's enthusiasm was well founded. Sampling a bit of the other dishes ordered, all of which were excellent, I could tell that Carmella takes her food ingredients and preparation very seriously; she definitely has that touch for making everything tasty. We went with high expectations. Given the small intimate setting we were hoping for handmade pasta, fresh food & apps, etc. instead it was boxed pasta and the subpar shared plates (apps). The cheese board appetizer reminded me of a cheese platter that you would get at a grocery store with small square cuts of cheese that are dried out. The accoutrements were not paired well and they were dry. The calamari and lobster ravioli didn't have that fresh taste that you would expect...had a thawed out taste. The table bread was really dry and they served it with butter...no EVOO. I thought all Italians ate their bread with olive oil,fresh parm, and herbs. HOLY GAWD. I can't believe it took me so long to find this place. I rank this alongside the best Italian restaurants EVER, not only in the Cleveland area. A tad pricey, but who really cares, because like I said, HOLY GAWD. It's that good. Get the burrata. Just get it. Get the eggplant parm if you want to taste eggplant parm the way it's supposed to taste. Even the soup, which comes along with the meal (or a salad, if you wish) was redonk. And it wasn't even a "wow" type of soup -- just mushroom barley. Still amazing. The wine. OH, the wine. They have a funny, interesting, clever story that goes along with their license to serve alcohol. I won't bother explaining it. Bottom line is, they have a tasting license, so you can buy wine and they can offer it to you in servings once you finish your glass. The wine is everywhere; it can't be ignored. JUST BUY THE WINE. AND DRINK THE WINE. I had Amarone for the first time ever...this is my new favorite wine. Everything, from the intimate vibe, to the "oops, are we in the right place?" setting, to the same lady serving everyone who's served everyone since the beginning of time, along with her whole family, talking to you, serving you, and loving on you Italian restaurant style...is perfect. We have gone to La Campagna for years, though we call it "Carmella's," for the chef and co-owner. It is a family-owned, family-run diamond in the rough of the West Side suburbs. The menu changes at least a little bit every day, though many of my favorites (pasta bolognese and eggplant parmigiana) show up with frequency. But every item on the menu has some reason to shine: the pizza crust may be made with fat from a locally raised pork, the cannoli may be filled with local goat cheese, and the tagliatelle are certainly homemade. The wine list is often full of surprises; we usually just go with recommendations from the house. The restaurant probably can only seat 25 (it's inside a gift basket/italian dry goods store), so we always call ahead for big groups. Is it fancy? No. But it is delicious, and a bit like home. Or maybe more like your favorite aunt's house, if you grew up in a big, Italian-American family like mine. read more

La Campagna is a down home awesome italian dining. When you walk in for the first time, you might be a bit confused by the decor. The interior decor is shelves with packages of pasta, sauces, and even wine and all of these are actually for sale. Nestled amongst these are several tables with seating for at most 40 patrons. The decor does strike a nice of balance of your Italian grandparent's extended kitchen/dining space. During my last visit, my two year old & I have discovered our latest favorite spiral pasta named "fusilli col buco" - This is a long version of the spring-shaped fusilli. Reservations are highly recommended as very rarely walk-ins can be seated in a decent amount of wait time. There is no set menu at La Campagna. This truly family owned establishment decide upon their dinner menu each day and typically have soup, salad, and 4 to 5 items on that day's menu. My several visits here have never been disappointing due to the food. Each entre is hand made after your order. I don't think anything short of the pasta sauce and meat balls are pre-made at La Campagna. Therefore once you order be prepared to wait a little. But oh the taste and freshness of the dishes is to die for. Chicken marsala to White fish with capers, finger licking good. Now italian is not my most favorite cuisine, but eating at La Campagna makes me wish it was. If you are craving italian and you can simmer in the craving for a day or so, make a reservation at La Campagna and order multiple entrees and share or even take it home. You will not regret. The price range of all items are very reasonable compared to the taste. Although the tables are white linen, the serving is not that of a high end white linen restaurant however if your expectation is to sit down at a true down home italian then the atmosphere and service quality will be perfect. Horribly overpriced for the quality of the food you recieve. My dinner was $30 for Salmon a la orange that came with three pieces of vegetables and undercooked red skinned potatoes sprinkled with dried parsley. The salmon was average at best. The server, although nice, was slow, inattentive and was not able to answer basic question about the meal beforehand. I am so disappointed. I wanted to support a small, family owned business; but I left feeling like I got cheated out of my money for the illusion of an authentic experience. So sad. read more

Dined here last evening with a couple of friends and I honestly don't know why I haven't been here before. This is a small, quaint restaurant that delivers personalized service and exceptional food. We started with an appetizer that was a combination of soft cheeses with a fig jam on top and came with delicate and delicious crackers to spread the cheese on. What a great start! Two of us had a salad and one had the soup of the day, Paese, a garlic and onion broth with a semi-poached egg and pasta She really enjoyed it. Between the three of us we had the linguine and clams, lemon sole stuffed with crab meat and a ravioli dish that highlighted 3 of their sauces. The dinners were amazing!!!! Farm to Table at its best. Seasonal Veggies and local when available food is excellent and is not only tasty but visually beautiful. This is a place I go regularly and would (and have) recommended to all. I love the perch on Friday's during lent, the feast of Seven Fishes the first and second Friday of December. If you see Halibut Florentine (many times Salmon) just order it you will not be sorry! We all love Eggplant Parmesan is so much we order it as appetizer. You get soup or salad with meal and the prices are in line with just about any good restaurant in the area. Wine selection is great and costs are really reasonable. This place is so delicious. Everything I've had here is absolutely amazing. I'm no stranger to authentic italian food, i do thonk thos is the best you can get without going to italy itself. It's definitely not a place to go if you want a quick in and out, you have to plan to spend some time here. Make sure you call ahead to ensure they are not having a private party. Everyone rants about this place but honestly I think it is over rated. It is very expensive compared to other similar restaurants. I have been there twice and I will not be back. First off, I ordered a glass of wine and I was served a very small portion and asked the server why there was such a small amount and she said they only have a "tasting" license. I wish she would have explained that up front because I paid $6.99 for a taste of wine, The salad was good but very small, small portion of bread. It seemed everything was small but the prices. I don't know where to begin. This is hands down my favorite restaurant ever. My husband and I went on a recommendation and could not even believe it. From the outside it looks like a gift shop but I like that because this restaurant is truly a diamond in the rough. Completely authentic Italian food from imported and local sources.
