The restaurant is colorful, lively, and has a great atmosphere without feeling too formal. We started with the Tuna Wantacos. Our server warned us that they were spicy, and he was right -- definitely a little kick, but very flavorful. The white fish ceviche was bright and refreshing, with that tangy, salty leche de tigre that really wakes up your appetite. The Lomo Saltado was hearty and satisfying, but my favorite dish of the night was the Seafood Arroz Chaufa. It came topped with an omelet and had squid, fried shrimp, and plenty of seafood throughout. Really comforting, savory, and filling -- I would absolutely order this again. We also had chicha morada and a passion fruit drink. I've always liked purple corn drinks, so the chicha morada was an easy favorite. We finished with a chocolate dessert, which was a nice ending after such a big meal. Overall, a very enjoyable Peruvian dinner with fun décor, good flavors, and plenty of variety. I'd definitely come back, especially for the seafood fried rice.

The ceviche was good overall, fresh and enjoyable, but a few bites were noticeably too salty. The corn was a nice touch and added some balance to the dish. Unfortunately, though serviceable, this restaurant was a bit of a letdown. The Ceviche Mixto and Ceviche De Camarones were just average for me. They tasted fresh, but lacked any real flavor. On the other hand, their Anticuchos was quite enjoyable. Maybe they do cooked dishes better. I might come back to try other menu items next time in the area, but currently on the questionable list.

So I went to the O.G. location, where I learned that one spun off to a different owner. I always appreciate O.G. so I'm glad to find that this one is thriving in Passaic. A little off the beaten track, Leña does offer a parking lot if the street is full. Not too crowded inside - well, see my photos - they sat me at a nice large table of my own and brought over that delicious large corn with spicy green sauce. I don't know the names, but this is delicious. The waitress happily walked me through the menu options and, being Ecuadorian, informed me to what was the most traditional here. I went with Tacu Tacu con... technically Pechuga. * Purple drink: Delicious, authentic, large glass, fresh made, fruity and refreshing. Guy at the other table had a whole pitcher and I might have wanted that over just one glass! * Side of fried cassava: Was told that's how Peruvians like it, and that matches my South American recollection. Delicious with that green sauce. * Tacu was on top of a large fried rice patty. Well, not really a patty, it just broke apart into delicious bites bursting with flavor. Wonderful and authentic. * Tacu chicken itself was pounded thin but seasoned so nicely I couldn't put it down. * Large meal accompanied by lettuce and onions. Even those were somehow delicious - okay, more green sauce was used - but my plate exited my possession completely empty. Wish I had room left to try the dessert, the flan or coco version thereof, but too full of delicious Peruvianism. Glad this was on my must try list, glad I chose this location - I'll be back!

They describe it as Peruvian-style Chinese fired-rice mixed with eggs, peppers, and scallions. Now, what's the connection with the Chinese? Well, it turns out there was large immigration from China arriving in Peru at the beginning of 1849 resulting today in the fusion of Chinese and Peruvian flavors termed 'Chifa'. The staff was really nice and process my order with the add-on of Beef but you can have Chicken or both with this rice. My order of Arroz Chaufa was huge, the take-out comes with the egg intact so you need to mix it into the rice. I found the taste of fresh peppers, and the flavors of the rice were different than your typical Chinese rice because of the spices used but the connection is still there to Chinese style rice.
