After a great lazy day of floating around the pool for our last day in Cancun, we almost decided to skip a nice dinner and just grab some (more) tacos from a casual spot nearby. But, after debating and reading some reviews, we decided to call (at 7pm) and see if La Buena Barra had any open tables for 7:30. Since Cancún dinner culture generally ramps up after 8, we were in luck and headed to the restaurant. We were warmly greeted by the host team and escorted promptly to a great table outside, overlooking the lagoon and the last bits of sunset in the sky. The ambience of La Buena Barra is amazing, great lighting, ceiling fans to keep a light breeze going, and music that is loud enough to prevent you from hearing conversations at other tables, but still allowed us to talk just fine. Our servers Jonathan and Estefany were the sweetest and most attentive that we experienced during our trip! Excellent food recommendations, even advising against getting a second dessert (due to their size) instead of just letting us spend more money there. Absolutely worthy of 5 star service! Ok- the food: very good, probably some of the more distinct flavors we enjoyed in Cancun. Also a very unique selection of cocktails, delivered in all sorts of unique glasses. BUT truly the best thing we ate was the corn ice cream! It's molded ice cream that looks exactly like an ear of white corn with a ribbon of dulce de leche in the center- honestly the best ice cream I've ever eaten at a restaurant! Prices per person can easily exceed $1000 pesos here depending on what you get, but it's possible to enjoy the experience on a budget. Overpriced with Great Ambiance and Mid Food. Came here and paid $600 on a weekday night for two orders of lobster tail with a few cocktails. The lobster was terrible because it was overcooked, chewy, and had a char flavor from the grill which I'm assuming had to be open fire. The sashimi was good and all the appetizers were tasty. The cocktails were definitely decorative and fun for a trip. The service is good anywhere in Cancun so that's to be expected. Would recommend skipping the main meals, buy apps only, and get two cocktails max... or you're getting scammed. What shall I say. You are paying for the experience. This is one of those places you walk into and know right away that your bill is going to be a hefty one, and we were not wrong about that! The ambiance, presentation and staff are all 10/10, but the taste was nothing especially unique or memorable. We felt held hostage there when they wouldn't let any of our family walk out when my husband's bank flagged the purchase and blocked the transaction, which had happened multiple times unfortunately as we were visiting from California. Overall, if you have the money and want some nice pictures and footage if you are celebrating anything, then I guess you might say it's worth the visit, I for one wouldn't return. read more

La Buena Barra is my favorite restaurant. Originally, I made this claim after visiting LBB in MTY. MTY steak is incredible, and I was excited when LBB opened in Cancun - but also a bit worried that it would be a bit touristified/Americanized, but no es verdad. todo bien. With all of the fusion restaurants and concepts in the world, if you had to close your eyes and think to yourself, if i could have any fusion food in the world, what would it be? Obviously the answer is mexican food and a steakhouse. Well, that's Monterrey, and that's La Buena Barra. And I am not going to try and compare the MTY & Cancun locations, but I will say that La Buena Barra will be a memorable part of your trip to Cancun (it hits on all fronts). Also, trust me on this one - eat light if you're going to dinner here because you will want to try as much as possible, and the portions (even apps) are big The highlights (in no particular order) -Decor, both inside and outside but much prefer outside -Service - absolutely incredible. friendly, super attentive without making it stuffy..shout out to Cristian, Peniel, Jese for making my experience a truly memorable one -Food - excellent across the board, but the steak and flavor is something that will standout amongst most high end restaurants -Fun drinks -View -atmosphere, really awesome shift from dinner with DJ & music, lightshow, drinks, and the ability to smoke Of course, I will touch on price. It's pricey and most items are roughly 10-15% higher than MTY, but everything in Cancun is going to be expensive. So, even for US standards it's going to be an expensive evening, and everyone has different opinions on what constitutes value, and I get that. For a full meal, couple drinks, etc - I'd say roughly $100-$150pp, which is similar to what I've experienced in most "nicer" steakhouses in the states. Personally, I think the value for the food/service/experience is well worth it. As for some of my favorite (can't miss) dishes: queso flameado - I feel like this is LBB's Nobu Miso Black Cod, that everyone tries to replicate (especially in Texas). Rib eye & guac - another one that is oft imitated...it's kinda like how youngsters think Ice Ice Baby is an awesome song until they hear Under Pressure. Here is my caveat though: unless you're a party of 3 or more or not ordering steak, you may want to pass on this because at 400grams plus tortillas (side note: both flour and corn tortillas here are amazing, so go with both) is pretty filling Rib Eye - any of their rib eyes are truly incredible steaks Also, this might be the Mexican version of ordering a burger at a steakhouse (but they really do have the best burgers), but two of their tacos in my opinion might change how you see the world forever.. This place has the level of quality that you can find in any major city that has fine dining. The food is delicious. The side Caesar and ceviche are the best entrees. The ribeye was nothing special. The mashed potatoes give any culinary side dish at any major steakhouse a run for its money. The drinks are well made but no buzz. They are at most gimmicks. The lobster and filet mignon we got was a very well made dish. They bring you out meats and fish for you to choose. They brought out a whole pork but we aren't fans of pork. They made a great dessert for a birthday. The ambiance is dance music and just a very loud atmosphere. The staff were super attentive to us. Great! I was honestly bummed when I heard that La Habiscuela closed. However, La Buena Barra is nothing short of delicious! The waitstaff was on top of it the entire night. Jesús and Saúl were great. They brought us complimentary sauces and tostada chips-even bringing new ones twice! Two of the members of our group had the garlic shrimp, the other two (myself included) had the tuna tacos. We order a side of truffle mashed potatoes and fried cauliflower, both of which are amazing. For the cauliflower, they bring an entire head of cauliflower-so there's plenty to share. After the meal, they bring a complimentary shot of mezcal and cranberry juice with lemon. I would highly recommend! *it's good to know that if you are looking for the outside seating that used to be at La Habiscuela, is he restaurant is now split in two. "Doble B" is the outside lower level portion that opens at 6 or 7pm and turns into a night club at around 11pm. The service was superb (Thank you Marco). The only mistake we made was ordering too much food. The portions are HUGE. There were 4 of us and we had 2 appetizers. Melted cheese with al pastor and guacamole. Both were fantastic. Three of us at the table had the garlic prawns and one person had sea-bass. Both were 10/10. Prawns were huge, served over angle hair pasta with garlic butter. Oh My Gosh! Perfectly cooked. So fresh. Presentation was beautiful. The sea bass was buttery, flakey fish heaven. Again, a very large portion. Absolutely delicious. For sides we got the grilled veggies (HUGE amount of food) we didn't even make a dent. Mexican corn. That was just okay. And we also got a side of cauliflower. It's an entire head of roasted cauliflower. Way too much. Overall this meal was incredible. Go for the sunset, scene & steak but check your bill. Hubby rates 2 stars, I give 3 because the food was tasty. Went at sunset, the reception welcome by the hostess and arrival attention from many servers was impressive. The short rib tacos were very large but expected at $360 pesos. The spicy grilled artichoke with grilled cheese was unique. As was the house salad, although we were overcharged for it on the Bill the management was quick to address it. The rib eye cap steak was tasty and served 2 people. FYI it costs 2100 pesos or just over $100+ USD. We ordered it medium temperature, it arrived medium rare. They kindly heated it longer to medium well but it was still a very flavorful dish. It was served with a giant mound of truffle fries. The potatoes were too thinly cut which made them hard to eat, and the large portion of fries was more for show. The grilled onions that accompanied the steak were excellent as were the 6 table salsas. I enjoyed the DJ and we saw a magician visiting other tables doing card tricks. Our servers Omar and Raymundo were very attentive and professional. The cocktails really need improvement, simply put they were really bad. Undrinkable. I asked the 2 "Mixologists" for a mezcal martini, because they had wheeled over a martini-making cart. Each declined to make a martini and pushed me toward a mixed drink from the bar. We ordered 5 different margarita or mezcal drinks, all made at the bar, each was full of sugar and had little alcohol, wasn't able to even catch a buzz. Also asked for no salt on the rim which only happened on the 5th attempt when the waiter intervened for us. I drank my first drink in its entirety, my second was horrible, we asked for more alcohol to be added and rather than make new drinks they added more alcohol that was cheap. We stopped drinking them and they sat full on our table for our entire meal. Yet everything on our table was constantly cleaned and no one asked about our awful drinks. So I shared feedback about the cocktails with 5 different people including 2 managers, the response was "thanks for the advice". We were shocked that we'd have a bad margarita anywhere in Mexico let alone here but hubby said his tasted like car battery acid, yet we were charged 260 pesos each for Patron, it didn't taste like Patron, or anything else than juice. Total drink cost was $60. When the manager presented me with the bill he brought the credit card reader at the same time eager to run the card. Fortunately I asked for more time to review the bill and found the salad discrepancy which was a $5 overage, a lot to overcharge a bowl of romaine lettuce, as well as another discrepancy. The manager came over to apologize for the salad's Incorrect pricing and comp'd it. I took the liberty to tell her how bad the drinks were and that the bartenders and servers really need training. Funny that she would comp a salad, I would have gladly paid the correct price for it because it was good and not have paid for the drinks that sat on our table. La Buena Barra is a close contender for my favorite restaurant in Mexico. We wondered in without much planning in our quest to try most of the locally owned restaurants in and around the hotel zone. La Buena Barra is within walking distance from Westin Lagunamar, Live Aqua, and a few others in that general area. Be advised: La Buena Barra is not what I would consider budget dining. Our dinner for two was about $300 USD, which is very expensive for dining in Mexico. Our bill DID include a $100 cigar, which I will get into later. We were seated on the top level by the bar in a table for two overlooking the lagoon. Wow, and without reservations on a somewhat busy night. Score! The atmosphere is very modern and stylish Mexican with a lower level that turns into a dance floor later at night. There is a house DJ that plays music all throughout the dinner service and it is a little loud at times. I would normally find this to be incredibly annoying, but the music selections were so good and appropriate that it greatly contributed to the overall mood of the dining experience. The music did not impact our ability to converse on the upper level, but I do wonder if it might for those seated on the lower level. You definitely want to be up top, if for no other reason than the great views. Julio and Jaime were our waiters, and they were absolutely phenomenal. Not only could they seem to predict and show up every time we needed something, but they were on the spot with drink and food recommendations and learned our preferences and tastes very quickly. We started with jalapeño margaritas, which were nice with a very subtle hint of jalapeño that I wouldn't describe as spicy. I then went into an assortment of various, Julio-recommended mezcal cocktails that were all very smoky and flavorful. Apologies for not being able to remember the details (things started getting mezcal foggy), but mezcal is somewhat of an acquired taste that I fell in love with during this trip. It isn't for everyone, but I highly recommend giving it a try since it's unlike anything else in the world of liquor. We ordered the Mexican caviar and ribeye crunch appetizers. As far as dishes are concerned, the Mexican caviar was one of the standouts of the entire trip. Fried sopes, refried beans, and bone marrow. It's one of those dishes that you see on the menu, have to order, and are glad you did. The rib eye crunch was also very good, and can easily stand alone, but was unfortunately in the shadow of the Mexican caviar this time around. The ribeye was cooked a perfect medium rare and was over a bed of fresh guacamole and served with flour tortillas. I particularly enjoyed pairing my rib eye crunch tacos with the 5-6 different salsas that Jaime brought to the table. We were fully intending to have entrees as well, but the appetizers were so filling that we went into after dinner mode instead, ordering dessert cocktails and La Buena Barra's homemade churro made in house by their master churrero. I feel like everyone kinda has an idea of what they think a churro is because we've all had very pale comparisons in the states. However, you need to have the real deal at least once to see what you're missing. It's fresh and hot in a pinwheel with barber's scissors to cut and hot caramel and Nutella for dipping. Simply amazing with a perfect outer crunch and moist inside. I noticed a few patrons smoking cigarettes and told Julio I had a crazy question: do they sell cigars? I had seen no signs that they did until this point and was curious. Julio smiled, nodded, and produced a rather large segmented box of an assortment of cigars, many of which were Cuban. I went with the Cohiba Robusto Habana, Cuba since it's one of the kings of Cuban cigars, and hey, I'm on vacation! Julio showed me the $100 USD price tag, but I was already committed at that point (note: you can find the same cigar for around ~$46 if you aren't buying it in a very nice restaurant as cigars in restaurants are marked up similarly to alcohol. No complaints from me). I highly recommend La Buena Barra for anyone wanting a very nice and upscale evening out. You may scoff at the prices I mentioned above, but keep in mind that many of your resorts will over "special" dinner nights with similar prices, but the food and experience won't hold a candle. Very nice location overlooking water place is very modern looking and clean. initially when we walked in I felt a little overwhelmed as if i was being rushed to pick a drink and decide if I wanted to order one if their specialty cut steaks or lobsters I think they were just trying to show great customer service, especially since things are slow It was a little to over the top But I get it. Now the food was outstanding Taco Appetizers were awesome I had the ribeyes taco and softshell crab taco The ribeye was cooked to perfection and very flavorful The drinks were great as well Very good food Place Is a little pricey but I feel the value was there for the quality of food Only recommendation I would change is they had a DJ playing music seemed a little out of place it was a little too loud Also noticed people smoking at tables Didn't really smell it but if place was packed i could see how this would be a problem for me anyways I would definitely eat here again read more

What a great place to experience excellent food, service, and entertainment. The first thing you do when you are seated is offered any custom drink and immediately served sauces and chips. The appetizers are sharable and creative. The pastor comes on its own rotisserie and the flavor is by far the best Ive had. We shared 2 appetizers and a soft shell crab taco that had a fresh crunch and sauces to try. They love their sparklers too so expect to get one if dinning in the evening. I recommend the 24 layer cake. It will feed 3 to 4 people and well worth it! I would come back to try other items of the menu for sure! read more
