Located at Granville Island Public Market, this little stall serves the best tasting canele! It had a crunchy exterior and a soft custardy interior. There were a variety of flavors to choose and it was a tough choice. I decided to try the pistachio, lemon meringue, caramel and passionfruit. All were delicious! Highly recommend to try this spot.
I love cannelés!! Probably my favorite french pastry. If you have never tried one and are on Granville island, go to La Bise bakery inside Granville island public market. I would suggest trying the original cannelé for the real taste. It is quite delicious. It has a caramelized crust and custard made of vanilla and rum in the center. It feels like home to me. There are lots of different flavor to try, I tried a few: matcha, caramel, black sesame... But to me the best is the original.
This spot is in the busy Granville Island Market. I almost walked past this kiosk, but the samples caught my eye. I am so glad I fought the crowd for my sample and eventually got a box of these! These canelés are like nothing I've ever tried. They're sweet, vanilla-flavored, custardy on the inside, crunchy from the caramelization on the outside, and have a very slight rum taste. They have traditional ones and canelés with different flavors like chocolate hazelnut, passionfruit, lemon merengue, matcha, strawberry rhubarb, and more (the different flavors are basically drops of ganache/creams/curds/etc. on top of the traditional canalés). I got a mix of their offerings and was very happy with my pastries! Each one was somewhere between $4 - $6. The woman who took our order was very kind. Overall great experience!
FOOD - Caneles: hard on the outside, soft on the inside. I got the salted caramel and chocolate hazelnut. Both were so good. I just wished the outside wasn't too "burnt". 4/5 - Donut: filled with Bailey's chocolate. So good! 4/5 SERVICE: Fast and friendly. They got me with a sample! lol. 4/5 FINAL THOUGHTS: I would come back to try other flavors.
Really delightful caneles and they have different flavours! The different flavours are simply adding small amount of syrup or sauce into the divot on the top of the caneles. Salted Caramel Canele - Apparently one of the fan favourites! The canele was super dark suggesting super caramelized. The inside was moist and outside crunchy, some great texture! salted caramel flavour was a bit lacking. In all a bit pricey for $5, but nice to try.
I wanted to get some caneles for my sister back home and the staff working there was kind enough to give me some information on its shelf life and how I could store it before flying. Great selection of caneles and great location as well. I got a box of 4 and my sister was very happy with this despite me purchasing this 2 days prior. All in all, I would for sure come back here if I came back to Vancouver!!
It's always a visual feast whenever we visit a public market like Granville Island. La Base Canales is no exception as there were so many Caneles in the glass case, waiting for you to take them home. There were many flavors to choose from, which made it hard to decide which ones to pick. We finally decided on the Traditional plain, Lemon Meringue, Passionfruit Curd, and Black Sesame flavors. The canales were baked to perfection, as the outside layer was crunchy and smoky, while the inside was moist and airy. I am happy to report all of them were delicious, but our favorites were passionfruit and original. My friend was so impressed with them, she bought a bunch to bring home to her loved ones back in Asia. We would totally recommend La Bise Caneles. Just try it, you won't regret it.
We've never heard of or tried caneles before and they called out to us while we were looking at all the flavors in the case. At the front, we tried the free samples and that sold us on getting a couple of different flavors to try. Our order was quickly boxed up to go. The canales were crunchy on the outside and creamy inside. The flavored canales were inconsistent with the pistachio and salted caramel just swirled on top and for the most part tasted mostly like the original plain. On the other hand the lemon meringue not only covered the top but the flavor carried throughout it. They were a bit pricey for the size. .
My canelé dreams have been realized when I found this absolute GEM in the middle of Granville island market. I've tried many canelés all over and La Bise Bakery truly nails the creamy custardy interior and caramelized crunchy exterior flavour and texture. Truly 5/5 canelés here. I love the classic traditional flavour. We also tried the pistachio (I wished had more nuttiness) and the Nutella. Would be keen to try their fruitier flavours next time!
La Bise Bakery has delicious pastry options, and I love that they offer discounts on items they made a bit too much of the day before -- such a nice touch and still super tasty. It's a quick, easy stop whether you're grabbing something on the go or just want a small treat. The staff are friendly and welcoming, which makes the experience even better. Definitely a spot I'd come back to for fresh pastries and a simple, pleasant vibe. read more
Came here to try the canales, and when I saw that they were offering beignets that day, I walked away with a couple of those too!! I got the salted caramel and passionfruit curd canales, as well as a Bailey's chocolate and Passionfruit chantilly beignets. Canales were good, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, I really enjoyed the salted caramel flavor. The beignets they sell here are not like the ones I enjoy in the states: Cafe Du Monde style - square with powdered sugar. They are more like malasadas (filled donuts). While they were good, I wouldn't say they were anything super special. I would stick with the canales if you come here. read more

enjoyed the fancy canales and apparently it's pretty labor intensive to make it. $5 CAD for a traditional one. There were free samples given out if you go to the stall. read more

The canales were such a unique treat. I've never seen or heard of these little delights previously, but I was told I needed to try them. They were incredibly dense and sweet. The crunchy caramelized exterior was delicious. So good. read more

It's awesomely made and the staffs are amazing, they're serving the pistachio caneles as sample, we asked for a sample of their bitter orange and she did it for us. The caneles are sweet, we like the classic one, it's a good match with unsweetened coffee or tea. read more

This is a little Kiosk inside Granville Islands farmers market. These are by far, my most favorite desserts in the entire world. And this is the first time I've ever tried them. It took everything in me not to go back and buy the entire store for my trip back home. Every flavor did not disappoint. These little caneles are crunchy on the outside and soft and gooey on the inside. We got a pack of six which consisted of salted caramel, bitter, orange, marmalade, pistachio, pumpkin, and cookie butter. I cannot emphasize enough how delicious these desserts are. If you are in the area, stop by and try. You will not regret it! read more
Their caneles are good looking and tasty! They kept giving out samples of their bestselling passion fruit canele and I was instantly sold. The citrusy note from the filling was so refreshing, encased in the crunchy shell. I also got the pistachio one but passion fruit was still my favorite. read more

La Bise - Salted Caramel Canele ($4.25) 9/10 Tbh this is the only canele I've tried in Vancouver, but I do think they make a good canele. Texture was beautiful with crunchy caramelised exterior and nice custardy centre. Taste wise you could tell both the distinct vanilla and rum flavour. I went with the salted caramel flavour, which apparently won a competition, but the caramel made the canele a tad too sweet for me. Next time I'll be interested in trying the original or dark cherry flavour. read more

It's hard to miss this kiosk at Granville market. Smack dab in the middle of the long market, these little caneles soldiers are all lined up at attention, demanding to be seen. I was about to pass it up because I've never understood the hype for these. The ones I've had have all been dry in the middle and hard on the outside. Luckily for me, the nice lady behind the counter saw me staring and offered a sample. Even with my prior experience, how can I turn down a free sample? I'm no fool. She suggested I try her favorite, the passionfruit curd topped canele. What in the world?? I get it. I get the hype. Caramelized sugar outer coating and the middle part had a moist, custardy interior. The passionfruit curd was the perfect balance of bright citrus to cut through the sweet. I ended up getting 2 for $5/ each. Passionfruit and yuzu. Passionfruit is still my favorite, and it was the perfect sweet ending to a dreary rainy day. I wish I got another 2. She also sold a sampler box of 9 mini pieces for$15. I have an additional regret for not getting it. Don't make my mistake. Get all the caneles! read more
We love their caneles. We discovered them on our last trip to Vancouver and we loved them so much that we decided to get some on our recent trip as well. They are crunchy outside and soft inside. All the fillings we tried are very good. read more
Had some time to head to Granville Island, one of my favourite places in Vancouver. Was looking for something different and found this place in the market building. Am very glad I stopped! Sooooo yummy. Quite a few flavours to choose from but I decided on Passion Fruit and Salted Carmel. The outside was crispy with a little bit of chew and the inside was lovely moist. The little dollop of passion fruit was perfect and full of passion fruit flavour! The Salted Carmel was just as outstanding. There are lots of food options in Granville Island but I would definitely recommend a visit here. read more

Someone gave us a box of cannele from La Bise Bakery on Granville Island. It's been awhile since we had these canneles. We did buy a box earlier this year but it was a sample box of miniature canneles. I had forgotten how good these biggers ones were, but it came came rushing back to me with one bite. Easily my favourite canneles within Metro Vancouver! read more
Never had a canelé before and wow! Where have you've been all my life?!! We spotted this gem at the Granville island market and they looked so delectable, we had to try one. They're small little pastries shaped like muffins for lack of a better description. The outside is caramelized and crispy and the inside is so soft. It was topped with different custards- we chose the passion fruit curd one. The passion fruit flavor was really citrusy- perfect with the caramelized sweetness of the outside. Simply amazing! A little i the pricy side but they're perfect to impress! I would definitely get again! read more

I was super excited and happy when I read about La Bise Bakery opening in Granville Island Public Market. This is a much more convenient location as I can just pop by anytime I have a craving for caneles. I first tried the caneles from La Bise at the commissary kitchen on 5th Ave last year or so. It was so good, but I never went back as you need to pre-order and then pick up there. I was lucky enough to try the caneles and filled donuts (equally good) when I happened to be there and they still had stock. I love French pastries and two items (caneles and kouign amann) are my favorite but are quite hard to find, especially good ones. I have asked at several patisseries here if they have caneles. Some do not know what I am referring to, and others said they don't make it as it is too time consuming. So it is really a treat to have La Bise Bakery to specialize in it. The caneles here have different flavored toppings at the top. I have tried all 6 flavors (chocolate hazelnut, passionfruit curd, cookie butter, orange marmalade, pistachio cream and salted caramel). as well as the traditional plain. I also like the mini plain version. I much prefer the traditional plain canele. I love the slightly sticky chewy caramelized crust with the soft custardy spongy texture inside. It is just perfect with a cup of unsweetened tea. The mini size is great for days when you just want a bit. Being small, there is less of the soft custardy center but the crisp exterior more than make up for it. For the flavored toppings, I like the passionfruit curd as the tartness of the fruit cuts the sweetness of the canele. Cookie butter is like speculoos, a bit heavy on the palate. Since you can hardly find caneles in Vancouver, I do highly recommend this place. read more
La Bise Bakery at Granville Island only sells canele. They offer free samples and that's what drew me in. They were delicious. Highly recommend a stop there! It's perfectly crunchy on the outside and gooey (but not super) inside. read more

Yum!!!!! First time trying the donuts and cannnele's. They had me at passionfruit curd! That's literally what sold me on trying this little place out. They don't have an actual physical store (yet) but if you do a pre-order on Instagram, you can pic up at around Granville and 5th. You just ring the doorbell and they will bring your order out to you. I paid with debit, she brought the machine out as well. The flavour donuts we got were Passionfruit cream, custard, Bailey's and Raspberry jam. They were all amazing, but of course the passionfruit was my all time fav. Not too sweet, and the flavour was subtle but delicious. The cannele with the passion fruit curd was my absolute favorite, the curd was so delicious and full of flavour and with the burnt caramel flavour from the cannele it was a perfect match. The raspberry donut was probably my least favorite, I found it a bit too sweet. Eventhough you know this was just the best homemade jam with fresh raspberries, for me, with the donut it was too much. On a buttery piece of toast, perfect! I wonder if they sell it as jam I'll ask next time! Be sure to go, it is worth it! read more

Served out of a crowded commissary kitchen on 5th Avenue La Bise Bakery features the skills of Nicole Scriabin, a former Creative Manager at Food Network UK who only began baking when she returned to Vancouver to assist an elderly family member. Ordered via instagram and obtained by ringing a doorbell, Scriabin herself affable on Friday at 11:00am, La Bise specializes in hand-rolled Donuts and Canele de Bordeaux, each offered with housemade Cream, Curd, Preserves or Compote. Truly a passion project, the "do one thing and do it well" ethos evident on visual examination, Donuts feature Brioche fried at high temperature to create a yielding golden exterior over springy insides while Caneles crack to yield mellow Custard with slight bitterness akin to the very best in France. Perhaps not an ideal spot for purists, though a "Traditional" Canele and Cinnamon Sugar Donut are available daily, La Bise ups the ante by way of everything from Sour Cherries to Cookie Butter, though the very best bites come from delicate Pistachio Cream and award-winning Salted Caramel. read more
Brioche style deep fried donuts with fillings and a sugary coating are all the craze right now. Their version of donuts really instills pleasure. They are not only rich, but intensely flavoursome. The soft texture of the dough and the intensity of the velvety fillings, made for an extravagant bite. We tried tres leche, custard cream, baileys chocolate and passionfruit chantilly. Our favourites were the classic Baileys chocolate pairing and the concentrated passionfruit, the tropical citrusy character came through very well. The tres leche (a triple daily milk cream) was intriguing but it was quite rich, perfect with a cup of strong tea. Definitely give them a try if you are in the area. read more
Their canelés have potential. The outside was amazingly crisped with a deep toasty/honeycomb flavor. The passion fruit custard was phenomenal with a bold, fruity flavor and a smooth texture. They also give just the right amount of custard to complement the canelé. Overall, the presentation was immaculate. However, the inside was slightly under and less eggy than I wanted it to be. Not sure if this is a regular occurrence or if they were rushed due to the number of people going in and out of granville market. Not going to lie though, it was still really good and I can only imagine how good it could be. Location is a center booth in Granville market but while the place is busy, there wasn't a line to actually get a canelé. In a way it is nice that it is in a popular location as that means the pastries don't sit around too long before being eaten. If it tells you anything, this was the only thing I actually bought while going around granville market. If I find myself back there, I'd definitely give them another try. read more
Okay, if this is what canele dreams are made of then this bakery is it! This was our 2nd time to ever eat canele and WOW were we blown away. I don't give out many 5 stars, but this bakery takes the cake. 5 stars all around! The textures were insane and the flavors were also incredible. The outside of the canele was crunchy and sugary (in a good way!!) and the inside had a slightly soft interior which amazing. I wish we got a plain one to truly taste the beauty of this French pastry. The best part??? It's not too sweet!! A true dream come true. We grabbed 4 flavors: -passionfruit - 10/10 the best one, we all agreed and ranked this as our #1 choice. the passionfruit was perfectly sweet and tart -pistachio - divine. I am genuinely enjoying pistachio these days and this one didn't miss. -almond cream - this one was ok, I would have liked more almond flavor or perhaps some frangipane? -chocolate ganache (easter) - definitely could pass on this one, but the kids wanted the chocolate flavored one bc they love chocolate. it also came with a little chocolate candy egg on top which appealed to them the most hehe Overall, we will be picking up caneles when we're at Granville which is every time we visit BC Canada so see y'all very soon!
