I had the pleasure of having their traditional pastel de nata and a cup of Americano with the whole cafe to myself yesterday afternoon at 2pm. Knowing their hours are limited and being within striking zone of the cafe, I had to go to see if their pastéis de nata meet the hype. Yes, they do! The pastry was crisp, flaky and buttery. With each bite, the pastry had a crunch and bites fell on the plate. The egg filling was creamy, not too sweet, warm and finished with a slight char on top. My Americano was piping hot with steam rising so my perfect cup of joe. I took the time to sit in the cafe and enjoy. At 2pm, it wasn't busy.
Comparing other Portuguese egg tarts in Vancouver, Casa de Nata comes the closest to the traditional ones made in Portugal which I have tasted. Funny enough, I was in Amsterdam early this week and also stopped by a shop selling the Portuguese egg tarts and they also come close to the ones made in Portugal but I liked Casa de Nata better.
