It's a very local spot so it wasn't too busy on a Thursday night!! The staff is very sweet but they don't speak English very well so we just pointed to what we wanted and we made it work!! We tried the 17.5 euro course menu and ordered all its famous dishes including foie gras, charcuterie plate, veal dish, cog au vin, creme brulee, and tiramisu. The charcuterie plate and tiramisu was edible and the foie gras was rather nice, but the two main dishes- the veal and cog au vin were simply horrible. And their creme brulee somehow tasted like cheap pizza. All their dishes were served in huge amounts, so we had to throw away 3/4 of the food. I feel bad for the ingredients. read more

What can we say, Rick Steve's was right on target. The food was hearty, the bread amazing, and the Wine offered good values. I had the filet of boeuf and my wife had the cassoulet. Both dishes were well prepared, delicious, and great comfort food. I wish they had a larger wine list would be my only gripe. Highly recommend this restaurant. read more

My first experience with Coq Au Vin did not disappoint. Came in here for dinner and arrived a bit early. The server allowed us to sit and drink some beer which was convenient as it was pretty cold outside. I kind of knew what I wanted before coming here. For the app we went with their Foie Gras which was pretty good. We then went with the Coq Au Vin, which was one of the best dishes I had on my trip. The noodles were cooked to perfection, the sauce was full of flavor and tasted like someone took some time preparing it and the meat was delicious. Thought it was a hearty and flavorful dish. Went with a chocolate cake for dessert that was served in a mason jar, and I actually didn't really care for it. The service was great and the prices were reasonable. read more

Yes to the meat board! They give you the whole log of meat to cut off whatever portions you want. I had the duck casserole dish and was very happy with it. Very traditional French food here. It is open late and we came here because no one else wanted to stay open late that night and closed earlier than their hours posted. I'm happy that I was able to come here and enjoy a good warm French meal with unlimited charcuterie! The staff here is very nice too. read more

Excellent. Excellent food. We ordered foie gras, beef tartare and salade landaise. Everything was so amazing I think we made noises of delight the entire time. The foie gras came with jam and a fresh basket of warm bread. The beef tartare arrived with crispy potatoes and salad in delicious creamy dressing. The salad was tossed with the same dressing, bacon and pieces of duck. Pieces of toasted baguette with melted brie cheese lined the plate. The restaurant serves French food with specialities from the southwest. The staff are welcoming and the food very good and reasonably priced. Our waitress was friendly and the chef came round to make sure everyone had enjoyed their meal. I loved the cosy atmosphere in this bistro and will come back soon. read more

The area around Nice station has lots of Asian and kebab restaurants, but if you're looking for traditional French food, this place is great. I ate here twice during Monaco GP weekend. Coq au Vin and Entrecote de Veau were both excellent. Prix Fixe comes with salad and desert, 17 euro. Creme Caramel was amazing. Like lots of French places, doesn't open till 7pm. read more

Definitely a lesson in "Dont judge a book by its cover". We were a little concerned when we arrived and no one was in the restaurant, the windows and furniture was scratched and were given menus that were falling apart. However OMG was the food good. Very traditional French dishes done superbly. Portions are very large. Service very accommodating. The wine list is on a chalkboard - no bottles over 25 euros. We got the Duck Margret (was a little tough), the Coq Au Vin (out of this world!!), and a steak with bearnaise (done perfectly). For apps we had the foie gras (wow good) and the charcuterie which had so many good meets in such large portions that we couldn't finish. The only reason im giving a four star is the ambience. Btw by the end of meal the restaurant was brimming with locals. read more

The food was nothing like to what we had ordered - and didn't taste good neither. After the meal was over, we never got in touch with the staff. Great place to eat The atmosphere is great and you will eat at fair price a qualitative, very traditional food coming from the Southwest of France. Not so sophisticated but in solid quantity : take the deli meat plancha as a starter then go to the roasted confit of duck along with the "Sarlat" potatoes, you will be stuffed for a week at best price. read more

OMG. I was a solo traveler, looking or an early dinner. After a beer on the street (they have a few plastic tables) I wandered in as soon as it seated dinner. There was no rugby match, but nevertheless, I thoroughly enjoyed my meal. I asked my server what he recommended and it was a thin steak (?beef??lamb??) in a cream/sage/spice sauce. It was decadent. I may have as well have licked the friggin plate. Next to me a few local guys were they were enjoying dinner...who were followed by some teens who were probably relatives of the chef. Everything was good. I had the mozzerella/tomato/basil salad--the basil was amazing--you heard them beat it on the counter as they prepared the dinner. It really looks like a hole-in-the-wall from the outside...and it may be, just a bit...but the food was great. Don't go there for your typical steak or american food, otherwise you will miss out...I think that's typical for European travel. Hell, you went there to experience France, right!?!?! read more

We went on recommendation from Yelp. We were not disappointed. My jaw dropped when they brought out the charcuterie platter. Six different Salumi, a basket of bread and our waiter said "eat as much as you want". I had tastes of all of them and then went back for more. Each one was different and absolutely delicious. My partner had the foie gras and it melted in your mouth. For entrees I had the veal cutlet which was cooked perfectly (medium not well done) and my partner had the steak in green pepper corn sauce. The steak was tender and cooked as requested (rare). The accompanying veggies and potatoes were perfect compliments to our entries. For dessert he opted for the fruit salad but also ate half of my fresh raspberry Napoleon. The service was great and we felt like we had been there many times before. Mind you all this was 42 euro ( not including wine - we don't drink. This is a great place off the tourist track. It's a real gem. read more

Doesn't look like much from the outside, but the food, based on what I ordered, is delicious. I tried the coq au vin (wine chicken) after seeing pictures on Yelp. The taste matches the look: fantastic. It also smells very good as soon as they bring the plate to the table. I had a glass of red wine with it, but I don't know what wine it was; I just asked for a glass, and it was better than the other wine I had in Nice, or France in general. read more

This was my first meal in France, and what a way to kick off a week and a half of eating through the French Riviera and Provence. L'Ovale will hold a special place in my heart due to the kindness of the staff towards my family's lack of confidence in speaking or ordering in French on our first evening there. We were in Malta before traveling to France, and had grown accustomed to heading out for the evening meal in the late afternoon or early evening hours. We arrived too early and the restaurant was not yet open, there were two women setting up and they greeted us and asked us to come back in fifteen minutes. This gave us the perfect opportunity to see more of the area before we headed back to the restaurant. When we came back we were immediately seated, and quickly offered an apéritif. We ordered either the Menu à 22,90 € or the 16,90 € which offered an entrée, plat and dessert. My mother and I each ordered the salade niçoise which was just right. My father, feeling more adventurous, had the planche de charcuterie which was served as a variety of cold meats with pâté, cornichons and delicious bread. It was an overwhelming opener to a fabulous meal, and though this meal happened weeks ago, my father still talks about how fabulous the charcuterie was. The bread provided to our table was fresh and warm and gone before we knew it. For the plat we received Cassoulet (this was on the 22,90 menu), Confit de canard fermier des landes, and the Pièce du boucher grillée ou en sauce. We loved each plat. My steak was massive and nothing like American steaks which are cut in recognizable shapes and tend to be inconsistently prepared. My mother received the canard (duck) and loved it. Our plates both came with potatoes and vegetables along side our meats. My father loved his cassoulet. It was the heaviest meal between our three, and after the charcuterie and cassoulet, he was too full for dessert even though it was included with our meals. For dessert we chose a chocolate cake, and a strawberry cake. The chocolate cake was rich and the strawberry cake was very light. It was a great combination and ending to our meal. All in all it was a delicious meal in a comfortable and friendly restaurant. The servers were kind and patient and did their best despite our silly mistakes and lack of confidence with the language. We noticed no other tourists, but there were multiple families and friends meeting up for dinner, and the neighborhood feel of the restaurant only added to our wonderful experience. read more

Great food with a good fix prix menu. You get alot of food so come with a health appetite. The only reason they dont get 5 stars is that my steak came as a bloody rare instead of medium, and after pointing this out, ended up as a medium/well-done.
