Part of our three week trip in France included a three day stop in Nice. Fortunately, we elected to stay at a place that was near the heart of it all including a vast array of restaurants. Among them, L'Escalinada. A quaint restaurant with the quintessential sidewalk seating area, L'Escalinada (L'E) has old world charm. As we approached, we mistakenly assumed L'E was like all of the other restaurants nearby, stroll up, grab any open table and await your order to be taken. However, when we selected a table outside we were promptly greeted with a curt waiter asking if we had a reservation. Surveying the surrounding area, plenty of tables were open and available but since we did not have a reservation that was allegedly required, we were seated inside closest to the pizza oven on an already hot day. Our waiter stopped by, got our food and drink orders and cleared butter knives from two of us who ordered pizza. As he walked away he loudly and very annoyingly clanged the butter knives together as if sending a signal to the open kitchen right behind us. Paranoia? Perhaps. Conspiracy theorist in the blooming? Maybe. But never having this experience in any other area restaurant or in all of France over a three-week period makes one feel rather suspicious. Of course I know all of the classic torts trolls will bring to this conversation but don't because you were not there to experience it for yourself! All of that aside, the Escalinada pizza I ordered eventually arrived and while edible it was the furthest thing from the best pizza I've ever tasted. Over saturated with standing pools of moisture, soggy dough in the middle, and less than underwhelming flavor. If it were me, I would gladly pass up L'E for any of the other great choices around the area. Lastly, while all of this may be standard practice for this particular restaurant, the quality, taste, and value of the food is the cake and the guest's experience is the icing. Therefore, a rather lackluster performance on all accounts.

    Pasta with meat sauce

I tried out the pasta with meat sauce here. While the pasta seemed fresh, it was pretty pricy all things considered that there was barely any meat, or sauce for that matter, and there was just a slice of carrot. I also had some fried courgette slices, which unfortunately appeared to be more batter than vegetable. Location wise it's based right in old town, the restaurant being spread out between two buildings. There's not too much space inside, so expect to be sat outside with people maneuvering around close by. The staff were pretty accommodating considering that we arrived quite close to closing for lunch (they did turn people away after us), and some small appetisers and rosé wine were included as starters. They did however forget our drinks orders, which I had to clarify to remove from the bill. Maybe a less pressing time would have been better for this place than a late lunch.

Great meal in France!…read more This was a fantastic first dinner in Nice right off the main drag. We had reservation for 7pm and arrived a few minutes early. We waited a few minutes while they prepped our table and we were seated promptly. The vibe was cool, very French cafe feeling on the streets. The waiters were kind and attentive was you settled in. They patiently answered all our menu questions. We ordered the fois gras (because when in France), the duck and the octopus. All the food was excellent, the fois gras was perfect (although probably wouldn't order it again for ethical reasons). The octopus was absolutely perfect, very very easy to screw up, but they nailed it; every bit melting in our mouths. The duck breast was perfect, juicy and cooked to perfect. All the dishes were served with plenty of accompaniment. Great meal for a great French experience. Would highly recommend.

Walked over from a nearby hotel and grabbed a table by myself along the busy street. The servers…read morewere very friendly and spoke English well. It happened to be happy hour so I was able to take advantage of some great drink deals. For my dinner, I ordered the duck with vegetables, potatoes, and added a side of ratatouille. It was all very good and the portions were large for the price. The orange sauce was unique and it seemed to have orange peels in it as well. While this might be more of a touristy spot with this location, it was a true French menu, which was my goal. The food and service were very good and I'll come back.

This was our favorite meal of our trip to Nice!…read more Warning: Reservations are hard to come by we dropped by and only reservations available were for 9pm two nights later. We took it. The place is super relaxed. 5 maybe 6 tables which made the difficulty of reservations more understandable. Prix fix menu - 4 appetizers to choose from, 4 entrees and 4 desserts. We were there with somewhat of a limited diet, but the options were awesome. We got a cauliflower appetizer and an artichoke one. Both were excellent. We all had the cod for dinner also delicious - served in a bath of traditional fish soup and with potatoes. The dessert was also excellent - we got the goat cheese in olive oil and garlic, the cream cheese with blueberry compote, lemon cheesecake and cinnamon "tiramisu". Every bite was full of flavor and such cool takes on the food. Now the intangibles - we arrived for our 9pm reservation, restaurant closes at 9:30 and we probably didn't walk out until 11:15 and there was still another table of 8 people dining. The host/waiter, Sebastian, was awesome. So friendly and we at no point felt rushed. In fact the opposite. When our daughter was slow in finishing her meal he joked with her instead of hurrying us along. Once we finished our main dish, he casually brought us our dessert and because we didn't order his favorite (we didn't know) he brought us out an extra to enjoy. We felt a little bad so somewhat accelerated the dessert phase so we could square up and leave. Instead he was unhurried, he casually cleared our table and chatted with us for a bit. It took us another 15 minutes before we finally said could we get the bill. He brought it to us another 5-7 minutes later. We had a great experience and one of our best meals in France, if not the best.

Overall, I'd say the food is a 3.5/5 but the value is 5/5. I'd recommended Chez Palmyre if you want a real Nice experience, especially on a budget. Be sure to make a reservation well in advance.
