It is the kind of ice cream that is suitable for any time of the year; though summer has been a particularly popular time, naturally. While I like to rock a cone for my green tea matcha, going with a sundae version in a larger cup with mochi and tapioca balls is not a bad way to go either. When ice cream gets too fancy with the toppings, it is prime instagram material. Via Tokyo certainly has a lot of love in that department. Though their claim to fame is the green tea flavor, I really enjoy their Hokkaido milk on its own. It is simple, yet super creamy in texture and strangely addicting. I would also recommend dabbling in their seasonal / monthly flavor, which was most recently black sesame. The black sesame tasted like peanut butter, which is a flavor that will always resonate well with me. Can't make up your mind? Get a waffle bowl / cup that showcases all three. Your group (or just you) will be extremely happy you did. A reminder that it is cash only and prices will range from 35-55 for cones and combinations. So what makes this Bakery so special? We went an hour before closing, but they were still making the tarts fresh. We ordered 10 tarts, 8 regular egg tarts, 2 caramel custard and 2 bacon mushroom pies. The secret lies within their ultra buttery and flaky crust. It is lightly sweet and since they just came out from the oven, they were warm and the light sweetness of the crust jumps out at you. It is so different from the egg tarts that have crusts made with lard or shortening. The custard is lightly sweet and very delicate. The bacon and mushroom pie was also very good and filled with thick cut Smokey sweet bacon and mushrooms. I would buy both egg tarts and savory pies again in a heartbeat. Everything is reasonably priced. Egg tarts cost just over a $1 each and the bacon mushroom pie is just under $2. Sooo yummy!

You'll be sitting basically elbow to elbow with strangers next and behind you. But that doesn't matter because their desserts are so wonderful! Some of my favorites are the tong yuen (glutinous rice balls) that come come with peanut sauce. The one that comes in the ginger soup is good too (for this dish, the balls have fillings inside, such as sesame or peanut sauce). Another good one is their sorbets, which are perfect for a hot day.

Once seated, my friends and I spent some time browsing through the extensive dessert menu and settled on trying the durian with crystal seeds (one of the many popular dishes) and watermelon and lychee with crystal seeds. In summary, the watermelon and lychee were ok. The watermelon ended up being too watery for my taste and the lychee wasn't too memorable. Both tasted decent but definitely not a must try. For the durian, this was surprisingly good! I am normally not a durian fan (the stench gets to me sometime) but here, you couldn't really smell too much of the durian in the dish. The taste of durian was also soften quite a bit, making this dish a bit more doable for those who do not like durian. I found this dish to be pretty tasty and not too sweet and it was unique to eat it with the crystal seeds. Overall, this is a great spot to stop by for desserts. If you're not a fan of durian but can tolerate the smell of it wafting through the restaurant, this place is great to try other HK desserts at an affordable price.
