Extremely disappointed. I spent around $70 for 3 skeins of yarn that is literally ripping apart while being wound. The plies separate, the strand snaps with minimal tension, and the yarn is clearly structurally compromised. At this price point, I expect yarn that can withstand basic handling. This skein behaves like old, brittle, or under-plied stock, and is completely unusable for any durable project. I've worked with many yarns (including much cheaper ones) and have never experienced breakage like this during normal winding. If this is how the store curates and stores their inventory, especially given the premium pricing. I won't be purchasing yarn here again unless quality control improve. The women here working are nice enough, but quality makes me not wanna come back. read more

Love this place! It is quaint, communal, and inspirational. For one, it's a small craft business which I am always happy to see and support. They have a variety of quality yarns and craft ideas. I had a bit of an SOS with a baby blanket project, so I went in for some support. When I walked in there were women crocheting all around the counter, talking and laughing. The women behind the counter was quick to put my stitches back together. Something so complex to me was nothing to this master of yarn. This place has my loyalty. I'll definitely be here for my next project. read more

This is an odd one; sort of the opposite of what you'd usually expect in a local yarn shop. The customer service is fantastic. They are nice, and go above and beyond! But the "yarns" that they stock are of a different type. The yarns are moreso synthetic and novelty yarns, from other countries. If you're a non-traditional knitter, then you'd probably enjoy their offerings. The prices are also pretty high. I think given the neighborhood, it fits right in. read more

I bought yarn last year (2018) when I was visiting in Southern CA. My friend and I were taken with some pretty sparkly yarn but not sure what we could do with it. The owner volunteered that she could customize a pattern for each of us using the sparkly yarn as a lace inset. It sounded like a good idea so we each bought yarn for the our projects. The owner took measurements, had us knit swatches and gave each of us the start to our patterns with the promise of sending the rest of the pattern within the week. That is where the good experience ended. The pattern was not carefully thought through. The sleeve shaping on the cap of the sleeve did not match the body shaping for the sleeve inset for either of us. Being an experienced knitter I was able to reconfigure the sleeve to fit after ripping out the cap portion. The directions on my friend's pattern for the sleeve was missing a crucial sentence. The lace inset instructions on my pattern were different from my friend's and gave a distorted shape. It turned out that the lace should have been a 4 row repeat instead of a 2 row repeat. My friend had the correct directions. In short, had we not been able to compare patterns both sweaters would have been a disaster. My friend says she will have to frog the sweater and start over. I set mine aside in frustration and finally went back to the project, finishing it this month (Dec 2019). Along with this, the yarn quantity on my project was miscalculated. I e-mailed the shop repeatedly saying I would not have enough yarn and received no response. Eventually I contacted Jimmy Beans Wool and was able to find the needed yarn. I conveyed this to L'Atelier and finally received a reply saying it was good to hear I had found the yarn. In summary, the yarn shop has nice yarn in the high end price range. Our in shop experience was good but everything went down hill from there. If you are buying yarn for a project, double check the amounts for yourself to be sure you have sufficient yarn and stay away from the offer of a custom pattern. read more

I want to like this store, but the customer service is all over the place. I have multiple times felt like apologizing for bothering them, and feel like an "outsider". I have attempted to set up a small group of friends to work on projects together, but have received the feedback that they don't want to go back due to the subtly hostile nature of the interactions. This is not consistent- I have had some good experiences, but just as often have wanted to get out of there ASAP. We are now planning on driving out of the area to find a more welcoming environment. read more

I love to support local and small businesses and therefore was very happy and excited to drive to Redondo Beach from Irvine on a Sunday. Yelp said it was open on Sundays till 4pm, how great as most yarn stores are closed on Sundays. It was almost a 2-hour drive, and I was beyond disappointed to learn that they were closed. If I could add a sixth star to L'Atelier's Yelp rating, I would. Their high level of professionalism and customer service are rare in businesses today. I received a personal email from the owner, Karen, who mistakenly thought I had left them a bad Yelp review. Upon contacting them, we quickly realized that they were confusing me with another Yelp reviewer with whom I share the same first name and last initial. Karen was apologetic and eager to rectify the negative experience she thought I'd had. I don't think I've ever received a personal email/phone call from the owner of a company so eager to ensure my happiness as a customer! I was so impressed that I felt compelled to update my original review to commend L'Atelier on their approach to providing exceptional service. The fact is each time I go to the store, EVERYONE is as helpful and friendly as they were the very first time I visited. I don't visit the store nearly as often as I'd like to, but L'Atelier has earned a loyal, lifetime customer. read more

Very disappointed. Was excited to look as I've been knitting and crocheting a lot during covid and I've been enjoying it. I went here to try and find new yarn and whatever other things this store might have. I was greeted with dirty looks and when I told them i was starting to knit they told me very rudely to "go to Joanns". Will not be going back, I felt very disrespected and disappointed because I wanted to try out a local shop instead of going to a big chain for yarn... you'd think they'd want my business and not push away customers. read more

Okay, so maybe this review is a little harsh but I think it has to be said just so people know what they are getting into. Essentially, L'Atelier carries some of the best yarn you will ever be able to buy in LA County...but that's pretty much it. If pure cashmere at $70 for 60 yards is your thing, then this is your place. Usually there are BMWs and Mercedes cars parked out front. They're like the Rodeo Drive of Yarn Shops, complete with salesperson who looks at you with incredulity if you walk in looking poor. If you are a student or can't afford a Benz or pure cashmere sweaters, then I strongly recommend skipping L'Atelier and trying a more reasonably priced LYS like Compatto or Yarns Unlimited. read more

This is my favorite yarn store. Although it's been a while since I've been able to get down there. They have another store on Montana in Santa Monica, but this one was first and Karen, the proprietor, is usually at this one. Be warned: this is NOT Michaels. These are high end yarns that will cost you a premium, if you are serious about knitting. But if you join the Sweater of the Month Club, you get significant year-round discounts on particular groups of yarns (Italian, French or English manufacturers) and special monthly discounts on featured yarns and patterns. It's beautifully arranged and organized -- unless you're there for their annual Gumball sale when it's chaos. If you're learning to knit, the staff will teach you, no charge, as long as you buy your yarn from them and they are always available for emergency questions if you get stuck. The Redondo store in particular attracts a certain crowd of regulars who are the loveliest women in the world! They will welcome you warmly and once you're in, they give new meaning to "Stitch & Bitch". You can sit, play with new yarns before you buy them, chat with the ladies, learn new knitting tricks from the many experienced patrons (if one of the extremely knowledgeable staff is busy helping someone else out), and figure out life's problems in the process. Drove over 45 minutes to go here and was super excited to see what they had after checking out their website and even though their yelp and google page says they are open with hours posted and everything they are CLOSED and customers cannot come in to shop. I can't express how much I love this store. I'm so happy I finally went in. I had been put off by some the reviews here but when I went in, toting my 9 year old with me, we were greeted so nicely and made to feel welcome. I am a newer knitter and very intimidated but they promised me they would help me through anything. I ended up going back, buying a kit for the sweater of the month, and sitting down with their help! I've been back many times over the course of my sweater and it's amazing. The store is gorgeous and the salespeople are all so welcoming and kind. The yarns are so beautiful and you will want to knit everything you see! I love this place. I love just going in and sitting to knit with the other ladies. Everyone is so nice and not judgmental when I mess something up royally! There are great stores nearby to shop and great restaurants. It's such a fun store. Aww, L'Atelier is moving, although only down the street :) Anyway, I'm not sure how I missed this shop or the fact that there's a sister one in santa monica. And I'm so not into knitting things like sweaters, but the yarn selection here is so yummy! Plus you'll end up saving a lot with their Sweater of the Month club even if you don't knit sweaters but you buy lots of yarn. I think I'm totally missing the boat on the whole Filatura Di Crosa yarn craze though, maybe I might get it if I knit sweaters..meh. read more

This is a gorgeous, upscale yarn boutique. It gets double bonus points for its great location which allows you to have an awesome lunch, shop at unique artsy stores, and KNIT! The store has beautiful, beautiful samples. Everywhere I looked I saw something I wanted to knit. I loved that it has many inviting areas for social knitting and classes. They're organized almost like a knitting cafe. There were several groups of knitters happily chatting away. The store has gorgeous yarns worthy of Vogue knitting. Why only 3 points? I saw a project I loved but couldn't buy the yarn I needed to make it. Because I live 50+ miles away, ordering the yarn and coming back wasn't an option. I typically like to browse a yarn store on my own, but since I was looking for the yarns for the project, I had to rely on the saleswoman to help me find the yarns I needed. I felt sorry for the saleswoman because she had to divide her attention between me and another shopper. She showed me the pattern and three specific brands of yarn I needed, but in colors that absolutely wouldn't work together. Because the store is organized by color instead of brand, I struggled to find the yarns in colors that would work together. If I found the right yarn in ugly orange and wanted to find out if they had it in beautiful blue, it was so hard to find! Grrrrrr. Truthfully, I probably couldn't have found the yarns I needed in the quantities I needed. It's likely I would have needed to order them and come back. Some people indicated that the store's patrons or salespeople are snobby. Even though I was dressed in shorts, a tee shirt and flip flops, I didn't experience this. The salespeople were friendly and extremely helpful. Some of the patrons were focused on projects and some looked up and smiled. Would I come back again? It's iffy. Because I left empty-handed and thwarted in finding the yarn for a project, it wasn't a positive experience. Would I recommend that YOU stop by to check it out? ABSOLUTELY. My local knit shop has closed. Thankfully you all have not. To be honest though our local shop was not comparable to your shop as to yarn, staff, patterns etc.. Last evening I ordered the shawl/scarf kit and mistakingly failed to note that I was a "member.: Today I called the Palos Verde shop and Robyn picked up. She is amazing! She is always so pleasant and patient and fun to talk to regardless of the topic. She corrected my ordering mistake and told me also about future events via zoom and assured me that if I like a pattern but not the yarn a substitution could be made. Robyn always amazes me as to how willing she is to make knitting from afar more fun and with better results. Thank you again Robyn and I promise I will try to be as pleasant and agreeable as you always are! read more

L'atelier now makes appointments in 1/2 hour segments so you can come in and have questions answered plus help on your projects, all very safe in this time of Covid. I had made an appointment last week and asked if I could also bring my 89 y/o Mother. Robyn was so gracious and said of course you can. We arrived for our noon slot and Theresa answered my questions and demonstrated stitches. I said that my Mom would like a project that was very simple with soft, fun yarn. She picked out a variegated in Mom's favorite colors...Mom is now knitting on what will be a wrap for her. Thank you Theresa and Robyn; you were(and are) so sweet and welcoming. You made our day. Great place to go to, even if you are new to knitting! I have been the tag a long to a couple of shoppers there, so i am no yarn or knitting expert by any means, but i can assure you that if YOU are someone who is looking to come here, your experience will be great. I'm sure of it. I think any place with amazing staff that helps you & cares about your experience while also being a well stocked / organized store deserves to be reviewed. There is a wonderful kind staff available that can help you with whatever you need. There is a table / counter setup where you can knit & be helped by the staff. They have designed many wonderful pieces there, and have done sweaters of the month & have a fun annual gumball sale you need to see. You should follow them on social media as well to be updated on the latest offers, events, & more! For example, There was a nicely done sweater for a teddy bear that was shared on the sites recently - you'll get to see finished projects like that which is really interesting & well done! read more

Not so: they were so helpful, warm and accomodating, I am now addicted to knitting! I love their selections - it IS like a candy store! I was in Redondo Beach visiting family and decided to visit this LYS. They had a trendsetter trunk show going on and they were super busy. With being so busy, they still were able to take time and help me out and give suggestions for yarn and projects. The lady that helped me was so sweet and nice. I couldn't have asked for better. I was very happy that I stopped in. The only downside I can think of is that they seemed a little more expensive than most LYS I have been to. I don't think it's a big deal because they seem to carry high end/higher quality yarn. I will add that I didn't have a ton of time to check everything out, so I can't speak for the price of all yarns. The price of yarn wouldn't stop me from going there. I live in Houston and am an avid knitter. Looking for a specific yarn on line, more than 50 shops came up. For whatever reason I chose L'Atelier. OMG it was meant to be! That same day the owner, Karen, called me. We ended up chatting, discovered we have more in common than knitting and fabulous yarn, and my experience has been amazing. Karen is writing custom patterns for me from pictures I've sent her (and completely "got" me after the first picture). Her yarns are beyond anything I've ever knit with-to the point that I have unsubscribed from every other store's emails and will only shop with her. The customer service is over the top fabulous. Karen is a woman after my own heart and words can not come close to describing my enthusiasm, comfort level and joy in finding L'Atelier and Karen. If you are a knitter - run - do not walk to her store, or to their web page. I KNOW you will be as over the top thrilled as I am and know I will continue to be! read more

Amazing yarn shop! I have been knitting for 15 years - so I have seen my share of yarn stores over the years. I was traveling with my husband who had a 3 hour business meeting. I spent that time pleasantly surprised and delighted at L'Atelier. I was finishing a baby blanket for my new granddaughter and had one question about how to pick up stitches on the finished edge. Theresa was so kind and eager to help, which was unexpected as I hadn't purchased the yarn there. She had me get the project out of my car and bring it in. She not only answered my question, she gave me several lovely ideas that I hadn't thought of. My blanket grew even more beautiful because of her kindness. I bought a teddy bear there and will wrap it up with the blanket as a welcome to the world gift. Theresa also suggested I could knit a sweater for the bear! I kept feeding the meter and had a fantastic afternoon. It felt like a knitting home away from home! read more

Sorry to say that this store has gone down, down, down. There was time you could come in and take the time to be creative and fondle the yarn. Aren't these a couple of reasons why one will knit? Now the sales staff is all over you as soon as you arrive like a used car salesman! These downsides are the reason why many of us are shopping online and preserving the real reason why a person knits to relax and create. read more

The products in this store deserve 5-stars, the selection is great but sometimes inventory is low. The service deserves 2-stars based on my many experiences. I've been ignored many times while browsing (not a biggie) but another more worthy looking patron deserved attention more than I (that bothered me). After making a purchase one time, I was told, "come by anytime, if you need some help." I did, and then was rudely asked if the yarn I was using was bought there. This particular time I said no and was not so nicely told they can only help if I was using yarn from their shop. I can understand that but the way I was spoken to made me not want to patronize the store again....I generally don't but if I have to get something, I do. I live just down the street and walk by frequently with a sigh and shaking of my head, I suppose you must either look like you have money to burn there or be a WASPy older woman. read more

Friendly atmosphere. I bought yarns from this yarn shop at Stitches West in Santa Clara (I live in the Bay Area) in February. Found out they came from Redondo Beach. We went down to Southern California as my husband went to a conference at El Segundo, so one day I drove to Latelier which was only 5 miles away. I asked if it was all right to just sit and knit with the yarn I bought from them. The shop owner said you are welcome to sit and knit even if you didn't buy yarns from us. One customer just finished the shawl I planned to make, so we chat a bit and I asked her some questions, which got me started on the shawl. I was there about 3 hours, watching ladies come and go, they all knew each other like neighbors. I had to feed the parking meter three times, luckily my husband gave me a pile of quarters he got from a vending machine at a rest stop along highway 5. They even gave me suggestions on where to get lunch. Overall, it was a fun day, I also got more yarns. read more

I have been a member of L'Atelier's yarn club for less than a year. However, it is fabulous. And the savings on gorgeous high-end yarns are significant. I visited the store a few days ago for the first time. It was like walking into heaven! The yarns are amazing in person, the button selection fabulous and the customer service could not have been better. While there were about seven customers either knitting (and needing advice/help) or shopping, Karen and Maureen were responsive and helpful to all. I was picking up a Sweater of the Month kit. However, I began looking through their amazingly large inventory of sample garments and found one I fell in love with. Since it was from 2009, some of the yarn colors had been discontinued. Maureen, however, put together two new options for me and I am certain I am going to love the result. This is a must visit for knitters of all levels! read more

After I read Mari A's review I have to say that I was a little hesitant to visit this store, and went in expecting to be shunned because I was in my jeans and tee shirt...( I hate that kind of stuff) I was pleasantly surprised by the lovely store, the lovely yarns and the warm welcome that I recieved from the staff and even the ladies sitting at the knitting table. They do have some high end yarns, so if you want the cheap stuff you shouldnt be there anyways. I found many yarns that were beautiful and fairly priced. There staff was very personable and helpful even though they were busy on a Saturday morning. They helped me find some yarns that I loved and even offered the patterns at no charge. If you want cheap yarn, these independant shops are not the place to go. But if you want special yarns that inspire you, this is a great place to go. I will definately go back. read more
