What a unique "experience"/restaurant. When my friend suggested meeting at this place, I couldn't understand why we were driving 25 minutes to go here. She knew it because it has an extensive vegan menu on top of the regular one. Once I entered, it all made sense. It's pretty different. I would describe it as part restaurant and part, eclectic, retro, sassy gift/collectibles store. There is clutter, decor, and stuff to buy everywhere you look. Most of it has funny expressions, for example, socks/totes/pillows with quotes. And there's a lot of retro like toys/"stuff" for example mini Rubik's cubes, flower sunglasses, balloon dog keychains, and so much more. You kinda have to see it to totally get the gist, so I'll include a few pictures. As far as the food, we all enjoyed ours. I ordered the lemon blueberry pancakes, which were filled with tons of blueberries and had a nice light lemon taste. They were quite fluffy and enjoyable. I don't know what all of my friends ordered, but they were happy too. I would definitely consider coming back. Took the Mr. out for a birthday brunch, and L.A. Cafe totally delivered. He's a big breakfast guy, and finding a place that serves a solid morning spread and takes food allergies seriously? Rare gem. The vibe inside was bustling but warm -- like the kind of place where everyone's a regular. We came in as a large group (didn't call ahead ), and they still made room for us quickly. The service was incredibly kind and attentive from the moment we sat down. I had the hash brown bowl with corned beef, green peppers, broccoli, and a side of gluten-free toast -- plus lemonade. Portions were generous, food came out hot, and I felt like everything was made with care (though a touch more seasoning wouldn't have hurt). My son and I already have our eyes on the French toast and omelet for next time. My youngest ordered it this time, and yes... I had to sneak a bite. Oh, and the decor? Very disappointed, food was okay other than the bacon was overcooked and it takes forever to get food and "forgetting" half of our order. Plus the staff barely checks on you but you can hear them saying "I cant wait to go home". Worst part was when I was ordering I didnt see matcha on the menu so I asked the girl if they have Matcha.. she responded with yes. So I ordered an iced matcha latte with oatmilk and vanilla. The place is just cool all kinds of weird swag in the doors and cabinets full of things this and that you could pick up why you wait for your table. Then once you get is your table the menu is not the regular two eggs and hash browns, no you get to scrambles whatever they're called here at the LA Cafe no it's cool, total hipster. Get yourself a fancy fufu drink, but it tastes good and the food's good no doubt. You got to love LA Cafe come in because this isn't Coney Island it's a real experience and a real local diner that has some soul. Cute Hippie Vibes, But the Food Falls Short This small, charming spot has a lot of potential with its cute, hippie-inspired decor and cozy, intimate tables. However, the food left much to be desired. I ordered the mushroom burger, which turned out to be a bland, frozen patty with no seasoning--definitely a disappointment. It was a freezer-burned patty so dry and bland with a noticeable off flavor. The texture was tough and chewy, and almost cardboard-like taste. The juiciness and freshness of the meat was definitely lost. While the coffee was decent, the overall experience was underwhelming. I had came in I was waiting about 15 minutes to get seated. Then when I got seated, she took our drink order and then we ordered our food and placed our food. customers came after us mind you they were a full group and we only had three and sat right behind us. Got their food right before us and we were already sitting for about 35 minutes. The lady told us that she thinks our food is coming up mind you it wasn't even on the grill yet. We had talked to the owner no apology no respect not helpful in anyway we asked to get our bill to pay for our drinks three times and the owner continuously told us he can't do that because our food was already on the grill and that we couldn't leave. My burger tasted like fish and it looks like to me that they didn't clean their grill. My wedges were cold and I'm very unsatisfied. I do not recommend this place. read more

This cute, quirky cafe has so much potential. So close to being a four or even five star dining experience. All the right ingredients are present; the mix just needs a little pep and creativity. We stopped on our way home from Indian Springs Metro Park. The reviews piqued our curiosity and the fun murals and silly slogans in view from the windows drew us in. On a Sunday just past noon, given how small the restaurant is, we knew we would be waiting. With only one party ahead of us, the 20-minute wait was fine. There is lots of look at inside as you wait. LOTS of SoCA, Hollywood, retro, stoner, caffeine/loving trinkets. The hostess and servers were friendly and laid back. Definitely a vibe that fit the cafe, yet the downside is it took a very long time to order, wait for our food, pay and be on our way. We didn't track the time it took our order to arrive at our table, but it was lengthy; my husband and I both felt antsy. The cafe is tiny with maybe 10 tables and the help seemed adequate. Not sure what the slow pace was about; the staff just didn't seem too enthused. Interestingly, there's a sign on the door that asks people to not stay more than an hour. With the pace of the service, this might not be an easy task. Our server checked on us once but actually appeared less available as the cafe slowed down. Small gestures, like filling water glasses, were missing. We always chalk these errors up to poor training as the staff seemed kind but naive. The selections on the menu are creative and filled with fresh ingredients. Plant-based eaters will have plenty of options. There were so many choices of sandwiches, burgers, wraps, salads soups and brunch items. Someone put a lot of thought into this menu. The presentation of our food was wonderful, as were the dishes that passed by in their way to adjoining table. My hash brown with three toppings and cheese was piping hot and very tasty. Unfortunately, my husband's Turkey burger and wedgie fries were luke warm. Similarly, our mochas were beautiful and decedent, but not as hot as they should have been. We asked if they made their own Turkey burgers and were told yes; however, fairly sure it was a premade burger as it was bland and a perfectly formed circle. The burger looked wonderful, but tasted bland. Additionally, the homemade slaw was a nice addition to the burger yet it was also very bland. The chips that came with the burger never arrived at our table, but the portions were filling so my husband skipped the chips. The wedgie fries were well seasoned and the dipping sauce was good. My spud creation was appealing, with fresh potatoes and spinach and flavorful due to the choice of flavorful corned beef. The portions are ample and the cost is a good value. We left with a carry out box which will make a nice breakfast tomorrow. With a little more energy, spicy and heat, this cafe would rock it. Such an interesting & unique cafe - I dig it! I would've never thought that there would be a very LA, kitschy, Hollywood themed kind of cafe in the middle of Waterford, Michigan, but enter LA Cafe! Such a fun idea! Being scared shitless by a life-size Elvis cardboard cutout as I walked out of the bathroom aside, this place is filled to the brim (literally) with LA-related decor & you almost feel like you're in one of those touristy gift shops on Hollywood Boulevard as you page through this cafe's impressive menu. There are a TON of vegan options here, which is awesome since I came here with my vegan friend. They've also got all your classic breakfast/lunch diner foods your little heart could hope for. As for me, I got their Huntington sandwich, a grilled chicken melt, which was a bit bland, but still delicious. Glad we checked this place out! From the road, I would've never expected the inside to look the way it did & now I know! :) If you're curious as well, I encourage you to pop in for a quick bite as well! read more

We've driven past this quirky little cafe for 7 years and finally stopped in for breakfast. I'm glad we did but sad we didn't do it sooner! We ordered scrambled eggs with sourdough toast, fruit cup & sides of guacamole & salsa and also the lemon blueberry pancakes. There was a bit of a wait for our food, but our waitress made sure our coffee cups stayed full. The eggs were fluffy & delicious, a tad runny but no big deal. The pancakes were HUGE and soooo good! We ordered a half portion but still couldn't finish it. I love the quirky vibe inside with all kinds of fun items for sale, including lots of tie dye stuff and fun socks. Great little spot that gives 90s diner vibes. A lot of syrup flavors and a bar for parties of one. Quick service. They serve breakfast and lunch. They advertise as vegan friendly but there aren't many breakfast options except carbs. I wish they had an egg substitute or any kind of protein substitute (beyond sausage, just egg, smart bacon). One of my favorite cafes! I've been here multiple times and love it more every time I visit. It's the type of place you can visit by yourself or bring family and friends. I love the menu they offer and the rotating specials. I've never had bad service here and that includes on busy days. Ordered a turkey burger for lunch today. It takes a lot for me to complain about food, but very disappointed to get home and discover I was given a very overcooked turkey burger with burnt cheese on it. It was the texture of a hockey puck. I called the restaurant and was told by the owner that she made it herself and that is how she always prepares it. Really? Overcooked and burnt. I have had food from here many times and am usually satisfied, but had a hard time understanding how that burger left the building prepared the way it was. I absolutely love this place. Think coffee shop with excellent food. Fresh and healthy choices along with many vegan options as well. I'm here multiple times a week and never ever had a bad meal or drink. Laid back and relaxing. The decor is wonderful, fun and eclectic. Plenty of seating. Beautiful outdoor area with seating as well. The owners definitely have personality. Hedi (one of the owners) bakes most of the goods at the restaurant herself. Her blueberry lemon scones are fantastic. That's another reason why I like this establishment. It's a family business. Hedi and her husband Darin own the place but are in the back cooking the food. Their son and daughter also work here. I love supporting small and local family businesses. Service is quick. Food comes out quickly and all the servers are so friendly. We came here based on a co-worker's recommendation and we're glad we did! We were able to break our diets but still eat pretty healthy for breakfast. I loved the choices of having multigrain pancakes or turkey sausage/bacon. I ended up getting way too much food as the pancakes were much larger than I had seen in pictures. I had to take food home...and I never need to get a box. The décor is interesting. Gives you something to look at while you wait for your order. Best coffee in town!!! L.A. Cafe uses quality beans, so they don't have to burn roast them to get flavor like some over priced Seattle based shop does. There are many different flavors and styles of specialty coffee drinks to choose from ( salted caramel latte, chocolate kiss, honey lavender latte and many more) as well as flavored soda drinks and specialty shakes or malts. The food is great and made fresh to order. (Your food isn't sitting in a warming tray getting dried out hoping to be ordered) and the potatoes are fresh cut in the kitchen, not a shipped bag of processed frozen spuds. (So these take a little longer to fully cook). All the soups are homemade (the vegetarian chili and gazpacho are AWESOME!) and the sandwiches are delicious and a good size! The hummus is great, fresh and made from scratch in house. As for "Service" people need to understand, when the place is busy, it's gonna take some time. There is only one cook in the place and it's a small kitchen and again, it's made when you order. So if you have a table of 4, and the place is busy. it may take some time to get all of your orders ready to come out at the same time. Before you leave, I urge you to get one of Heidi's homemade brownies! They are large and delicious!!! (I think the peanut butter brownie is the best!) she also makes all the biscotti, scones, cakes and cheesecake herself too. (Call and order a full cheesecake for your next special event. There are MANY flavors to choose from. They're better and less expensive than the CC Factory) There are several items on the wall and in display cases that feature LOCAL artists work and are for sale. Every June, L.A. Cafe' holds "Peace Fest" art & music festival featuring regional artists who display and sell their works and wares as well as several local music artist who play throught the day. Funky California inspired design. So. 21 minutes for food. So far so good. Look and tastes very good after 2 bites. 21 minutes was not too crazy. I was happily reading the current issue of Metro Times as our 2 year old was drinking chocolate milk and coloring. I never started wondering and looking around anexiously. This is the second time I have ordered breakfast and have been disappointed. I ordered scrambled eggs soft and specifically mentioned almost akin to French-style eggs. Both times the eggs have were served overcooked and thrown out. Despite my objections to overcooked eggs, LA Cafe does make a nice sandwich and the Italian sodas are solid. They serve plain tortilla chips with sandwiches. I wish they had the option of potato chips. Naked tortilla chips are boring! Unhappy about the soups they serve: Vegan tomato bisque or vegan chili. This place was pretty cool. It's fairly small on the inside, but it just gives it a more homey, comfortable feel. I have passed this establishment multiple times in my life, but have never gone until this past weekend. I wasn't disappointed. It's not as if they had the best food ever here, but it was made well, and tasted good. They also have some good coffee and funny coffee mugs. One of the people I came with got a butt mug. The service was okay, as we had to remind our waitress a few times of different things we ordered, but all in all it wasn't a bad experience. I would definitely go again and try some new things. The hummus, no flair at all so bland. I'm so disappointed because the ratings made it sound great. I ordered a veggie egg white omelette and I think it was the worst omelette I have ever tried. I don't recommend the tomato basil, very bland and thin. Vegetarian chili is very good (previous visit). A couple sat down at the next table and were told there was going to be a wait, so they left. Spinach artichoke grilled cheese was good, they serve all sandwiches with tortilla chips. Mulitgrain pancakes were flat and sour and sausage was ok.
