Very nice breakfast joint with a nice retro diner vibe to it. I ended up ordering a Western omelette which was very well cooked, stuffed full of the main ingredients (no skimping here) and was quite tasty. Staff was super friendly with a quick top off of my coffee (which was excellent by the way) and good follow up throughout the meal. Overall good food, at a very reasonable price with great service is hard to beat. Definately a place to check out for breakfast if you are in the area. read more

This place is has fun diner style decor with huge breakfasts, booths and stools. Looks like everyone keeps coming back. Many breakfasts to choose from, we read they whole menu and finally my husband just asked for what he wanted- no problem - he got the breakfast he liked. There are special items- pumpkin pancakes this time! We had eggs, he had French toast, I had potatoes, 4 pieces of thin style crispy bacon and rye toast. Decaf coffee fresh made, thanks for that! I'm not generally a fan of Coney Island restaurants. I find them to be very mediocre. This isn't the case with Mel's Cafe. I walked in skeptical, but left as a fan! Our service was good, and very fast. I had a salad that stands out as my best salad at a coney type restaurant in as long as I can remember. Ordered take out breakfasts for two Saturday morning. I had the eggs Benedict with hash browns... They eggs Benedict entrée was quite good...not the best I ever had but very tasty. the hash brown could've been a little more crispy for my taste.... they may have been more crispy initially but lost some of their crispiness because of the moisture that always seems show up in take out foam packaging. My wife had a cheddar cheese omelette with hashbrowns and whole wheat toast. She thought it was quite good. This little place does a land office breakfast business and was very crowded when I picked up my order... So much so that I felt somewhat at risk for Covid because it was so packed and everybody was talking so loud and projecting their voices so they can hear one another. I did wear my mask which I was thankful for. The bill for the two breakfasts was $20 including a two dollar tip. I would have no problem ordering breakfast again, or trying a lunch, at this restaurant. read more

I cannot say enough about how great the food is, let's just say there is something for everyone, if you like the traditional breakfast or something unique & special you can never go wrong. Now about the atmosphere, when you walk in to Mel's you are always greeted with a welcome and a smile. The waitstaff all work together and the whole place just makes you feel welcome. Also, you get to know everyone there is no turnaround in staff which says a lot about how Mel's is Managed. First time visit - I'm checking out various places to eat since I'm moving to clarkston early next year. Breakfast service was prompt, polite and well done. Food was good- fresh and served hot. Clean accommodations, friendly staff, fairly priced offerings, and good tasting food. These are amongst the requirements in my book for a decent diner and Mel's 2 delivers in each category. It's certainly not dingy, so eliminate the notion of a dive diner. The walls are white and bright with a chrome-looking finished aluminum wainscoting all around giving it, as others have mentioned, a bit of a garage-slash-biker flair to it. I decided to go with their country fried steak. If you are considering this dish, either be very hungry or bring a friend. Picture a standard dinner plate. Now imagine that the entire plate is covered by one perfectly prepared piece of fried steak. Put an amazing gravy on top and then, if you order sunny side up like I did, place three perfectly cooked eggs right on top of that. This structure is exactly how I like to eat my country fried steak, so I was happy as can be. On the negative side of things - the coffee had a strange taste to it. It was as if the water source had to many minerals in it or that the coffee pot was brand new and hadn't been prepped correctly. If you sit at the counter as I did, just be prepared that servers will talk and bicker amongst each other as if they were behind closed doors. If you're uncomfortable with that, get a table and relax and enjoy the food. read more

The kids are happy, it is close by the house and convenient, the food is good and there is a decent variety. Getting out from the congestion of Clarkston village after church is really good for us, and we have found it a nice place to stop quickly on the way out the door. This is a small place decorated in a motorcycle motif which sounds kind of odd (if you arent interested in motorcycles at all) but it definitely works. It gives it a diner sort of feel. They aren't open too late on most days. They mostly serve breakfast which is awesome because its down the road from where we reside so we go there often. The breakfast is really good which it should be because thats all they do! So go try it out! If its not your thing I hear Mel's Grill (the original, also in Clarkston) is pretty good too. read more

Upon arriving you don't expect much from a strip mall diner. Usually a good place to bring the kids and a decent breakfast at a good price is a reasonable expectation. Expect non of these things at Mel's. Having a 10 month old a changing table is helpful in the restroom. I'm willing to overlook this faux pas in a diner if the food is good. It wasn't. I ordered a monte cristo, Usually a specialty item reserved for experienced cooks. It came out about 2 minutes after I ordered it. It was so hot it burned my lips. This is a good indication it was microwaved. The bread and meat were rubbery, The cheese zapped to a creamy mush. I took a few bites begrudgingly. Sometimes it's just what you ordered that might be bad. My husband also was displeased with his food. He swears the spread on his toast was not butter. Also, he ordered pancakes which never arrived. I am not a fan of chain restaurants but please be advised this is not a good example of a tasty independent diner. read more
