The hot chocolates were sooooo gooood! It was the perfect warm and hearty drink choice for a cold and rainy day. We ordered: 1 Milk Chocolate Signature sipping 10/10 1 Dark chocolate signature sipping 8/10 Chic chip cookie 9/10 My husband really enjoyed the dark chocolate and preferred it over the milk chocolate. I personally preferred the milk chocolate, but both were great! It was thick and rich but not overly sweet or too thick to drink. They have small batch chocolates from other countries you can try as well. We arrived later at night so they were already sold out sadly. The chocolate chip cookie was delicious once they warmed it up for us! Pricing: Prices are a bit expensive and the drink sizes or small. The small signature hot chocolate was $7.50 and the medium was $8.50. We went with the medium since it was a better size choice in our opinion. Seating and service: There's not a ton of seating and it's a fairly small shop. You can get drinks, pastries, coffee, tea, and chocolate candy treats. TLDR: Solid chocolate shop with delicious hot chocolate offerings and cookies. My wife really wanted some hot chocolate last night and we happened to be near Georgetown. I found this place on Yelp and decided to bring her for a post dinner hot chocolate. I ordered the dark signature drinking chocolate and my wife ordered the milk chocolate signature drinking chocolate. I personally enjoy dark chocolate more, thus I found my drink to be tastier. My wife does not care much for dark chocolate so she enjoyed hers more. You may want some water after you finish your drink because it's very rich in flavor. Unfortunately they were out of the single source chocolate for the day. I assume that it must be delicious if it's sold out by the end of the day. We also ordered a chocolate walnut cookie, however I believe that she gave us the chocolate raspberry cookie by accident. I was not upset because that was my second choice anyway. The cookie had pockets of nothing but chocolate which, for a chocolate lover like myself, were pure heaven. The place is somewhat cozy feeling and has a decent amount of seating for a store in Georgetown. They care enough about the store to have closed off a bench that had stained upholstery. Thus begins the opening of the infectiously catchy song by Hot Chocolate, but it might as well be an eponymous ode to the beverage that made Burdick's a local Bostonian institution that has now made its way to having a DC outpost in the posh Georgetown neighborhood. For those who think hot chocolate is just a warm version of chocolate milk, a few mere sips will be a potable epiphany that will cast aside such wild aspersions on this sophisticated drinking chocolate. Ordinarily it would suffice t describe an excellent hot chocolate akin to sipping candy or falling into the Willy Wonka chocolate pool like Augustus Gloop, but these sentiments fall way short of the head-flooding euphoria that one experiences upon sipping what was once described by the Aztecs as the "nectar of the gods" when they first stumbled across cacao beans in their conquests and the fact that their leader Montezuma was rumored to have drank up to 50 cups a day. The first sip is always the best with velvety smooth dark chocolate essence that lingers on the tongue with various notes of spice and fruit like a fine red wine. When I feel the need to dial back the intensity or visit during the summer time, I opt to have it served on ice to help mellow out the richness. There are also options for milk drinking chocolate and white drinking chocolate, but I think the added sweetness of either option masks the complexity and nuances of the high quality chocolate. In addition to being a cute intimate space for a post date hangout with a nice array of sweet confections, they also sell single bean source bars for the true chocolate enthusiast and bagged chocolate shavings to make your own at home or to add that distinctive finish to a mocha. My friend and I stopped here on a custom Georgetown exploration day and it was fantastic. We were instantly greeted when we came in and told about the history of this place. Apparently they custom make their chocolates through a long process. They're especially known for their mice chocolates, which my friend and I each bought. They were wonderful! I bought my friend a small chocolate elephant trio for her bday. I would definitely come back to try some of their cookies and other dessert! As it happened we were in Georgetown in the rain when a heatwave finally broke. Rain always makes everything feel cozy, and I happened to walk by Burdock and that was that. I ordered a large drinking chocolate with dark chocolate. It was over $9 after tax which is kind of crazy. It was very good and similar to one I make at home. Glad we stopped in here on our way to our dinner destination. A cute spot with a large selection of drinks and cakes, but also lots of chocolates! The layered coffee cake was pretty good, very similar to tiramisu. My ginger lemon tea was a bit bland, but it's my fault for getting one of the non chocolate drinks. Love the hot chocolate! Usually its a nice and friendly atmosphere but last time I went there it seemed the manager was openly berating her employees. I found it a little uncomfortable because if things are happening in your business, shouldn't that be a conversation outside of customers being in the store? Also she should talk to them with respect not as if they are little kids. It doesn't seem right and I've been coming here for 3 years or so, this is the first time I saw this manager? Good place to stop for dessert or a quick pick me up in Georgetown. Came here for dessert after dinner and got the chocolate mousse cake which looked to be one of their top picks dessert wise. It was pretty good but nothing special. I had a higher expectation bc I recall enjoying the hot chocolate in their Boston location many years ago. Service was good though and the decor had the typical ambiance of a high end chocolatier. Seating in the front and back of the shop so didn't have any trouble finding a spot. I was walking around the Georgetown area when I came across a sign for a match chocolate. Curious as to what that would taste like, I decided to step in and give it a shot. They had a matcha chocolate and a matcha chocolate with mango. I decided to just get the iced matcha with the white chocolate and it was amazing! One of the best drinks I've ever had. The white chocolate was perfectly creamy, while also tasting not too sweet. The matcha was thicker and very smooth. Even my husband who doesn't like matcha enjoyed the drink and ordered an iced milk chocolate drink that was also delicious. I ordered chocolates on Feb 11th and paid for expedited shipping to ensure delivery by Feb 13th (max 16th). The package arrived late on Feb 17th at a hotel, but the recipient had already left the city. I sent two emails prior to delivery warning that the recipient would no longer be at that address, but I received zero response. They ignored my warnings and delivered the package anyway to a location where it cannot be collected. The hanging lights from the ceiling and the aroma of the shop are warming and bring a comforting sit-down vibe. I had one of their infamous hot chocolates paired with a couple of desserts. The pastries were light, with the perfect sweetness, and very flavorful. The staff was well-known for the variety of chocolates offered. Decadent gourmet chocolate, the hot dark chocolate and drinking chocolate and ooey gooey chocolate chip cookies are divine! L.A. Burdick is a great addition to Gtown, there are only 6 locations in the country! There's a small indoor seating area in the back. The decadent Single Source and Dark Hot Chocolate both hit the spot! They taste very similar, the Dark Hot Chocolate is a little sweeter and a blend of chocolate manufactured in the U.S. vs Single Source is international, this month it's from Venezuela. Key difference is that you can only get the Dark Hot Chocolate in the 4 oz mini demo size but not the Single Source Chocolate. The Classic Chocolate Chip Cookie and Raspberry Chocolate Chip Cookies are divine! They get their delicious gooey texture from ganache baked into a ball of dough. When you flip over the cookie, you'll see gobs of chocolate and the cookies are oozing with chocolate with a soft core and crispy edges. The only difference between the 2 cookies is that the Classic has walnuts while the raspberry chocolate has a hint of raspberry, but not overpowering. They are hands-down better than the heavy-weight Levain cookies. Even better, you can ask for a warm cookie and the staff will kindly heat it up for you! The truffles are truly a work of art and meticulously crafted and intricately carved into little milk and white chocolate elephants, mice, Halloween bats, snowmen, and large haunted house - the boutique will leave you in awe and truly a spectacle. The hazelnut Giandoja Ganache Truffle was creamy and tastes like mousse. The slender Raspberry Truffle was fun to try, but not my favorite. The service is stellar! On my birthday, I got a free cookie. Thank you! Don't forget to get a rewards punch card for teas, coffee, and drinking chocolate. They, if course, had chocolates for sale, as well as a variety of cakes, pastries, and hot beverages. I ordered the milk drinking chocolate and a chocolate chip cookie. I expected both items to be good, but they exceeded expectations. The stand out was the customer service, though. I was looking for cute place to have coffee with a friend, and I stumbled across LA Burdick. we both love hot chocolate so we decided to give this place a try. I got the dark hot chocolate and she got the spicy dark hot chocolate. It was perfect! we were both worried that it might be too sweet, but that was not the case. I also like that the pastries were not super sweet, so they complemented really well with dark hot chocolate. Everyone is very friendly, greets you, and happily answers any questions. I had accidentally left one of my AirPods, and to my surprise, the staff had kept it safe! A week later, we were reunited! And to celebrate I got a croissant (not GF) to go and a hazelnut orange cake (GF). my husband claims that croissant reminds him of the ones we ate in Nice this past summer! The space here is so beautiful, with lovely seating options with a great atmosphere. Really want to return to try their dessert options that all look amazing. The plan was for just my friend to order a dark hot chocolate HOWEVER the incredible workers came over and gave me a very small milk hot chocolate on the house because she "couldn't stand seeing me without a drink to enjoy". You can't go wrong with any of the drinking chocolates, hot or cold, dark or milk (white is an option but not my personal fav). They're my favorite I've ever had and I've had a lot??? They use high quality chocolate and have a higher chocolate to milk ratio than your average American hot chocolate, but not as thick as Angelina in Paris or like an Italian sipping chocolate, so you can drink a whole cup without feeling like you have a brick in your stomach. I recently finally tried one of the single source drinking chocolates and it was amazing! Luxurious and decadent without being overpowering. The pastries (croissant-based items) are so buttery and flavorful. I honestly don't like croissants in general (they were even hit or miss in Paris) but Burdick's are consistently amazing. Crunchy and golden on the outside and soft and buttery on the inside. I literally don't understand why Boulangerie Christophe is packed on weekend mornings but Burdick isn't (Christophe is decent and also just has different things, but Burdick is better for croissants and also has their own specialty items). As you can see from my photos, I've come here a LOT. It's a clean, comfortable cafe space. My husband and I come with our toddler regularly around 9 am on the weekend. It's really peaceful at that time and there are fresh croissants. On Sundays, the manager John is there. He is super friendly and looks after regulars well. He takes pride in Burdick's quality and cares about going above and beyond to maintain excellent standards. He makes the best drinking chocolates! We've tried a lot of the cakes and cookies over time. I'd need to write an essay to be thorough. Get whatever catches your eye, it'll all be good. The chocolate truffles make excellent gifts. You can get them in the shape of cute mice or a seasonal animal (currently elephants). They can come in wooden boxes with ribbons. They also sell retail drinking chocolate to make at home. The prices reflect the quality, but it's way cheaper than going to a brunch restaurant or going out for cocktails so you have no excuse not to come. read more

I first went to L.A. Burdick five years ago when on a trip to Boston, and one trip (aka one sip of the dark drinking chocolate) was all it took to make me an instant fan. When I found myself in Boston again a few months ago, it was a non-negotiable pitstop. I had some more drinking chocolate and it was just as velvety and decadent and tasty as I'd remembered. I was lamenting not being able to have more regular access to this deliciousness when I happened upon the discovery that there was now a location in DC! Such a pleasant surprise. Just checked it out and the Georgetown location is wonderful. Excellent-as-always drinking chocolate (my go-to for this and it's unlikely to be topped), yummy pastries (I had the mocha cake and it was rich but very satisfying), and friendly staff. I'll be back the next time I need a fix. P.S. I got lucky when I went (Sunday evening) and only waited for about 10 minutes to get my cuppa, but I hear that the wait can sometimes be as long as 2.5 hours (!!!) on Saturdays and Sundays. Came here around 3 on a Sunday and it was basically empty. The Christmas decor was very pretty in here too. I got the white hot chocolate in small and it was pretty small for $6 but wow - the chocolate was so rich and tasty! You could definitely tell it was high quality here. Definitely a more upscale chocolate place but I think it's worth it for high quality flavour and aesthetic. Need to come again to try some of their actual desserts. read more

As a long-suffering hot chocolate lover in DC, I finally had the brilliant idea of googling where in DC one can find the best hot chocolate. All fingers on reddit pointed to LA Burdick, so I was very excited and cautiously hopeful to head there. The ambience is the DC answer to London's Valerie Pattisserie. Trying to convey a Parisian, luxurious flair. It was surprisingly quiet, few customers, but perhaps it's the location, one beat away from the most crowded commercial corners. Ok to the hot chocolate. It was certainly...very good, in fact (by DC standards) excellent. It was, essentially, milk (though nearly more like a rich yoghurt) with lots of high quality actual-chocolate in it. Very thick, frankly a full-on dessert, such that it would make no sense to have it with a cake. In other words--what it's *not* is a drink with normal hot chocolate consistency and pure cacao. They have two types of hot chocolate, this was the dark type. I don't think the other one would be closer to my Eureka. So again: Kudos for sure, but THE hot chocolate that focuses on the cocoa? The drinking chocolate (get the dark!) is the closest thing I've had to some of the famous Parisian staples a la Angelinas. The pain au chocolat dough was a bit dense, but the chocolate itself was fantastic and folded into the dough in a very unique way. The cafe seating is tucked in the back of the shop away from the storefront, so it's quiet and clean (even on a Saturday morning) with plenty of tables. The prominent sign in front of the shop, as well as most of the reviews on most of the review sites, said this was the place to get a hot chocolate, so I was curious, even having no great need of it on a pleasant night. I ordered a spicy dark chocolate with almond milk, bypassing what looked like some pretty impressive Easter egg collections and cakes. I can see what the crowd was talking about. The hot chocolate truly tasted rich, bitter, and chocolate-y throughout. I was a bit miffed that it wasn't really spicy, but it definitely was a lot more strongly flavored than most. It still was missing an extra accent or kick and was not as good as Sweet Science's hot chocolate, but this place did have the virtue of being open until 8 (at least on the day I stopped by). Service: The person behind the counter was patient as I perused and was knowledgeable about the many different options. We had a misunderstanding about identifying one of the chocolates, and it turned out the signs were on backwards, which they remedied immediately. Food: On entry, there is the chocolate counter on the left, and, walking towards the back, the café counter, which offered drinks and items from their bakery. I got the Copley squares, which came with two stacked pieces of dark chocolate with hazelnut-almond interior, and a Porto Baton, which was dark chocolate with cinnamon, cardamom, and hazelnuts. The chocolate itself did not taste more decadent than others but the smooth texture was pleasant. Ambience: There was some limited seating. I was the only patron upon arrival, so it was rather quiet. Value: The Copley squares, as a double, was more than the Porto Baton, and altogether was $5.70. And while being highlighted there is an honor, I'm sure L.A. Burdick is pleased to know they get the Evan Bolick award for having the best of the best ;-). Technically, what they offer is drinking chocolate - a European-styled type of hot chocolate that is thicker and more intense than hot chocolate. I've had my share of drinking chocolates and I sometimes think they come off as too syrupy in consistency or bitter in taste. Not so here - LA Burdick really nailed the intense chocolatey flavor with a pleasing consistency. I gleefully enjoyed each and every sip of this marvelous drink. I also got some chocolates and pastries. The chocolates look great. I got some chocolate mice and penguins, both of which were expertly crafted. In fact, my daughter refused to eat her penguin for a while because of how cute it was. The mice came with playful ribbon tails that we enjoyed. That said, I didn't think the chocolate tasted as good as it looked (although my complaints are small). The shells were a bit too crunchy compared to the creamy filling, and the flavors (i.e., lemon and almond) overwhelmed the chocolate itself. The chocolate raspberry cake was a big hit with me and my family - a great balance of the chocolate and berry flavors and pleasingly soft. The Hazelnut Orange cake wasn't as big of a hit as the outer chocolate shell was a bit difficult to manage. The store itself is very cool, with lots of epic sweet treats to catch your eye. Came for their hot chocolate and it did not disappoint! You can choose from dark, milk, white and spicy. We went with the milk chocolate. It was so rich and creamy, it was delicious!
