I never knew about this place until my friend suggested it. We went for lunch on a Thursday and it was quite busy. Lots of people doing take out. There is a separate lunch menu you can order from. I had chicken and vegetables from lunch menu. Came with choice of soup (hot & sour or miso). Hot and sour was good. Lots of tables, but just an open, busy place with not alot of ambiance. If you are looking for sushi on the south side of Milwaukee, Kyoto is a must stop. We always order a few of the special rolls plus a couple starters. Greenfield and Titanic our some of our favorites. Gyoza and the edamame are also great ways to start your dining experience. Be warned however. The Rickys Maki comes with a raspberry sauce and maybe mango. Unless you like shrimp and fruit combinations, stay away. It's not clear on the menu that it comes with 2 fruit forward sauces and we were disappointed when this roll came covered in them. On a positive note, the recently expanded dining room and bar area can accommodate your larger parties easier. Service is always attentive without being overbearing. We still enjoy it here and are now taking notes on which rolls to stay away from. read more

This is my go-to take away sushi spot. Clearly they do a ton of take away business/door dash because there were about 10 orders ready on the table as I walked in. I take that as a good sign! I love this 12 piece sushi meal, it lasts me 2 days (I get a few other things as well) and the quality is always spot on. I've been coming here for about 18 years and am not sure what has happened to my once favorite place? Service has really gone down the tubes. We couldn't find our waitress for most of the meal. They expanded the dining room but it was the quietest I've ever heard it during lunch. We always sub an eel and avocado roll for our roll. Normally it's a dollar. The waitress was going to charge us $3. What once was an affordable lunch is now up to &45. For that price we can go to AYCE. read more

Date of visit: March 30, 2024 A friend took us here for dinner as she had raved about it on a visit a couple weeks prior. She warned us that it was very unassuming and not fancy being in a strip mall but that wasn't an issue for us at all; the bigger issue is that we weren't huge fans of the food. Service was very good, staff came by frequently to ensure that we had what we needed, though I would have appreciated a more proactive approach to clearing dirty plates and dishes. Speaking of the dishes, they were quite nice, adorned with the restaurant's name and logo, a nice touch that I would not have expected from such an establishment. Turning to the food, the miso soup was nothing to write home about. It certainly wasn't bad, but it also wasn't the least bit memorable. I also was a bit underwhelmed by the green tea (both of these items made my nostalgic for the Yen Ching of old!) that they served. I am a big fan of crab rangoon but they put onions in it here, which was odd and disconcerting, I have never experienced this. Scallions, of course, but not plain onions. Thumbs down on that one. A highlight was the Orange Chicken! A wonderful, crispy shell protected a moist, succulent chicken breast that was good the first night and nearly as tasty a couple days later for lunch! read more

I heard a lot of good reviews about this restaurant, so I wanted to give it a try! I ordered the sweet potato roll, unagi and avocado, and a dynamite roll. Everything was just ok. my favaorite was the eel and avocado, but the others fell short. The sweet potato roll wasn't rolled tight so it was too big to fit into my mouth, making it hard to eat. The dynamite roll was okay but as I was eating it tasted a bit fishy. I have eaten at Kyoto dozens of times and have never had any issues. I have eaten at many sushi restaurants in the Milwaukee area. There are several good ones, but Kyoto is my favorite! The sushi is fresh and there are many options. The all-you-can-eat option on Mondays and Tuesdays is probably my favorite! They added on within the last year and took over the next section to them in their strip mall. They put in a bar with a couple of tvs with nice bar stools. We appreciated the ability to have multiple checks, though our orders got mixed up throughout or certain items were forgotten entirely. In terms of food, I got the sushi and sashimi dinner. The sushi rice was slightly overcooked and was underseasoned. The fish, particularly the maguro (tuna), could be fresher. Overall, the sushi photographs better than it tastes. However, the dishes from the kitchen were flavorful, properly cooked, and pipping hot! Finally, the drinks are alright, but the bubble tea tastes artificial. Also, it's worth noting that some of the prices on their print menus are not accurate. Particularly, it looks like they raised the prices on their bottles of sake, but the menus don't reflect the changes. read more

I am usually a big fan of Kyoto and always order for at home takeout and recently for work meetings and functions. I have had a few encounters with minor issues. However, I am sad to say that I will not be ordering from them going forward. I ordered a team lunch last week and it had a variety of options including sushi, fried rice, apps and more. 4 out of the 6 people that ate the lunch unfortunately contracted food poisoning, with one of my team members opening his sashimi packet and instantly could smell that the fish was not safe to eat. Came here with my gf for a Friday night date night. Place was hopping so for my first time being here I knew it was a good choice by my girlfriend. There is a lot to choose on the menu so it may take a while bc other plates looked great but I didn't exactly know what everything was. If you get sushi rolls, you will definitely get more food than most Japanese restaurants. The people getting their sushi all looked pleased. I got the Chicken Tempura Udon. It was great bc the chicken came on the side so it doesn't get soggy. You get a great size chicken tempura that is not basic American Asian fried chicken like you could get anywhere. Also came with some tempura veggies which was great. Also came with a nice side salad that was just enough to be a great start. My girlfriend got one of the double combos with sushi & sashimi. It looked good & healthy but it is more expensive than the regular meals, but still very reasonable priced ($20). Two great meals for only $35 is amazing at a Japanese restaurant. Only suggestion is that there aren't pictures on the menus since majority of customers have to search on their phone what some things may be. The Udon noodles were great choice for a winter night bc it essentially was noodles & miso soup. They were not heavy & neither was the chicken despite it being battered. I have been driving past this place forever and it's even a forever book mark and I have even shopped the strip mall it's in but I have never stopped until today. The place is in a strip mall with plenty of parking which is nice. They have a daily specials board as you walk in which I wouldn't do because I was on a mission to get shrimp/vegetable tempura and a rainbow roll. The place was hopping at 12:30 on a Sunday and just about every table filled up while I was there, must be decent. The place is boring semi modern looking from 20 years back with booths and tables. Unfortunately this sushi place doesn't offer my favorite, fried calamari. Service is what you expect for like ever table in service and I ordered the shrimp/vegetable tempura and a rainbow roll which was crabmeat, cucumber, avocado inside with tuna, salmon, white fish and tobiko on top, tobiko is basically caviar small fish eggs. My food actually came quicker than I expected for how busy they were and looked spectacular. The shrimp tempura was very good with mixed vegetables which probably changes with availability. The vegetables had a nice thin crispy tempura batter while the shrimp had panko/crumb looking batter that was crunchy and good. The rainbow roll was also very good with fresh fish and avocado and it's basically 4 different rolls with 2 pieces of each. Overall my lunch was very good and I can see why they were packed and the service wasn't bad either for how busy it was so I left a 36% tip because she deserved it. read more

As a regular customer of Kyoto, we were STRONLY DISAPPOINTED to discover they added forced tipping to their menu. We only had 4 adults at our table, and a 4 year old child, who just shared a plate since she doesn't eat much. What made us suspicious when we were seated, we requested a booth and they put us at a table. Then it took about 10-15 minutes before someone took our order, my tea was refilled only once, and that took quite awhile. It has always been our experience when tips are automatically charged, customers get screwed. This is what happened this evening. We don't normally patronize places that surcharge, nickel and dime, their guests with forced tipping, service charges or fees for using a credit card. This is the end of a long term dining experience. read more

Kyoto is one of my favorite places to eat! It has been for years! Not only do they have amazing sushi, they have amazing Chinese food. I'd say the best in the area with reasonable prices. Tonight we ordered vegetable fried rice, chicken lo mein, beef and broccoli, a spicy salmon roll, edamame, and goyza. The goyza is a traditional Japanese dumpling (think potsticker). They're pan fried versus steamed. Husband always orders them. They're a staple in every order. The edamame was tender and yet firm. They require a little salt as they don't come salted. I prefer to add my own salt, so I don't mind. The entrees were piping hot even with delivery. The vegetables were cooked to perfection; not over or under cooked. We asked them to make the beef extra spicy and it was definitely made to order. That's an option for all of their dishes. The flavors are so good; not too salty at all. There is always more than enough for leftovers and the containers they come in are worth keeping. Lastly, I love their sushi! The fish is always fresh. I've yet to be disappointed. My favorite roll is the Greenfield Special Maki although this time I ordered the spicy salmon roll. The only reason was calorie based. Salmon was flavorful with just the right amount of spicy. Come here over lunch. Their lunch prices are fabulous! Similar places downtown Milwaukee are much more expensive and their fish isn't as tasty. Give this place a try! read more
