I am very particular about my Sandwiches, but this place has some unconventional stuff that I normally might not get out and search for in your average deli. It's convenient to have it in somewhat of a grocery store. Because you can always grab other goodies like beer or other assorted beverages while you wait, which is rarely more than 2-3 minutes. They also have a Free Wifi signal over from Umai. I'm partial to the half Turkey Muffaletta's, but I have them use only deli turkey instead of the pastrami. I also love the Hey Zeus wrap, but I skip the mayo, mustard, onions and peppers. I have issues with certain foods and condiments, so shush it. Hard Spot to pick out as a sandwich shop but its right across the street from the Blue Monkey. And had someone not recommended it to me, I would have continued to assume it was merely a grocery store. read more

Best Dive in Memphis in my opinion. The owners are Greek and Korean (Husband and Wife) and they've combined their cuisines to make a unique flavor that's most excellent. For your first time, you should definitely order the Bi Bin Bop. I think it's the first thing on their menu. Please bear in mind that the place doesn't look like much. The Bi Bim Bop Burger is so crazy. It's a regular burger with a fried egg and spicy Korean sauce with stir-fry vegetables. If you want something weird but yummy, give it a try! My usual order is either the Veggie Delight or the Falafel, and both are satisfying to my vegetarian palette. Ordering is interesting: you go to the back where they make the food, the menu hangs above it, and you order there and wait for it. You can grab a drink and chips and sit down at one of the many tables or at the bar that faces out to Madison Ave. You pay either before or after you eat. Korean noodles: do not recommend. It was way too salty for me and tasted like ramen noodle packets plus a ton more sodium. Parking lot is very small, but there always seem to be a spot. If you can't find parking, you can always find street parking nearby. The place itself is more like a convenient store with a deli inside. I would give it 4 stars because you'll have to wait a while if there's more than a couple people ordering (they usually only have one employee making food) but I'm adding an extra because of how good the stuff tastes once you get it. I am giving this place 5 stars based on one item on the menu: the Turk. This sandwich is amazing, the way it's crisped and molded together to where all the meats, herb blends, and cheeses form this new flavor combination is what make this my favorite sandwich in the city. I also like to order it without mustard, lettuce, and onions and with light tomato. I like to post it with some funky fusion crispy chips and a sparkling lemon water. This is what a lunch is supposed to taste like. The downside of ordering the Turk is that there may be a wait, especially around lunch (no more than 20 minutes) and if they get your individual order wrong they give you grief about it....but all in all it is worth it for this delicious sandwich. read more

Great food, horrible service! If the service was better, I would have given a sold 4, maybe even a 5! We stood there for almost 5 minutes before anyone even acknowledged us. "Be with you in a moment" would have been more than sufficient, that's the professional and courteous thing to do- and that's in any business! None of the items were priced, which is very annoying. I was there having a late lunch with my husband- he had a gyro and I had the stir fry, also we each got a side, some chips and a drink... the total came to $61 and some change. I asked for an itemized receipt and then the guy rang it all up again. The new total, $47 and change. This guy was not at all friendly or welcoming- I had previously asked him a question about a menu item, he mumbled something and was anything but helpful. All I could think is that he really didn't want to be at work or maybe he was just unhappy working there at all! I mean zero personality- no "hello" "welcome" "thank you" or ANYTHING. When asking again about an itemized receipt, he said he could write it all out for me. Really?! Like I would've done that to the two people waiting in line behind us. Never! I did, however, state that it would be nice if all of the items were priced. He defensively responded and stated "this is my mother-in-laws place, a family owned business." I thought ok, and?!? Honestly, what the hell does that have to do with anything? There are plenty of family owned businesses that price their items!! Is it really that hard to get a sharpie and write the price on the item? Or to make a sign? okay as Ethnic food of all stripes calls to me like a siren song...and as I actually had a taste for Korean a few weeks ago (yep...I am liable to have a "taste" for almost ANYTHING....side effect of growing up in a city and going to a high school with every nationality under the sun...but I digress) being new in town I wasn't sure there was actually any GOOD Korean in Memphis. Having most recently lived in Chicago's Koreatown...I am pretty picky about the quality of my Korean food. I love Korean BBQ more than life itself but I had a hankering for one thing and one thing only...the Bibimbap. I wanted that sizzling, spicy, crispy, curnchy, parade of flavors to party in my mouth. So as I have done with everything else since I moved to Memphis I turned to my new besties here at Memphis yelp to guide me to the Bibimbap promised land. So Kwik Check came up...I promptly hoped in my vehicle put the address in my GPS (since I still occasionly get lost) and headed over. I was parked outside for a minute looking slightly confused. I am never against a hole in the wall place, but this place seriously confused me. Was it a bootleg 7-Eleven/Liquor store combo or a restaurant. I had my doubts, but forged ahead knowing that my fellow Memphis yelpers would NOT every steer me wrong. I was reading the menu and even more confused by the combination of things on the menus. The Gyros looked pretty good...but darn my ADD...focus...you came for bibimbap. Ordered at the counter...got my drinks and waited. The object of my affection came out in all its sizzling glory a few short minutes later. All I can say is OMG!!...I have been eating Bibimbap since one of my Koren friends introduced me to them in HS. This one was unique, different, satisfying and completely awesome. I usually like to let mine sit undisturbed and sizzle for a bit before stiring things together...this maximized those crispy rice bits (there is a name for them but I forget it) at the bottom and give you that crunch. What can I say flavorwise it is just a VERY balanced meal. the spicy, and umami flavors are there along with a little salty, and sweet (from the apple) and sour (at least with the Kimchee I added). Eating this dish is like giving yourself a hug from the inside. Seriously one of the best I have had. I started humming and singing my happy food song and I would have got up and done my happy food dance but I didn't want to scare anybody. I have since been there 3 more times (yes I am a bit obsessed) and each time I say I will try something different like the Mufeletta but I just cant bring myself to go there and NOT order my beloved Bibimbap The only reason I am knocking this place down a star is because they dont serve that mixture of the little freepickled veggies and things(I think they call them banchan) that I am used to in Korean restaurants...and seriously what Korean restaurant charges you extra for Kimchee? I stood at the ordering counter for five minutes like I was invisible feeling stupid. No one took my order. No one gave any acknowledgement of my presence. There were at least two guys and a girl working. No one told me, "I will be with you shortly," or anything like that. After standing there awkwardly feeling stupid for a while, I finally have to exert myself, and call for attention. I raised my hand and called the taller gentleman with a bread and a man bun with glasses on. I said, "excuse me" He said, "I am busy." At that point I already wanted to walk out thinking that wow you are too busy for my business? I ended up staying for that one time thinking I will put up with this just for today and I will just grab a quick bite to eat and go back to work. I just don't feel like going to my car again and elsewhere and I might have to wait again. Service here sucks but this is my last time. Fast forward... when time comes for me to pay, the same guy, the taller, white, guy with glasses with facial hair with a man bun, wanted to charge me for a bottle water I did not buy. I sat at a table that they still hadn't cleaned up. Table wasn't dirty other than the empty water bottle still on the table. I picked that table because It was closer to the window with more sunlight. The guy wanted to put that bottle water I did not buy on me. I told him that I didn't buy that water, and I didn't drink a drop of water from that bottle. The guy insisted that I did. I told him that the bottle water was the pervious customer's who used that table and you guys hadn't cleaned that table. He still insisted to put that water on me. I finally lost it and had to raised my voice. He and another guy working there kept telling me that the bottle water was mine and they talked to me in a condescending way. That was by far the shittiest service and restaurant experience I have ever had. If they have security camera there, I dare them to check on the security camera and see If it was me who took that bottle of water and how long I stood in front of that ordering counter. If I took that bottle water out of the fridge, they should file a police report and get me arrested. If what I wrote is true, this place has the absolutely shittiest service in the whole wide world. What a Lovely dive this place is. From the lack of parking, to the lack of good air conditioning, to the waiting in line for service and bare minimum in seating this place would be considered by 99% of folks a DUMP! I say, "Perfect" and more parking for me, less folks just sitting around causing the heat to rise, maybe an open table for me to sit at with out the usual wait, and the under appreciated cook/waiter/counter attendent/bus boy/chief dish washer person can take my order for some of the "BEST DARN FOOD" I've ever found in the midtown area. OMG, Holy Cow, Slap me silly....This place is perfect with all of its cosmetic flaws because the price and quality of food never fails to under promise and always over deliver. I've had the Muffaletta (with extra meat & see my pic of it to believe how big it is) and by far its the best in Memphis, and probably the best Muffaletta north of the BIG EASY. The Bi Bim Bop is a heavily dish and must be tried by all who come to the Kwik Check. I've never had anything like this, but will forever be on the quest for more Bi Bim Bop. The Gyro is as good as any in Memphis, and is served with fresh cucumber dressing like no other Gyro place has that I've found. The employees must love working here, because they are masters of their art of creating taste bud memories that will last a lifetime. If your a true foodie, then welcome one and all to the Kwik Check, but if your looking for standard trappings and comforts of a Chain food place then drive on down to the nearest KFC. read more

Heard so much hype about this place from friends since moving to Memphis, and I have to say I was not very impressed. I'm not bothered by the somewhat casual/divey atmosphere, and actually tend to like that vibe. The cashier seemed absolutely miserable, which I understand - everyone has bad days. The food took a long time to come out, but I don't mind waiting for fresh, delicious food. The price was $10 for a tiny portion of bi bim bop, and it was not even warm when it came out. I'm used to being on the road, and convenience store food has always been the same thing... Maybe some chicken tenders, or a burger, but nothing you would actually want to eat (unless they have a major fast food joint attached). But then I move to Memphis and suddenly every single convenience store and gas station has a full-on legit kitchen with all kinds of food. I don't think I can properly explain just how strange this phenomenon is to me. So strange that any time I'm tempted to try food that really looks so good, the fact that it's coming from a convenience store stops me. But tonight I broke down. And I figured, after reading the reviews, this would be the place to break down at. I read through the entire menu, but settled on the regular muffaletta since it seemed like the sandwich to get here. I asked how big the sandwich was, since, even though everyone raves about how big this sandwich is, the photos always make it look so small, and I'm a pretty big eater. But believe me when say this thing is the largest sandwich you will ever eat, if you get the whole. I got the half and definitely could have downed another quarter, but there's no way I could have gotten through a whole. It took a while to cook, but by the time I got home and unwrapped it, it was so worth it. Ham, salami, provolone, olive goodness, tomatoes, and who knows what else, all surrounded by a toasted bread that, surprisingly, didn't turn to a soggy wet mess, which alone is worth five stars. Definitely one of the best sandwiches I've had in a few years. The staff was pretty great, too. The guy behind the kitchen counter was just generally nice, and the woman up front and I talked about making hummus for a few minutes. So, a Persian guy, Chinese woman, and two kids walk into a former gas station.... No, it's not a joke, but just as unexpected as a good punchline. You see, as you may expect, this former gas station was turned into a counter-service deli by a Korean family, so naturally they serve ..... Gyros? What? And GOOD gyros too! Of course, they also have dol sot Bi Bim Bop, which is a great value as it's a huge sizzling bowl for $9.95. But don't be fooled by the "beef shish kabob." It's just Bulgolgi with some peppers added in. That's not a bad thing, as the Korean-style grilled beef is served over rice and delicious. But kabob it's most certainly not. They show amazing trust of their patrons, considering it's Memphis. You order, eat, then go up with no ticket and tell a different person what you ate and then pay. Plenty of people have given stellar reviews for this place, so this will be another 'instructional review': - Park in their tiny lot or on S Morrison St. - Walk in... yes, it feels and looks like an awkward empty convenience store - Go up to the deli counter, and look up above on the wall to the menu - Order: Beef bibimbap, and potstickers for an app(Mandou) ... as a variation: Pajeon - Grab a beverage from the coolers (yes, you can take a single beer of any option) - Sit down at a table... maybe grab a Memphis Flyer... start the crossword - Receive your potstickers and eat ... mmmm - Receive your bibimbap ... how to prep bibimbap: 1) Don't touch the dolsot (aka "hot pot" for a reason), 2) Mix all that stuff up, like crazy, 3) Push everything up against the edge of the bowl, so it's like a 'liner' of the hot pot, and watch/smell it cook for just a couple minutes - Eat your bibimbap... chop sticks will work now that you've been able to get a nice cooked 'crunchiness' on the bowl side, and the egg has cooked - Continue crossword... "Hmm... 5-letter word for 'iridescent gems'... what the...?" - Finish bibimbap, and leave the mess at the table - Walk up to the register, and tell the nice lady "I had a beer, dumplings, and beef bibimbap" - Pay the nice lady - Go home and write a review about your experience on Yelp Pretty straightforward. When I lived in NYC, I enjoyed a Cuban-Chinese restaurant on the Upper West Side. Memphis has a diverse ethnic mashup at Kwik Chek (correct spelling). It's a Mediterranean-Korean place with hot foods like Bi Bim Bop, Shish Kabob, Mousaka, Korean noodle soup; and a nice array of sandwiches ranging from the best Mullaletta's this side of NOLA, clubs, Reubens, veggie delight, and the winner for best sandwich name- My Feta Smells Good. Service is across the counter, although there is seating available and beverages in the cooler. Service is a bit slow, but the delicious food makes up for any wait. Try anything on the menu. You won't be disappointed. Midtown is especially lucky to have Kwik Chek and Memphis' primo deli, Fino's within an easy walk of each other on Madison Ave. So sandwich at one and walk to the other for dessert. And Camy's is in between... Fast food paradise in just a couple of blocks. read more

I had heard good things about Kwik Chek, so I was excited to try it out. I came away very disappointed. My girlfriend and I each ordered bibimbop, which took quite a while to come out of the kitchen. This did not bother me in itself as I had heard the bibimbop was great and don't mind waiting for a fresh, delicious meal. However, when the bibimbop did come out it did not meet my expectations. It was lukewarm and mostly rice, and not very flavorful. It tasted okay, but given the price and it's local reputation, I feel it was very overrated. There are better, cheaper local options. I decided to step out the box a little and try something new. New city, new food why the heck not!? I'm so glad I took a chance on this place. I had the Bi Bim Bop with beef which was delicious! Lil spicy but I really liked it. The portion was just enough which I prefer. Don't get me wrong I'm big on leftovers but sometimes it's nice to order, eat, finish and just be satisfied. Bottom Line: Definitely need to try the Bibimbap Burger As a Korean, I'm not sure why I never thought of making this delightful concoction, but Kwik Check sure made it count. They put bibimbap (a Korean dish consisting of rice, beef, bean sprout, fried egg and other vegetables) in a hamburger. The beef patty was cooked to a nice medium. The combination of the two was outstanding. It didn't taste Korean or American. It was very Korican or Ameriean. I'm not sure, but it was outstanding! I didn't try the other dishes but I would bet it would all be worth a try. The establishment is set up more like a liquor store, but there's a food counter at the back of the store where you order food and then pay at the cash register. The other reviews should give you a hint that this place is a must if you're visiting Memphis. Now, why you should visit Memphis is a whole other topic as I didn't enjoy my time there.
