I went into Kupel's today to buy a few things. The whole staff had various protective gear including gloves. The person who took my order was very good and she changed her gloves twice especially after handling money. I was surprised to see the owner in the white shirt and the manager counting money without gloves. The manager (gray shirt) did not wash his hands or use sanitizer afterwards. Very unappetizing especially from management. You would think with the coronavirus going around he would be more careful especially being the manager. read more

So i'm not much of a bagel connoisseur but i had a pretty solid experience here. Came in mid afternoon the other day while killing some time before meeting a friend and was in serious need of feeding myself. I decided on a plain bagel with lox and cream cheese. Was really pleased with the amount and quality of fish. The scallion cream cheese was delicious and i had to hold myself back to keep from licking my fingers in public. Also, they have like 87 different flavors of cream cheese. 8-9$ for a delicious meal that kept me full the rest of the day seems totally reasonable. read more

The local place that only local people know how tasty baked-goods is. A place doesn't have fancy interior designs, big windows to see through it, nor indie music playing while you eat in the store. The only thing they have, and always, is a dozen baskets of baked-goods. When I visited Kupel's in the first time, I ordered California bagel w/ tofu lox (I am a salmon lover!), and a cup of latte. I ate in the store, watching people come and go. They usually left with at least two bags of their goods, pastries, cookies, bagels, and fancy breads. You can tell they are frequent customers because they know exactly what they what to order in a second. After finishing my bagel, I can't help to line up and order a half-dozen bagels to go. Still now, every time I go to Kupel's, I will order one to eat freshly right there and take more out for the next few days. read more

I heard how Kupel has been around for a long time and their bagels are great. So today, I passed by and decided to try it. I got a dozen bagels ($16) with cream cheeses ($6-8/lb.). Honey walnut cream cheese tastes stale to me and the plain is pretty tasteless. Bagels are just ok. I toasted two. The plain one is very dense while the everything is fluffier but rather dry and dull inside. I like some chew but this was a bit much. Highly disappointing. read more

Kupel's is definitely known for their bagels. I have to say, they're totally delicious and worth waiting for on a Sunday morning. They have a good variety of both bagels and spreads. They also don't skimp on the spreads and will put a generous dollop of cream cheese on there. They have vegan spreads which is a nice addition. Along with their bagels, they have pastries. I highly recommend their half moon cookies (basically a black and white cookies, but with frosting instead of the glaze). The staff are friendly and work to get you your order quickly. The only negative I would say is there is limited seating on the inside. They have cute small tables outside, which is really nice for a summer breakfast. I wouldn't say these are the BEST bagels, but they are pretty yummy (as noted by the amount of people willing to wait in line on a Sunday morning) and they have plenty of options. Definitely not the most organized as the line kind of randomly loops inside, they call your name out for your order, and it you sit in the few tables inside, it won't be the most comfortable with people waiting around you. I got the Bellevue bagel sandwich, which is pricier since it comes with nova lox and lox spread, but they give you a TON of lox so that made me happy. (Can you tell I love lox?!) They have fun names for the sandwiches that all are different T stops like South station , Prudential, Back Bay, Longwood, etc. While most options are for their variety of cream cheese and bagels, they also have other breakfast baked goods like danishes, croissants, muffins, breads, etc. read more

So, I am finally just getting around to this update, but I am knocking a star off my original review for a scary experience I had with Kupel's bagels back in March. It was right around St. Patrick's Day and I don't know, maybe they had some left over festive St. Patrick's Day green batter that some how made its way into a pumpernickel bagel (that's what I'd like to think), but I sliced open my big, beautiful pumpernickel bagel, to find a large section of GREEN. Now, I am just going to go along with the St. Patrick's Day green batter theory (maybe someone's half Irish or something) but I also must entertain the frightening thought that this was (gasp) MOLD in the bagel. So, ever since then, I've been a little traumatized and have been avoiding Kupels and favoring the asiago cheese bagels at Panera. I do still really like their bagels... sans green stuff. If this review was only for food, I'd give it a 4. However, due to the total confusion of the customers and staff while I was there, this is dropping to a 3. I tried a variety of pastries, some better than others, but the frozen dough thing - fabulous! The service was so strange, though. There was a woman in front of us who had sampled a bunch of items, but apparently hadn't ordered. This was learned after we were asked for our order, and the woman started yelling at the girl behind the counter (and us)...not sure who was helping her with the samples, but it seems that would constitute being helped.... When we finally got to order, the person we ordered from was confused and didn't add all of our items to the order. Then, when she forgot things, instead of adding them, she kept asking if we still wanted them. Of course we wanted them - we ordered them! So, while I might stop in for pastries (ok, probably will), I have a bad taste in my mouth from the service. It stopped me from going back in a second time while in the area and visited a stop down the way instead. However, I'm sure I'll give it another try...sometime.... read more

Having lived in NYC my whole life prior to college (and still traveling back home here and there), I never did have a bagel quite like the ones here. I know there are plenty of places that offer various savory bagels but a good ol' plain or cinnamon raisin with a heaping amount of cream cheese (mmm, I LOVE cream cheese) is my typical NYC-style bagel go to. After reading various reviews here saying this is one of the best bagels in Boston, I knew I had to try it... and I waited way too long to do so! Walking in, I noticed a big selection of baked goods. How fresh they are, I'm not too sure but some of them did look a little old to me. Pass. The sandwich menu doe. My bf and I stood there for a solid 10 minutes trying to figure out what to get. Actually, it was mostly me because he knew he wanted to get something with lox and he quickly chose the Lechmere. After many err's, but's, and I don't know's, I chose the Reservoir for myself. The sandwiches - you get the option of a bagel (toasted, if you like) or some sort of roll. The two that we got were HUGEEE. Definitely filled us up for our late breakfast and we ended up skipping lunch. The ones we got weren't exactly ones you'd want to save either so we ate it all in one sitting, but it was (deliciously) tough. - Lechmere: everything bagel toasted with garlic and herb cream cheese, Nova lox, tomatoes, and capers. The cream cheese was abundant as I like and the lox was hefty. Kind of pricey at $10 (or $9.99) but it is salmon and it did come with a bottle of water (free with all fish sandwiches only, for some reason). As delicious as this is, it is still pricey so I'd only get this as a treat every once in a blue moon. - Reservoir: garlic bagel toasted with egg salad, slice of cheese, and tomatoes. I saw the lady pack on 2 heaping scoops of egg salad and my eyes instantly lit up LOL. This was sooo good too and I believe this was either $5 or $6. Also kind of pricey for a bagel but so worth for the amount you get. I'm honestly glad this place isn't within walking distance from me because I think my depleting bank account will go into the negatives if it was. I will definitely have to come back some other time to try to sweeter bagels/cream cheeses. Oy! These reviews! No seriously, complaining about deli's is a long loved tradition, but not needed here. You place the order, you get a bagel & cream cheese w/ tons of stuff on it and then magic. Yeah, I know- it takes a while, yeah I know the rising price of dairy/wheat sucks. But I will wait for good food; I will pay for good food. I go into some "doughnut' shops" that supposedly offer the "bagel w/ stuff" and get offered an "oreo® chocolate coffee blaster", I won't name this large chain doughnut' shop focused around the Dunking of things into coffee... You order a bagel with cream cheese and get a Styrofoam disk with a puck of Sysco® cream cheese you could patch dry wall with that is not even applied to the disk. You struggle; cursing who ever invented flimsy plastic knives and question your existence, shouting into the bleak abyss as 60's Vietnam war anthems play somber into the void of good bagel shops. You ask where have all the bagels gone... Kupel's, that's where the good bagels are. Oh also the coffee is jet fuel and ya know, tastes like coffee, if your into that. But no they don't have Snickers® caramel Funyun® mocha zazz or quickly pre-fabricated pre-sliced ikea bagels that take 3.76 seconds to slap in a paper bag. Good things. Not a great experience today, my wife trying to enjoy a tasteless sesame onion bagel with chive cream cheese and myself a raspberry rugelach that didn't even have any taste of raspberry to speak of but instead a filling that had a distinct chemical taste. Kupel's is one of the best bagel places in the Boston area. Sitting in the small Jewish community of Brookline, Kupel's is serving up fresh bagels, breads, and bagel-sandwiches that are a treat to eat! The location had scaffolding around it the last time I went, though the soon-to-be-improved appearance does not take away from Kupel's charm. This is not a sit-down-with-service restaurant, it's a walk-in-and-take-out bagel shop with seating. I usually come here on either Tuesdays or Fridays around 12pm-2pm. I have never experienced a line of more than three people, nor have I had bad customer service. However, Kupel's does not operate as fast as other breakfast/pastry places I have been to before. Their customer service is average. The people behind the counter do have a smile on their face but do not go out of their way to make you feel more comfortable. Rather, members of the Jewish community greet one another and have been friendly to me as well. Jewish holidays tend to liven up Kupel's, with a rabbi coming to greet everyone in the store. Regardless, their assortment of cream cheeses, bagels, and other toppings are fantastic. Every sandwich is named after a T stop, which I find funny, and comes with a bottle of water for around $9. The best sandwich is the Lechmere (Garlic and Herb Cream Cheese, Nova Lox, Tomato, Capers). All of the ingredients taste fresh, the lox are great, and there is a good amount of cream cheese on both sides of the bagel. NOTE: If you're a college student and you have proof of identification from your university, you get 10% your order, which I use to the fullest and is one reason why I come back here so often! TL;DR: A cute little bagel shop with decently priced, fresh bagel-sandwiches that are worth trying. Student discount if you ask. I will return! read more

They're closed on Saturday but every Sunday they're open early and there's always a line of devoted customers coming in to grab their bagels for the week! I love love Kupel's bagels. One of the sole places in Boston I can rely on for a consistent taste, size, shape and quality of a bagel. They also have many other savory baked treats. Their signature Challah bread is Jewish grandfather approved. I always go for their sandwiches, which are less of the gourmet hipster concoction and based on great quality comfort food. They also put like a pound of lox on the bagel - huge yes. The only downside with Kupel's in going at the right time. Brookline-ians know this is an amazing place and the line normally (somehow) wraps around the tiny store on weekends (sunday only- Sabbath observed) and breakfast times on the way to work. Definitely worth the 20 minute wait if you have the time, but during these times expect to get to-go read more

This place seems to have plenty of people working here, but none are actually helping customers. There was a line of 15 people and only one worker was taking orders. Meanwhile, there was a revolving door of people coming out front from the back room, but then would scurry back when they saw the line. I assume maybe they are there to make more bagels- but what is the point of making more bagels if you can't sell the ones in the bin already? Three people in line got so frustrated they walked out. It shouldn't take 25 minutes to get one bagel with cream cheese, and this was on a weekday too. I would hate to see what weekends are like in this place. read more

Was in the area briefly after hitting a great Asian takeout. Bagel World is my standard bearer for bagels in Massachusetts. Was hoping to get a bagel with pastrami, they don't serve it. not sure if most bagel shops serve pastrami, as i say i generally stick to BW. Got the garlic bagel w/ veggie creme cheese and onion bagel w/ plain creme cheese. The verdict: disappointing, Bagel World still better. So I had the Cleveland circle sandwich on an everything bagel and tried a pumpernickel bagel with jalapeño cream cheese. Both were good but not great. The bagels were slightly doughy and heavy for me. The pumpernickel was bland and the everything would be better named "a few things" with a lack of toppings. The jalapeño cream cheese was delicious! The cleaveland circle sandwich was good but between the doughy bagel, the salty lox, plain cream cheese - this sandwich felt very heavy and lacked any light or acidic characteristics. I also felt that the lox were a bit bland which is disappointing because you spend the extra money for them. I think a few of their bagels, cream cheese spreads, and sandwiches are probably delicious and if I go back to try it again, Ill be excited. But I did not find that anything I ate stood out as delicious or unique. read more

Though their menu is expansive, the thing to get is a sandwich on a bagel. There bagels are always fresh, and the sandwiches are huge. And it is a great deal! Today, on my regular visit for a dozen to take home, one of the counter ladies decided that talking on the phone for 15 mins. was more important than waiting on customers.
