Can I give six stars?…read more First, this review is for Winterlake Lodge. It's hard to know where to begin. Other than Carl, and maybe his daughter and son-in-law (Ty), I'm not sure many of these chefs, guides, helicopter pilots, etc. will even be there next season, so the faces greeting you may be different. I expect however, that your general experiences will be the same as ours. First, let me describe Josh, our personal guide for our four days at the lodge. Our two girls (7 and 10) absolutely loved him! From day one when he took them in the trolling boat to go fishing on the lake, to walking on the upper Trimble Glacier by themselves, Josh was someone they trusted and loved from day one. Paula and Josh also got along great. But why shouldn't they -- both being accomplished musicians. Yes, this is Joshua Hryciak, the frontman of the group Mermaid Skeletons. When he pulled out his guitar on day three and gave us (really it was for our daughters) a private acoustic rendition of "In Search of the Pan Child" - itself a wondrous imaginative stroll through Kensington Gardens - it was truly breathtaking. What a gift. But I suspect that it was this diversity of backstory that made everything else about Josh (and how he could be so lovely with the four of us) make sense. He is deep and real and genuine and he just loves life. While we were at Winterlake Lodge, he brought to us that love for life, for the Lodge and for the surrounding area and its animal inhabitants. From the tundra, to the glacier, to the bogs, to canoeing on River Lake in search of the Beaver Dams, we saw and did so much and had so much fun. And this was the type of fun that will not be soon forgotten. But everyone at Winterlake Lodge seemed to be like Josh. The Chef, Jessie, was an accomplished gourmet chef - wow that food was amazing! But she was also a traveller, and a seeker of adventure and a soul in search of challenge and self growth. We didn't get to spend much time with her, but she was definitely one of our favorites. The two cherries on top of this wonderful experience were Alexis and Cammie. They simply spoiled our girls. Each night the girls arrived to find their stuffed animals arranged in a little vignette - from a tea party one night, to a poker game the next, to storytime one of the of the last. Each time we would arrive for bedtime, we would find a treat. Now, I understand that lots of folks like our girls, but this extra effort was really over the top. I could go on and on about the helicopter and its pilot Martin. I could go on and on about the fact that the wildlife is so close that black bears and their cubs can be seen wandering near the main lodge (be careful with that one - Momma's and their young and all that). I could go on and on about the scenery and the accommodations. But this is really a review of the staff. They were simply glorious and we could not have been more blessed to have had the opportunity to stay with them at Winterlake Lodge.

I feel bad because this is a family business but I reread my itinerary and it makes it sound like…read moreour days will be filled with adventure. The food is amazing and the staff are very nice. The helicopter trip to the glacier is cool but there is not a lot to do on campus. There was no massage, daily stretch classes or yoga (1day there was) like advertised on our itnerary. It did rain for 2 days and that's not their fault but there was no creative thinking when that happens. We all were in the lodge with only 1 fire set, out of 3 so we were all crammed in 1 room. There are bear and the trails on not kept up so really no where to walk In the area. Our guide was friendly but wasn't really around and didnt come to say goodbye to us. I think there is lots to do for the staff at the lodge. Again, its a beautiful place and my kids loved the dogs but considering the steep price of this trip, I was disappointed.

A cute B&B with a few rooms downstairs, the kitchen, sitting area and one bedroom plus the "Alaska…read moresuite" upstairs. There's a sign on the swinging door meant to notify guests that its the door to the Alaska Suite (I don't know if that actually deters anyone from using the bathroom that's right past the swinging doors). The kids bedroom and the master bedroom are on either side, both with combo locks. Not sure how "secure" this setup is, especially for ones that truly have little ones staying in that room. The beds were so soft and squeaky, none of us got a good nights rest. They did a good job with the decor in all the common areas, bedrooms and bathroom. The two dilapidated RVs in the back of the property were quite the eyesore though. 100% contactless check in and out. I received a code via email 15 minutes before check in at 3pm and instructions later on how to check out. My parents were stoked to find the help yourself well stocked fridge and pantry items for breakfast. They cooked themselves some soft boiled eggs in the early AM and were happy campers.

It was a basement room and the toilet was on a weird pedestal The owner was the nastiest business person I've ever talked to. Actually she sent me nasty texts after I called Expedia. DO NOT STAY HERE!

The accommodations were absolutely wonderful--comfortable, clean, and thoughtfully designed. The staff truly made the experience unforgettable. Every single person we interacted with was friendly, attentive, and went above and beyond to make sure we had everything we needed. The food was outstanding--delicious, fresh, and consistently impressive throughout our stay. And the valet service? Exceptional!! Seamless, efficient, and always delivered with a smile. This has officially become our NEW favorite place to stay when we're in Anchorage. We're already looking forward to our next visit. Highly, highly recommend! Rooms We had a room on the 16th floor... the views were mindblowing.. the room so comfortable absolute perfection. Nearby activities Centrally located, we were there for medical reasons and just 5 min. from the Drs. offices. Safety We felt perfectly safe the entire time and went for several walks to explore the city. Walkability Convenient to EVERYTHING! Perfect location! Food & drinks We ate at the Crow's Nest, Fletchers and grabbed coffee at the Cubby all were delightful and delicious! Noteworthy details Valet staff was outstanding in every way, always pleasant, remembered our faces, so professional, we didn't have to lift a finger, if we didn't want to. Next time we will make sure to hit the Spa! Hotel highlights Luxury, Great view, Romantic, Quiet, Great value

As I walked through the lobby and in the elevators I was taken aback by how outdated this place was. This was especially apparent in the elevator with the gaudy faux gold hand rails and the smelly outdated carpet. It felt 1980's for sure! The room was average at best. I did have lunch and dinner at their restaurants and was very disappointed except for one (I will drop reviews on those restaurants). I love the history. But it's not enough for me to pay top dollar for an average hotel room. I will not be coming back.
