I booked this hotel because of the history and the convenience. Upon arrival the front desk was very friendly and efficient. As I walked through the lobby and in the elevators I was taken aback by how outdated this place was. This was especially apparent in the elevator with the gaudy faux gold hand rails and the smelly outdated carpet. It felt 1980's for sure! The room was average at best. I did have lunch and dinner at their restaurants and was very disappointed except for one (I will drop reviews on those restaurants). I love the history. But it's not enough for me to pay top dollar for an average hotel room. I will not be coming back. read more

We spent an entire week here from March 22-28, 2026, and honestly, we can't say enough good things about our stay! From the moment we arrived, everything exceeded our expectations. The accommodations were absolutely wonderful--comfortable, clean, and thoughtfully designed. The staff truly made the experience unforgettable. Every single person we interacted with was friendly, attentive, and went above and beyond to make sure we had everything we needed. The food was outstanding--delicious, fresh, and consistently impressive throughout our stay. And the valet service? Exceptional!! Seamless, efficient, and always delivered with a smile. This might be the nicest hotel in town. It probably is. They have little shops on the lower floor. What a change from other hotels downtown ! I really am glad I was able to experience this place for the first time I feel like I'll always choose this spot ! The atmosphere here is pretty amazing this hotel is huge ! It has 3 different places to eat both restaurants are good and serve good drinks. They have certain events on weekends for entertainment. The rooms are super spacious with comfortable beds. The staff is friendly. This hotel was nice, but definitely not for everyone. I stayed here for one night as part of a princess cruise package. The room was generously sized and the beds were large. Everything in this hotel looks soooooo old, though. I think it's just the style but wow. They also had only one working elevator to the tower our room was located in during the duration of my stay and it was slow. The staff were nice and the princess staff that worked within the hotel coordinating room keys and such were just slightly confused on what time our rooms would be ready and such. They told us 4pm, but I happened to check at around 1:30 and they had our keys waiting for us. I will say, during my stay there (basically 1.5 full days and 1 night), I only saw the chocolate store and 1 other store open. The other handful of stores never seemed to be open. read more

Very nice! We stayed here for one night ahead of a Princess Cruise. We didn't pick our room as it was part of the cruise package. The room (#578) was huge as it was a suite. It had 4 distinct areas: - Bathroom (Commode, Tub/Shower) - Sink / Makeup / Dressing - Bedroom (King Bed, 2 Night Stands with Lamps plus 1 Clock Radio, TV and Refrigerator) - Sitting Room (Sofa, Chair, Coffee Table, TV, Desk and Chair, Dining Table and 2 Chairs, Coffee Machine, Bar Sink and Ice Bucket) While the decor is dated, everything was clean and worked well. We booked the "Preferred Bed and Breakfast" package for over $500/night, expecting a premium experience. Instead, we were told at check-in that breakfast is just a strict $30 credit--an amount that doesn't even cover a basic morning meal for two at hotel prices. When I politely brought up this misrepresentation to the front desk manager, his response was shockingly rude and dismissive. Without an apology, he doubled down on the bait-and-switch, telling me, "That's why we tell you when you check in." When I expressed disappointment, he abruptly dropped the rate to $500 and essentially brushed me off, insinuating we could move on to another hotel if we didn't like it. As frequent travelers, we have never been treated with such disrespect by hotel management. To make matters worse, the property is showing its age. The rooms are tired, dated, and nowhere near worth the premium price tag. Save your money and stay at the Marriott or somewhere else in Anchorage where guests are actually treated with basic respect. read more

The history of this hotel is incredible and a true piece of Alaska culture but the incredible staff are what make this place so special. Located in the heart of Anchorage, the hotel is an easy walk to all the local attractions. The rooms are large and well appointed, very clean and comfortable. From the moment we walked into the hotel the staff were friendly, helpful and welcoming. We had an issue with the room we were initially assigned and had the good fortune to meet Scott at the front desk. He immediately jumped into action and had us on the right path. The hotel restaurants serve delicious food, the portions are huge and the waiters are very friendly and efficient but without a doubt it's the restaurant manager Rayli Wilson in The Pantry that stole the show. Aside from the food and service, Rayli had some great insights about the hotel and some added benefits. We had an excellent stay as part of our Alaska experience and the Hotel Captain Cook added greatly to our experience. read more

This was an add on to our Silver Sea cruise package, we chose it for convenience. This is probably my favorite hotel in America. The service is impeccable from the bell staff to front desk. The housekeeping staff is welcoming and helpful. The rooms are good sized and it's definitely worth the small increase for a junior suite to have a little more space. The bathrooms are large and the amenities are nice. I love the local Kaladi Brithers Coffee in the room. Great hotel! There are some poor reviews about this hotel but I will say it's Alaska so it's going to be different than the lower 48 but I would stay here over any other hotel in Anchorage. read more

We chose to stay at the Hotel Captain Cook because of the indoor pool, a big deal for my son on a winter trip. Unfortunately, once we arrived, I learned that parents and children of different genders must use completely separate locker rooms to access the pool and hot tub. As a single mom traveling alone with my young son, this meant we were expected to split up, even though he is under 14. He was expected to go into a locker room as a child with grown men I did not know. I was told I had to "have a man" in order to swim with a male child. This policy unintentionally excludes single parents, mixed-gender families, and anyone who needs to stay with their child for safety. It left us feeling singled out and unable to enjoy one of the main amenities we booked the hotel for. I truly hope the hotel will revisit this rule so that all families, not just those with two adults or same-gender parents, feel welcome and supported. read more

The Captain Cook Hotel, delivers a disappointing experience that significantly falls short of expectations. The decor is tastefully done, but several aspects of the hotel's logistics and service lead to considerable discomfort. The entrance is narrowly set up, creating difficulties for Uber drop-offs and pickups. Tower 3's remoteness from the main desk adds to the inconvenience, and although the rooms are spacious, the much-anticipated Mountain View is nearly impossible to see without significant effort. The room conditions are particularly disconcerting with noticeable stains on the furniture and a bathtub that fails to drain properly, compounding frustration with basic amenities. The Pantry Cafe, despite the efforts of its staff, serves food that not only fails to satisfy but also caused a stomach upset, raising serious concerns about its quality and freshness. The experience is further soured by Manager Ross's conduct, which was nothing short of insulting. During a simple request for a late checkout, necessitated by a delayed flight due to snow storm back in Boston, his abrupt and rude dismissal was shocking. His tone was rude and usage of words "I WANT the room" for such a reasonable request, coupled with his argumentative demeanor in public, profoundly impacted the stay, making it feel unwelcoming and hostile. I felt insulted on the phone to start with and then when i was checking out, i felt threatened and discriminated against. This treatment, especially when linked to the supposed benefits of the I Prefer rewards program, highlights a severe lack of customer appreciation and empathy. The hotel's athletic club, though equipped with amenities like a Peloton bike, sauna, and pool, is too overcrowded, rendering it more stressful than relaxing--far from what one would desire on a vacation. This experience left me feeling undervalued, disrespected, and discriminated against--a stark contrast to the expectations set by a reputed hotel. The lack of managerial empathy and the publicly argumentative response from Ross not only damaged the immediate experience but also my perception of the hotel's commitment to guest satisfaction. This incident could have escalated to a serious complaint or legal challenge, had it been documented live. As a guest, I felt threatened and unsafe, which is unacceptable in any hospitality setting. This entire ordeal is a cautionary tale for potential guests and a significant blot on the hotel's reputation. read more

Except for the very slow luggage delivery (over an hour) after being up since 5:30AM EDST for 9 hours of flying, AND a couple entering our room with a poopy baby (They had a key, room was double booked, and we let them change the baby even though the room didn't smell as fragrant after they changed his diaper), this was a lovely respite. We arrived here around 7:30PM in a van driven by Liz, a friendly Alaskan who teaches middle school special needs students when school is in session. The check in was smooth via Princess cruises. The room was large and comfortable, with 4 robes, 2 small fridges, 2 bathrooms, 2 televisions, and a comfortable bed. That bed was heavenly! We both had deep sleeps. The 4 pillows were also nice, as well as curtains that kept out the evening and morning sunlight. Room temperature was perfect. Next time we hope to stay for more than one night. read more

This was a very lofty and elegant, though a senior hotel in the heart of Downtown Anchorage...where everything was nearly walking distance. We only stayed 2 nights in one of their suites...and their living room quarters were fantastic, with incredible city-mountain views! The bedroom was just Okay...a bit cramped. The biggest annoyance was that although the front desk personnel were all friendly and courteous, they were just out of it....as in gone to space?? We had to repeat everything! This problem started even before getting to the hotel. I called in advance to change the Deluxe King to a Suite. Well, when we arrived, we had to wait until they arranged all that from scratch...as if my long distance phone call from home (days ago?) were in vain. Also, we had to make the request for certain things (towels, for instance) more than once. There was yet another instance when my husband had to explain this specific trip itinerary situation twice. Hello...are you guys listening...at all?!? Also, there was this one incidence...when this clearly homeless man got into the hotel elevator with us. Both my husband and I thought we were going to die for sure! I thought this man was going to pull a gun out at any moment and ask for money. OMG?!? Yes, we reported him to the front desk. Despite the "spacey" service, I have to give at least 4 stars for its ideal location, and many wonderful hotel amenities, including amazing shops, artwork, restaurants, etc.etc. Plus, it had so much character...with the obvious Captain Cook and the sea themes throughout. I stayed there last weekend, as i was attending a Convention hosted there. It has a prestigious reputation, and the rooms aren't the cheapest in town, so expectations were high. Check in went smoothly - i was offered help with my bags. I honestly could have used it, but had no change for the bellhop so i declined. I was directed to the specific elevator for my room - i hadn't stayed before - did not know there are 3 towers, each with a dedicated elevator. The elevator for me was quite a distance from the check in desk, and located next to Fletcher's Pub. I got to my room, and upon 1st inspection it seems clean, and nice. The view wasn't spectacular - parking lots, buildings, and a faint hint of mountain. HIgher up would have been better. In fact being on the 10th Floor would have been best of all, as this is where the Communal Microwave facility is located. I would have expected in a hotel with rooms at this price point, that there'd be in-room microwaves. There was a fridge however, just don't expect to re-heat your food in your room, you need to travel for that. And the microwaves are only situated in 2 of the towers, on certain floors. Bathroom was small, somewhat utilitarian, and had a small worktop surrounding the sink. I like more space to tip out all of my cosmetics and toiletries. The hotel toiletries were not "bougie" as i would have expected from this hotel. Just some unbranded hotel supply average stuff, I've definitely had better. The wardrobe had a safe, and was equipped with Robes and Slippers (I didn't use these) The pillows are dreadful. At my age, i ONLY use a specific type of pillow (cooling memory foam, firm, and with a dip in the centre) and it's always an exercise in anxiety wondering how the pillows in hotels will be. These were squishy, lumpy, and not at all my cup of tea. I had to unplug the clock to plug in my CPAP machine, as there was only the one double socket in between the beds. As the clock was the only source of USB sockets that i was able to find, it was a juggling act trying to charge my devices conveniently. In lower 48 hotels, I've found that almost all lamps & wall sockets are often equipped with USB outlets too. USB is not modern now. It should be available throughout the room, and this was highly inconvenient. This hotel has a big square floor plan, with lots of shopping in the lobby, and a few places to eat. I was at The Pantry for breakfast for 2 mornings of my stay. On Sunday, being by myself, i was people-watching, and it was busy. One of the servers, seemed unhappy at being given instruction from his co-worker, about being told to clear a table. And he made his displeasure loudly known to customers. He slammed a chair back into place, and it banged when it hit the table. Then when he was setting places at other tables, he was flinging saucers loudly onto the table, and they were clattering and disturbing the peace. He made his mood known to all, and i think when you're in the service industry, it's beneficial to mask your personal feelings when you're in front of customers. We can see you're unhappy sir, and it's harshing my peaceful buzz. I accidentally lost my room card out of my open purse whilst in The Pantry that morning, and came back to see if it had been handed in. I was directed to the Front Desk, where they were super busy. I I waited my turn, and the clerk serving me was brusque. It's an easy mistake to lose a room card, and yes, i know you're busy, but you're in the service industry, and i want the fake smile pasted on your face, like how they do in cheaper hotels elsewhere in the country. If this is how people are being treated in this Hotel, then no wonder it has an average of just over 3 stars. We have a reputation to uphold Alaska, your staff need their customer service skills enhanced. And some microwaves in the rooms wouldn't go amiss either. read more

I stay at this hotel often. It is the primary hotel that my company uses. If I had a choice, I'd would stay someplace else. Unfortunately I have been disappointed more than once with their cleanliness and service. The hotel cleaning staff need to do a much better job and the staff managers need some training on taking care of their customers. Here is my latest experience... After an overnight flight, I checked in at 7 AM. I went up to my room and preceded to unpack. I eventually went into the bathroom and found it in an unclean state. I immediately called the front desk and told them I needed a different room because mine was not clean (see pictures). I went down to the front desk to get assigned a new room and the woman that I spoke to was on the phone. I showed the pictures to the male that was there and he asked me if I wanted them to come up and clean the room I told him that I expected to check in to a clean room and that I could not trust that the entire room was even cleaned to begin with. At that time the woman, who I had spoken to earlier, put her call on hold and issued me a new room in a different tower. There are three "towers" in the hotel. I moved to the new room. I got some sleep and when I was going out for lunch, stopped at the front desk and asked to speak to a manager. I wanted to ensure a manager was notified of what had happened. The male that I spoke identified himself as a manager and brushed me off saying that they had addressed it. Never once apologizing for the situation. I expect, at a minimum and apology for the hotel's incompetence. Nothing. Typically hotels would actually also give some sort of compensation for a situation like this (free cup of coffee or something). There wasn't even an acknowledgment of fault. Very disappointing. This place is dark, dated and the service sucks. Find someplace else to stay. I only stay here because I have to. I have stayed at this hotel 25+ times and nothing changes. read more

The bathroom area was standard but there was mold around the tub and on the floor. Housekeeping was knocking on the door at 0915 on the day of checkout to clean the room before we even checked out. This is an older, semi fancy hotel, not a new business hotel or a luxury resort. If you set your expectations appropriately you will likely have a great stay. We stayed for 5 nights in an upgraded junior suite (2 rooms, 2 TVs, mountain and water views.). All in all our stay was very good and we would return. Pros: - Large, clean rooms with comfortable beds, bedding, and pillows. - Large bathroom, large towels, good soap and shampoo - Super friendly staff - Fast and easy check-in - Modern coffee shop with lots of seating and places to work. The breakfast sandwich and burrito were pretty good, but not better than the ones from the Snow City Cafe a block away. - The pizza at Fletchers was great. - The whole place has a tiki feel and a tiki feeling bar would be an amazing addition. Cons - The lobby lacks seating and is filled throughout the day with people waiting for cruises. The mass of people hanging out or sleeping destroys any vibe of comfort or luxury. - There is no lobby bar and not good place to hang out with a beverage. You can get drinks at Fletchers but it is crowded and you have to wait to be seated. - The bar on the roof in The Crows nest is cool but uses the same system as Fletchers and doesn't allow you to hang out without being assigned a seat. - The breakfast restaurant sits empty all day after like 11am. That spot would make a perfect bar the rest of the day. -Food prices were reasonable for Anchorage but drink prices are outrageous compared to everywhere else in town. read more

The location seems to be nice as well, we walked to dinner. There is a customer service manager--Ross--who seems to be a little obnoxious and dramatic. He was so loud and he was talking badly about another shift, and housekeeping not bringing coffee to another guest as soon as they should've, and then he waved his hand around and shushed another coworker at the reception desk. We stayed here over the holiday weekend where we had a comfortable trip and enjoyed the hotel's convenient location. It's only 10-15 mins from the airport, walking distance to several restaurants, and an easy uber ride to about anything else you'd want to see or do in the city. The hotel is historical meaning that while many aspects of it are dated, there are also levels of grandeur you just don't find in modern builds. The large wooden doors, impressive lobby, and beautiful hallways are magnificent and well maintained. I particularly loved the holiday display and gingerbread town downstairs. The room was dated in more of the unpleasant sense of the word with a small awkward bathroom and older design and decor. I was pleased to see modern charging ports had been introduced to the bedside and there's a mini fridge and coffee station. The room was spotless and everything felt really clean. My biggest complaint about the room actually came from some small details. The linens, including both the bedding and towels, feel cheap and scratchy and the toiletries smell terrible so I didn't use them. Other than that it was a perfectly comfortable and quiet room. The hotel includes some cute shops and a couple of fantastic restaurants that offer room service. Our customer service was also quite excellent. We'll definitely look forward to staying here again on your next visit to Anchorage. read more

Nice location right downtown. We were traveling on our own, but this is primarily a tour hotel. This was helpful to us because the hotel restaurant serves a full breakfast menu with very reasonable prices, and they move people through very efficiently. An onsite taxi queue helped us return to the airport without needing to wait for a ride-share. read more

This is a great place. The views are spectacular. Junior suites are great for extended stays or if you want to visit because of the separation of bedroom and seating area. The shopping and art are great walks. I love the wood and the architecture. Staff is knowledgeable friendly and service is extremely impressive. I stay here often and have never been disappointed. I enjoy the hotel dining, Fletcher's is a great place to have drinks and pub quality food. I stay at the Captain Cook all the time for work. It's probably the nicest hotel in ANC. Please don't mistake it for a grand resort. Expectations need to come down a notch for beautiful Anchorage. I think to give a generous review of the Captain Cook, you have to put it in context. Is this an outstanding hotel? No. But is it the nicest place in Anchorage? Probably. That's why I'd recommend it to anyone spending some time in Anchorage, at any season. The good stuff: the location, the lobby, restaurants and bars. The athletic club is functional and quaint (gender-separate gyms!) Staff was always around and helpful. The bad stuff: the Wi-Fi is terrible. The rooms are rough. The hot water is unreliable (took two COLD showers). With limited resources, I think Captain Cook did it right. This is a hotel focusing on what goes on outside of your room. It's beautiful downstairs. Upstairs is another story. But if you're coming to Alaska just to stay in your room, what are you doing?? read more
