The beds were so soft and squeaky, none of us got a good nights rest. They did a good job with the decor in all the common areas, bedrooms and bathroom. The two dilapidated RVs in the back of the property were quite the eyesore though. 100% contactless check in and out. I received a code via email 15 minutes before check in at 3pm and instructions later on how to check out. My parents were stoked to find the help yourself well stocked fridge and pantry items for breakfast. They cooked themselves some soft boiled eggs in the early AM and were happy campers.

My husband and I were traveling to Alaska with our little girl dog (she always travels with us) and so I thought this would be a good hotel to stay in but am thankful that I only booked this place for one night because we had a poor experience. This hotel is across from a plaza with Starbucks and Hilton Garden Inn. We stayed for one night (a Saturday) in a queen suite, which cost me ~$280 for one night. We had arrived earlier in Anchorage than expected and so we called the hotel to ask if our room would be ready. The employee said probably after 12 pm. So later on, we had called around 1:45 pm if a room would be available to check in earlier (check in is at 3 pm). The employee said yes and so we drove over. When we checked in, we were surprised to be told by the employee checking us in that there is no room available yet, even though this was the exact same employee who told us (over the phone) that a room was available. We ended up waiting in the car until 3. So at 3 pm, we finally checked in. Got the luggage dolly and headed up to the second floor. However, the room we went in had a very, very strong smell of mold, mildew and a chemical cleaning smell. My husband was already out of patience by then and so we headed back to the front desk. Another employee said that we could only be placed in this room because the 2nd floor is the pet floor... but since there is no other rooms she refused to give us another room. After some arguing from my husband, we were placed in another room, but on the first floor (right next to the laundry room. Yes there are coin operated washers and dryers in this hotel). This room was clean and did not have a odor but it was annoying to hear the laundry room door slam throughout the day and part of the evening. A few days after we had checked, I saw on my credit card bill that I was over charged a pet fee for our stay. But at least the manager I spoke to on the phone was able to credit me back the fee. But find it to be annoying that I was over charged (again we only stayed one night) and had to call to reverse the charge. I also glad that I always like to check my credit card transactions regularly to catch things like this. The room itself was fine and space was comfortable for 2 people and a pet. But was expecting much better service.

Over the course of 10 days I stayed here 3 different times in between flights/train trips. Funny enough, every time I got a room on a different floor. Every floor does have their own bathroom(s) and kitchen, but you can use facilities on any floor if the ones on your floor are busy. The lower floor rooms have a low ceiling, which for me was the best blacked out from sunlight (which was present from 430am to 1130pm). The main and upper floor didn't black out the sun that well. You always get one large towel and one face towel along with shower gel and shampoo. There is a big fridge in every room, so it's easy to store leftovers and drinks. There's a gas station across the road for some easy snacks. Hairdryers are available upon request at the front desk. The room itself was clean enough, although the bedding definitely has seen better days. There were laundry detergent stains as well as thinned out fabric (and holes) here and there. Didn't seem like they got ironed either. For the bathrooms I'd say, bring flipflops. Depending on who used them before you, there might be soap and/or hair everywhere. They could use an additional daily cleanup tbh. For people that have stayed in hostels before, this is nothing shocking or new. Being a solo, female traveler, feeling safe is a high priority. I was glad to see that the front doors lock and you need to swipe your key-card to open them. Most of the time there is someone at the front so it's highly unlikely any random people would wander in. The area around the hotel is walkable and I walked to the center quite a few times which is about 20min. Guaranteed you won't find better price/quality in Anchorage!

The house remains quiet through out the day and night. Even when people are walking around, I could not hear them from my room. In the morning fresh coffee is brewed and tingles your senses. Great way to get you moving! Breakfast is always something speciel. Homemade granola with yogurt. Fresh fruit. Juice. Teas. The cooked prepared breakfast was so yummy! The last morning I stayed they had reindeer sausage and flap jacks. I could not put my fork and knife down, it was so good! Even during the day they have cookies out for the guests. On the side of the house outside there's a little fireplace. The back deck is nice to sit in the morning with your first cup of coffee. The folks are just as friendly!! We got extremely spoiled and the rest of our vacation was spent comparing our meals to the ones at House of Jade. (Nothing came close by the way.) **BED BUG ALERT**…read more okay so you now how when you go to a hotel the sheets usually are clean, new and matching? Well that's not how they do it at the Spenard. the sheets were floral, solid, mismatched and looked about 15 years old. That I was going to grin and bear. The ciggerate burns and rips in the comforter I was going to grin and bear. The dangling lightbulb instead of a normal lamp I was going to just turn a blind eye to. The old microwave on a foldout and the holes in the bathroom door I was looking past. The "Adults Only" store right next door was difficult to look past, but hey it was just going to be one night and i'd find somewhere else tomorrow, right? So now to the bed bug discovery...I was sitting up in the bed at about 1AM - unwilling to bring myself to lay in the sheets. I was sitting for only ten minutes in the light of the room till a bug comes scampering across my shoulder...I tried to capture it on a piece of paper and right when it hit the paper it moved at an unprecidented speed - so i squished it. I thought it might be a tick but I wasn't sure. I looked up bed bugs on my phone and was horrified to find out that it was infact a bed bug. When I showed the evidence to the owner/employee she said, "Oooooh, that's a BIG ONE!!" I got the heck out of there and found the most wonderful hotel down the street - Eagle...something was in the title. I will definitely go back to that one. Things you need to know about bed bugs: 1:they only feast on human and animal blood. 2:They can survive up to a year without eating. 3:They usually onl come out in the dark but in some cases (like mine) can be seen in the light. 4: You can only be sure you have an infestation if you physically see one. 5:They are nearly impossible to get rid of - exterminators even have problems with them. 6:you will likely bring them home with you if you encounter them. 7:They come out in the hundreds in the night and eat their sleeping victims like a gift from hell.
