The food here ruined an informal business dinner I was hosting. They were all out of the asparagus dishes advertised on the menu insert. (This was a Saturday at 19h and there were only 2-3 other companies there.) The salmon filet was gone too, but we were recommended the salmon steak. It was the dryest and most tasteless piece of fish I've ever eaten. Normally I would have complained that it was not edible, but since I was hosting I didn't want to make a scene. Served with a very small (but actually very tasty) potato gratin and some salad leaves. The hamburger was served with tasteless potato wedges that were soft and mushy inside. They reminded me of the ones from the freezer at Edeka. The tuna salad came with two big slices of ham on top - the guest didn't mind but it's not what I would expect in a tuna salad. The salad leaves underneath again reminded of Edeka's prepackaged "gourmet salad". The young waiter who came out with our Ricard helplessly asked around who had ordered the "whiskey". The place seems to depend on a single waitress who seems to know her stuff. Kaiserschmarrn for dessert is deliciously caramelized but all the sugar makes this big dessert dish too sweet. I came here for breakfast, it was my second time this restaurant. The restaurant has really great atmosphere and the brunch here was just good, it offered lots of different opinions. I really like it! Since it's buffet style kind of the brunch, it allows you eat as much as you want, until you are full. The part I love the most is how much choices they have and most of them tasted good to me. I like their chicken legs and breasts a lot, the chicken wings was a bit dry, tasted ok. The fish here generally tasted also good. Eggs were good as well. I tried the tiramisu, it was surprisingly good, that I didn't see it coming. I do hope they have offer my fruits and salads, didn't see much of them. Kuchenkaiser was quite close to a bus station, it was quite easy to find. I like the design of restaurant as well, quite Germanish, so does the brunch. The service was nice and friendly. The price of the brunch was ok,but a bit more expensive compared with others I have been. The restaurant was quite big as well, I saw people come and go, still got free tables for others. I was really enjoy the place and the food, my friends and I end up spending 2 hours here, great place to catch up as well. Thumbs up. read more

It was a second to last day in Berlin and being in a trendy part of the city with lots of bars, we were looking for a place to eat. Having gotten lost, we found ourselves in a dark location where the only light was from this restaurant. It looked quiet but the decor was pretty inviting, as was our hunger which we sought to satiate. Wanting to eat somewhere nice on our last day, we couldn't have been happier here. Our waiter was extremely, kind, personable and friendly. His english near perfect. He was only one person waiting the whole restaurant which was pretty large. Luckily, it wasn't a busy night. We ordered our food and drinks. I still can't get around how reasonably priced beer is in Germany. Whereas in the Uk you eat somewhere nice, your drinks bill can be at least a 30-40% of your food total. In Germany it's almost like the other way around. Your drink will only be 10-15% of your total bill. It's nice to see that food is valued more highly than alcohol and quite rightly so. The food itself was not stunning but still of a very good standard and quality. My lamb cutlets with ratatouille were sublime. The Octopus Carpaccio less so, but still decent enough. The dessert was lovely, sweet breads with ice cream and plum. My friend really wanted the beer stein he was drinking from and after asking if he could purchase it, the waiter said he couldn't sell it, but that he could have it for free. Suffice to say, we left a generous tip as a result, and the glass made it back to England safely in one piece. So in all, the atmosphere in this place is relaxed and quiet. Perfect for a nice dinner and conversation. The staff are superb and the food very good considering the price which came up to about 35 EUR each incl drinks. If in Berlin, shall definitely be stopping here again. read more

First of all, the place looked great, the food looked great and I would really like to write a more positive review but I can't. So this was my experience with my wife. We arrived around 8pm, first night in Berlin, having seen Kuchenkaiser while walking around Kreuzberg we decided to go in that night for dinner. We were seated, everything looked great, we were REALLY hungry so we decided to order the a plate of hors d'oeuvre and our mains, thinking that a plate of cold meats and bread would arrive quickly and we could move on to our mains. That did not happen. A table beside us that ordered after us received their drinks and food before our drinks had even arrived and they ordered mains only. They also got our bread. About 40 minutes passed and I was about to go to complain when I saw a waiter with what looked like, and eventually turned out to be our shared starter. But before the waiter delivered the food to our table, he tried to give it to every other table in our section I had to tell him it was ours in my broken German. Halfway through our starter our bread arrived with a minor apology. First drinks long finished a tried to flag the waitress/manager's attention and asked for a menu, after I received a menu no one else visited our table for the rest of our time. At 9.30 I got up and went to the bar and told the waitress there that I was paying for what we had and that we were leaving. She flagged down the waitress/manager who was serving us. This lady was quite rude, maybe this is a language barrier thing, but she was unhappy to let us leave. She made up a bill for what we'd eaten and I paid it, over paid it actually, and not to her but the other waitress because I thought she was rude. Needless to say that the food we saw while we were waiting to be served all looked really good, smelled really good, we would like to have known what it tasted like. In the end we were there for 90 minutes, got a starter, a beer and a soft drink. The service, for us only, was terrible. Everyone else, even many who arrived after us, received prompt and professional service. read more

Maybe I made a mistake by ordering decidedly not-German food. We got the eggs benedict and scrambled eggs with spinach. Both arrived only slightly warmer than room temperature. The scrambled eggs were very bland and flat and came with two slices of focaccia that had clearly been sitting out for a long time. There was also a thin slice of ham. It was very disappointing but edible. The eggs benedict was another story. The poached eggs were only slightly over cooked but sat on some very stale bread and were covered with what could only have be described as mayonnaise mixed with a little curry. There was also bacon that was so under cooked and fatty that I could not bite through it. I won't ever go back, but if you do, stay away from the breakfast items. On the positive side, the restaurant has a lot of character and a decent selection of drinks. I enjoyed my berliner weiss rot very much, it came in a great glass. read more

The Sunday brunch buffet is fantastic. The cakes are usually excellent. But: The coffee is horrible The service is hit & miss, with those long-term servers usually being incredibly rude with an extreme version of "Kreuzberg Schnauze". The coolest bits about this place are its history ...& the Sunday buffet. Otherwise, there are so many other, better options within minutes with better coffee that don't make you feel as if you've ruined the staff's day just because you showed up. read more

This review will be short as we just got home from Kuchen Kaiser and I wanted to write this review right away. Honestly, and without exaggeration, tonight Kaiser Kuchen provided us with the worst dining experience we've ever had in this city. We ordered two vegetarian soufflé, a side order of sauerkraut, and a schnitzel. We had to wait 1 hour 15 minutes for our food, during which our waiter did not check on us or ask if we wanted more drinks. When we asked him if our order was OK (after 1 hour) he was rude and dismissive. When the food finally did arrive the soufflé were literally smaller than a cupcake, the salad was swimming in oil, and the saurkraut had meat in it - something not mentioned on the menu. When we told the waiter he refused to believe there was meat in it, and we had to physically show him the pieces of bacon. Anyway, long story short: we waited over an hour for our food, it wasn't what we ordered, and it was so small we actually had to eat again when we got home. AVOID. read more

I have made plans to meet friends here twice, the first time, we decided it was too packed and went to the little French chocolate place in front. The second time, we actually had cake and coffee here. I had a chocolate something or another and an espresso, they were both okay but nothing special. read more

After a weekend of excessive partying it perhaps wasn't the best time to be exploring new restaurants as it was enough of a battle to keep my eyes open. We'd walked along the boring part of Oranienstraße looking for a nice restaurant when we caught sight of Kuchen Kaiser. It's difficult to miss situated on Oranienplatz and we were happy to discover that inside had as much character as outside. The waiter was very friendly and his excellent English and happy demeanour made us feel comfortable very quickly as well as being a refreshing change from some who give you the feeling that they're doing you a favour by even bothering to talk to you. The menu was compact and predominantly German fayre but being available in English menus made choosing what to eat easier since my sleep deprived brain was looking for as little work as possible. Our choices of Wienerschnitzel and a burger were simple but exactly what we needed. Both were excellent and the burger was so massive that in my weakened stat I could finish it. I look forward to returning in the summer when the weather is conducive to sitting outside and watching people on the square. read more

The name implies cake, the cake is not a lie. But very well supported by an entrenched network of classical german food. Had the schnietzl and some black noodles. Was really good, with nice service. Will come again if opportunity presents itself. read more

We ended up here on our first night in Berlin after we tried to get into Max & Moritz but were turned away because their kitchen was too busy (first time I've ever heard that excuse at a restaurant... serves us right for not making a reservation I suppose). The restaurant is rather large so on a Tuesday night there were plenty of tables available. Our waiter did not speak much English but we managed to order beers and some traditional German food - I had the schnitzel with potatoes and what I think were lingonberries. The food was pretty good - not amazing but very hearty and filling. We had apple strudel with ice cream for dessert and they also had a display case filled with cakes that all looked pretty great. The restaurant definitely seemed to be a local hangout - at the table next to us was a group of older men playing cards and the decor was fitting for a restaurant that has been around for as long as this one has - kind of worn but homey nonetheless. Overall, a satisfactory experience and a good place to get some traditional German food. read more

Surprisingly good, standard German fare. We stumbled into this place and ended up having a fairly good meal. Nice, large room with old school flair. Service was quite nice and we were glad we found it. Don't expect gourmet food here or the cool crowd but for a solid meal, you could do much worse in this part of town. read more
