On my recent trip to Germany, Hugos in Berlin was highly recommended to me by a close friend. My experience was phenomenal, from the service and expertise on the food and wine pairings to the views of the city. The restaurant is located at the top of the InterContinental Berlin hotel, serving French and Mediterranean fare in a coursed style experience. You can opt for 4, 6 or 8 courses, and add wine pairings to each of the courses. If you'd prefer, they can prepare a larger portion of some of the courses for just one main entree. We opted for the 8 course with wine pairing. The whole experience took around 3 hours, but we were certainly taking our time and enjoying every bite! With 8 courses I was definitely full, but keep in mind this is much more about art and flavor profiles than it is large portions. If you have any questions they are more than happy to help answer them, and the sommelier explains the wine pairings in as much detail as you prefer. As you can imagine, the menu changes frequently, but I will share what I had in June of 2019. I'd HIGHLY recommend Hugo's for a unique experience you won't forget!

How ingredients like parsnip, peas, pickled gherkin and horseradish, though familiar, transformed the dishes in unexpected ways. They were able to accommodate our group of ~15 and had a fair number of patrons were having dinner as well. Though dishes were pre-ordered I glanced at their American/British menu and made a mental note that they serve steaks here, cooked to your choice of "English," "Medium," or "Well done." I'm not sure what our order was called on the menu, but I'll refer to it as their "banquet menu plate," which was basically a two-course meal with a selection of different cuts of meat. The majority was pretty much good ol' German pork sausage, each one known from a particular region of the country. The starter salad tasted good and reminded me of the vinegar-y dressings typical to German salads (they skimped ingredients on mine though compared to all my neighbors' bowls). The main plate's largest sausage was Berlin's signature Currywurst drenched in sauce. Overall, the presence of so much meat to potato ratio would be a bit heavy for some, but it was nice to sample everything. As for my included beverage, I was excited about finally having a beer from a German tap and ordered Weissbier. To my disappointment, whoever filled my glass put the wrong stuff. I was served Helles in a Weissbier glass...wrong on so many levels and shocking for a place that should, out of anything in the world, get beer right. At least any beer is better than none, and I still chugged it. So in summary: Good food Questionable service Tip: They have free postcards for customers at the bar. They're plain, but if you want to make your friends jealous and prove you enjoyed a German beer, grab a couple and send them out!

As a starter we love sharing one of the "MIO tellers"... a variety of starters and anti-pasti with bread (around 5 euro). Fantastic sandwiches with delicious "vegetable balls" with humus, yogurt dip, and more in a big bread.... great for lunch in the afternoon and only 2,50. As dinner or also as lunch try the pasta's and the plates they serve, like chicken breast with vegetables in tomato sauce... all freshly cooked for you so keep in mind that you are not in a real hurry. The pasta's are also very good, with some original recipes with fish, chicken, or whatever suits your needs. Add to this the large selection of wines, pasta's, olive oils, and other specialties (that you can also buy), the nice location (it's very cosy inside), the friendly service and the low prices and I can't do anything but recommend Mio. The restaurant is right by a river bank next to some chic clothing stores and other restaurants and cafes. It's gained a second Michelin star this year. The location is Kreuzberg which is the neighborhood where I had purchased a flat in which of course means it's my favorite neighborhood. For dinner, at a modest price of 140 Euro, you get a 8 course meal or 120 which is for 6 course meal. The breads are amazing. My favorite is black pudding bread. My 12 year old loved it until I told him what was in it. The tasting menu changes all the time but the theme seemed to be a seed oil infusion which is super unusual. The hazelnut cream was marvelous and so was the strawberry seed oil. Suffice to say the food is nothing like you'd see in America's Michelin star or the predictable (albeit amazing) French cuisine Michelin found in Japan, America and throughout Europe. Five star for being super unusual. I liked the dining atmosphere. Also for children they can order a la carte so that's good because the kids don't want to sample everything. The dessert is super interesting - also not something you'd find outside of this restaurant. Both savory and sweet. Final touch is the second on the house dessert with thin film edible paper, Inside is a rich creamy red paste like things. It's made of pigs blood. I loved it and ate for everyone else because pigs blood seemed to scare these Americans. I was so impressed with it though. Definitely not something you'd see elsewhere. The best part about this 2 Michelin is that it's casual. You can come in with t-shirts and sandals. Super duper cool. Highly recommended as you'd be in for a one of a kind treat!
