I always come to this Kroger and it can be hit or miss sometimes, but today I'm writing a review about my most recent experience. I do grocery pick up sometimes and I was late to my pick up after the 9pm cut off time, but the Asst.Manager, Cassie, was so sweet and went out of her way to still allow me to get my groceries and complete my checkout. The Kroger Empire will vanquish all challengers - the proximity of Publix, The Fresh Market, and Ellwood Thompson be damned. This large, clean store has a greater selection, less turnover in staff, and better turnover in stock than the Lombardy Kroger (my go-to location). However, they recently went down to only one entrance, where there's now a gate. To accompany the security cameras, digital-ink price tags have also taken over the shelves, saving costs and work for staff for sure, but also making shenanigans like surge pricing much more likely. Such dystopian enhancements make the store less welcoming, and perhaps that's the point. read more

Kroger - no bueno, rva! - Grocery Near Me - Richmond, Virginia

I guess they figure they're going out of business in the near future due to Publix being across the street now, and they just DO NOT care how they speak to people. Called today to make sure that they cash Western Union money orders. Their website says they do. The gentleman on the phone says they do. I travel all the way there and a very condescending woman at the customer service desk (5/1/2023 at 1:45 PM) firstly cannot even say "Hi" back after I greeted her, she just stood and stared. Ok...so I let her know I needed to cash the money order and she just said "No." I stood there confused for a bit then she decided that Kroger no longer cashes money orders unless they issued them and they are BLANK. Blank. She's pulling stuff right out of XXX. I explained that I had called ahead to confirm and was accused of lying. I mean, it's right in my call log... Kept my cool in spite of her nasty attitude, tried to explain again what I was doing, giving her the benefit of the doubt that perhaps she just didn't understand, and she cut me off/talked over me and spoke to me as if I were a freaking idiot. Slowly, repetitively, condescendingly, sarcastically. I guess there isn't much left for them to lose, so why not? read more

Staff "dont know how to" refund a money order, she was just outright refusing to help me. When i asked for help from a manager after waiting 15 minutes for one, i was looked at with disgust and she snapped back "as you can clearly see we are understaffed" no i did not know. Things seemed normal. After applying for a refund with western union, calling the store and calling other stores, turns out she just didn't FEEL like helping me. Older woman, long nails, i believe glasses. She withheld $400 from me!! They also try to close early, they block off an entrance at 11. It usually reeks like trash or spoiled produce. They go through phases where they leave rotten produce sitting out. This place sucks and the staff sucks. Close this location down frfr . read more

A majority of the employees are very rude. Every now and then you will get one who helps you out. Unless you plan your trip during the right time of day, they'll be out of most produce. Most of the burden is actually just dealing with other customers or people who hang outside the store. Good luck finding a parking spot. Otherwise it's a grocery store, as long as they have the basics, what more can you ask of them? read more

I shop at the Kroger by my house, but came to this one because I was in the Carytown neighborhood. The parking lot was a mess. There were few carts in the queue. We went in to get some flowers, balloons and dinner for a sick relative. At the Mylar balloon area, we looked around for an attendant. An employee walked by and I asked him if he could help me. He goes, "I don't work in here." I said, "Oh! You have a Kroger uniform on...so I thought..." He interrupted and barked, "Not in floral!" and he kept moving. Instead of him saying that he'd find someone to assist me, he just rudely walked away. Wow! No balloons for my relative. I was "deflated" to say the least and will stick to my neighborhood! Please give your employees lessons in customer service. read more

I do think the Carytown Kroger is the best one in the area. But there are so many ways in which they need to improve if they want to survive once Publix is built across the street. I'm going to echo a bunch of other reviewers: the customer service here is downright poor. I've encountered a couple nice folks -- like the girl working the deli who bonded with me over our mutual cheese adoration -- but that doesn't make up for the others. I had a really weird encounter in the check-out line yesterday. I had maybe 15 items in my basket but none of the express lanes were open and the self-check out had a line. So, I got in line behind a girl who bought half the store. Once she was done, I loaded my stuff on the belt and asked the cashier if she had a place to drop the basket. Usually you can drop them at the end of the line in most places, but large packs of water were in the way. Her response? "Oh, yeah, you can take it to the basket drop near the entrance." I repeated my question asking if she didn't have a stack next to her, and she repeated her answer that I needed to take it to the basket drop. I replied, "Well that's not normal" and, unfazed, she blinked back at me. It was super fun carting my bags in one hand and the basket in the other. I never did find the drop on the exit route, so I just casually dropped it by the door. I imagine another customer grabbed it. I also needed Fancy Feast tuna for my cat yesterday. I had purchased it at this location in the past, so when I realized I was on my last can, I figured I could re-stock here. Nope. Looked like a disaster zone in the cat food aisle. So I walked from one end of the store to the other to check with customer service to see if they had any in stock. There were three people in line ahead of me but in 10 minutes the line never moved an inch. At that point, I started combing the store for someone on the floor. I found someone and told him what I needed. He walked with me back across the store to the cat aisle, pulled out a bunch of other flavors and kept announcing them (to which I replied "that's not tuna"), and then eventually told me he didn't see any and I should go back to customer service. Thank goodness for Amazon Prime. My cat only has to deal with no tuna for today (he has dry food). There was no way I was going back to that god-awful customer service line again. Another day I ordered grocery delivery because my back was out but I needed food. I live in an apartment building and the delivery guy made me take the groceries up to my floor from the street myself, even after I told him I was having trouble even walking. It was so rude and such a waste of $12. Aren't they supposed to deliver to your door? Or does that not apply with apartments? The parking lot can also be pretty awful. Yesterday I got super lucky and snagged the last spot...in the back of the lot. People were circling as if it was a mall on Black Friday. With all that said, I do still think this is the best Kroger around. Produce is fresh, I can generally find human food without issue, and the aisles never seem too mobbed despite the crowds. I feel the least amount of anxiety at this location, which isn't saying much. So, basically: Grocery shopping is a necessary evil. Don't expect to find helpful workers here. Lower your expectations and you'll be fine. read more

I'm not a huge fan of Kroger in general but every now and again, you just go because they are there. I happened to be in the neighborhood and had to pick up a few staples so this was the default option. My main issue with the store is just the way it's laid out and the product placement. The shelves are always so high and they try to cram more products at the ends of the aisles and in the aisles. When it's busy, this place is a zoo to negotiate. read more

Don't get me wrong... I like the rain but only when I'm at home cozy in my bed...Not when I'm out trying to do something... i have never been/heard of Kroger...so while i was on the road i wanted to check this place out...even though its a supermarket...why not! I think people primarily shop Kroger because know where everything is...its defently not a Walmart... some of the stuff at Kroger is overpriced... Yes, their produce is of better quality... but costs about thirty percent more...compared to the other local supermarkets.. this pace is nicer and cleaner... the check out line are long but they actually move quick! read more

The customer service here is laughable. We come here all the time, but today were met with an awful experience at check out. A young lady named Nygeria was our cashier. She rung up a bag of grapes, but accidentally entered duplicates in the system. Not a problem, that happens all the time. She tried repeatedly to void the item but for some reason, the computer wouldn't let her since the unit weight when voiding was slightly different from the original weight. After a couple attempts, she kept glancing at the grocery bagger and rolling her eyes and giving annoyed looks. All the while, my boyfriend and I were standing and waiting patiently. She then told us that the only way to fix this was to pay for this transaction, and then go to customer service and have them fix it. Um, what? I haven't even paid yet. I'm not about to authorize this incorrect transaction and then shuffle off somewhere else to deal with it. This isn't the cashier's fault, but... what?? That's not how you fix an issue - you don't make a customer to pay for something incorrect, and then let the issue be the customer's to deal with and make them go the extra mile to get their money back..? We told her that we didn't want to do that, and asked if someone could come fix the issue. She flagged down the cashier in the lane next to us. While we were waiting for that cashier to come over to help us, Nygeria kept pressuring us to pay here and then go to the customer service counter, which made us more infuriated. She said, "there's no one in the customer service line, you should just go there" and "when she comes over she's probably going to tell you to do the same thing, you should just go there now," all the while with a petulant attitude. This entire time, we've been patient and were not making a fuss. Not to mention, there's NO ONE waiting behind us in our lane this whole time. Why is she in such a huge rush to get us out of her lane? The other cashier finally came over, looked at the screen, and told Nygeria to void everything and ring up all the items again, which immediately fixed the problem.. so much for 'there's no other way to fix it.' We had a total of 5 items, and ringing it up took all of 30 seconds. Despite the attitude that we received for no reason, I understood that this issue wasn't the cashier's fault and took pity on her for having to deal with a faulty computer. So, as we were finishing the transaction I said, "Sorry that you have to deal with this!" She did not reply and refused to even meet my eye. Then, we walked away without any further words from her. Wow. I've never experienced such rudeness from a customer service employee. This was a very unpleasant experience and it makes me not want to shop here anymore. It's not worth dealing with rude folks here! A note to management: Please train your employees to deal with these situations in a more graceful manner. This is basic customer service/common sense. Our cashier had a huge attitude the whole time and insisted on making it our problem when it really should not have been. read more

Come to this Kroger, not the one on Lombardy/Broad! Trust me, it's better on so many levels, with all of the good Kroger qualities still intact. I came here only because a friend of mine and I had dinner in Carytown and decided to grocery shop since we were already here. I have to say it was an eye-opening experience. I pretty much always go to the one on Lombardy/Broad since it is very close to my apartment, though admittedly that location is less than ideal. This location fixed all of those issues nicely: 1) no sketch people asking for spare change or hanging out for no apparent reason, 2) lines tend to be much shorter, 3) far less competition for the discount bakery items (people will go crazy over the discounts at the Lombardy one), 4) parking/exiting/entering are much easier due to the layout of the lot, 5) everything is clean and highly organized here, which I can't always say for the other location. I hate to sound like an elitist (though I am Elite, so I guess it works) but the drive here is worth it to be able to get the items I need without playing bumper carts with the variety of oblivious customers and/or feeling like I came to a local hangout rather than a grocery store. This location has my business from now on. Overall: 4.5 stars ----------------- Pros: - Great selection of pretty much everything. - Same great prices as other Kroger locations. - The sketchiness of the Broad/Lombardy Kroger does not exist here! - Lots of parking despite being located in Carytown. Cons: - If you don't live near Carytown, getting to it is less than easy considering the traffic you'll face on the way here. read more

This is our go to grocery store. Mainly because of convenience, but also because they have a wide variety of items and a nice selection of produce to choose from. Depending on when you go, like Fri/Sat, some produce will be out of stock (like lemons, avocados, or mushrooms). The coupons are great, and I definitely find more natural/organic foods here than the Kroger in Willow Lawn. Have had the sushi a couple times and my husband had browning tuna once.. probably wouldn't suggest it, but the veggie rolls have been okay. Good bulk section! This Kroger has become my primary grocer due to both convenience and quality in terms of my shopping experiences. I'm really not too picky when it comes to buying groceries, but there are certain things that I must have and Kroger checks all of the boxes. This particular location is laid out functionally and is spacious. It's definitely a popular location but I find it's generally adequately staffed so that I don't ever have to wait in a long line to check out. Very good produce selection and I love the Kroger brand pre-cooked frozen chicken (I live off that stuff). read more

Don't have Kroger up in NY where I grew up, so when I heard about it here, my first experience was the one at Lombardy and Broad, which I was not a fan of. Tends to be mobbed and pure chaos there. The one in Carytown is better, but not that much. The layout of the store leaves a lot to be desired. I've never had a reason to speak with staff here, so I can't comment on what other reviews have mentioned. The trend with Krogers all over RVA seems to be (per discussions with my coworkers) that it's hit or miss with what they have in stock. Really frustrating when you go to visit for a specific item. By far the best Kroger around here is the one in Short Pump, but not everyone always wants to make the drive so I guess this one is your next best bet. read more

I hate to leave feedback for no more than one star, but I had two bad experiences at the Carytown Kroger last week. One of the cashiers was very rude and practically threw my groceries at me. The experience I decided to go and pick up my groceries instead of shopping inside. There were twelve things listed as being out of stock, and they weren't out of stock. I went inside the store and found almost all of the items listed as being out of stock. If I knew I would end up doing part of my shopping myself, I would have simply avoided paying the fee to pick up the groceries. Since the pandemic, Kroger prefers customers to pick up groceries instead of shopping inside to lower our chances of contracting covid19 and possibly exposing their employees. I, Kroger, genuinely want us to pick up our groceries and employ people in this department to be trusted to fetch everything the customer purchases. Sorry for the negative feedback because I've always liked this Kroger, but I've had it. Once Publix opens, I'm leaving for good. read more

This Kroger has the worst service I have ever seen. They are always understaffed and under stocked. You have to watch were you go as the staff will simply hit you with their carts or pallets. It's dangerous and management turns a blind eye. I would never take kids in that store, it an accident waiting to happen. When discussing issues with management they get nasty and confrontational. While I don't believe "the customer is always right" I do believe the customer is always the customer and should be treated the way you would like to be treated. Too bad a good organization like Kroger lets this type of behavior happen. read more

The parking lot at Kroger at 3507 West Cary Street in Richmond, Virginia is at a point where nearly every time I shop there I am approached and confronted in the parking lot by panhandlers or I see a panhandler confronting another customer in the lot, particularly in evenings, nighttime, and on weekends. This is happening so frequently that I can only conclude that there is something about the Kroger parking lot that attracts panhandlers, as I don't have this problem with any other businesses or lots nearby. I can only guess that panhandlers know to come to Kroger because of the size of the lot and because they know that management will not do anything about them. The service and atmosphere at this Kroger has never been anything to write home about (to be kind), but now, due to panhandlers and other unsavory appearing individuals, I don't even feel particularly comfortable even entering the store if I have to walk very far from my car to the door. If the management isn't even conscientious enough to provide a safe and secure parking lot, I guess I'll have to confine my shopping to Ellwood Thompson's, Fresh Market, or Kroger at Willow Lawn until Publix opens . read more

For convenience, I've shopped here for years. For decades spot was home to Richmond's International Safeway, later a Hannaford, and finally this warehouse type Kroger with high ceiling and poor lighting. Not kept up well, not clean and not inviting of your business. The first thing you notice entering the enclosed entry where the carts are kept is how bad it smells. The indoor-outdoor carpet is filthy, no matter how many times they sweep it. And this large foyer is visibly dirty, dusty and often just foul smelling. Not inviting. Remember this is a store which wants your business, not a soup kitchen. Things get worse...if you go at night after 10 pm - the door which leads into the store (to produce and deli) is locked. Instead, you enter in front of the cashier aisles, most of which are closed *and* blocked off, so that you have to walk up to where the other store entrance is - the one that's kept locked - to get to deli and fresh foods area. Again, remember this is a store which wants your business - supposedly. This is the type place where the parking lot lights near the cross-walk and store entrance have been out for at least a week now; where, this spring the mens restroom near the pharmacy had a urinal out of order & a toilet leaking onto the floor everytime you went in there for weeks on end. Water pooled on the floor, unclean facilities and a strong odor met you when you walked it. After about eight weeks, as winter gave way to spring, they did repair the leaking toilets, I think, but the restroom is often filthy. The store stays busy, and is usually well-stocked. A number of really friendly competent people work there and have been there many years. It's just not what you'd expect in the near west end of Richmond of which Carytown is a part. read more

I am new to Richmond and Kroger was my go to grocery store. I don't have a problem with the grocery store but the location and lack of parking is always a challenge. It is always packed no matter what time of day. It takes me forever to find a parking spot and to check out. The staff is always friendly and helpful. The layout is a little strange and I think the produce section lacks sometimes. If you go later at night the selection is worse across the board. They don't seem to constantly be restocking items consistently. It is convenient but a hassle. read more

This Kroger is generally okay - remodeled and clean with good prices and terrific selection. The staff ranges from hot to cold and I'm not sure why - sometimes the checkout "gang" is busily checking their cell phones, chatting and ignoring customers; other times they are happily bustling and greeting folks. There are a few great longtime customer service reps I enjoy seeing the once or twice a week I visit, like Thomas - he rocks. The pharmacy is extensive, I love the kitschy stuff in the seasonal area, kitchen items has a large section, the cheese selection is better than the new Fresh Market, and the produce is good. The one thing I'd ping them on is the self-serve hot food bar - no matter when you look at it, everything looks kinda to very old. Prices: I went to Walmart a few weeks ago (it's close to the office) and noticed Kroger's prices for the stuff I buy on a weekly basis are cheaper. Walmart beat Kroger in just a few things. Here's the strange part - despite the tidiness, despite the vastness of the selections and proximity to my favorite area of Richmond (Carytown) - nearly everyone shopping seems like they are in the race of their lives to get out of the place. I usually go to the Kroger on Broad but lately that store hasn't been up to par with everything (Dirty/spills etc). I always get stares and random guys looking at me when all I want to do is shop! So I figured I'd try the Carytown one. I was very impressed on how clean it was and there was also a small bistro area, where you can sit and eat lunch or whatever! One lady asked me if I needed anything which was nice because no one ever asked anything on the one on broad. It is a lot smaller but it's worth the trip! read more

Kroger is union so there's a good chance their employees aren't being exploited. Employees are friendly. Their muzak selection is eclectic : never thought I'd hear 'I wanna be sedated' by The Ramones in a grocery store. Kroger is civic-minded so there are opportunities to buy food for the food banks and donate to charities. Unfortunately, Kroger also allows the homophobic Salvation Army to collect in front of their store. Kroger pushes the iWireless program where you earn minutes when you buy there, but when I wanted to buy a ZTE Flash cell phone but they were out of stock. Trying to log into their Wi-Fi is an exercise in frustration - sometimes it simply doesn't work. Street people hanging out in the cafe can be a little too exuberant for my tastes. read more

This is my go-to grocery store for all the reasons stated by the other reviewers: A great selection. Locally sourced items. A large organic produce section. I find it puzzling how this store can miss some simple - and significant-customer service areas. For example: the shopping carts are in the parking lot and unavailable to shoppers The shopping carts need maintenance and the entire shopping experience is remembered for the bum cart. This Kroger is where I usually go food shopping when I don't want to shlep out Short Pump for Trader Joe's. There is a good section of food and the produce section is large. Two things that are annoying about the store are as follows. 1. All the same food items are not categorized in the same section and can be in any number of places. They group all the organic stuff off to the side and not with similar food in the aisles. Imported or ethnic foods are grouped separately so again you have to search in 2 dif locations. Its annoying. 2. Self check out is annoying. Pony up and pay for some employees to do checkout. I'm still paying the same amount and standing in line so why do I have to check myself out. read more

This may be temporary because there is no supermarket across the street for now, but when I stop there I have to fight for parking, there is limited fresh produce, the lines are long, and the store has an odd layout. Since this is the only full service grocery store in our neighborhood, we shop here every week. It is usually busy and some empty shelves, especially the dairy section. My biggest peeve is the lack of paper bags at the checkout. How can a major grocery store not have a stock of paper bags? Today was one of many times during this year that they were out of paper bags. A cashier told me once that the company that manufactures the bags hadn't sent them. I hate plastic bags and do not bring my own bags. I'm looking forward to a Publix being built across the street from the Kroger. read more

WOW...the renovations look great and I'm so excited that they are almost finished. The produce and prepared foods sections are AWESOME. When the renovations started I got really pissed off because I hate going to the occupied-Ukrops across the street and i'm not going to throw my money away at Ellwood Thompsons so I had to go to the lombardy store, but now that the store is almost complete...i'm back there in action! I just want to add my .02 about this Kroger... everything the previous reviewers have mntioned is true enough, but the thing I want to bump up an extra star for is this: I have never, ever had to wait very long in line here. Maybe the lines in this Kroger are partially in a time warp or something, but trust me, they move uncannily fast. More often than not I walk up to a totally free cashier with no line, even when the store is crowded. This means a lot to me, because when shoping at my usual Willow Lawn Kroger, I easily spend 5 to 10 minutes in line. So, kudos to the Carytown Kroger for its fast-paced checkout. I'm willing to learn and remember where things are in a store and map my trip accordingly, if I know I won't be so long imprisoned in the checkout queue, wasting brain cells on the tabloids. read more

Groceries it does well. But, wow, the rest of It looks like Russia. Cameras e-v-e-r-y-w-h-e-r-e! Warnings that you are being watched. Employee service announcements over the loudspeaker system - like "time to do your temperature logs". Only one manned register while there were lines at the self-checkouts. The kid bagging our groceries hated us for some reason (maybe because I started bagging before he arrived to take over?) and said the "f" word several times. What the what? Did he not like our bags? This place has the look of a store about to go under. They have cut staff back so much and installed cameras and self/checkouts in their place so that all that is left are angry, low paid staff trying to do the job of many. I feel bad for them which is why I do not use self-checkout but I certainly don't need the abuse. They sure are going to make the switch to Publix very easy. read more

Because of its proximity to my home, this is my grocery store of choice. The selection of produce is reasonable; the organic produce selection, sparse. Otherwise there's a reasonable variety of brands and items carried here, as well as some bulk foods which other locations do not have. The store staff is generally quite friendly, helpful, and available throughout the store, as are the more mature (older) checkout staff. I have observed some of the younger folks that work checkout and bagging are less than friendly, and more interested in their own conversations than attending to their customers. The parking lot at this particular location is absolutely awful. Shoppers park illegally on a regular basis either out of laziness (there are spaces available, but at the far end of the lot), or a desire to avoid circling the lot multiple times and nearly being hit by other cars driving like maniacs. Parking within spaces should be enforced in this lot-- when it's not, I've seen cars trapped in spaces without enough room to back out or make a turn. If you need to run into the store for a few items, avoid this location. read more

This is my fave Kroger in the Richmond area. It isn't the closest to where we live but I drive past the Lombardy St location to come here because the produce and natural sections are larger and better stocked. Ill stop by Lombardy for a couple quick things here and there but if I try to do major shopping trips there, there is always one or two things they don't have. For the average American Kroger shopper the differences may not be noticeable but if you're a vegetarian household like us about 90% of our groceries come from produce and natural sections and the Carytown location can't be beat. Oh and the other 10% of our groceries come from the wine section which is also larger and better stocked here! Oh and not specific to this location but just in general the fuel points rock. I buy as many gift cards here as possible (like all my Xmas shopping) when they have a 4x fuel points promotion and take in the fuel points. I paid two bucks per gallon last week, so satisfying read more

As far as Kroger's go, this is my favorite in the Richmond area. It isn't the biggest, I'd probably say that Staples Mill is, but I like it smaller. Even if it is smaller, there's a good selection of food. I can usually find the organic/ vegetarian food I need easily. The prices aren't bad. They have a better selection than the Lombardy/VCU Kroger. I just wish Kroger would get rid of plastic bags. read more

Really one major issue... Kroger can't keep up with demand. If you go in the evening, be prepared for empty shelves. The fresh produce is picked over and the remaining eggs are broken. They need to find a way to keep the shelves stocked. It would be better if a competitor like Publix would come into the area. Then Kroger wouldn't be overwhelmed. read more

Kroger Carytown has been in desperate need of competition for a few years. Once Publix opens across the street, I seriously doubt Kroger will remain a viable operation unless they drastically work to improve their customer service in all areas of the store, provide fresh produce, and do a better job of stocking the shelves. What is up with all the employees with bad attitudes? I feel like they must be the same employees working at Lowe's when I'm looking for some type of hardware - they avoid eye contact with you and run! I suspect Publix will charge more overall for groceries, but I'm willing to pay more for better service, a nicer store, and fresher food. OMG - the parking sucks! Great Kroger. I usually do my shopping mid-morning on a Monday or Tuesday, so I rarely experience a shortage of produce. I have been times later in the day/week when I wasn't able to get particular items. The employees are always super friendly. Not sure how I feel about the layout of the store, but overall, I'm a fan. read more
