We arrived at the store with two online orders that we wanted to return. We had all the receipt information that was provided in our two orders. When the cashier had scanned our first order to be returned, he advised us that they could only give us store credit. We asked why that was, as we had the receipt to the item. He told me that was all the system was offering him. We then wanted more clarification so we requested to speak to a manager. The manager who's name is Sophia helped us from there. She advised us that Barnes & Noble partners with Shopify and when it comes to online returns to the store the system is random when it comes to either refunding to the original form of payment or a store credit. We found this to be quite strange and inconvenient. All other retailers that receive a receipted return always put the money back on your original form of payment. They really need to fix this as it just inconveniences the customer. Being flexible, my Mom and I agreed to the store credit. We advised her that we would bring back the two returns after we have selected a few items from the sales floor. After about 45 minutes we came back to the register to checkout after we found some items to purchase. We approached a cashier by the name of Sandra. As I was putting the merchandise and two returns on the counter she had a disgusted look on her face. She then said something along the lines of "Yeah, you need to sort this." Just for all intents and purposes we had five items to purchase (three art kits and two books). For returns, we had a unopened DVD and a small book bag. I had also separated the returns from the merchandise we were going to buy. She acted like we had so much stuff. From there I told her that we would be starting with two online returns. I handed her the first return with the receipt. My Mom told her that we would like to return both of these items and get store credit and apply it to our purchase. She looked at her like she was lost and confused. I then tried to explain. She understood me and said "oh ok..see." and made a smug face at my Mom. She had a rude and condescending tone. She was acting like my Mom made zero sense, but yet I had just repeated what my Mom told her. At that point my Mom and I had it with her rude behavior. My Mom then said "There is no reason to be rude." She then told my Mom that she wasn't being rude at all and that she shouldn't be rude towards her. My Mom and I have been polite and tolerant towards her the moment we stepped up to her register. At that point my Mom had said that she was going to be speaking with the manager and told her that she wanted her returns back. Sandra then said "You don't need a manager, I will handle this." We told her that we would be speaking with the manager about this. We took our items and left the register. Sandra then leaves the register and cuts us off and said that she would get the manager. My Mom and I followed her and I told her that she was out of line for doing this and that we didn't need her help finding the manager. She then said "oh it's my pleasure." in a sarcastic tone. At this point, not only is Sandra treating us horribly she is also neglecting the other customers that are waiting in line. They only had two cahsiers at the front and she was one of them. She then vanished into the back. She was obviously trying to get her two cents in before we complained about her. A few minutes later, Sophia who is the manager on duty comes over to us. I told her everything that had happened and how Sandra treated us. She said that she would take care of us at the front herself. No apologies or anything. She didn't even seem phased by this unprofessional behavior. She ended up checking us out and applying our store credit to our purchase. My Mom and I are questionable in returning to this location until management starts caring about customer feedback, and when they start hiring people that have the proper maturity and people skills to work in a retail environment. I have been working in retail for several years and I have never encountered someone so unprofessional, disrespectful, and combative like Sandra. She clearly does not belong in a retail environment or any job for that matter that includes human interaction.
