We just stopped in to the Krispy Kreme on Ponce in Atlanta "Shaq's Shop" a little more then an hour before the store was to close. Only to be told we are out of donuts but the store is still open. Why? The last two visits we made to the location we tried to order the chocolate milk right at lunch time But once again was advised we are out. We have tried to support the location since it reopen but I have to say the service is port by the present workers, not even an apology or offered something else in the store Due to the inconvenience. The employees seem to not care if the location stay open or close down completely. Very poor customer service. Hallelujah - if you've missed the "Hott Fresh" light, your inner 5 year old will be delighted to see those beautiful, warm, melt-away donuts coming down the line, flipping, and being iced before your eyes! There's no way you're NOT eating one as soon as they're in possession. BIG "heads-up:" instead of in-person counter service and selection, the rebuilt location has a Self Service order area immediately upon entry. Unless you walk in very slowly, and are looking for the station, to the right of the door, you won't notice it. And if your experience was like mine this morning, none of the staff are inclined to tell you, as they are too busy buzzing around filling the orders already placed. However, besides their original glazed donuts, the other donuts are a hit or miss. I have frequently gotten day-old donuts with really dry breading. I love Krispy Kreme. I grew up in the Piedmont Triad region of North Carolina, the birthplace of Krispy Kreme doughnuts, so I do have a small bit of pride when supporting my "hometown's" product. While local Atlanta area establishments like Sublime Doughnuts and Dutch Monkey Doughnuts are stellar in their own rights, it's still hard to beat a classic Krispy Kreme Original Glazed doughnut in my eyes. Go to the store when the red neon "Hot Now" sign is on for the freshest and best-tasting doughnuts. Even if you don't eat them fresh off the line, they're still delicious. I like how the doughnut boxes have microwave heating instructions. Apparently, Krispy Kreme has discovered that 8 seconds is the magic time your doughnut should be in the microwave. I've tested this out many times on a variety of microwaves and it works really well. The doughnuts come out a little bit softer than the fresh hot ones in the store, but they are still every bit as heavenly. Prices for doughnuts at this Krispy Kreme on Ponce De Leon are as follows: One Dozen Original Glazed: $7.55 (or $0.63 per doughnut) One Dozen Assorted: $8.63 (or $0.72 per doughnut) One Doughnut (any variety): $0.99 It's a good deal if you ask me. I prefer Krispy Kreme doughnuts over most other brands of doughnuts (Dunkin' Donuts being one of them) because they're lighter, softer, and airier. Other doughnuts have a more dense and "breadier" consistency, which is normally fine -- it's just Krispy Kreme doughnuts are better. On more than one occasion, I have split a box of a dozen Original Glazed doughnuts with one other friend and ate them in one sitting. I've tried just about all of the standard varieties Krispy Kreme offers. Some of my favorites and ones I recommend include the Glazed Cruller (much like the Original Glazed but with a thicker consistency and textured twist), Chocolate Sprinkles, and Cookies and Kreme (chocolate doughnut with vanilla frosting and chocolate chips on top). The doughnuts with filling (e.g. raspberry) aren't bad either. In North Carolina, you can get a Cheerwine Krispy Kreme doughnut. I wish they offered it in Georgia. Ponce Krispy Kreme is located in a somewhat sketchy area. One time, a random stranger walked up to me as I left the store and asked, "Can I interest you in some gold?" He opened up one side of his coat to reveal a bunch of gold jewelry and chains. WTF? Are you kidding me? I politely declined and went on my way. Like most other Krispy Kremes, Ponce Krispy Kreme has an open kitchen, so you can see the doughnut-making process. I find it fun and fascinating to watch. read more

This is one of the oldest Atlanta area Krispy Kreme Doughnut locations still standing and viable. It can be found at 295 Ponce De Leon Ave NE, Atlanta GA 30308. It's also the first Krispy Kreme that I ever visited during a short stay in Atlanta before moving here in the mid-80s. Until I had my first hot donut, I had no idea what I've been missing, growing up with the likes of cake donuts found at my local, small-town bakery. We'll have none of that now - the Krispy Kreme doughnut (and yes they use the proper spelling here - none of that do-nut label you find at other, inferior establishments) is produced with dough that expands when heated, providing a delicate, less-cake interior texture. Add the hot glaze and you have heaven! Full of neon lights and brilliant graphics, this KK still have its classic facade - none of that current Dwell-modern look here! This is still an ongoing operation where you can see huge conveyer-belt equipment that moves the doughnuts through various stages until purchase. It's quite a treat to stand on the other side of the glass partition and watch the skilled workers make magic in milled-flour and confectioners sugar! Old Fourth Ward can be a little sketch, especially at night - if you intend to visit this delightful location plan your outing during the day, or better yet, near twilight so you can enjoy the incredible light show. On weekends the interior is often full of balloons and free paper hats - do partake as it's another way they make the visit special. Or better yet, take a trip to the Varsity first and down a couple of flattened chili dogs before coming here for dessert. You can then swap hats and have two keepsakes! Service here is very good although at times the lines can get fairly long. I like to get a dozen (make sure you bring friends!) of the glazed (and maybe a second dozen of the specialty doughnuts as they often have a 2-for-one special on the boxed dozen) but really, the glazed are where-it's-at. Or better yet, get whatever flavor is coming off the conveyer belt - which brings me to the "hot doughnuts now" sign - look for that fabulous red beacon to ensure you're getting-the-goods. For the glazed - I can do 2, maybe 3 before my sugar levels spike to atmospheric levels (one isn't quite enough and three may be a bit too much). Bite into a hot doughnut and allow it to melt in your mouth. If there's a heaven on earth, this might just be a brief taste. (longer review on my food blog) read more

We were excited to visit the rebuilt shop at 8:55 pm( one hour before closing) for an after dinner donut and coffee. Went through the drive thru to deal with a rude and hurried worker. No hot glazed donuts, no chocolate glazed no coffee. No apologies just a bad attitude. Told them it would be a nice place for a donut shop and drove off. Kinda shocked that i've yet to review this Krispy Kreme located off of ponce, which is an awesome one to visit. If you go inside (don't go to the drive thru....go inside especially if you see the red sign lit), you'll see the conveyor belt of donuts going from raw dough, to a fried oil bath, to getting glazed all before being popped into your mouth. We came on a Friday evening, when the latest snow storm hit Atlanta, and this Krispy Kreme was one of a handful of places still open and thriving. When you walk in like we did, that donuts smell just filled the air, and we knew we were home. We ordered a three pack of 3 freshly glazed donuts (we tried to get one donut off the line before it was glazed, and they wouldn't allow it) for about 3 bucks, and talk about melt in your mouth fresh! Both the interior and parking lot are surprisingly larger than I would have thought, allowing for a number of cars to park, and also allowing for a number of people to sit and have a donut....or just donut watch near the glass wall that separates you from the action. Beyond the glazed allure of krispy kreme, there's still a ton of specialty donuts, seasonal donuts, and chocolate glazed donuts. Sadly these do not touch the conveyor belt, but they still are tasty! The problem with this location was in spite of there not being a ton of people in line, we just stood there waiting on someone.....anyone to help us. We both looked at each other and said what's going on?? After we did order, we waited to pay, and were again standing there waiting. Could've been an issue with the weather and the large influx of customers in the drive thru since other places were closed, but it was bizarre to just stand there for minutes. I was all set to give them 4 stars, but because of the long waits, i've got to bump them down a star. But i'm going to give these guys the benefit of the doubt just for being open when places were closing left and right, and for still running their donuts to give us fresh ones, so if/when I go back, they can easily get their 4th star back. Absolutely terrible! I mean that with everything in me. It 7:15am. I see a customer walk out. I walk up to the door. It's locked. Then an employee coming in to work walk up and starts beating on the glass cussing at his co-workers because they are not coming to the door. After all that someone comes to the door, he walks in, the looks back at me and says "The inside is closed." This mutha fucka could have told me that shit while I standing there. Just moved to the area and was super excited to see a Krispy Kreme in the area, so I made it a point to stop on my way home. It's about 10pm- I'm in the drive thru, and I can hear it's gonna be a wild experience. I'm hearing cursing, swearing, all kinds of profanity on the microphone. Let me start by saying I LOVE donuts and I specially grew up loving Krispy Kreme donuts. With that being said, I would avoid this location. I ordered a variety pack of the new mini donuts and scheduled the pick up for 90 minutes later. I was really excited about the mini donuts and specifically ordered the variety pack because of the pink glazed donuts for a friend who is having a baby girl. I showed up to pick up them up and it was evident no one had even looked at our order yet because there were a total of 3 mini chocolate donuts in the entire store (the pack we ordered comes with a variety of 16 donuts.) The woman who was working just stated the quantity she had and stared at me. I asked what they usually do in this situation. Could they cancel the order, can they swap it with something else, etc? Again more silence. I asked if she could possibly do a variety pack of regular size donuts which was actually cheaper than the mini donuts we had paid for. She said yes and asked which donuts to include. We just asked for whatever was in the normal variety pack. She said they only had glazed, pumpkin spice and cream filled, but we saw racks of donuts in the back being packed into boxes. We ended up leaving with a box of donuts from what she had in the front, but took one bite and immediately threw the box out. The donuts were stale, cold and the flavor was off. With so many delicious donut shops in Atlanta, I would skip this one. read more

The staff were very pleasant and fun when we visited in the early afternoon, but pretty opposite of that when we visited in the evening after dinner. This is a large location and they have a good selection. They have really cute souvenirs too! I fell in love with their new raspberry filled donuts. They last well for a couple of days too! My husband's favorite was the lemon filled donut. This place is right next to Nancy's Chicago Pizza (give it a try!) so that is a bonus too. read more

ATMOSPHERE/ DÉCOR Upon entering, you'll notice that this location has a narrow interior with high top tables all around and a glass window to view the donut process. Watch these circular beauties slowly get fried and glazed right before your eyes! A small step exists, too, for dem shorties. *Note: I love the Old Fourth Ward, but it does have its share of misfits. It seems like this location has shady things go down right in front of the store, occasionally. For example, on my most recent visit, my family saw a drug deal go down right before our eyes! (Meth, I think.) I'm surprised neither of them purchased any donuts, too! lol. II. DONUTS Forget sprinkles, fillings, and all that. It's all about the original glazed, and when it comes hot off the conveyer belt, it's quite melt-in-your-mouth sinful, and it's like fulfilling all your sugar needs for the entire year, ever. Un freaking believable! I'm visiting ATL for the weekend and stumble upon this place upon my return trip from the children's museum. I'm super excited because I love Krispy Kreme but haven't had it in probably 5 years. I make a u turn and pull into the drive thru like I'm trying to lose a tail. There were about 3 vehicles ahead of me but I thought nothing of it because the parking lot was empty. When I finally got to the drive thru to place my order the woman / employee said "can you come inside because I'm very busy right now." I told her I couldn't because there are about vehicles behind me as well as the ones ahead waiting for their order. She responded "ok but its gon take a while." 34 minutes later I pulled up to the window. I was shocked and appalled to be greated by a young woman with what appeared to be cold sores on both corners of her mouth and on her eyelids! I sat in my car speechless. Why on earth would management not send this girl home immediately if she showed up to work at a food establishment with such an affliction? She tried to confirm my order but I couldn't even concentrate. I couldn't take my eyes off the nasty cluster of Nestle crunch bumps at the corners of her mouth and on her eyelids. She passed me the food and drinks and I'm watching carefully to see where she is touching the cups to make sure I don't touch in the same place. I can't help but wonder if she had been scratching her rash before handling my food. I drove out of there totally grossed out. I couldn't eat anything that I had purchased. All the excitement I felt about the donuts was long gone. The annoyance I felt at waiting over 30 minutes in the drive thru was a distant memory. I've gotten to eat many a delicious doughnut, so my standards when it comes to these deep-fried carb pillows is quite extraordinary. This Krispy Kreme in Atlanta, satisfied me but failed to be any sort of revelation. We didn't get the glazed doughnuts right off the conveyor belt, which I'm sure would have made a difference, but probably not by much. The glaze IMO, is too sweet and I didn't like uber sticky, icky feel on your fingertips from all that syrup-y sugar. We had a variety box of 12 doughnuts, and nothing truly stood out (including the new Key Lime varieties). These Krispy Kreme doughnuts are pretty standard and quite similar to Dunkin Donuts if you ask me. Overall, 2.5 Stars! P.S. - If you truly want an amazing out-of-this-world doughnut experience, you need to go to DOUGH in Brooklyn, NY, Federal Donuts in Philly, or even Doughnut Plant in NYC. The Hot Sign was lit on an early weekday morning during National Coffee Day. Got one 12 oz hot coffee and original glazed donut and pumpkin spice donut. This was our freshest experience with the Krispy Kreme original glazed donut. It was warm and very, very moist. My bf thought the pumpkin spice donut was super inferior to the one from Revolution Donuts in every possible way, but I still enjoyed it.
