It was the day of my "I Don't Karate, But I Know Karaoke" CMYE at Wang Chung's and I needed to find a snack to provide for a room full of hungy singing yelpers. I thought about getting a few platters of food from Sam's Club or Costco but in the end decided on sushi. I felt like it would go with Wang Chung's asian theme bar and it was going to be much more convenient than waiting through the hell which is warehouse style shopping on the weekend before Thanksgiving. My Yelp gathering was in Waikiki so I decided to order two platters from Kozo Sushi on Kapahulu. No one likes warm fish right? I called an hour before pick-up time to place my order and the guy that picked up the phone kept giggling as I told him what I wanted. It got to be really annoying and I finally asked him "What's so funny because I'd like to know what the joke is." He apologized and handed the phone to another guy with better phone manners. I went to pick up my platters and it was ready-to-go. I asked him for 20 extra pairs of chopsticks because I had forgotten my bag at home. The man-boy at the counter provided them and rang me up. Overall Kozo didn't blow anyone away but I thought it was a nice little pupu to share during karaoke. It's packed with flavor and ingredients- spicy ahi and shrimp tempura with crunchies and spicy mayo sauce! Sushi was delicious, don't get me wrong. However, we ran into the most arrogant and rude cashier ever! It was my boyfriend's first time ordering a dish and he wasn't too sure what was in it and decided to order it anyway. He ordered the S-nigiri dish thinking that the "S" stood for spicy ahi. He proceeded to ask what was included and the cashier rolled her eyes while explaining the types of sushi in it like we should've already known! Really? I'm sorry, but I didn't think we were expected to know. We were then a little confused on another type of nigiri and she continued with the attitude. She raised her voice and talked to us like we were idiots. That's when we decided to NEVER come here again. Soon afterwards, an old man (who did not understand English) orders a platter for another day. He wasn't too sure which day so this cashier continued to argue with him, saying "you don't know what you're talking about!" "You want to pick it up tomorrow morning or tomorrow??!!" Recently, I had to bring a few dishes for a graduation potluck. Since one girl was allergic to cheese, I had to be a bit more creative. It can be quite challenging to find quick, takeout/catered dishes that don't have cheese (& doesn't need to be warmed up). Pizza? No. Sandwich tray? No. Costo Turkey Wraps? No! After scrolling through Yelp, I was sold on a Sukeroku platter from Kozo. Simple, cheese-less and a perfect compliment to Chicken Katsu. It's a plus that it's also very reasonably price at $19.50. Total rip off! Went at 7:30 tonight, one half hour before closing and was totally ripped off. The Ahi lovers plate was partially frozen including the crumbling rice. Must of been in the freezer for tomorrow. Called back and complained and they knew what I was talking about. They told me to bring it back and I said not worth my time now. Won't ever go back and hope others learn from this. Rather go 7-11 for the plastic wrapped maki rolls for 4-5 bucks. Went back today and they courteously refunded me. Sometimes you just need a platter of sushi. After all, what local style gathering or potluck isn't complete without a large platter of maki and inari sushi? Or you know when someone is splurging on the family or it really is a special occasion when they bring out the nigiri sushi! Well, there are three spots that the come to mind when a sushi platter is in order (note: I said PLATTER, not tray!) and Kozo is one of them. It helped define the sushi scene in Honolulu with its classic mixtures of maki/inari or when the need arises, the famous nigiri. Now, sushi platters are notorious for not being the greatest and the best, and you shouldn't go in with that expectation. You're going to get decent sushi, nicely prepared, and set amidst green plastic decorations and in a 24" round container with a plastic protective covering. Now, the sushi isn't the greatest, but it is decent. It's price is hard to beat, and when you happen to be in town, the location can often be overlooked. However, parking can be a bit of a hassle since it is located in the same mall as Sweet Home Cafe and a few other local eateries that help define Moilili. Like I said, it isn't the greatest, however it isn't the worse and with prices it is alright. read more

Listen.. I am probably one of the biggest kozo sushi fans of all time. I grew up in Kaneohe, going to the one in Windward City at least a few times a week for years. Recently the Kaneohe location has only been open Wednesday- Saturday, so today I was already in town and decided to give this location a try. Let me tell you the difference is night and day!! And maybe/hopefully I just came on a bad day... It's confusing that the same chain can have such a drastic quality and taste difference across the island. The fish was mushy and slimy, the sauce was not even close to what I grew up with!! It breaks my heart to say anything bad about Kozo but this made me sad It is 200% worth the drive to the Kaneohe location that has and will continue to change my life with the deliciousness it creates every day. read more

Although service is quick, their customer service is horrible. I have been to this location to grab a quick bite when I am in the area, but each time I am never given a simple "thank you" when I complete and receive my order. The food itself is really nothing special. Just very ordinary and basic. This is why I have never gone out of my way to give this South King location my business. This is not good sushi. But as my wife says, "It's good if you just need a cheap fix." But to me, I disagree. We stopped by here to pick up some sushi to eat with Udon we were going to have at home. We got the S-Nigiri and the Battera sushi. The Battera is mackerel but the actual mackerel layer is made up of a bunch of fish pieces mashed together, and it's tough, not soft, as if it had been cooked. It has a layer of something edible on top, but I guess that's how battera is supposed to be. As for the S-Nigiri, they were all just ok, except for this one piece. I was like, "What is THAT?!" And wifey says, "That's salmon." "WHAT?!" It was very pale, almost translucent, definitely not orange. Personally, I wouldn't eat here again, but it is definitely cheap and I know that appeals to wifey, but I'd want to spend just a bit more and get better sushi. read more

I come here for convenience & for their Saba battera. They are the only take-out sushi joint that has this item. I'm from Japan, so I love that stuff. Everyone thinks it's nasty & vinegary...but it's comfort good to me. Their sushi platters look good & affordable. I'll have to check it out next time. They were fast I'll give them that. Buuuut ... we ordered a Aloha platter and the salmon was a weird cooked color like they had to defrost it fast so they warmed it up also the ahi was really hard and dry like a rubber texture. I probably won't order from them again read more

Out of all the Kozo Sushi's I tried, this one is my favorite and tastiest. I usually get the dragon maki. Price is reasonable and I always get my sushi pretty quickly. The tempura is usually hot and crispy. I'm getting hungry. read more

Sorry but this kozo is terrible. got the spicy ahi donburi deluxe or super bowl it was $8.50 and was terrible. big cubes of prev frz ahi that were unseasoned and tasteless. there was 2 tiny green onions and sauce was bland. Side note Kapahulu kozo is good!!! And they use fresh ahi!!!!!! read more

Though the atmosphere can get get uncomfortable, those three specials (tsunami, dragon and forgot the other one, was it spicy ahi?) are so good that it shutps up my complaints. It's simple to get sushi and go. read more

Last week I tried Kozo Sushi for the first time but the food was just ok. I ordered the Philly maki, the sushi roll with salmon and cream cheese. The rice was too salty and the cream cheese tasted bitter. However, I would rate Kozo three stars because the sushi came quick, it was less than a five minute wait. read more

I come here when I need a quick, cheap sushi fix (inari, crab/cucumber roll, futomaki, etc.) If I wanted anything more complicated, I would go elsewhere, but for simple things, you just can't beat Kozo. Food is consistent and comes out pretty quickly, especially if you're like me and always order really easy things. The Chinese lady at the register is not the quickest, but I can get in and out in about 5 minutes, perfect timing to inhale the food in my car before class. There is usually parking in the three stalls right in front during the day, making it almost as convenient as a drive-thru. Seriously, when are we going to get a sushi drive-thru in town? I guess I was craving sushi so badly that I hyped myself up for it. I ordered a Dragon Roll maki but I found out it wasnt the kind with unagi and avocado on top. It had spicy ahi instead... The sushi is pretty cheap in my opinion, under $7 per maki sushi. Some sushi packs are under $4. My aunty ordered a sushi platter for New Years Day and one of the interesting rolls was the BLT roll.
