Story time: At first I thought it (the order) was a mistake because I ordered off of door dash and the bag it came in was just an unmarked plastic bag; so I reordered but received the same thing. I was disappointed given that I was expecting 8 individual samosas (as shown on the Bengali sweets website), so I gave the store a call. When the owner picked up, he was nothing short of rude and expressed that he couldn't explain anything over the phone and that I should come to the store in person. I was free so I made the trip and when I went, he made no attempt to explain or rectify the misunderstanding, he was rude and patronizing (saying I am ignorant and don't understand the culture because I'm not Bengali which may be true but I did my research so I thought the comment was rather offensive), and he was trash talking me and a fellow customer (who stood up to him for me when he made me cry) to a customer who walked in during all of this. In total, me and another customer (who had insisted on buying the 8 samosas I tried to order) spent 1.5 hours at the store waiting for the food on the owner's promise that the food would take "five more minutes". I wish this experience hadn't happened because me and my community genuinely love the food there but the owner's behaviour and actions are hard to ignore.

When we got there, the restaurant was packed to do its limited seating. We went back to the car and tried to figure out where else to go, but luckily, a group had just came out of the restaurant, so we ended up eating at Sushi Ai after all. Once inside, we were seated at a table that still had dirty dishes on it from the previous people that ate at our table. After about several minutes, someone came to clear the plates off the table and wiped it down. We were provided with a menu, as well as a menu with lunch combo specials. We decided to order the croquette ($2.75), "tacoyaki" ($5.25), shrimp tempura ($9.50), bakudan tuna roll ($4.75), chopped surf clam roll ($6.25), spider roll ($8.75), and tiger roll ($12.50). The first to arrive was the croquette and "tacoyaki" (which I assume was a spelling error, but it appears that the restaurant and take-out menu are both spelled this way). Before I continue with my review on the food, I would like to add that the service was subpar and the server was not attentive at all. When the server had given us the croquette and takoyaki, she just left afterwards. We were not given any napkins or chopsticks and it was really hard to get her attention, so that we could our chopsticks to enjoy our food. Also, not once did she come by our table to see how our food was or if our water needed to be refilled, even though our cups were empty. Now back to the food. The croquette was a single large piece that was cut in half and served with teriyaki sauce. Inside, the croquette was filled with mashed potato and corn. I don't usually order croquette because of how simple it is to make, but my friend had wanted to order it. I ended up trying it and thought it was good and well seasoned. The takoyaki came in 6 pieces and was served with a drizzle of mayo and spicy sauce. The takoyaki was smaller than the ones I'm used to having and taste-wise, it was okay, neither good nor bad. I probably wouldn't order it again. Next came all the sushi rolls and the shrimp tempura. The shrimp tempura was okay, it had a nice batter to it, not too thick. However, one thing that bugged me was that they do not devein the shrimp. No one likes to take a bite into a shrimp tempura to see the black intestinal tract still intact in the shrimp, which is kind of off-putting. The tiger roll was okay, the only thing is the sauce used and the amount that was used was a bit overwhelming. The spider roll was also okay, the soft shell crabs had a thicker batter to it than most places of I've seen and had from. I did, however, really loved the chopped surf clam roll. I don't normally order surf clam, so I was expecting much, but it was a delightful surprise. The tuna bakudan was so-so, and a bit dry (due to the lack of sauce). Overall, I'd probably wouldn't be returning here again because of the service and the food. Also, it seems like they were a bit understaffed, as the few tables that next to us had left a long time ago, but the tables were left uncleared and uncleaned.

They have a lot of combo platters - you know the rice plus 2 other items selections. But what I really like here is their "bun" or vermicelli bowl for $7 after tax. It comes in the bigger square styrofoam container and you get a portion that's similar to what you get a sit down Vietnamese restaurant. You get 2 big spring rolls (not veg as it has pork), 2 pork hashes and a generous portion of grilled pork along with the vermicelli, cucumbers and shredded carrots. You can even add on crushed peanuts to the meat too! Ask for some hot sauce as they have pre-portioned chili paste to go too. The dish is pretty satisfying especially since this is a fast food concept in a food court. The spring rolls were not soggy and were well sized, the pork hash and grilled pork had good flavours. Their ice coffee is okay...I prefer a stronger coffee. I've also had their beef pho - I didn't love their broth so I wouldn't order it again but the vermicelli bowls are delicious and at a great price!

Regardless it's the raw fish stuff that you need to go for, as it's excellent here. They have daily specials posted on the wall that are worth considering. The day I went they had the aburi salmon, which was very delicious, especially for Winnipeg standards. Service was excellent here. There's also a small shop that sells unique Japanese frozen food and other goods that's worth visiting. Definitely recommend this place for Japanese food that can rival some of the top tier places in Vancouver and Toronto.

Needless to say from other reviews, Sushi Gozen is located inside St. Vital Centre, and focuses on Japanese and Korean cuisine. I had the Tonkotsu Ramen, which I was told they recently introduced their ramen line in the restaurant. The ramen and chashu was okay, however the broth wasn't hot enough. Also for $12.25 + tax it's definitely on the steeper side of cost for ramen. Service was good, though maybe because it wasn't too busy when I went. I'll give the benefit of the doubt for this one. Winnipeg does need better Japanese restaurants though. Unfortunately this place doesn't take the cake.

Expect your appetizers to be 5 minutes before your wicked expensive sushi rolls and then don't forget, it's that kind of place where you even need to take your check up to the cashier on the way out to pay. If you want basic rolls, slow service and just to fill your belly up, go for it. Otherwise you have been warned. Save your money and hit the food court.
