I tried this place yers ago and was unimpressed. Tonight I thought I'd give it another chance. Someone was mopping the floor, but not with the pleasant smelling cleaner. It smelled very musty in there. The place is old and could use a remodel. Looks aside, I saw one guy up front on the phone wearing the filthiest apron. I saw reddish sauce, rice, and other unrecognizable particles covering his apron. I immediately got grossed out. Ordered my food, sat down, and less than two minutes later, got my food. No way it was fresh. I ordered pork chow mein. Yes, the portion was huge, but it lacks in flavor and the meat was dry. None of the photos that previous reviewers have posted looked appetizing. Best Chinese restaurant in town? Tsing Tao on Willow and Shaw. So flavorful, fresh, delicious. Best hot and sour soup I've ever had. The staff is very friendly. Try it! read more

I am very unimpressed with this Chinese Food restraunt. I typically love Chinese food and I am a college student so I am not picky but this place was a mess. I ordered online and went to pick it up when I was told my order was ready. When I got there they couldn't find my order so they had to remake my food. The box the food was in started breaking on the way home. The noodles and rice were over done and the sweet and sour chicken didn't have nearly enough sauce. Worst Chinese food I had in my entire life. I was there the first time this evening - I ordered the BBQ-Beef plate with Almond Chicken, Fried rice and chow mein for take out. First of all - the plate was really heavy and loaded. Feeds at least 3 people and the guy who served me was really friendly. And the price was very cheap - 7 something $. Now the food: - BBQ Beef Skewers: 2 of them - deep fried to the very end - hard as a rock - not eatable.... - Almond Chicken: 4 pieces - at least 80% fat and tendons. Not even seasoned - not eatable ... - Fried rice: totally dry, no taste at all ... - Chow mein: over cooked white noodles, fried on one side - not seasoned. No sauce, nothing. Vegetables were on top of the noodles. 80 % celery, carrots and onions(?) ... Overall: the food did not even taste Asian. Even with soy sauce on it. And for the "Almond Chicken" - there were 3 whole almonds on top of the vegetables - what a joke. Maybe I just got the one bad plate today or a new cook - but the quality of the meat and the preparation of the rice and noodles is not even worth one star .... This is my favorite Chinese food place ever. The food is so good and you can add more meat to your liking. The pot stickers are huge and the egg rolls are even bigger than any other place I know of. Everyone needs to make this their to go place for Chinese food. Closed on Mondays which is when I crave it the most. read more

Absolutely delicious and massive servings if you go the full order route. I traditionally get a half order of pork chow mein and a soda. The service is rather quick as well. First time trying Kowloon Kitchen. The restaurant is located in a strip mall on the corner of Clovis Avenue and Shaw, behind the Carl's Jr. There seemed to be plenty of parking. They have fairly decent prices, around $7 per item (other places range $8-$10). Their menu had quite a selection as compared to other places. Not a whole lot of seating inside, could seat 15, but not more. The decor was the run of the mill "we're a Chinese restaurant" nicknacks, nothing really impressive. You can see behind the counter into the kitchen, and it can get quite loud. The lady behind the counter has a very thick accent, so you may need to repeat your order multiple times if you are picking up take out. If that bothers you, don't come here. We ordered the orange chicken over rice and the mandarin dinner plate with an extra order or fried shrimp. I personally found the orange chicken quite scrumptious, not too crispy but sweet none the less. My dining partner is a bit of a picky eater and didn't care for the mandarin plate as much; the egg fu yung looked a bit burnt, and the sweet and sour chicken was neon, but the rice and chow mien were great. We loved the shrimp, very crispy. They weren't cleaned of the digestive vein but I didn't taste it. This isn't China town status cuisine, but this is better than some Chinese food I have tried. Considering its affordability, this is good for those on a budget who really want Chinese food. I would like to give this 4 stars, but there were too many factors that brought it down a notch. Don't let that stop you from trying this place, though. Personally I think I will come by here again. read more

Normally, I would give them a great review. I and my family have been going to Kowloon for 30 years. Today I called and placed an order. Got there just before it was ready and paid my $6.40 tab and took my change. Unfortunately for me, I did not count my change when the young woman gave it to me. After I got home and took my change out of my pocket, I realized that I only received $3 and change for a $20. bill. I know it was a $30. because I just went to the ATM. I called them and their reesponse was, "I'm sorry but we can't give you money. You have to count your change when you are here." This business practice is completely unacceptable. I honestly don't think I've ever been so upset with a food establishment before. We came in maybe about 30 mins before closing but they still had guests and yet they seemed like they were just trying to rush us all out the door. They made mine and my boyfriends order wrong, the noodles tasted sour and mushy, my fried shrimp tasted like it wasn't cooked all the way through that I had to stop eating it after the first bite and I was scared to eat the rest. I'm a huge egg roll person and these were the worst egg rolls I've ever tried to eat because they were not cooked thoroughly. I understand the hurry of wanting to leave close to closing time but when you undercook and mess up my entire order it's hard to ever convince anyone to come here. I tried calling to hopefully get my order remade or hopefully a refund because I would've been happy to give back my undercooked food but after 9 attempts of the phone being picked up and hung up on. It's safe to say I will NEVER return to this place. And I will advise anyone else who cares about food safety and how it's prepped. I have no idea what people classify as good food, or when they've eaten this so called "miraculous food", because the one time I made the mistake of coming here because of the "good reviews" it was seriously "fear factor" disgusting. I went in to order, granted they have great prices and big portions but the kitchen was atrocious . The grill top looked black and had charcoaled up chunks in the corners, there was a little kid playing in the kitchen and that alone started to turn me off of the place. But I figured, hey it's a small local business it's a probably a family thing. So I got my food, didn't take too long (15 mins or so) and got home. I ordered 2 plates, some of what I remember, consisted of orange chicken, chow mein, fried rice, and egg foo yung. So, I open the chow mein and it just looked like a gooey mess, the noodles were beyond overcooked, and it was the slimiest mess I've ever tried to get down, there was chicken in it that was so coated with gooey gel that I'm 99% positive it couldn't have been chicken...The egg foo yung was so overcooked it was like eating a hasbrown of burnt, yet soggy bread. And the fried rice, (like seriously how could you mess up fried rice?!), tasted like smoke, like it was cooked in a fire with the little charcoaled pieces, of god knows what, on the grill mixed in. Thank god the food is cheap because I literally dumped all of it. I do not understand how this place has amazing reviews and how there's not been lawsuits for food poisoning or contamination. Decided to try based upon reviews. The food was delicious!! I recommend the "Special Chow Mein"! The Egg Rolls must have been on steroids because they were huge!! And very tasty as well. My only gripe was the Orange chicken-Seems that the chicken was a bit overdone and the Orange sauce was suspiciously close to Tangerine chicken and the sauce was a bit too sweet for my palate. I must admit that with a name like this, I had to be very skeptical. In fact, if not for it being one of my closest friends that took me the first time, I probably would have never tried it. He told me it was the best Chinese food in Clovis. And .....well.....I'd have to say that he is correct. Is it the best Chinese joint in the area....... no. There are a few sit down places that are better (Golden Dynasty and Kirin Restaurant to name a few). However, as chinese take out places go, this is the #1 place in the area that I have found thus far. As far as ordering, at first it was a little confusing so I'll explain it now. EVERYTHING on the menu is served over rice (fried or steamed), fried noodles, or in Chow Yuk. I did not notice this the first 3 or 4 times I ate here so I always got one of the specials. However, lately I've been trying different dishes over rice and I have not found a bad one yet. Good portions, good quality, and good prices. Service.....sometimes they seem a little hurried or slightly annoyed, but isn't that the way it is in most Chinese take-out places. However, if you start to come regularly and they recognize you, they are pretty friendly. PS - either bring cash or order for two or more. Our family has returned to the Fresno/Clovis Area two years ago and we went to order here at Kowloon's never had any disappointments. The food to us is always good and in large portions they do have lots of vegetables with the meat and it is usually well balanced between the two. This is not a place to sit to eat during rush hours and it is a take out food place. Whoever had the notion that is a sit down place to be waited on must be bonkers because it clearly states "Take Out Food". We have sat down to eat here because we did not want to wait until we get home but we know not to expect them to serve us. The people are very respectful and they know how to cook we have seen many changes in the last 20 years but they carry the same food flavor and tradition as their parents. We like to order here at least twice a month and still think it is the Best Take Out Chinese Food Place in Fresno County Area. read more

Today I placed a to go order for about $40 worth of food and in the short amount of time it took me to drive to Kowloon, my food was hot and waiting for me. This place has the best tasting food and the portions are more than generous. Last night my mom got take out from this place, she got orange chicken, Mongolian beef, and peanut chicken dishes, also 3 eggrolls. It smelt great when she brought it home but the food was so chewwy it was disgusting. I managed to eat a fair amount of the orange chicken and I felt sick the morning after. My mom also did because of the eggrolls. So we decided to come back and get a refund, we brought the food like the lady told us and she said we would be given a full refund. However, we have been here a while now for them to figure out how to refund the money. My question is, why would she guarantee a refund if she didn't know how to do it? This place has pretty delicious food. The one thing that kinda throws me off is the portion of the entree on some of the dishes. On The Terriaki Chicken and the beef and broccoli dishes, the servings or meat are very good. But on other dishes such as sesame chicken, you get like 4-5 small pieces of chicken. This is good basic Cantonese food. The house noodles have a Lotof everything( beef,chicken.shrimp, vegetables). We have tried all the menu items over the years and found them all to be very good and satisfying. As to the criticism of employees arguing, the owner always speaks loudly and has a harsh voice and only two volume settings, off-loud. In order to be heard the others have to respond in kind(this is very typical Chinese behavior, and yes I am Chinese). If anyone wants to name places that define a Town or City, Kowloon Kitchen is one of those places. I am in my fifties, and as a child my family would come here to get Chinese food , when the other place was called, " Gay Way" Chinese food, Of course there has been changes through the years and sometimes the food is excellent and other times you are not 100 per cent happy. Still the food is good, and to be right up front with Chinese speaking cooks is priceless, with a couple tables there to sit down and eat. There was a dead fly in one of the cookie containers, then after the lady touched my money and gave me my change she went over to a counter and started wrapping paper wrapped chicken! I find the amount of food that they serve is exceptional. However the quality of the food is not acceptable. Often overly covered with sugary or fat-laden sauces devoid of subtlety or quality. The meats are often coated in a fake-tasting coating full of unnecessary food coloring. I've patronized KK since I was a child - tho I no longer live in Clovis. It has always been the same. I'd have to say that the one thing that irks me the most is that KK (as well as most other Chinese food places) continue to use styrofoam and plastic bags when other alternatives exist - alternatives that are recyclable or compostable. Its time for them to move into the 21st century and dump the plastic and styrofoam. They also need to update their restaraunts decorations and painting - it looks like it did when I was 10 and that was 40+ years ago. It looks like they're just interested in making money and refusing to spend money on updating their interior and on recyclable/compostable To-Go containers. LOSE the plastic bags! read more
