a woman in a restaurant setting

Walked in and wasn't noticed for a couple minutes. Sat down and they didn't take our order for a while. Overall the service was slow since there was only one lady working. However, the interior is gorgeous and the food isn't half bad. I think I would have a better experience ordering to-go.

Its good if you like what my wife calls "Bubble Gum Chinese food", its what you would expect in an Americanized Chinese food. Certainly looks dated. I like it for what it is, most of the time. They have some nice combination meals, either individual or family style. If you are looking for that true authentic Chinese food this isn't the place, but if you like that typical Americanized Chinese restaurant from the 80's, this is the place. I like it that way. After additional visits, I had to drop the star rating from 4 to 3. The food is really a mixed bag, you can have a great experience on one visit, then get something funky on the next. After my last visit on a Saturday evening when they were busier, there were two negatives, the service, and the quality of the food. First the service, they were very quick to take the order and bring out the food, but after that, it was a long time before they checked back in to see if we needed anything, and it took a long while to get the bill when we were done. Secondly the food, most of it was good, however the Almond Chicken was very disappointing. It tastes like a salt shaker exploded in the sauce. The almond chicken was pretty bad. The atmosphere is good, however it can be a bit noisy when they are busy. The walls on the booths are very thin, and I don't think people realize how well noise travels through them.

Pork egg foo yong, garlic chicken, and lemon chicken. Not recommended.

I'm from out of town and was driving around town looking for somewhere local to eat. I did not look this place up on Yelp beforehand as I was just super hungry. It looked inviting so I decided to try it out. The interior wasn't bad, very typical of a sit down Chinese place; it even had the stale, dingy feeling most other places I know have. And the older lady taking my order was very nice. I ordered the make it yourself combo, with lemon chicken, garlic chicken, pork egg foo yong, egg drop soup, and steamed rice. It sounded like a good amount of food at 11.99. But it wasn't... I had about 5 pieces of chicken for each portion, the rice was less than substantial, and the egg foo yong was smaller than my palm. It was slathered in sauce and the bread was bothersomely thick. The flavors were non existent minus the sugary sauces. I got my order to go, it felt awfully light, especially for a 3 item entree. And was honestly infuriated once I got back to work and opened up the case. I will never come back here. Nor would I recommend it to anyone.

Descent Chinese food with an old time atmosphere. Different than we East coasters are used too. But very good. The hot and sour soup is chicken? Based, spicy but not too hot, the menu is very confusing. The pictures appeared to be upside down some photos are attached. If I lived here I would be a regular

    It was good!!!

Nice family-owned place with lots of flavor in every dish. The sweet and sour pork and honey walnut prawns are my top picks.

Take out. The food is far too salty for my liking. But the service was fast and efficient. Portions are decent.

FOOD Stir-Fried Dried Green Beans ($19.95) The winner is this category would be Tropical Island Restaurant on Shelbourne; however, The Cozy Place offering would be close behind it. Decent with some crunch still; you can get it spicy or not. Ma Po Tofu ($19.95) You can order it meatless or minced pork; it's somewhat authentic. It does have some heat to it (for those sensitive to spice); however, it's pretty solid! === 3. SERVICE Service was good and professional on call-in, payment, wait, questions around the menu, and when the order was ready. English was fluently spoken by the lady working the front and the man cooking the dishes behind her. === 4. ENVIRONMENT It's a long, narrow restaurant - your group of 6, maybe 8 could fit at one table in the front. For everyone else, you're accommodated in tables of 2's or 4's along the wall. If bringing a wheelchair or baby stroller, I would stick to the table in the front. Parking is all metered on the street - note that the city has their parking enforcement office basically across the way working until 8pm, so put payment into the meters upfront even if you're coming by to do a quick pickup!

The bulgogi was flavorful, and balanced with vegetable in addition to meat. My husband ordered the dolsot bibimbap which was delicious as well. Only complaint is that the kimchi was a little underfermented (not sour enough for my liking). Also appreciated that the meal comes with barley tea, which is just what I needed on a rainy day. Disclaimer: The walls also show that if you give a 5-star review on Google, you get a free spring roll. I'm sorry, bribing your customers with free food does not seem right to me, so while I'd normally be more on the fence about whether my 4.5 star experience should be rounded up to 5, this bit of dishonesty makes me feel compelled to bring it down to 4.

Sometimes the heart just wants what it wants. If you are of a certain age (like me) you may recall…read morethat most Chinese restaurants in North America served what was called 'American Chinese' (or as I call it, 'Gringo Chinese') cuisine. This was essentially Cantonese style cooking modified to suit American tastes and ingredient availability. These establishments also had a distinctive look to them, offering a sort of 'Disneyfied' view of Chinese decor and culture. As the world has become smaller and we have become more culinarily sophisticated, these restaurants have largely fallen out of favor, but there are still a few gems to be found. One such gem exists in a truly unlikely spot: a quite backwater Canadian village called Cowichan Bay on Vancouver Island. WHO SHOULD GO: Anyone who just wants some great OG American-Chinese chow. Culinary historians who would like to take a tasty trip down 'memory lane'. WHO SHOULD NOT GO: Snobby, pretentious, self-identifying 'foodies'. THE ROSES: Located on the Cowichan Bay waterfront, the Kim Wah is very spacious and clean. All the 'usual suspects' are represented on the menu: Sweet-and-sour pork, Chow Mein, etc. Dishes are available 'family style', and in set combination meals for one or more diners. Prices are reasonable, and portions are generous. Service is efficient. THE THORNS: There are some odd omissions in the details. I wanted some hot mustard to dip in, and they didn't have any. TOP TIP FOR KIM WAH: Go ahead and seriously 'Lean In' on the retro American-Chinese vibe. You've already got most of the accoutrements of a classic OG Am-Chinese joint, so go all the way. Get the paper place mats with the Chinese Zodiac on them! You know you want to! And feel free to go crazy with the red and gold 'Chinese New Year' decor. What little decor you have seems a bit spare. THE VERDICT: Whether you dine in or are getting takeout to carry to your boat at the nearby marina, the Kim Wah Restaurant is a delightful and tasty throwback to a simpler time. Recommend!

She wanted to go to Kirin. Plenty of parking in the mall. Hostess greeted and seated us promptly. Restaurant was busy but not crazy. This was at 10am on a Thursday. Waiters were attentive. Usual table service was in place. Took our order and food came out at acceptable pace. When we were done, they politely boxed up the leftovers and we paid our bill. So service was on point. The food we ordered came out hot. The staples that I order to test was hargow, suimai and pai gwut(spareribs). All 3 dishes in general were good.....the hargow could have used an extra minute or 2 in the steamer. The suimai was very good. I tasted every ingredient in this dish. Usually it is just a complete mix and you can't discern the different flavors. They tried something different with the cheongfun by adding pieces of Chinese donut to the roll. I personally think it didn't add much to the dish, taste or texture wise. I did like the pea shoots with shrimp. I think it is a good combo. All in all a good dimsum. I also noticed they did not charge us a tea service. The cost of the food is comparable with other restaurants at this level. I have many Chinese friends in Vancouver, and my last visit to Kirin Richmond was in July 2024…read more This time, it was my birthday, and my friends insisted on treating me to Kirin Richmond once again. On a typical Sunday evening, the restaurant is usually fully occupied, but my friend had thoughtfully made a reservation a week in advance, so our table for five was ready upon arrival. As always, the restaurant was clean and well maintained, with good airflow thanks to the wide-open front entrance facing the parkade. The front desk receptionist greeted us cordially, and we were escorted to a cozy table in a comfortable location -- not too close to the washrooms, which I appreciated. Our meal began with the Kirin Special Assorted Cold Appetizer, followed by Crab Meat, Dried Scallops, and Fish Maw Soup. The soup arrived piping hot and was delicious, with a generous portion that could easily have served eight people. We also enjoyed Pea Tips Braised with Bean Curd and Assorted Mushrooms in Consommé, Marinated Free-Range Crispy Skin Chicken, Fillet of Cod Sautéed with Seasonal Vegetables, and Live Crab in Consommé with Ginger and Green Onion, served with E-fu Noodles. Overall, the quality and taste of every entrée were excellent. Service was top-notch -- tea and hot water were refilled constantly, bones and used plates were replaced promptly, and the servers were friendly and engaging throughout the evening. My friend and his family have apparently been regulars at this location for over two decades, which likely contributed to the exceptional attentiveness we received. However, one aspect of the experience genuinely disturbed me. All servers, including the captains, continued to wear masks at all times. While this practice was understandable two years ago, now -- five years after the onset of the pandemic, with COVID-19 managed similarly to other seasonal respiratory illnesses -- the continued universal masking in a fine-dining environment feels unnecessary and detracts from the overall guest experience. Fine dining, in my view as an avid foodie, is built on human connection, hospitality, and personal interaction. Masks create a more impersonal, almost clinical atmosphere. In a well-ventilated space like this, the environmental risk does not seem to justify the visual and social trade-off. Rather than providing reassurance, the persistent masking may unintentionally signal that the environment is unsafe or that management is out of step with current provincial health guidelines, where masking is now a personal choice rather than a mandate. Final verdict: Food & Service: 5/5 Ambience: 2/5 Overall: 3/5 -- as the current aesthetic feels more like a relic of 2020 than a leader in 2026 hospitality.
