The most joyous of rating upgrades. Four years departed nonetheless. Pictured is half a large Italian and half a small turkey. I see why my first rating was a 4 on the turkey, it's good but not blowing faces. To be fair, you gotta have awfully good fixins to take a turkey to a 5 count. You want to see it but it ain't easy not being cheesy. Kovacs got good fixins but it's deli style fixins, they're not going to the county fair tryna win medals. Kovacs does come correct on the bread which is such an obvious miss for many in the area. Nice soft airy hoagie roll like ya like it. The Italian though is the winner. The meat to sandwich ratio is elite, and the meats themselves were top top. I honestly didn't take time to pinpoint what about the meats were so good cause I straight inhaled this hoagie. While it looks like your average corner store from the outside, once you walk in, you are met with incredible energy from the owner and a special deli selection that is sure to meet anyone's standards. In any day, you can expect an assortment of breakfast sandwiches, all on a long roll (personally my favorite way to eat a breakfast sandwich,) and beyond that, he has a great meet and cheese deli selection. He doesn't skimp on portions, and it's really affordable. I've been enjoying a Buffalo chicken hoagie, with the works! You may be surprised to find out that he is slinging meatball subs too, which he claims to be the crowd pleasure. After trying it for the first time, I can certainly see why. OK the original Kovacs has not been seen in many many years. But the man who is in this place for at least the last 10 years is really personable, happy, and treats his customers well. He's old schooled in the fine art of conversation. How he is able to carry-on the best conversations while making your hoagies and ringing you up I'll never be able to figure out. The owner of Kovaks is Media, Pennsylvania's best multitasker! His store is filled with all the items you need for your home, for lunch or a snack. His Hoagies are fabulous because he knows how to make a traditional Philadelphia hoagie the right way even though there is no doubt he was born elsewhere. I just think he has a gift of being able to figure things out and do it well. I love the selections he has for beverages. They run the range from all the normal ones you expect but then he has unusual beverages as well. His chips and snacks selections leave nothing to be desired. This is a store that has some of the best deli sandwiches I ever had in my life and I found this out cause Media/Elwyn is one of the lines of trains I work as a conductor for Septa. While I was on break in the media station right across the street from this store I had 45mins until my next train came and was hungry so I always told myself I'd try them out. Long story short, I did and I was more than pleased that I did cause the sandwich not only smelled so good it even tasted better! Tried a turkey and cheese on potato bread with onion, tomato, pickles, extra mayonnaise, and pepper. The guy who runs the shop made it and he's obviously made it with passion cause it was one of the best. It's like a corner store in the city cause you have a big selection of chips, snacks, soft drinks, and lottery. The lunch meats are by Dietz and Watson, no wonder the sandwich was good. Always been in and out of Delco and ever since I was a child it was always known they made and served some of the best food outside of the city. Paul is one of the nicest and friendliest man youll meet and his sandwiches are the best you'll ever find. Yes (as one reviewer stated) sometimes due to the expected rush on daily specials, he will make some hoagies or breakfast sandwiches shortly ahead of time but trust me, they aren't there long enough on the counter to make a bit of difference. AMAZING! I think we found our new top hoagie! We actually tried them yesterday for lunch and they missed a topping. Normally I would take stars off for that, but their hoagie was so good, not only did I not care about the error, I convinced hubs to go back for MORE last night for dinner. That time the hoagies were even better. Everything was completely accurate and ready on time. Look at the photos, super well-made, everything layered properly, and a real knack for what goes where. No shredded lettuce strings, just the real leaf! No veggies on top as filler, falling out all over you. Meat on top, where it should be! And meat on bottom too, also where it should be. Proper layers. They know what they're doing. While Philly people know what they want or don't want in a sandwich, you still have to look for people who know how to actually make them. This family has been doing it for 21 years! I talked to the family to express my appreciation for their skills, and learned that the kids are first-generation American, and the parents came from India. Wow! The parents are not even native to Philly but they have managed to master the cuisine in a delicious way! Awesome! We are really impressed. They said a couple decades ago, they didn't always make such a good sandwich, it was trial and error at first. They got enough feedback when they didn't do a good job, so they were proactive to succeed. They asked their customers, and learned how to do it right. How awesome is that? How many hoagie shops are willing to take input? It is probably because they were in a new place that they were so open to suggestions, and the result of taking those suggestions is learning how to make a dang fine sandwich! For over a year, we have been in the market for a new favorite hoagie spot, after the demise of our old one. We are picky hoagie eaters. We won't touch Primo's, or any other chain hoagie, especially the "S" word (starts with a sub- and ends with a -way). It's gotta be a singular family-run business, with high-quality meats, rolls from a S. Philly bakery, and very fresh veggies. Kovac's hits the mark. We are loving this place, and are so glad we found them. Sad we passed by for so many years before trying them, but so grateful we finally did. Try $11 for the same size at Cut Above, or $12 for that size at Ro-Lynn (nearby places considered "great" hoagies shops). I walked in and I walked out on a Saturday afternoon. They had a special on Italian hoagies and there was just a pile of them sitting on the back counter, non-refrigerated, pre-made.
