After my husband noticed that I had been staring and almost drooling over my iPad Pro several evenings ago, I fessed up about reading stellar reviews about Koromo from fellow Yelp friends (Lyn L, Ramfis B, Jessica P, Rod U). We had never heard of Koromo before and all I needed to mention was "chicken katsu" to him, and he was all in giving this place a try.
We chose to have lunch here yesterday around noon and anticipated seeing a long line to get in. However, much to our surprise, most of the crowd was already inside the restaurant, so we signed ourselves in. The hostess told us that there was only one other party ahead of us and the wait would be about 15 minutes, so we waited nearby to ensure we'd hear her call. Sure enough, we were called after 8 minutes after signing in but I'm not guaranteeing that you will have the same good fortune.
Our server was attentive and friendly as she inquired if this was our first time dining here, and she even gave us menu suggestions as to which were HER faves. However, my husband quickly asked her about the availability of their chicken katsu as we were concerned that they might not have had it. She confirmed that the chicken katsu was available and told my husband "good choice". We quickly placed our food orders and hungrily waited.
Looking around the restaurant, I noted that the set up is similar to another tonkatsu-focused restaurant, Tonkatsu Tamafuji. Each table had 2 crocks of tonkatsu sauce (mild or spicy) and a ceramic urn-like utensil holder. Our server brought us a tray of hot oshibori (hot wet hand towels) to ready ourselves for the feast to come and also asked if we preferred ponzu sauce (instead of the tonkatsu sauce) to accompany our fried lunch sets. We chose the tonkatsu sauce, and she then brought us a pair of suribachi (mortar & pestle) sets with sesame seeds to pulverize.
FOOD: Both of our entrées were served with a bowl of steaming hot miso soup, tsukemono and kimchi, fresh shredded cabbage and rice (choice of brown or white).
-Ebi Fry & Chicken Katsu Teishoku: 2 pieces of Black Tiger Shrimp and 2 pieces of fresh fried boneless chicken thighs were breaded with Koromo's house made panko flakes. Both items were fried crisp and golden brown. The shrimp were fried perfectly as its panko crust was light, crisp, non-greasy and adhered onto the shrimp without sliding off when bit into. The chicken thighs were juicy, tender and flavorful with the same irresistible breading. $20.50
-Chicken Katsu Teishoku: My husband chose the 4-piece teishoku since he said he was hangry. The 4 beautifully breaded and fried boneless chicken thighs were sitting atop a stainless steel half moon net which kept the fried chicken pieces from touching the plate. The hot from the fryer chicken wasn't greasy and you could tell by the crunch and airiness of the panko that the cooking oil was clean and at the right temperature. The juiciness of the chicken though fully cooked ran out with each bite. In fact, when my husband took his first bite, he got squirted by the hot chicken juices. By the time he on his third piece of chicken, he was starting to lean back in his chair to declare his satiety, but he got his "second wind" and downed that last piece of chicken with another half bowl of rice. $19.00
We were sure lucky to have such a short wait (8 minutes) after signing in with the hostess and the food came out of the kitchen hot and fresh. Our server refilled our shredded cabbage upon request and hot tea was served. Although service was quick and efficient and restaurant was always crowded, we never felt rushed to eat. We stayed in the restaurant for 1.5 hours as well as some other diners (who probably stayed longer because they were already seated when we arrived).
