Awesome spot! Been coming here for the past several years when I visit Tampa and it's for sure one of my favorite BBQ restaurants in my travels around the country! In part because Konan's isn't too far from the Tampa airport (around a 10 minute drive), I've often made it my first stop when coming to town. Konan's is a black-owned BBQ restaurant located in a residential neighborhood that's not too far from Raymond James Stadium where the Tampa Bay Buccaneers play. Speaking of football, the family that owns and runs the restaurant has produced a few D-I basketball and football players, including a current player who's projected to be a high-round NFL draft pick in the next draft. The last time I was here was a Friday, a little before noon. It hadn't gotten too busy yet so wasn't much of a wait in line. Ordered my favorite meal there, which is the 2-meat (ribs and pulled pork) combo ($17). The combo comes with two sides - I usually get the flavored rice (Rice 'a la Trigg) and the mac and cheese. The meal also includes a slice of bread. Lemonade is $3 extra, bottled water $2. As always, the ribs and pulled pork were excellent. I especially love the yellow sauce (I think a mustard sauce) they use to flavor their meats and rice side dish, which is a unique staple of this restaurant. The mac and cheese is always very tasty as well. Their food is also always well-portioned - I always leave very full! Altogether my meal came out to around $21, which was a very fair price for two meats, two sides, and a lemonade. Konan's does give a small discount if you pay with cash rather than credit. It seems most customers come here for take-out, though there's plenty of seating both inside and outside the restaurant. The staff is always very friendly, though I'm not too big on the fact that they're big Tampa Bay Buccaneer fans (LOL). If you've never been would definitely check it out! Causal dining place, located in a residential area. We saw a lot of people ordering take out but there are plenty of tables both indoor and outdoor you can use to dine in. Their specialty is pork and chicken, no beef on the menu. The ribs could be a little softer, was hoping the meat would fall off the bone but it didn't, still delicious. Service was good, they were nice enough to explain the menu patiently, the difference between the pig plate and the hog plate is just 2 kinds of meat vs 3 kinds, and you get to choose which kind you want. Plate combo is good for one person and the full slab of ribs is certainly enough for 3 people, the 2 sides that come with it were large. Look I reaaaally wanted to like this place. I do not understand the hype at all. It was the toughest meat of ribs I've ever had. Every single bite either had hard or soft bone. Ordered two of the big pig online and there was no option to choose which meats. I assumed it just came with a variety of their choice, which was fine we like trying different types of meat. Pretty much spent $50 bucks for two double orders of ribs.. so couldn't even enjoy something else since the ribs were inedible. I've lived in tampa for 25 years and this was my first time here! New favorite place! Went on a Sunday around 5pm, walked right up to the counter and ordered and they had it out within a minute. We came to Tampa from Jacksonville I wanted some bbq found this hidden gem. It was Super Bowl Sunday and they had closed, someone rented it out for a Super Bowl party. The owner son was on the grill cooking for the renters. The hospitality went through the clouds they shared a lot of their food with us. Yes it is delicious I give it a 10 out of 10. I've found the best BBQ in tampa!! My boss was telling me about the best BBQ and i thought he was exaggerating but he tells no lies! My fiance and I went to Konans and immediately hit with the breathtaking bbq smell. We ordered the rib dinner and the chopped chicken and rib dinner with mac and cheese and baked beans. Also ordered 7up pound cake but i ate it before i could get a picture! The ribs were fall off the bone tender and the flavor itself was indescribable. Im not a sauce fan but whatever this sauce is i need it in a bottle ASAP. Mac and cheese and baked beans always are a hit with BBQ and theirs was the perfect addition. We paid about $50 for both plates with tip and honestly this plate is worth double that! The service was incredible, we could tell it was family owned by how much pride everyone took in the food. This place is a neighborhood hot spot, fits the hole-in-the-wall narrative but isn't dirty in the least. Plenty of seating space in two separate dining areas, and plenty of outside parking. It has a slightly loud but doable BGM with friendly and fast staff. Now the important part is the food, I ordered the 3-meat pig combo with 2 sides, and I got the trigg rice and the mac and cheese. Both are the down-to-earth soul food you crave with good bbq and let me tell you it's very good bbq. Mine came smothered with a sweet and tangy yet slightly spicy mustard sauce. Now I'm not a huge fan of mustard but this was done right and complemented the meat really well. Drinks are either canned Coke products or homemade lemonade. They do offer premade single-serving desserts but I wasn't in the mood for sweets so I can't talk about those but they looked good. The food at Konan BBQ was with out a doubt the best BBQ I've had in the city. The service given made you feel welcomed and at home. What I had was the chicken with baked beans and Macaroni and cheese. Again, I said it felt like home, and that it was. The Beans were a close match with my grandmother's. Under all of that meat was a warm piece of bread to sop up all of that goodness. Lastly, normally I wouldn't eat just anyone's potato salad but this one did not disappoint. Chicken and ribs were well seasoned and tasty ... the customer who ordered before and after me had to wait for meat to be done on the grill. The staff did not explain the wait to the customers but i overheard the response provided to a customer after she inquired about why the food was taking so long. The mac and cheese was one of the best I have had at any restaurant in a long time. Baked beads were perfectly sweet. The potatoe salad was overpowered by the mayonnaise but was good otherwise. Konan's has a private lot, but during peak hours, you might need to find street parking along the surrounding roads. Konan's is still serving takeout during COVID. You must order in-person at the restaurant; they are not taking call ahead orders. They limited the amount of people waiting in the restaurant. There are tape markings where you can stand, and they will pace the orders if there are customers still waiting for their food. All the workers wear masks, and it was a smooth experience when I went. I ordered two Big Pig dinners: one plate includes your choice of two meats and and two small sides. I ordered a little bit of everything so my husband and I could share. For the first dinner, I ordered chicken and sausage, with collard greens and mac n cheese for the sides. In our other plate, I ordered sausage and chopped pork, with sides of potato salad and baked beans. You need to come in somewhat early, as they were out of the thin ends that I had wanted to order. The meats are slathered in Konan sauce, which is a little tangy-little sweet. The meats are juicy and not dried out. The hubby is somewhat picky about his BBQ, and he enjoyed his dinner. The potato salad and mac n cheese were my favorite sides, although they were all very tasty. You won't be disappointed pointed in whatever you choose to order. Some of the best bbq I've ever had! I showed up a bit early, and they were kind enough to let us in before opening. I got the big pig dinner with chopped pork and sausage, and it was AMAZING!! I love their sauce and they also give you a ton of food. The meats were delicious and nice and juicy. I also loved the mac and potato salad, next time I'll definitely have to try all the other sides they have. The only nitpicks I have are I was a bit sad that they didn't have the desserts I saw online for sale that day, I really wanted to try the red velvet cake after seeing all the pictures. I also wish they put the bread on top of the meats or in a separate container (it's buried underneath the meats in my picture), since it's so saucy it gets kinda mushy fast.
