Up until I found Kokumi earlier this year, there was only one other shabu shabu place that I frequented to get my fix (yes, fix... I'm addicted to shabu shabu!). As you can likely take away from my photos, I really enjoy Kokumi, so this is one of the two places that are my favorites for this amazing meal. What stands out about Kokumi over other restaurants that serve shabu shabu are the great selection of broths and proteins, the presentation, and the attention to COVID-safe protocols... so I guess almost everything? Let's start with the selection of broths and proteins. Regardless of what I've tried here, everything has been delicious and fresh! I particularly love the fish selections; their fish is actually sashimi-grade, not some frozen fish, as I have gotten at other places. It might help that Kokumi also serves sushi, but either way, the salmon and the yellowtail are my favorite proteins! Now the presentation: everything is so nicely organized and garnished! Even though my pictures may not do the plates justice, they have a visual appeal! Lol. And finally, COVID safety: this restaurant still does outdoor seating only. Every time I go, they add nice new touches to their seating area. Now, it's lovely with the red lamps and heaters. Staff is well-masked, both outside and in the kitchen (I've seen them when I've walked inside to the bathroom). Also, the food is served all covered with saran wrap! I also have to mention the service, of course. I've always had attentive and courteous servers, and while it does get busy, they do try their best! I've visited this place back when it was Mokkoji (way, way back) and the quality is still solid to this day. The OG Broth may be plain for some but I like it as a healthy option for when I'm not feeling up for a heavier broth and it still gets tasty after boiling up the meats and veggies in it. The regular set is perfect if you don't have a huge appetite and includes veggies, rice, noodles (instant and udon) along with ponzu soy sauce and sesame sauce for dipping. I really like the Kokumi, which is wagyu toro with onions, bonito flakes and an egg on top. It's melt in your mouth good for the price point. Currently they still have outside seating within the tents. My arm did get tired from having to cook and eat out of the pot since the set-up is with portable stoves and for whatever reason I think the stove is kind of high, chair is low or table is high (unless I have short arms which I never thought either). I've been here a couple times and food is always amazing quality and fresh. It's located in a plaza and there is plenty of parking. It's March 2021 and they are doing outside patio dining. It's super spacious and pretty safe as well. All workers are wearing protective gears and gloves. Food are covered in Saran Wrap before giving it to us. My family ordered: waygu set $99.99, lean cut 20.99$, lamb 12 pieces 24.99$, Alaskan sushi roll 12$ and wings $7. Waygu set :meats were amazing but down side was they were stingy with the seafood it was one piece of each but meant for 2 people? The waygu nigiri was tender but was alright. The lean cut and the lamb was pretty good and decent for the price as well. So no complaints. The Alaskan sushi roll wasn't that great flavor was lacking. The wings was not bad it was still crunchy but it came pretty cold. Overall their hotpot is the only thing I will come not really feeling their appetizers super small as well. The only complaint Is the service. We were first greeted by a girl who took our temps and she also took our order during the whole time she gave us attitude and try to rush us and we didn't feel welcome. When our food came, we asked for green onion and garlic 3 times and they still didn't give it to us. They forgot our ice creams for the waygu set and we have to let them know. I would also suggest the sukiyaki broth since they also give you a raw egg with it to dip your meat in which is done in traditional Japanese sukiyaki. Kokumi has been pretty inconsistent with their meat these days.. It seems like they are short staffed as there's only one person working. It takes an extremely long time to get seated, order, and for the food to be ready. Despite being short staffed and inconsistent these days, I still crave their firecrab soup. It's the perfect balance of spicy, savory, and sweet - a unique flavor that you can't find anywhere else. Another downside is that you don't get much veggies, and you have to pay for extra. Came here with my boyfriend on a really chilly day. The restaurant is an outside experience-- which I lowkey have mixed feelings about! I love hotpot on cold days, so I do wish it was inside. In terms of food now, I ordered the Wagyu Toro with fire crab soup while my boyfriend ordered the marbled prime? with tonkotsu soup. The meat quality for both was absolutely amazing and superb. The soup was good for tonkotsu, but I wasnt a particular fan of the fire crab-- that's just a personal preference though. Both soups were nice and rich, while the fire crab had a hint of sweetness. The vegetables came with glass noodles and ramen, a bit different from Mokkoji (as I'm seeing a lot of reviews comparing this place to Mokkoji?). Soups do also taste a bit lighter than Mokkoji imo. Still, I believe these places are different and hence I hope to stray away from trying to absolutely compare this place to other hot pot places. They also have fire drops! They also have half a block of ramen and rice on the side. Sesame and ponzu sauce is included in the set! Well, let me tell you we are so glad that we gave it another try. Since then we have gone back another 3 times and we enjoy the food so much. However, I do have to tell you that service is quite slow because they seem to be busy but there isn't enough staff. I highly recommend the beef belly meat. Its a bit pricer but its so soft and you can totally taste the difference in the quality of meat. To get more bang for your buck do the pick 2 meat option. It's a little bit on the pricer side overall, but I can't even trip because the food is so good and it hits the spot! It's one of my kids favorite spot now. What a wonderful way to end my birthday! My husband and I were looking for sushi places that have outdoor dining. I loved the look and variety of their sushi light set ($25) pictured on yelp which has wagyu beef, salmon, ahi tuna, yellowtail, scallop, sweet shrimp, spicy tuna, and then came with a lobster roll piece and crab roll piece. Went here for this, even though they are mostly known for very good shabu. Upon receiving my sushi, it was beautifully displayed. My favorite pieces that I felt were special was the scallop (so soft), yellowtail (so tasty) , blue crab roll (alot if crab) and wagyu (unique). I thought the lobster roll tasted strange. I also spoiled myself with the soft shell crab ($10), which consisted of a whole crispy little crab. Loved it. After, I had a mango ice cream macaroon sandwich, which was very sweet and delicious. It was bigger than I expected. When the waiter and waitress heard it was my birthday, they were so sweet about it and even played a Japanese happy birthday song over the speaker for me. It was awesome. As for the ambience, we came at night, so the outdoor tent had red Japanese lanterns decorated across the ceiling. Their was pretty upbeat music, so it had a positive vibe. I took my mom here for her birthday and we had a wonderful experience. They are open for outdoors seating only (tent in parking lot style) as of November 2021. We did have to wait about 15-20 minutes on a Sunday evening for dinner, which we didn't think was bad at all. Basically, everyone gets their own Shabu soup (can choose from original, miso, sukiyaki, mala, tomato, tomyum, beef, kimch, tonkotsu or fire crab flavors ) and a vegetable set (comes with mushrooms, udon and glass noodles, lettuce, tofu, sweet potato). For those who want more than 1 soup flavor, you can get a duo soup option (has a center divider) for $5 more. The meat options are what's the main driving difference in terms of the choices. We got the wagyu for 2, which comes with 2 different types of beef (rosu & zabuton). I honestly couldn't taste the difference after cooking it in the soup. This set also comes with wagyu sushi, which was just so-so. Mom and I both felt the beef was undercooked. Oh and they give you 2 macaron ice cream of choice at the end. We got the vanilla and green tea flavors. The vanilla one was way too sweet. The green tea ice cream was not too sweet and had a good balance between the macaron and green tea flavor. My brother ordered the Pick 2 menu item. He said, "it's good, but the amount was so little." He ended up ordering another item (Kokumi - Wagyu toro glazed with egg and bonito shaving. service is definitely hit or miss depending on the day you come. there is plenty of options on the menu for everyone. my boyfriend and i shared the sukiyaki and got two plates of wagyu toro (pick two). we also shared the my size roll.. food wasn't anything spectacular. the sukiyaki wasn't as sweet as i prefered-- almost tasted watered down. the wagyu toro was the right amount of fatty, but if youre not a heavy eater you can get by with just one plate. To accommodate the Covid restrictions, they installed a tent in the parking lot which can fit around 30 people. Because it's a shabu place, you also get your individual mini stove. I do recommend coming here before 6-630pm, especially if you come during the weekend, because it started getting super busy after we sat down. Now the food: I'd give it a solid 4/5. The tonkotsu broth is very mushroom forward, so if you're not a fan of mushrooms I would recommend to try a different soup. I enjoyed the Kokumi beef (with added egg yolk and green onions). I really enjoyed the beef, the egg glaze made the beef even more tender than it usually is (though it does make the soup cloudy). They have a great selection of soup bases and you can add hot drops or chili oil to any of them. I haven't been here since it was still Mokkoji, but nothing has really changed. I decided to come here for dinner since they have outdoor dining due to COVID-19. The tables are spaced out, employees wearing masks, temperature check before dining, and all the safety precautions. All the food is covered in cling wrap when brought to the table as well. The only thing is that you don't grind up your sesame sauce anymore, but that's okay. I'm glad they pour you plenty so you don't need to ask for more. Even so, the waiters came around very often to check on us to make sure we were happy. I ordered the Pick 2 option ($21.99 with an additional $5 for large) with Wagyu Toro and Steak Cut. Definitely pick this combo since it's the best deal on the menu. I also upgraded my broth to Sukiyaki (+$2). My friends and I went to this spot on a Monday night at around 9PM. We wrote our names down and were seated right away. You get to choose what type of meat you want as well as the type of soup base. I opted for toro+miso combo. The soup came out and it comes with rice, veggies, and the meat. We also ordered an appetizer of sushi cut rolls and the fish was fresh as well. The soup comes with condiments like soy sauce, garlic, chili oil, etc.. so that you can get the soup base to your liking. The kokumi seating area is huge since it takes up most of the parking lot, so you can't miss it. The service is great and they play really good music so you can jam out while eating. Steak cut with fire crab soup base. This had half a crab and the broth was a little spicy. There were a few owners that split up and went their separate ways and each location is owned by a different owner now but from my understanding all locations still have very much the same menu. From my previous experience till now... If anything it seems like they had a slight upgrade. You pretty much can't leave this place not feeling so full out of your mind that you need to go to sleep right away. I've ordered just about everything once on the menu. If you don't end up getting the combos or set menus, I highly recommend getting one of their hand rolls. They are all delicious. Definitely get the Toro or wagyu Meats as they are higher quality and super delicious. When you get the tier set menus they have a new thing now where they offer a sampler platter of seafood items to also cook in your meal. I really like it though as the menu hasn't really changed the the Shabu is still great. For Shabu, its one of the few places that serves fish, which is a welcome addition to the mostly red meat places that I've seen. It's also not AYCE so you get what you pay for and the quality is excellent. The AC, which is critical at any Shabu establishment in LA was well cooled. Just make sure to upgrade your broth for a small surcharge or you'll probably be a bit disappointed by your experience haha. I've tried the fire crab, miso, and sukiyaki and all of them are great broth choices! Like other reviewers have said, it's the best deal to get the 2-meat combo for $21.99. I get the beef toro and the flat cut steak (I can't remember what it's called) and I enjoy being able to change up the meats! The sesame sauce is a highlight of the experience for me. I'm obsessed with any sort of nutty creamy sauce and the one here totally delivers. It's fun to crush the sesame as well when they do provide that! Not sure if Kokumi lives up to its Mokkoji days. I came on a Friday evening late August with a party of 5. Service is great as always, but the Fire Crab recipe is different than a couple years ago when I was coming back once a month. It tastes sweeter and spicier now. The staff graciously swapped my soup out, which is very nice of them. Unfortunately there were still quality control issues. My friend had a giant fly in his soup and mine had a piece of rubber plastic. Otherwise, service is still stellar and the unlimited veggies are great. The meats are fresh and beautifully plated. I'm a huge fan of the chicken balls and I love the freshly grated sesame sauce. Hopefully they fix the broth issues, I'd love to come back soon. read more
