I was very impressed by the tacos at Kokopelli. Even though I only had one taco, that one taco was really good. Living in LA for most of my life, I have had an opportunity to try so many varieties of tacos, but honestly, when I bit into the Kraken, which is an octopus fusion taco, I literally felt pleasantly euphoric. The taco was really that good. It was even better with all the varieties of salsa that they give you. I took a picture of the salsas although I'd avoid Lucifer's tears as it will make you tear up literally. Perhaps they could have AC at this place, but in lieu of AC, I was drinking one of their craft beers called "Nocturna" to stay cooler. I loved the vibe of this place in general as it was very hipster. The employees here were so nice. They even spoke English even though I could have spoken to them in Spanish. I would highly recommend coming to this place if you are in Tijuana.

Amazing food and amazing service. We stopped here with a crew of people and the staff handled our crowd with friendly finesse. They have an open view of the kitchen and you could see chile's roasting on an open flame. A cold selection of local Mexican craft beers in the fridge. I was able to have a local craft brew n a bottle and that was tasty! I tried a Horchatta flavored craft beer. The bathroom was cozy clean. The sink was located outside the bathroom and was a bit of a tight squeeze but had a neat view to look out the window. The food was also good. I had an octopus taco. It was cooked just right, not chewy like octopus can sometimes be. And the flavor was amazing. The pricing was fair for the beer and taco's. I would make a trip to come back here again.

I'm gonna need a thesaurus to find additional words to describe how f'cking amazing this place is. You sons of b!tches want artisan, well here you go. The menu leans towards seafood/veggie tacos & tostadas. As handcrafted as they wanna be with tortillas made in-house & that flight of salsas they bring out! *dies & goes to heaven* Beginning with pickled onions, to tangy & spicy salsa to death metal heat! Octopuse, salmon, shrimp, ceviche, portobello mushroom, pesto, chimichurri, mango & pomegranate seeds all make it on the menu & the chef somehow makes it work so beautifully. Your entire meal including a couple of craft beers won't even make a dent on your wallet. A definite must if ever in TJ. A definite must!! Your Homegirl, Violy

Unforgettable "designer" seafood tacos south of the border. Named after the deity of the Hopi Indians, this restaurant serves upmarket gourmet tacos with pretty fancy names. I ordered the "Kraken", "Gringos en Vacaciones" and "Pibil". The "Kraken" is an octopus taco with a special marinade, "Pibil" is smoked marlin and "Gringos en Vacaciones" is marinated shrimp with a chilli pepper on the inside. The tacos were stuffed with clearly premium ingredients in interesting marinades and non-standard combinations. Some came pretty nicely decorated as well. After those three, I wished I had more stomach space to cram in a few more tacos before I had to get back across the border. It took me a while to find this place as there weren't many road signs and the information on the internet wasn't particularly precise. It is a couple of blocks from the Plaza Rio shopping mall and Cuauhtémoc statue, close to the intersection of Cuauhtémoc Sur Poniente and Rio Suachiate. Search for 2133 Cuauhtémoc Sur Poniente Tijuana BC Mexico in Google Maps. This is a sit-down restaurant with valet service, pricey by mexican standards (but okay after the exchange rate). They clearly cater mostly to the locals, and nobody expected "turistas" like myself to walk on in, mumble bad Spanish and gesture at the menu. I look forward to my next trip south of the border. You can find them on facebook here: https://www.facebook.com/tkokopellirio

We ordered the Gringo En Vacaciones, the Rasta and the Kraken tacos. The first two were our favorites. We also ordered the Maui Waui and Aluxe both also very delicious! The service was fast and they even break down both US dollars and pesos on the recipient which is very helpful. We walked in with about 25-30ppl, the service was prompted and very friendly. Thank you we all left extremely happy.

Kokopelli had an amazing variation of flavors that danced in your mouth. I started with an Insurgente cerveza Tiniebla and a Chicano taco (I am a Chicana), with pulpo abd nopales. My foodie niece had a michelada with a taco de caracol that was very savory. We shared a plate of costillitas raspadas trying the different salsas. I loved the pineapple and the one w cacahuate. I tried the Gringo en vacaciones taco filled w camarones, queso, y chile California. Also I tried the Rasta taco with camarones, pesto, y hongos. The aguachile Maui waui was very refreshing as well. Great place with very unique flavors.

What can I say that hasn't been already been said? These Artisan tacos are amazing! We made it our days' mission to find this place, and thanks to a fellow Yelper here, found it easily. Cab ride from the border to the Rio Plaza mall was $6 USD. After window shopping there, it was a quick 10 minute walk to Kokopelli. Be forewarned, the hot sauces they bring out to your table were mostly hot! At least to us they were.

    Pulpo (octopus) tacos.

I ordered the pulpo (octopus) tacos for which Kokopelli is known. They were pretty good: not knock my socks off though. The octopus was grilled with a slight char and somewhat tender. I don't think that I would return though.

Tijuana has earned its reputation as the silicon valley of tacos, where the adventuresome nature of local chefs combines in endless creativity with the bounty of local seafood, produce and meat. Kokopelli started on the cutting edge as a food truck and now has this permanent location but listen, the integrity of Kokopelli survived the growth. This place is weird, in an awesome way. From the Pagan fertility god to the cocktail that tasted like al pastor, chapulines with salsa negra, squid ink tostada, to the music and culture going on inside here. Cutting edge delicious street food with weird warm vibes.

Wanna have tacos with a unique spin?? Then this is your place! Their menu is pretty special. We had the opportunity to order the gringo on vacation and the kraken. The tacos come with a nice selection of 6 different sauces. The gringo on vacation comes with a green chile (think of chile relleno) avocado and shrimp. The green chile was not spicy, but it gave it a great kick. Definitely nothing you have tried before. The kraken came with fresh grilled octopus. Although, I preferred the gringo the kraken was not a bad option if you like octopus. As a plus side this small taco join offers a great selection of craft beers. The service is pretty good and the atmosphere is laid back and relaxed. I would definitely recommend this place if you want to try something different.

The adobada taco was super flavorful, juicy and addicting. It came with a complementary cilantro-looking sauce that made the taco even better. The Suadero was soft and flavorful as well with a spicy kick. The Asada was flavorful and came with lots of guacamole/avocado. They also give you a small plate full of limes and slices of radishes to enjoy with your food/tacos. It is a very spacious restaurant with a VIP side (maybe for locals or etc) and a regular side. Las Ahumaderas is a collection of 5-6 taquerias on one side street off Blvd. Agua Caliente, one of the main thoroughfares in TJ. The taquerias offer very solid, relatively cheap tacos and tend to stay open until super late at night (often until 4 am). Las Ahumaderas is famously nicknamed "Taco Alley" and gained some international recognition after being featured one of Anthony Bourdain's travel and food shows. I've been several times but last stopped by Las Ahumaderas in September. The most popular spot there (and my personal favorite) is Las Tres Salsas - would highly recommend checking out that taqueria first if you've never been. The most highly regarded tacos here are the adobada (pork) tacos (my personal favorite as well). Ordered two adobada tacos, one suadero (cow belly) taco, and a Sprite. The nice thing about the food and drink at Ahumaderas is that a lot of the basic items are priced the same - each taco and the sprite were 45 pesos (around $2.50 USD) each. The tacos were all well-portioned, tasty, and filling (as usual). One thing a lot of tourists don't know is Las Tres Salsas has two levels, with the second level sometimes having a decent, relaxing view and atmosphere depending on the time of day. So I ordered and ate on the second floor (ordered from the server for that floor). Cash (dollars or pesos) are by far the most common method of payment but credit cards are also accepted at Las Tres Salsas and I think the other taquerias at Ahumaderas as well. If you don't speak Spanish there's usually someone at the register who speaks enough English to get by though the server I had that afternoon happened to speak very good English. Right after Las Tres Salsas I went to Tacos El Paisano, one of the other taquerias in the establishment. Ordered 1 asada (steak) taco, 1 cabeza (cow's head) taco, and a Fresca soda. Like Las Tres Salsas, all of the items were 45 pesos each. The tacos here were also good, though not as good as Las Tres Salsas; both of the tacos fell apart a bit due to being slightly soggy (though again they were good). I'm a picky eater but there are a wide variety of tacos, quesadillas, and other items to try between the handful of taquerias at Ahumaderas. Las Ahumaderas is about a 13-15 minute walk down Agua Caliente from Telefonica Gastro Park, another excellent foodie location in TJ. Must visit if you've never been before!

The Zona Rio location has a small dining area, that is very popular with both the locals and visitors. It is easy to see why. Their menu does not over dose on the standard morning and afternoon items that you would find anyplace. However, this is the first restaurant I've been to in Tijuana, that does not have an English menu.... so I had to labor through the Spanish menu. But, they do have unique dishes, thus making the visit adventurous, because it is difficult to choose. I went back and forth, and finally settled for their 3-egg omelet with asparagus and sheep cheese. It came with refried beans, strings of carrots and beets, small fired up tostadas and fresh tortillas (both blue and yellow corn). A small side of soggy chilaquiles was also served. A small flavorful salsa tray is also provided with 3 options, ranging from mild to hot. The asparagus spears were thin, cut up into small pieces and sautéed with mild spices. The outer egg covering soft and not overdone. If anything, there was too much sheep cheese, in certain portions of the omelet. I say this because it was an asparagus omelet, and it, instead of the cheese, should have been the star. Still, it did not take away from the other commendable aspects of the complete entree and its accompaniments. Before the meal, a small refreshing fruit plate is served.
