Smoked ahi dip! 7 dollars and some change
Jen C.

If you are craving a smoked ahi dip and do not want to go through the laborious job of smoking a fish and then preparing a dip from its remains, OR if you do not have the inside scoops of your local fisherman slinging smoked fish dips then KoKohead Foods' smoked ahi dip will do. You can find these at your local foodland stores. No trip to the ocean and smokehouse necessary. If you don't know how smoked dips taste then it is truly a shame. If you know, you know. If you really know then you know it's a taste worth knowing.

Ohhh that smoked ahi dip. Outta this world!

Stopped by the local grocery store today to get some "healthy" staples...bananas, vegetable, tofu...and what a nice surprise to bump into a friend I hadn't seen in at least a few months. Thank you Claire for showing me this delicious spread that as you say, "every time you see it you get at least one container!" So of course, I ran over to the seafood section and found, exactly where you said it would be, KHF Smoked Ahi Spread. ...Wanted to make sure in the few moments it took for us to talk talk talk...there wouldn't be a run on this interesting looking delicacy. Took it home and quickly rearranged my plans for home cooked meal. The star was the Smoked Ahi Spread...and what in my home would compliment it? Ohh yes, Tostitos (hah, try not to keep toooo much "stuff" only the essentials). To balance it out, lightly stirfried some fresh spinach and garlic. This spread brought back memories of many years ago when Hoku's @ the then Kahala Hilton Hotel used to serve their smoked ahi spread predinner. Thank you Times for carrying this deliciousness in your chiller in the front of the store. Thank you Claire for sharing this info...ohhh, ok confession time. I actually peaked in your wagon. I will forever be a changed foodie. :) Yummmm !!

We've been a fan of this Ahi Spread for ... over 5 years, maybe 10 years. This is great on crackers with wine or soda. $6.99 for 8 oz. You can get this at Fujioka Wine Store at Market City, Tamura's Wine Store at Waialae, R. Field in FoodLand Beretania. Warning: Probably high calorie. YELP 365 - 184/365

Some of the best spreads I've had. On Maui I can only find it at Foodland Farms Lahaina. We ate three tubs of this stuff on celery stock (got to cut calories somewhere) in a weeks time and loved it. Usually $7.99 a tub. Buy one.

This used to be the best smoked ahi. The last two times it was mushy and lacked flavor. It has changed for the worse.

Charcuterie is a must, but their smoked Salmon box might be my favorite. Charcuterie is full of top grade imported cured meats and cheeses. If anything, you have to get their goat cheese truffles. Me and my family fight over these whenever we get them. In shop, they also have a wide variety of wines. I would always recommend calling to see what they have in stock. The servers and owners are very informative and can explain all points of purposes of food, pairings, and how to enjoy each component. Very welcoming into their establishment and make you feel at home. I have yet to take a one of the classes because most of the time I can't get a group together, but also because they are always sold out. It's a hot commodity in high demand!

Didn't ask what the tables and mismatched-but-somehow-coordinating chairs were for, (possibly workshops or tasting parties?) but they look super inviting and cosy. I can't stop thinking abt the stilton so i might go back for more soon.

However, there are many alternative malasada purveyors throughout Honolulu, so I depended on local vloggers to find the best ones. This one popped up often on YouTube, and as luck would have it, we were dining at The Pig & The Lady on the next block. How calorifically convenient. We took the opportunity to stop by for a pre-dinner snack since they closed at 6PM. It's a cute shop with multiple sweets including quite a selection of housemade ice cream and delectable mouthfuls called Cake Bombs (Photo 10). We decided we would be good and ordered one unfilled Malasada each. Dusted with various sugar flavors, they were just $2.65 a piece. I went for the Coffee, while Jamie chose the daily special, Cinnamon (Photo 6). They were soft and tasty, quite comparable to Leonard's albeit a tad smaller. That wasn't necessarily a bad thing since we had dinner ahead of us. However, we let temptation get the best of us and shared a $5.50 slice of the Ube Haupia Mac Nut Bar, a yummy combination of sweet potato and ube topped with haupia (coconut milk pudding) on a macadamia nut crust (Photo 9). Truth be told, it stole the show from the malasadas. There was one employee working at the register and another in the back. The service was attentive and efficient although there was only one person on the floor. They carry a great assortment of mochi and manju, including some varieties that need to be refrigerated. In addition, they offer local favorites like li-hing gummy bears and assorted flavored sembei, giving you plenty of sweet and savory options to choose from. The employee at the register was incredibly friendly and knowledgeable, happily sharing information about the different mochi flavors and offerings. Most importantly, the mochi here is absolutely delicious. During this visit, we ordered a Girls' Day pack and tried the chocolate ganache Oreo flavor which was amazing. The mochi was perfectly soft and paired beautifully with the rich chocolate ganache filling. My friend loved it so much that she went back the very next day to order more! Close friends (if you come here enough times) and deals can be felt here on a daily basis. It's a very definitely small scale operation that takes up very little room and scores up many delightful fruits and fresh produce for your daily needs. It's not much of a theatrical production, as the larger farmer's markets in various spots around urban Honolulu and across Oahu, but there is some value associated here. It's your usual cadre of local residents that want to enjoy the fresh produce that comes with farmer's markets, but want to be within the reaches of Kaimuki town. The Kaimuki Open Market could be categorized as a small niche of people bartering and selling among themselves, but why do it in the public eye? Not sure about that, but I guess it's the way it is here and buying among friends and family is like that, along with passers by who are also looking for a great deal as well. The overall experience here was definitely pleasant, but weird at the same time. I'd come back here more, if the farmer's market either at Kapiolani Community College did not have the stuff I need. The Kaimuki Open Market is neatly tucked away in the side streets of Kaimuki town, located on 12th Avenue across the street from the First Hawaiian Bank - Kaimuki branch. They usually operate on Saturdays, Is use you where I see them. Not sure if the do this open market on the week days, but I will be surprised if they do. If they do, it will probably during normal working hours. Usually cash will be king here, since I do not believe they take credit cards at all. Luckily there is a major bank next door or across the street, namely First Hawaiian Bank and Bank of Hawaii. Parking can be plenty for all, if you use the municipal parking lot but you would have to pay money. There's always street parking nearby but there will be some walking involved to get here. Of course, there is no admission fee, so that's always a good thing. Sometimes I will see someone new in the neighborhood buying stuff from here and it's always gratifying to see familiar faces periodically on the weekends. While you won't find vendors that will cook up a tasting meal, you just find a small assortment of produce that is fresh and compatible with whatever you are cooking / preparing for the day or week. Take this opportunity to venture out in your comfort zone and come here, as the alternative to supermarkets, Costco, and other nearby localized farmer's markets in and around town. Since I do live nearby, I thought it would be a nice gesture to check things out here on a recent Saturday and hit up the Kapiolani Community College mega farmer's market later on. For me, it was the perfect opportunity to get what produce I needed for work and home, while being quite close to home really. I can shop here on the weekends and know that I can get the best price and deal for my hard-earned dollar, as well as seeking other deals for friends and family by shopping here. While Whole Foods and various supermarkets are are very much in the Vinicity, shopping here at the Kaimuki open market can be adventurous and be out of your comfort zone. It's always nice to look at first. You'd probably would find something you're looking for, but for a better deal. Support local! B+ *1400th review and 100th first to review on Yelp! Yeh!! :)

There are 2 big parking lots (one is metered and one is gated) I would go to the gated one because it's free for less than 10 or 15mins but metered you need to put something in it. The crunch of the cake really gives it the extra texture that it needs in addition to the denseness of the cake itself. The cake base reminded me a bit of a light pound cake - pretty good. It also did not feel too heavy like other cakes that would give me a headache from being too rich - this one was just right. The center feature a lemon meringue type filling which reminded me of the same filling you'd find in a lemon bar. Overall the flavors melded together perfectly and I'd buy this again when I feel like a cheat day omg. The blueberry scone is also extremely famous here and I was able to nab the last few when it was nearing closing time. Their blueberry scone is huge keep that in mind LOL. Also I found it to be a bit doughy and soft. I feel like if this is your type of scone then by all means go for it, but for me personally not really my cup of tea. I still think it was delicious though! Maybe I came on an off day. I also tend to like my scone to have a bit of crumble and not too soft so that may also explain why I wasn't a huge fan of it. I'll still eat it though. LOL

Tucked away right behind Mud Hen Water in Kaimuki, their entrance is small and kind of easy to miss. There are a few parking spots in front & a small door leading to some amazing fish. I believe you can walk in and buy fish/seafood by the pound, but I actually have a subscription where I pay X amount per month & get a "fair share" of fish per every 2 weeks. You can play around with the portion sizes and frequency too. I think currently I receive 1-1.5 lb of fish per share of whatever the catch of the week is. I absolutely love the fish I receive from Ashley. You know it's fresh, it's sustainable and proceeds go directly to local fisherman. Over the past few months, I have received so many different types of fish. Some common fish I see are sashimi grade mahi mahi, ono, and ahi. Sometimes the fishermen will bring in invasive species & I always try to grab those. I've picked up whole kanpachi and whole opakapaka. It's always a fun challenge to try and clean & break down a whole fish lol. I think the craziest thing I picked up from Ashley was mahimahi head & bones. It was actually offered for free, I ended up making mahi dashi and then picked off of the meat for lunch. On Saturday I picked up some sashimi grade striped marlin & a whole octopus. I made a marlin carpaccio and grilled octopus for dinner :) I just love how Ashley and the team make it easy for us to be more connected with our local food source. Although it's a tad more expensive than buying fish at a convenience store, it is nice to know that all the fish is coming from our local fishermen from our shores.
